    Maybe next time you can try making the portal effects light up.
    Drill holes on the platform where the portal connects to the base. Fill the holes with resin and glue the portal over the holes. Then bring the lights underneath holes and point them up the holes. Hopefully the light is strong enough to go up and eliminate the effects. The best way would be to print the base and portal together in clear resin then paint it. Be sure to leave the bottom unpainted.

    Clear resin is great, it's my standard resin now because of things like this.
    But you are making it harder for yourself than it needs to be. Instead of adding the alcohol ink to the vat, you can simply paint the finished prints with it. Use some acetone (gotta be somewhat quick though, doesn't work well once the ink is dry) to smooth it out and create transitions, even between different colors etc.
    There is no noticeable difference in the end result, it tints the surface quite strongly if undiluted and looks as if it was this color all the way through. A glossy clear coat helps tons to sell the effect btw.

    A shortcut you can take to achieve a similar effect is to print the model entirely in clear resin, then after curing paint it with alcohol inks - they don't require primer since they etch the surface resin enough to lay down their pigment. This works well for creating translucent ghosts, elementals, and spell effects. Very large objects may require a tint to the resin at print time, similar to the method Luke used.

    • @rogthepirate4593
      @rogthepirate4593 2 года назад +1

      Can confirm. Been using this technique for over a year now.
      As to larger prints: you won't need to tint it at print time, the acohol inks are quite strong. I have a fairly large water elemental I did with this technique, it looks like it was entirely printed from colored resin with just a surface coat.

    Try less main lighting and add small low watt spot type leds under a couple of points, particularly in front of the main figure and under the gateway, a slightly greener colour to make them the focus. I think it will create some really nice light depth to a great diorama

    Cool experiment luke. Next time you could put the clear resin in the vat and add the pigment as the print progresses rather than emptying the vat to change the colour. Hope that makes sense might make changing colours/getting a gradient easier?!

    • @PalmAir
      @PalmAir 2 года назад

      @@GeekGamingScenics ah yea good point I suppose it depends on which way you want the gradient to travel.

  • @Born_Stellar
    @Born_Stellar 2 года назад

    I've also had issues with any UV light to get printer resins to cure without that crazy amount of warpage. I think its because it cures so fast it gets really hot. like really, a teaspoon amount of resin curing will heat up enough to burn you. and even small amounts of it warp on their own. UV resins for water effects cure much more slowly and stay smooth.
    and you can mix acrylic inks into resin and it will cure fine as well. I've not tried it in a printer but I've used printer resin for casting.

  • @CodeAugur
    @CodeAugur 2 года назад

    It would be interesting to just start with a small amount of coloured resin, then keep adding more clear over time, which should dilute it more and more, or in reverse, add a little ink at a time, which should build up to a more opaque top.

    in my experience clear resins cure faster than opaque. it can also cure in between tight supports or areas because it is clear, its also clear to the UV light. I was using it a lot because its cheaper but now I mix some grey in to prevent the print errors. its not a problem on bigger models that don't have crazy overhangs though.

  • @Craftlngo
    @Craftlngo 2 года назад

    if you constantly add clear resin while printing, you should get an even more impressive transition.
    Nonetheless is the result really amazing. Like a Sorceress summoning spirits from the glowing goo!

    • @huyked
      @huyked Год назад

      I can understand why you say this, but wouldn't there be a problem with how well it is mixed in? Some parts/areas may be more pigmented than others. If the liquid was more like water, the mixing in would be easy, but resin with its viscosity would make it tough. Of course, this just mean experimentation is needed, though PRUSA printers have a mechanism that would help with mixing.

    Cool idea which turned out great!
    I first thought you were going to add more ink to the resin as you printed (going from clear to opaque). But dark bottom => light top sure looks better, even if it's a bit more work with swapping the resing midway. (One could always turn the models upside down when printing^^, I guess)
    You mentioned the LEDs were a bit bright. Have you ever tried using Optic Fiber Lights/Cables? It's a bit more expensive solution, but it's not nearly as bright as normal leds.
    Been meaning to ask. Seen you use hot water when you remove the supports. You do that before or after curing the models?
