James Gunn seemed like he had a lot of potential. Shame he never went on to make something bigger.
Well he did direct some unknown, indie sci-fi movie called “Guardians of the Galaxy,” but that’s it
Didn’t he make this independent film called Scooby Doo?
Comics isn't sci-fi tho.
Y. T. It’s an action sci-fi movie, comics isn’t a genre
@@dye_anna it is. Superhero comics is a genre with specific conventions, same as say, romance literature.
Oh my god...James Gunn, the same guy who did GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, did the fucking live action Scooby Doo movie?
What the fuck?
+Maria Thompson
if it makes you feel any better most of his ideas for the Scooby Doo movie wasnt actually used.
.
If it was it might have actually been good, who knows.
Yeah I can't believe he never mentions the movie that came out several years after his review, what an idiot
+mrsubject1 I think the original posters more shocked at how he's improved.
+Maria Thompson And the same director who did A Christmas Story later went on to do "Superbabies: Baby Geniuses 2"
Life is weird.
+CamTroid that makes sense actually. Think about it, a Christmas Story didn't have amazing direction, just a great story and acting.
There is an achievement in this game called "I swear i did it on accident!" Which you get by looking up Julliet's skirt.
@General I think he is dead now, commenters have a lifespan of 3 months.
Ghorda9 you're dead too?
I personally think it’s more around a year
Corey M hey man you are dead too
@@grzegorzbrzeczyszczykiewic563 now he is
I was at the casino a month or so ago with my mother, and one of the casino machines they had featured a scantily-clad blond cheerleader (with the same color scheme as the uniform the girl wears in this game) in pigtails fighting zombies with a chainsaw.
My mother didn't understand why I was laughing so hard.
I got this game for Christmas and was somewhat bemused by the use of Cherry Bomb for the main menu. Then I watched Guardians if the Galaxy again having also gotten that for Christmas and noticed Cherry Bomb was in that too. Then it occurred to me they both involve James Gunn. I'm suddenly interested to see if I can find other repeating motifs throughout his work.
Never played the game, but I did watch some of it. Juliet wasn't soft and sympathetic (like the writers tried to FORCE on us with the Tomb Raider game), but she also wasn't some goal-focused badass. Juliet was... just fricking weird and embraced it--she rolled with it.
And therefore, so did I.
+Montesama314 You could learn something from her, or me, and that would be: EMBRACE THE WEIRDNESS!!! WHO ELSE LOVES BISEXUAL YIFF!!! JUST EMBRACE IT wait...nobody's responding, and you're all giving me the "WTF is wrong with you" look...*hides head under hands like a bomb is about to fall in a WW3 PSA*
Salvatration Halex How, exactly? What do you think that word means? I'm bisexual, so it's not the actual definition.
+Sir Fur stop trying to do Yahtzees bit.......it's his and you're not good at it.......and he is.......getcha own.....
josh tagge What "bit"?
+Salvatration Halex someones touchy did you have a bad day at school. Were the other kindergarteners bein meanto you?
The Irony is that the cold vacuum of space IS complex and busy according to quantum physics
Not really. It still has stuff going on in the background that we can't initially see, but keep in mind that anywhere that's not pretty much entirely a vacuum has exactly the same stuff going on while also being a hell of a lot less busy and complex than an area that contains matter and gravity and the like.
Just like the characters still a human being and of course there's a crap ton of complexity going on in each human psyche, but some characters are written with a whole lot believable depth or interesting personalities going on.
There's always stuff going on in even the most boring of places or things. It's still significantly less than everywhere else.
Never trust any sentence that contains the phrase "according to quantum physics".
very quarky
And two years after this video, James Gunn came again and wrote Guardians of the Galaxy.
PRECISION NERD STRIKE
James Gunn already made good movies before this
James Gunn later went on to write and direct the recent Guardians of the Galaxy movie.
Just saying.
Dang it you're right, Shame on Yahtzee for not realizing that 2 years ago.....
That's more of a fun fact for people watching the video today.
***** you're*
Randy butternubs Changed already lol Dyslexia get's the better of me sometimes(over focus on making sure letters aren't flipped leads to missing other things).
But hey long as you're not ripping up my papers in front of me like my teachers in elementary school and just being a grammar Nazi could be worse lol.
(I mean heck got my college degrees in spite of poorly informed people like that who feel belittling the disabilities of others makes them superior.)
Also hate to break it too you but there's a edit button lol.
***** Uh, hey dude, you did it again. You're*
3:23 I don't think I've ever heard Yahtzee almost laugh during a joke
Rainbow colored chainsaw, huh?
Why isn't it called a Rainsaw?
TRIPLE COMBO
Because it should be called Bowsaw or Chainbow
Brainsaw
JAAAKE!!
Then: who's James Gunn?
Now: Who doesn't know James Gunn
Dunno who that is but I know of Ben Gunn.
@Warwolf Wolf He's the guy who helped make Lollipop Chainsaw, keep up.
Or a chrainsbaow.
Godzilla had a stroke trying to read this and fucking died
5:46 After having watched the newest season of Stranger Things, that last line is surprisingly prophetic.
And now GOTG has turned James Gunn into a pretty big deal. Hindsight can be hilarious
Watching in 2021 when by this point everyone and their mom knows who James Gunn is is really fuckin funny
Isn’t he that pervert?
My mum doesn't lol.
So this game is basically Buffy but with zombies and the protagonist is actually a cheerleader
IIRC Buffy was actually a cheerleader as well, in the canon movie that preceded the TV series.
@@lnsflare1And she was a cheerleader for one episode of the TV series too.
That James Gunn joked ages about as well as James Gunn's Twitter.
"Seriously, that's pretty fucked"
Always will be my favorite "Zero Punctuation", if only because it's both serious, yet still funny in delivery.
"Wanna try and beat that record and make a game with a two-word summary, Suda? I've got one for you: DEAD HORSE."
Well this was prophetic. I've got to assume Suda accepted this challenge and that's where Killer is Dead came from.
There would be some profit in zombie hunting, robbing them after your done chopping them up. Even a zombies got to have some money on them.
True
Yeah, but where would you spend the money when civilisation has collapsed?
Also, take it from someone who works in the funeral industry and has spent far more time than I'd like to think about going through the pockets of people who have started to decompose and/or soil themselves (what do you think is going to happen to all that human flesh zombies eat). Its not worth the effort for the £2.72p you would find in their pockets.
Okay as a girl, I LOVE JULLIET!! She's so cute and fun to play as, and I honestly hate a lot of women in video games: the stupid 12 year married to the duke in dragon's dogma, bitchyass sarah in walking dead, the cocky chick you had to save in the theif reboot. Also had a hard time with Lara Croft in the new tomb raider (even though I loved her in some of the previous ones) as her sex noises while falling down a mountain and constant whining about how she will never be good enough or strong enough did get a little bland after a while (YOU CAN DO THIS LARA). Julliet Starling is the most fun and enjoyment I've had in a character in a long time, and she has great taste in outfits
Angela :3 that was actually cute, hot me up fam @yaboitushatoo is my IG
Lol, the internet never fails
Berry Benson but her parents did
dsa dsa I meant the person above me, but sick burn!
I know right? She was just so enjoyable, and oddly similar to me. Maybe that’s why I could relate and have so much fun with her. Women don’t have to be overpowered, extremely strong characters, just a person you can see existing or would like to hang out with. To me, that was Juliet.
And yes, her outfits were great. If they’d let me wear skirts like that on school grounds, honey I would!
To quote Angry Joe: "FUCK. ZOMBIE BASEBALL!"
The james gunn comment aged well
Did it? Gunn was a pretty low-level writer-director back then and now he's co-running DC. That's one hell of a promotion.
@@benwasserman8223 yes mate, because that comment aged well. It wasn't sarcasm.
James Gunn hey? Never heard of him.
*looks around* umm, I'm alone... *hides under blanket with lights on*
Imho the soundtrack was the best thing about this game, and he didn't even mention it 😭
I have a term test tomorrow, but I found this and I cant stop watching!
And now you're a slave. Your profile picture says it all... you went down the yahtzee19 rabbit hole
Did you pass the test?
I would get this game just to hear Tara Strong being crude and raunchy for once, what with all the other kid friendly characters she voices =)
um she did play a crude character remember cindy from the boondocks
Nerdy Brony Really? I never watched that show but thanks for the Information =)
Isaiah Soderlind np :) just glad to be of help
shw also voiced princess clara in drawn together i think
What's funny is that Bubbles and Juliet have a surprising bit in common.
the whole time I went through this I had to eat blow pops (get your mind out of the gutter they're the lollipops with the bubblegum in the middle) like it made me crave them, and it felt weird to not be eating them... I stopped playing after a while because I was eating too much sugar.... Anyway moving on...
***** I never did until I was talking to a friend about them and he took it dirty .... -.-'
Sure blowpops LOL
I thought for the longest time that "blowpop" was some kind of cocaine thing. But I grew up in a place where cocaine was referred to as blow by adults who didn't understand slang, so that has something to do with it.
***** Arkansas. Like I said, out of touch adults.
Watching this in honor of the remaster titled Lollipop Chainsaw: RePop coming out next year.
"QUIRKIIIIIIIEEEEEE!!!!!" LOL That part is great
Wow... sixty long ass comments about the same thing from a bunch if fifteen year olds who completely misunderstood what objectification means... And here i am just laughing at the tuna sandwich joke
i guess your easily amused (it was a pretty meh joke)
Insane in the brain yes, it was a joke mocking my own simplicity. Thank you.
Ryan Tyminski dude calm down i dint mean to be offensive i just said it was an alright joke and you were easily amused and then you lashed out. besides you were taking the piss out of all the people writing speeches about feminism and equality
wow someone's touchy as fuck also looks autisitic in his profile pick... anyway time to sit back and watch him take the bate.
nick shilton are you talking about me or him?
The funny thing is the light non chainsaw attack combos end up getting really good. Like the best one decapitates a room. And the (360) AA XX attack is perfect to kill zombies on the floor.
Wow, I remember when this game was in the news cycle. Not anymore!
Also James Gun made a good name for himself with guardians of the galaxy!
And The Suicide Squad too
Japanese games tend to get away with over sexualisation because they actually make the female characters quite strong. I mean look at Senran Kagura for example: everyone has two blobs of jelly on their chest, they show off their body and even get their clothes shred into pieces, and yet they can kick ass more than most male heroes.
Or maybe Japanese just don't give a crap, because they've realised that fiction is fiction.
Arexion5293 That and they're intelligent enough to not take modern feminists seriously. Scratch that... They're smart enough to not even have feminists complain about fiction.
Alex Well, fiction reflects the views of the time as well as reinforcing said views, so feminists like me will be very irritated if women are portrayed as weak or completely helpless in modern fiction. There's nothing wrong with it at all.
Battle Kitty!
It reflects the thoughts of its creator(s), which may reflect the views of the time. Even then it all depends on the work of fiction itself.
So you're saying that if you're going to give a female character large breasts and a big arse, you have to make her strong?
Jonny Roberts
Nah, I'm just pointing out that Japanese seem to do that quite often, which might be one of the reasons why no one complains. On the other hand there are also plenty of cases when those characters exist solely for fanservice and even then no one seems to care.
So maybe they've simply realised that fiction is fiction.
What I've noticed is that British people seem to complain about everything.
Yes I'm also British.
Pretty sure he's Australian.
T. K. Holmes British living in Australia, your ignorance has been added to the list of things to complain about, in case you had not realized I am also British :P
T. K. Holmes Does he sound Austrailian to you?
He Lives in Australia but was born in Britain.
T. K. Holmes He Lives in Australia but was born in Britain
"Super". . . That fucking explains EVERYTHING
He's writing Guardians of the Galaxy as well.
*PRECISION FUTURE NERD STRIKE*
I've already judged that as a terrible movie, not because it is I've never seen it but because it was dug deep out of the nostalgia bin and has been shoved down my throat every RUclips video more often then Call Of Duty's meat head just before it's released during a porno.
And since I know RUclips and Google are tracking my interests which I've never show for it that means they bought all the advertising space which is synonymous with "this product sucks."
So before you tell me he's redeemed himself, or it's actually a good movie you'll have to wait tell I wash the taste of spunk out of my mouth before you load it up again.
***** Are you kidding me? You think its a terrible movie but you haven't seen it yet? Just because you don't like the writer and it has had a lot of advertising? Fuck off, you can't judge a 2 hour+ movie without actually seeing any of it...
***** Lol somebody woke up on the zero sarcasm side of the bed this morning.
Though I must say the reality of your argument is incredibly stupid lol if I have to pay to see a movie I think I won't like, so I don't want to pay for it, are you volunteering to reimburse me if I don't like it?
And frankly the reality is the more anythings shoved in my face the less I want it that's just a fact lol.
I liked candy bars as a kid but when my mom put them with my breakfast, lunch box, dinner, and snack I didn't want them anymore(may have been her plan) I'm a big boy let me know it exists and if I want it I'll go get it, you save millions and millions only showing me one time.
***** But the thing is, it isn't the entirety of anything shoved in your face, its a small snippet. You say that getting a candy bar 30000 times ruins the taste, which it does, obviously but a trailer or any other form of advertising is not the entire thing. And that is besides the point, I am saying that you are calling it a terrible movie without having seen anything besides the trailer, which is just fucking stupid. You can't write a fucking review about something without having seen the damn thing. "I give this snickers a 6/10, haven't eaten it yet but the wrapper is kind of boring".
And what fucking sarcasm?
***** Also, "lol, lol, lololol, lol, lol, lolol, lol". Fucking hell dude, do you have some sort of relationship with the damn word?
Most of these comments are about Feminism and other related things, can I just bring up something else? Like the fact that the Woman that does the main character's voice is/was a voice actor in many children's shows like Fairly Odd Parents(Timmy Turner), My Little Pony(Twilight Sparkle), and The Powerpuff Girls(Bubbles).
+MyScorpion42 "Killing zombies gives me total wood"

+Jess Ferrian What?? Oh no. No! Nooo! Why her? Why did it have to be e... NOOOOO!!!!! D^X
+retrogamelover2012 What, this games MC is bubbles? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Wissenschaft Not really why I reacted to it, but OK.
I loved your little analogy at the end there.
I shall now be referring to James Gunn as “writer of critically acclaimed video game: ‘Lollipop Chainsaw’ James Gunn.”
"Super" actually wasn't too bad (barring a certain cringe-worthy scene), and "Guardians of the Galaxy" was really funny. Maybe James Gunn is getting better as he goes along?
He also made Slither, which was a funny little parody of small town alien invasion movies with Nathan Fillion.
Montesama314 GotG was sorta meh for me
Are you talking about when Boltie rapes the Crimson Bolt?
Kanaya: *heavy breathing*
Wrong mythological monster, Grimm!
I see no clowns in this video, I see no reason Kanaya would be interested. After all, she deemed the undead around her hive to be "far too dangerous" to fight herself.
ALPHYS who? Never heard of them.
Black Fire Dragon the 13th Ever heard of Homestuck?
The Renegade Of Naught doesn't ring a bell.
I have similar feelings about Kill la Kill.
So... It's a more sexualized Buffy the Vampire Slayer with the vampires replaced with zombies then? And wooden stakes with a rainbow chainsaw?
UlithiumDragon I'd say that's a good way to sum it up, yeah.
It would be much harder to make that same jab at James Gunn nowadays, what with him having made Guardians of the Galaxy and all.
Forget Guardians. Gunn now co-runs DC’s filmography, so it’s basically like dissing Kevin Feige.
His review's are so great, I loved this game!!
Of dammit you come to North Carolina 26 min away from where I live but I don't see the video till 2 years later
These old reviews are amazing.
when i was shown lollipop chainsaw for the first time i did know vaguely that tara strong was involved in juliets voice, but needless to say as my friends rolled the intro and i heard juliet talk in THAT voice.... im not sure what hhit the floor first, my jaw or my ass and i will NEVER be able to unsee that thank you very much @Kippadrake!!
James gunn before guardians of the galaxy
Don't forget you have Tara Strong voice acting Juliet.
Isn't she the one who voiced the purple one on the show that shall not be named?
Flak C Sherbert Yes........... Raven from Teen Titans...........
Oh, I was gonna guess Twilight Sparkle.
Phrienchiey That's what I meant.
Makes sense that she voiced the character in this game. She made a good Harley Quinn in the Arkham game she was in.
James Gunn being involved with Chainsaw Lollipop makes SO MUCH SENSE now!
I remember this was one of the first ZP videos I watched, and back then I was having trouble following what he was saying. Watching this years later, and having watched dozens of his other videos, in this one he sounds slower than usual... lol
Precision nerd strike!!!!!!!
Now James Gunn has a real movie under his belt!
Truly, friendship IS magic.
As long as you are a cartoon horse, that is.
02:08 What is that game down to the left there? I cant make out the title!
What I love about Lollipop Chainsaw is that it's voiced by the same voice actor as Twilight Sparkle from MLP. So it's fun to put audio from Lollipop Chainsaw onto videos from MLP.
The God-Emperor of Mankind She was also Raven from Teen Titans AND Timmy Turner from the Fairy Odd Parents
Several years old comments: James Gun is the director!
Now: He’s not anymore cause of Disney being hypocritical.
And he is again. Yay!!!
Raphaël Hemery oh cool
i cant believe that he used a lost soul sprite from doom for one of his gags, good way to hit me in the nostalgia yahtzee!
it's still on the bucket list
God, that whole James Gunn controversy makes the whole "who's James Gunn" thing kinda weird
This man has a talent for butchering anything he sees in 400 mile radius. God damn...
That whole ending summed up the game perfectly
James Gunn not being widely known has not aged well.
Is it me or is this whole overusage of zombies in gaming just an excuse to get away with poor AI?
I can't remember the last game I played that genuinely objectified women that most people don't hate. Dragon's Crown, to a small extent. Possibly DmC Devil May Cry. Even as far as tropes go, it's far, far more common to see scantily clad women as badass action girls than completely helpless.
Tabula Rasa Gaming (TRG Plays) this isnt objectification actually.
Dmc's kat wasnt objectified. At one point in the game she had to he saved because she was shot and kidnapped but just so happens to be female as well. She couldve been a dude in the same situation and the same events wouldve transpired.
AfricanSpaceJesus
I agree... She wasn't, she saves Dante and Dante saves her. If woman always needs to be on top of sittuation and never do mistakes or never need help is the only way writing female characters, why not just have male characters. Because you can do ANYTHING with male characters and nobody really cares.
That way we don't have to take the fine comb at every minor or major female character and whine about every small itty-bitty detail where they might mommentarily feel "weak" or unlikable.
:p
SuperArppis You're exactly right.
It’s because they did it without being rude. Objectify women all you want as long as your not disrespecting an entire gender. Same for men. They treated Juliet as a person who just happened to be really hot.
yahtzee is a legend. how could anyone dislike him.
Ik ^^
She's a great voice actress and person.
remember when no one knew who James Gunn was
Disney forgot who he was this week.
i think ive jinxed his fate, this comment was a few days before that happened
Why is it whenever he mentions suda51 he forgets the best game ever. deadly premonition
It's like The Room! So bad it's good!
MrAlphaWolves you mean so good its good. dont you zach
Bloodnexus Zach? And no i don't
Oh crap I just realized what you mean!
The reason for that is because Suda51 didn't develop Deadly Premonition. SWERY65 did.
This review was a lot nicer than I thought it would be.
The reason the cheesey whats-it leaves you unsatisfied is that its very flavourful but has the mass of air which simulates smelling good food.
She's a really good voice actor. Top notch, in fact. I could probably do some research and find a ton of good games she's in.
Ok, kids, i will explain. YOU think objectification means showing women looking sexy and scantily clad, but that's not what it means. It means that women are viewed as objects, which often is the case in video games. Most games treat women as a goal or something that has to be saved because they can't fend for themselves, hence women not being so happy about it.
How many invisible kids asked you to explain anything? Were they perhaps made from straw?
OfficialJab I was being facetious. I apologize if it went over your head for some reason
Ryan Tyminski Probably because it's making a complete earnest point? What's the difference if it doesn't include any hyperbole or some other kind of wink?
A women being unable to fend doesn't make her an object, in the same way an 85 year being unable to defend themselves doesn't make them an object.
So when men get reduced to nothing but a target at the range you're okay with that? Of course not, your too busy white knighting the entire female gender.
Derpy's telling someone to stop starting shitstorms?
I lol'd.
Fun Fact: The writer for this game, James Gunn, directed movies like Slither, Super, & Guardians of the Galaxy.
And he made guardians of the galaxy now
I'm glad you're one of the people who didn't bitch about how this game was sexist or as some dared say, mysoginistic towards women(not that you really care anyway). Julliet was just her own character. She was not meant to properly represent all girls. I would also like to add that she has 2 other sisters who are markedly different from her yet still are ass kicking zombie hunters. If all the girl characters looked and acted in the same ditsy way, then I could sort of see the point. However, that was not the case at all. People really just do want to bitch about anything.
true dat! I hear the Oregon section of the Pacific crest trail is called "the Green tunnel".
Throwing a whole new set of rules at me like a fridge on a railroad track? I don't even... what?
Here after the "James Gunn made Guardians of the Galaxy" comments but before the "Everyone hates James Gunn now because he made some edgy jokes years ago" comments.
Here after he made the GOTG movies, after everyone hated him for his old tweets and also after everyone got over it and he made more movies lol
is it me or is thisone slower than usual
He was sick for this one if I'm not mistaken. Go watch the Alice Madness Returns video, all the editing tricks he uses can't make him sound fast when it hurts to speak.
The way you described Juliet reminds me of Nui Harime from Kill la Kill.
-Raises up arms, palms facing forward- QUUUIIIIIRRKKKYYYYYY!!
Ehh I tended to avoid this game cause I couldn't get over Tara Strong's "Twilight Voice" being put with "The biggest Slut in Highschool" body it just caused those voices in my head to rampage unchecked about anime and other shit and I fear I'd wake up in the middle of an anime con where everyone's dead and I'm vomiting up chunks of human flesh.
Danny Caracciolo yea
How long till we get an mlp zombie game?
boy did that james gunn joke age poorly
Oh yeah this came out before Guardians of the Galaxy
They both have their advantages. I always love dominating helpless ground units with the Scrin's overwhelming airpower.
Hm, makes me wonder what game characters would look like if women were in the majority responsible for game development and women had been the target audience for two decades? Would they use male stereotyped characters? *scratching head*
And would the best armors would make the male characters look more like shirtless hunks like Jacob from Twilight?
SCaitan
well, on the more *extreme* side of things...
Male stereotypes: Think of the 'dudes' from the Twilight saga, or any overly worshiped douche bag boyband artist.
majority of the female roles may actually resemble Bella from Twilight
there's your answer. you may proceed to cower in a corner and cry yourself to sleep
***** I'd certainly hope a majority would think that way. But the thing still has a pretty massive following
+SCaitan Pretty sure male-developed games use male stereotypes already.
I'm tired of this whole "womanz r porrly done in vidya gamze" argument mainly because _everyone_ is poorly done in most video games. The men are all uncaring, ultra stud muffins and the women are all emotional, super sexy tarts. And, (and yes, you can use "and" to start a sentence despite what your elementary school teachers told you) just for the record, there is a big difference between a sexy character and an objectified character, a distinction many seem incapable of making. Just because Sexy Ms Sassypants is wearing a skimpy costume and flaunting her sexuality _does not_ make her a sexually objectified character. She only becomes objectified when her sex appeal is her one and only character trait.
Regarding the issue of both genders being poorly represented, that's true, but it's not a problem in the same way for men. The uncaring ultra-stud muffins are conceived for the purposes of self-projection by the target audience, which is still largely assumed to be male, and as such the female characters are often conceived to compliment the power fantasies that the male characters lead by further pandering to the egos of the audience. I do agree with you that sexualisation is not, strictly speaking, synonymous with objectification (some of my favourite female character in fiction are heavily sexualised), but I also think it warrants pointing out that the excessive number of sexualised female characters found in nearly all forms of popular culture is indicative of a broader social trend that fails to represent women who are not typically attractive.
I also think, and please don't be offended, that simply dismissing the argument (as you seem to be trying to do) because of how prevalent the cases supporting the argument are is not a good idea. The issue needs to be laid out and considered fairly by consumers, not dismissed simply because a considerable number of the arguments being made don't stand up fully to scrutiny. Please think about this.
smileyboyrocks The games industry has done what every other industry does. Appeal primarily to its main audience, with only exceptions going the other way. It's the same with cars, toys, clothes. A male model in underwear advertising a car would be seen as 'provocative', instead of being directed at a female audience. Maybe because there is still an subconscious undercurrent in both genders to see "a woman who watches sexy men (without the ultimate intention of marrying them)" as a slut, while is it perceived as completely normal for men to watch sexy women, and no one would immediately assume he wants to marry her. It is changing, I dare say, but it is slow change. And (starting sentences with 'And' is cool!) it will most likely not be the end of sexualized women, but rather the beginning of showing men the same way. Because, 'sex sells', which ironically goes for both genders (even though feminists seem to insist otherwise), and so the advertising industry will just do what they do best. Feed the masses with stereotypes.
I do not have a huge issue with it, mind you, mainly because I believe it is somewhat a biological part of our brains, like it is for dogs or birds. But being raised in a civilization of commercials that show girls in bikinis to get me to buy an alarm clock has somewhat immunized me to this shallow attempt. Genes still make me look at them, but I do not run for the next store, and the same goes for games. Now I just believe they try to hide the fact that is has nothing else to offer. If they start doing it with men, it'll just be the same thing for a different audience.
smileyboyrocks
So what you just said is "men as typically attractive men is fine because 'power fantasy' but women being typically attractive in video games is not."
Okay, sure, that's some Grade-A Feminist logic you got going there.
And really, hand-waving away the objectification of men in video games because "Oh every guy wants to be that" is just as retarded as saying "Every girl wants to be big-breasted". Not every guy is jerking off while beating their chests and howling at the thought of being Marcus Fenix.
Every industry always likes to portray characters as attractive people. Why video games get shit on while everyone else gets away with it is beyond me.
You misunderstood me.
Firstly, I did make a point of saying that "it's not a problem in the same way," not that "it's not a problem." Those characters are undeniably written to pander to what is presumed to be a predominantly male audience, and yes, it is still sexualisation, but it's not objectification because the term objectification refers not simply to sexualisation but also to the roles that characters are assigned within the narrative (with objectified characters being characters who are reduced to roles equivalent to inanimate objects, such as rewards or possessions to be collected). Men in games (and yes, many other branches of culture) are rarely disempowered in the same way and are often framed as either self-projection models or role models. I do agree that it is a problem; it does reinforce negative stereotypes, but not in the same way.
Secondly, I also made a point of emphasising the fact that I don't have an issue with sexualisation. You can pander to sexuality and not objectify. Case in point: the French arthouse film "Blue is the Warmest Colour." It's damned close to pornographic, but no objectification goes on, and I'd argue that that makes it fine. In gaming, you could easily (and quite rightly) reason that a character like Lara Croft is not an objectified character because she is empowered and has a personality. The same goes vice versa: you can objectify without sexualisation.
Thirdly, I do wholly agree with you that not every guy wants to be Marcus Fenix, which makes it all the more perplexing that various industry professionals seem to think that we do. Hell, I am a guy and I have no interest in being the pinnacle of masculinity. The fact that it's not a universally accurate assumption that the industry pros are making doesn't change the fact that it is the assumption that they're making, and that a portion of the audience doesn't see it as a problem.
Fourthly, I also made a point of referring to popular culture in general, not just gaming. Schools of thought analysing gender representations exist in every facet of popular culture, so stating that gaming is being victimised while other mediums go untouched is, frankly speaking, wrong. Feminist perspectives on film, for example, have existed for decades, and the arguments are still evolving and being put across. It's just that gaming can still be said to be in its infancy as an art form and is becoming a more integral part of mainstream culture, therefore it's coming under scrutiny more and more. Gaming is not being specifically targeted, but the discussion of it from an intellectual perspective is becoming more widespread and therefore it might feel like it's being targeted.
smileyboyrocks For many women, being sexually attractive IS the power fantasy. I see things like "Location: In ya man's bed" or labels like "hot" "sexy" or even "pornstar" as things women choose for themselves. Just because video games tend to be created by men for men, doesn't mean women are above the behavior.
I bet that if there wasn't already a ripped, smart, mysterious, detective in spandex with a utility belt for anything, women would create it. Heck, I pull out an unconventional swiss army knife and women gawk at it.
Indeed! She also voiced Juliet Starling in the English version of Lollipop Chainsaw. She is a VAILF!
And I watch, and I watch, from my balcony of bliss, watch it burn, and burn and continue burning simply for me.
The problem isn't female characters being pretty. It's about female characters being pretty THINGS. If they serve no other purpose than to just sit there looking pretty with no important tasks to accomplish or opinions/insights to give, then they are not a person, they are a decoration. And that's when it's bad.
So do you have a problem with the billions upon billions of walking targets known as men in first person shooters?
bestpsychosean hasnolastname I don't play FPS games, so my opinion is probably not very relevant. But if they are in a war setting and women aren't allowed on the front lines, then you're not going to have a lot to shoot at if you don't shoot men. But I understand the dislike of the "men are more disposable" thing.
***** But its been passed into law for years that women can join the infantry. Personally, I still haven't seen a woman actually join any infantry unit. But since we're talking fantasy there should 50/50 at least.
Or it's because the girl isn't the playable character.
So we should raise a fuss over all the men this happens to in games? Not every character can be the main character it doesn't just happen to women the only reason people care is because it's "apparently rampant" in games and if you care so much don't buy games that have non female protagonists or make your own game
Can someone explain to me why it's okay to have hot male heroes but sexist to have hot female heroes?
Euclid It's called "misandry". It's an actual thing, and it's perpetuated by misandrists that hide, like the ravenous wolves they are, behind the sheep's wool known as the label "feminist". As such, I would rather shear myself than be mistaken for such beings.
+Euclid Because the feminist concept of equality is a complete farce.
+GaolisVideoLog Subjective reporting eh...
***** I already understand and wish there was more realistically armoured heroines(immersion is king for me when it comes to my gaming) out there. Also I agree with the points raised barring, maybe, that all female gamers do not want what has traditionally been male dominated franchise x to change. I always hesitate to make sweeping statements seeing as how diverse Humanity is;)
But yeah, I mentioned subjective reporting in support of your 1st comment. All to often we find that which we want to find and as such, only report that which backs up the subjective opinion which only serves to obscure any real logical discourse.
+Euclid Because (most) women feel inferior to these make-believe characters. Men know the difference between fantasy and reality and, as a result, don't start writing hate-mail to game developers about how Kazuya and Johnny Cage are too ripped and that they should be wearing more clothing while fighting to the death.
Lol I litterlly just finished eating some of the "dusty" cheese things while watching this! XD
Especially after how cool it was to get a different intro/outro song every time before.
