Building Your Dream Ferrari Is A Beautiful Thing - Petrolicious

  • “I wanted to experience what they experienced, and I didn’t know any other way to do it except by trying to build a car like they had,” says Peter Giacobbi, builder and owner of this incredible 1959 Ferrari 250 TR recreation.
That’s right: recreation. A master fabricator, engineer, and builder, Giacobbi made this car in order to understand what his boyhood heroes like Juan Manuel Fangio and Graham Hill experienced when driving cars like the Ferrari 250 TR.
His favorite design on any car ever, the project swung into high gear after finding a handmade aluminum body for a ’59 TR that had been sitting for decades. From there, Giacobbi began to figure out what he needed in order to complete the car.
“I made everything look as close as possible…I copied the chassis, found the correct tail lights, had the instruments made…” “There are some things that are different from the original. It was impossible to find a good 3 litre motor, so I used a 4.4 and modified the aesthetics to look like the 250…” he says.
He says that the car is very exciting, especially considering that it weighs 2,300 lbs and has 400 horsepower. “These cars are very hard to drive…It’s pure seat of the pants,” Giacobbi says.
“I drive it as much as I can, I drive it down to the local coffee shop usually once or twice a week,” he says. But on any road-headed to any destination-his respect for racing greats is apparent, saying, “They’re not only heroes, they’re supermen to have driven at the high speeds for the distances they did is an absolute miracle.”

Purists can thumb their snobby noses all day, but the reality is this is a drivable piece of recreated history, like the flying B-17 Memphis Belle I witnessed thundering off the runaway in Duxford England, seeing a working "fake" in action is worth more to most of us than a real McCoy collecting dust in a static museum or some rich prick's 20 car garage. It builds a connection you don't ever forget, puts you closer to those of who got to experience it when it was new. Isn't that what appreciating history is also about?

    • @writerconsidered

The money is only one restriction. The real restriction is there is only 5 in the world, that means only 5 people can own one at a time. At some point building a replica becomes a requirement to enjoying your passion. All the money in the world can't buy one if no one wants to sell one. On the rare occasion when one goes up for auction you can bet thousands of millionaires and billionaires bid on one and only one person walks away with the prize. The rest walk away with nothing. again at some point a replica becomes a requirement.

Bruce Boschek = Great comment Bruce and I completely agree with you. :-) Sometimes I wish I was mechanically minded because imagine feeling the stress, joy, tears and pride in building this car. Imagine all the stories he has with regards to the build and the skills he can pass on to a new generation. Peter is an absolute legend and as you say, a genius. He's built his own car and can enjoy it. Cars like this should be driven instead of being stuck in a vast Billionaire's car collection where it'll rarely see the light of day. Where's the fun in that?! Even if I was a Billionaire, I'd still drive an original in anger because you only live once and you can't take these cars with you!
As a recreation, this car will still be a huge amount of money (circa $750,000-$1m) but imagine having this or a 1970's Daytona and there's just simply no competition!

I was once a wrench, and thus now hate wrenching on cars, and prefer working on houses.
However the video is well done, right down to the music.
And while I kinda hate cars, I still wrench, having built a proper dual battery wiring harness for the VW Westy, but had a trans builder add the manual locking diff. from a syncro vanagon.
Seriously the video is first class, and required serious production time....

I love this car, the way it looks, sounds, everything. I understand his passion about wanting to know the feel of that specific car and his comment; "It's not an easy car to drive" I have a vehicle similar in personality that only myself and one other person can drive and stay ahead of. It's well sorted out but still needs one's full attention. I also enjoyed learning about your Ferrari on Leno's' Garage and the video of driving it, and hearing it. I thought your complement to Jay about the 2nd to 3rd shift proves to me he is a superb driver. What a car, my favorite Ferrari along with the 4 cylinder 500 Series II Mondial. Congratulation's on a superbly difficult accurate build. How could it possibly be anything else than a Ferrari ?

My heart glowed when I saw this great video. Peter Giacobbi embodies everything that I aspire to in building cars. Humble, unpretentious, straight-talker, no BS. He is living his dream and making no excuses about it. He cuts through the crap of whether it is fake, a replica, a knock-off, etc.. He built and drives his dream car out of passion and not to impress anyone or as an investment. I would love to meet him someday- a genuine person, a car-lover and a delight to see the sparkle in his eyes when he talks about his passion.

One day a friend of mine told me, "I wish I could afford the STI, but right now all I can afford is the Impreza. Why can't you just let me enjoy what I like?" I cried later that day and met up with him and apologized. If it hadn't been for him, I would not be able to enjoy the passion people have, only the pile of metal with fancy name. Yeah, on skinny damned tires! You could scare the crap out of yourself and any "foolish" passenger you enticed into the car. I understand Peter's desire to keep the "original" proportions because that was what the 1959 Testa Rosa used, but he's running with maybe a hundred extra horsepower and a bunch more torque. I think I'd be buying tires by the truck load even if I was being a "good boy" and not leaving a couple of black stripes every time I got on the throttle!!
I was very fortunate in getting to drive several 20-30 years newer Ferraris in a shop I worked in, with much more modern power trains, including lots more rubber, and they could still get you into a whole bunch of trouble if you insisted on getting silly with them. I can just imaging what Peter's car must be like as he has it set up. Wow!!
