The Ferrari 250 GTO Speaks for Itself

- Опубликовано: 27 сен 2024
- Using hyperbole to describe the 1964 Ferrari 250 GTO is unnecessary. The car speaks for itself. It is one of the last (of thirty-six) Ferrari GTOs ever built. This particular one, chassis #5571, was the first of the Series II bodies. The 3.0L V-12 produces about 300 horsepower and it completed multiple endurance races, winning its class in the Daytona Continental 2000km (this car's first race), Sebring 12 hour, and Nassau TT.
The driver is Mr. Derek Hill, who won the Ferrari Challenge International Championship in 1995 and the Formula Dodge West Coast in 1996, and raced a Bugatti EB110 at Le Mans. Additionally, he has a special attachment to this car as it was his dad, Fomula One Champ Phil Hill, that raced it in Daytona and Nassau. But what is the car really like? Well, "It's so hard to describe just how incredible it is to drive this car at speed. I mean, it's really a certain kind of ecstasy." We wish we could give you a first-hand account but, just like you, we're relegated to dreaming. If you're still reading, thank you. But we know why you're here, go on now, watch the video.

This is how a motor should sound!
exactly love the sound it's music for my ears :)
*engine*
Euphoria.
You've never heard the V8 sound of a GT40? That sound in engine should sound. A motor is electric by the way.
@casual35 Also, motor in anything that moves sonething els e.g: The prime mover.
Does anybody else keep coming back to this video? I never get tired of this. It's the best you can do besides being there, I hope someday to see one of these cars in person.
I come back to listen to it. Can't get tired of that sound. They have a really good video on this channel about a 50s testarossa
SuperGoldnut - spot on! That said, I saw the Hillclimb video first and this one after, and I appreciate now more than ever the details and history behind the model as well as this particular example.
Yes indeed
I took the sound of the engine and created a ring tone for my phone.
You should see peoples faces when my phone rings.
yes
Most cars of this caliber are treated like caged tigers. Pampered, but not doing what they were made for. It makes me so happy to see one in its natural habitat.
David Attenborough talking here ladies and gentlemen.
But these cars are fragile.
@ArianOriginal21 i didnt know that. but these are the street versions, so they werent made for reliability.
@ArianOriginal21 i didn't know that. thanks for the info
About 20 of the 36 are used, not daily driven, but they’re raced, there are many videos of them racing at meet ups, and other instances
Fun fact: 1 ton of gold is worth 64 million dollars. Ferrari 250 GTO, weighing 950 kg, was recently sold for 70 million dollars. ...........That's right, this car is worth more than its weight in gold.
That's crazy
I have watched most of your videos twice over but I keep coming back to this. 4:15 to 5:35 is one of the greatest pieces of motoring video I have ever seen. I genuinely mean that!
The sound of that v12.... The sight out of that cockpit..... I've never wanted to be somewhere so bad as I want to be in that drivers seat.
+lushleeway if you think that was good...go check out Petrolicious' latest video of this car running through the hills. Uploaded a few hours ago. Best 7mins of your life...
+nuddekutsch Who wants radio with a V12 under the hood?
I was biking around and saw a fake 250 GTO with no lights
I completely agree. I guess that’s why they are $40 million! If I could afford it, I’d be paying it, and then I’d be driving it.
Reminds me of the onboard footage of Senna around Monaco. Simply sublime.
An owner truly worthy of this legend of a car. He´s got the unique connection to it through his farther, is not intimidated by it yet absolutely aware of its specialness and has apparently the skill set to absolutely gun it. That is a very rare thing. To see this makes me very happy somehow.
Indeed and, for once, the owner is a a very sympathetic fellow. More often than not, they're complete narcissistic douche bags parading their wealth. Which usually makes the videos utterly unenjoyable to me, no matter how special their vehicle is, so I stop watching.
Imagine the confidence you need to blow this car through those corners
@Skoobidabop - Yes, confidence bred by honing skills! Derek Hill is an experienced racer and has competed in several different classes both in the U.S. and Europe.
@@h3x6g0n6 I totally agree.
@@Skoobidabop it gave me chills to see this car driven in such a way. so beautiful
That thing sounds like heaven
Italian foreplay at its best! :)
Absolute HELL on 4 wheels.....
It sure does

Ah shit here we go again. Michael the fuckface is harassing foreign car lovers again.
That's one of the best sounding cars I've ever heard. What a beautiful machine.
The Ferrari 250 GTO is essentially a Work of Art on Four Wheels.
And the artist was Giotto Bizzarrini! RIP🙏
Wauw! Amazing that you guys had the opportunity to make a video about a Ferrari 250 GTO! I LOVE THAT SOUND!
It gave me an erection! lol
WikdSeafood You need to see a doctor
Alfred Munkenbeck Only if he drives for more than four hours.
"So hard to describe?" I'm up for the challenge. >:D
Ur description would be awesome
do it!!!
I can just hear it in that angry voice now.
I look forward to RCR: Ferrari 250GTO.
The rules prevent you from describing it, its not regular
holy fuck i wouldnt be able to drive it like that, id be scared as fuck to wreck it
Xavier Brenneman My dream is to drive it just like that.. I dont know if you drive but if you do you shouldnt be scared. It most be amazing driving this :/
Xavier Brenneman They were designed to be driven like that. Anything less is disrespectful.
Xavier Brenneman yea, you can get so caught up in how it drives and the sound and the speed and then suddenly break out in a cold sweat when you realize your out on the road in a $50,000,000.00 car..yea, your gonna want to slow it down.
You can drive it, or any car, like that if you have excellent mechanics and money for replacement parts.
Xavier Brenneman you are right, 33million $, you gonna be careful, I dont think insurance will cover that.
Beautiful when you put subtitles at 1:50 and the roar of the engine considers it ''Music ''.
Even the YT algorythm had to admit it
One of the most incredible sounds I think I’ve ever heard.
Even over 50 years after the 250 GTO came out it still excites me more than these Aventadors and Bugatti's and Mclarens etc.... This is without a question my favorite car of all time, sadly i will never come close to owning one but knowing that things like these are still around makes me happy.
Agreed.... I play this clip with loud speakers every so often... always leaves me happy listening to that v12.
I hate Bugatti Veyron, that's good for a rapper video or kitsch persons. But I think McLaren F1- BMW is a great car.
You could buy like 20 buggatis for one too.
sereno353 you'll appreciate the bugatti if you're an engineer.
gurbash washere Horrible design! Horrible taste!
Without a doubt, the most special car,in the most special backdrop, with one special owner, and the greatest automotive channel out there. This is the greatness of the Ferrari 250 GTO.
Maybe I missed it in comments below but what I take away from this is the respect Derek has for his dad, the great Phil Hill. He's a good kid. As a father myself, you can see that he loved his Dad a lot. That to me is as every bit important as all the car related stuff. I hope some of you caught that aspect of this video. It's huge and not to be overlooked.
Absolutely. It speaks highly of Phil as a father to hear the admiration his son has for him.
52 millions dollar car wtf
Proven ownership by Phil Hill? $50 million is the starting point.
costs half of a doodle by Picasso or Pollock on a canvas
I believe they only made 32 of the Ferrari 250 GTO that's why they're expensive.
It's the white tiger equivalent of the automotive world. Even white tigers can give birth to new baby cubs. 250 GTO can't.
The 1964 version is much rarer. Like...three in this life. hope Enzo builds more there.
Would love to see his insurance bill for a $40 million car haha
Interesting because Top Gear couldn't / wouldn't afford it a few years back.
In the Uk you get classic insurance for classic cars (very old cars) I came to this video after seeing a gto 250 owned by a patient at work. He told me it was estimated at £28.5million and his insurance is £150 a year, basically nothing
Don't be silly.
Probably self-insured.
no insurance company would insure these cars
That engine doesn't roar. It sings!
The Italians had a penchant for opera, that's for sure.
Absolutely nothing comes close to the sound this beautiful machine makes.
Nothing.
4:13 to 4:36 overwhelming engine sound. Perfect V12 eargasm
I only have ears for V8's.
I never thought a car could give me goosebumps from hearing the sound of the engine. This one does.
I never thought a car video could bring tears to my eyes. This one did.
99.74% like to dislike ratio
I love the visibility out of the windscreen and looking at this car I don't understand why people think 20" rims look good on anything.
But the seating position is insane.
Driven like it was meant to be and not cooped up in a museum.... practically kissing the guard rail @ 5:30 is just plain awesome!
3 years on and I keep revisiting this video. It's just perfect. A truly special car with a great story, affable and articulate owner, beautifully shot and edited, wonderfully judged music and THAT SOUND as it's blasted up the road. A fantastic effort all round.
I have to come back and watch this video every couple months. It is absolutely extraordinary. Amazing story, amazing filming, amazing car. The sound of this car gives me goosebumps and chills.
Same here… this and Peter Giacobbi’s TR… Absolutely stunning cinematography and story.
I don't normally like older Ferrari cars, but when I do, they are impossible to own.
Not for the wealthy. Some people can't afford a Yugo.
I'm in the Testarossa range right now. But lets say I did sell a few properties and slept in a tent... I still can't have this car. Wealth can't get you everything. Some automobiles are impossible to own.
walperstyle
the problem isnt money its rarity. just trying to find some to sell you one would be a huge challenge
walperstyle Just don't buy a Testarossa. It's the ugliest Ferrari, perhaps even the ugliest car ever made. Unless you meant the 250 Testarossa in which case you'd have to sell your properties and live in a Tent too :D
um...I grew up in the 80's. How dare you claim my generations supercar ugly!
Wonderful to see such driving on top of the interesting history. Love how the wipers struggle in the wind at 5:20
No stereo needed, the car is it’s own soundtrack.
this is truly this channels finest hour. it is probably the best car video on youtube. the view from the cockpit, driver giving one of the most valuable and iconic cars in motoring history all the hell its built to take. freakin awesome!
Without a doubt the 250 GTO is the best car ever made. This video is your best yet. The sound, the story everything about it. That guy has to be one of the luckiest guys in world to be able to call that magnificent work of art his car!
I can not get enough of the videos you all create. They are rare, beautiful, and inspiring. As a gear head I thank you for sharing videos putting a spotlight on the beauty of these machines and the passion of the owners, rather than just the "name" and price tag. I sit around and wait for the new one to release and I am only taken away once again by your art. Thank you.
Is this the greatest RUclips car video ever made? Maybe not, but it's gotta be in the top 10. The production value & sound quality are both top notch. & the sounds.... my god the sounds!
By far my favourite Petrolicious episode. Incredible scenery, beautifully filmed, starring one of the most valuable cars with a glorious sounding V12, together with a humble, but definitely worthy owner.
I'm happy he drives that car like it was meant to be driven instead of throwing it into a shed or museum or some crap. He keeps it alive and strong!
I'm one of those few people who actually think the Series 2 looks better. It's an astonishingly beautiful car, and that sound... Perfect.
Another stunning film. What people don't realise is how important the sound is here in these films. Some say sound is fifty percent of a movie. That is certainly true when making a film about the GTO. The sound element is so difficult to do and is overlooked by so many channels. Well done!
I've driven one of these into a paint booth, best yet scariest few minutes of my life.
These videos are amazing! I'm enjoying every second of them.
HistoricRacingHD I feel you
I wish Ferrari would make vintage reissues. :)
You can always find a good quality replica, which would be identical in every technical aspect, but would have no history or true value, for a minute fraction of the price.
This wouldn't work, because modern cars need to have safety equipment like a third brake light or airbags. If Ferrari would make a reissue it wouldn't be road legal
There's a guy in New Zealand makes replicas of these, but not the series two.
GTO Engineering makes Ferrari reconstruction cars, which are equal or better than the original ie: true copies of superb quality, look them up, UK based Ferrari experts.......
@@georgipartsalev6193 BECK 550 Porsche Spyder., better than the original.
Thank you
Thank you Ferrari engineer
No other car could be compared to this one
Ps. Compared to electric cars, this has a soul, you can feel there's something special in it
One of the best I’ve ever seen on here thank you🇮🇹
BEST car video on RUclips... Winner : Petrolicious !

What a wonderful beast.
I loved the camera shot that made me feel like I was in the passenger seat. Wow.
Well done!
I'm a 21-year-old watching this is 2019 and I don't think I've ever heard a better sounding car
That V12 still sounds so beautiful
The sound is like playing with a satisfying toy, it always delivers
The very best 250 GTO video and audio and story and film I have ever seen, felt or experienced. Run it through your stereo and turn up the driving scenes. Thank you very much
its pretty cool knowing that this world famous car made its debut at the 12 hours of sebring because i live in sebring about 5 miles away from the track.
These videos are so beautiful, they share the passion of these cars with the audience with very professional footage, sound, music and stories. I love Ferrari’s and watching this I just want to drive the car now as the experience of watching the video made me feel that. Very well done, thankyou. 😊
The sound of those down shifts are epic!
I watched this with headphones on, and i must say, my body just cried...
Arguably the greatest sounding engine of all time.
I agree, the holy grail of Ferrari, such a gorgeous machine.

Thank you for excluding music when the V12 was singing 😍. Great video
Gorgeous images here, an iconic, rare and beautiful racer shot wonderfully while being pushed hard; can't beat it. That sound is just invigorating.... I think it truly appeals to the instintual beast within "Hear me ROAR... and be afraid!"
It's sad that they don't make awesome cars like these anymore... I think it's even sadder that kids now a days don't appreciate old cars and the history they have. They are more interested in Bugatti's, Lamborghini's and any other modern day poster car.
M Rod Yeah, where they care more about what kind of engine it has, how much power it produces, how fast it is, how much it costs in comparison to its competitors, and how fast it can lap the Nurburgring. I feel you.
M Rod I'm 24 years old and this is my all time favorite car. I love this car to death. I also love the Miura, the 300SL, the 250 GT, the Dino 246 GT, the 65 Impala, the 67 Impala, the Shelby Cobra 427 S/C...I could keep on going. I also love the LP670, the SLS AMG, the Aventador, the V12 Vantage and the Noble M600. To put it simply, I love cars irrespective of when it was made or how large the engine is.
I remember when I first saw the 250 GTO...10 seconds was all it took and it was my all time favorite car. I think the reason why my generation has a fascination for all things modern is quite simply because we've never been exposed to these cars, we never grew up seeing cars like the 250 GTO or anything I list. We grew up seeing Skylines and Lambos. I think you'd be surprised how many people my age do love these cars. That said, you're right...far too many don't even know about these amazing cars. My generation aren't the brightest.
Yeah you are right. My dream car is Ferrari F-40.
M Rod Don't worry theres some out there who genuinely cherish the simplicity and the awe inspiring elements these cars have brought to the world. Newer cars make you feel numb in comparison to cars of this era. Always a tradeoff with advancing in technology...
***** Remember the LOLs the GTR had at LeMans flipping twice and nearly killing 2 drivers?...And you dream about that? haha
I wanna take a moment to admire the set of steel nuts this man has to absolutely ravage a $40 million car 🙇🏽♂️🙇🏽♂️🙇🏽♂️
@Wesley Seqhobane - I wouldn't say he was ravaging it, more like driving it the way it was designed to be driven - precisely, carefully and with respect for its abilities. The man is the son of the late world famous driver, Phil Hill, so I'm sure he is more than capable of protecting this valuable bit of history.
Its 52M$
Now 70mil in 2020
@@shubhamdahekar2451 i think one sold for like 72million
I once had the honour of being driven around Donington Circuit by David Piper in a 330 (he lost half one of his legs filming Le Mans with Steve Mc Queen), he told me about the time when he was a young racer and he and his mate managed to buy a 250 GTO out of winnings from racing and loaded it it on a ship at Southampton and then worked as deck hands to pay their passage to South Africa where they drove it all day and night from Cape Town to kyalami circuit to win, got pissed at the party and with a terrible hangover drove back the next day to ship out. Heroic times, heroic men, no prima donnas, just proper people racing proper cars you can relate to.
in italy the gto is now protected like ART????? and this show us what a gto is piece of history
Fantastic!
The most beautiful sound I've never heard!
I legitimately started crying.
That in car view was just amazing. Thankyou.
Almost the whole video - driving footage and sound combined with the interview. This is the proper way to shoot and to provide footage!
Find myself watching / listening to this video every couple years and it's always thoroughly enjoyable. Particularly good work guys.
One of the best videos on motoring ever made , simply epic~!
epic car, epic history , epic driver , epic interview...
04:12 to 04:44 is beyond a lottery win...I can't even dream this perfectly. Thanks Petrolicious, that POV and soundtrack are conveyed in a way without parallel.
the sound! the sound! the small gap between gear changes. it is perfection, driving perfection. take all of the new super car and sequential gearboxes, i just want to be slower in a cacophony of dreams.
I only recently came upon this RUclips channel and its already become one of my favourites
Beautiful car, beautiful sound! Also this video was shot very well!
bravo Petrolicious! Best video every and I have seen all of your videos. My fave will always be the 62 but the sound raises hair on my neck. Whoever thumbs downed this video does not like cars what so ever
That sounds brilliant, I could listen to it all day.
The 250GTO was the first car I ever fell in love with. A 1/32 scale Revel slot car was my first. Still absolutely gorgeous. The '63 is my favorite year.
What a glorious sound from that motor. A car you have to be actively involved with at every moment. I cringe thinking something is going to jump onto the road when you're airing it out. But then that raucous sound probably sends them running for cover. Thanks for being a great steward of automotive history.
This guy knows how to drive, wow.
He is Phil Hill's son
One of my favourite ferrari's.
Yes !!!!!
Amazing Ferrari!!!
love the video, even better the car and even better the sound!
love this gens cars.... I'm 19 and this is one of my dream cars
Every now and then I need to come here to see the most beautiful car that exists on earth....
Every year I come back to watch this masterpiece. Love every second of it.
While the F40 is in my opinion, still the greatest Ferrari ever made this one is certainly a very close second!
Paperairpain this is a car that was designed for the track, actually road racing so yes it will be amazing on the street but its not like hoping in a 330 gt you've really got to drive these cars hard just to get the temp up to an acceptable level and so you can drive these cars on the street but best enjoyed on an empty road like this.... or a track much like the f40
i agree.... but any ferrari from this era will be better in terms of feel... although i admit that this is the greatest car ferrari ever made my favourite is the 196s dino of the late 50's as that engine was designed by vitorrio jano
RootsRockRebel You expect to come on this video and comment about F40 and expect to get away with it? F40 is a completely different era buddy, its the 250 GTOs grandchild. Can you compare LaFerrari with F40? According to me the LaFerrari is the best car on paper and on land.
But this GTO beats that too!
5:09 literally gave me goosebumps
That 250 GTO sounds like my B18 Honda but the Ferrari actually moves when its making that noise not like my Honda ;'(
I thought those b18 went extinct, because they suck.
Imagine a buffalo crossing the road. A red Ferrari is the most beautiful present you can give to your eyes and ears.
I remember seeing Derek racing a Daytona Cobra at the TT Trophy at Goodwood. His co-driver was his Dad. I love the GTO though, my favourite is a particular '63 chassis but officially re-bodied with a '64. It was driven by my favourite driver, another Hill - Graham.
I've had a crisis
no modern Ferrari will ever be cooler and more beautiful than this one.
Any car that can make you smile like that whether you want or not while you drive it can never have a true price put on it.
True words
It makes me cry, just how wonderful and beaty that 250gto car is. My number 1 car in the world is 1962-64 250gto and specially that body. Thanks to Derek and channel for best car stuff here. Perfect.
A modest bloke despite his famous father well done mate you have my respect
Wow he drives the car as it used to be
I heard that car at Sebring. And at the 61 race, I got a piece of the winner's wreath from Phil Hill. He drove with Olivier Gendebien that year, I believe. They were driving a 250 TR, one awesome car in every respect. The famous contemporary Scottish Drive, Innes Ireland once wrote that the GTO was the most enchanting car he had ever had to drive during a whole weekend in the country. He just could not praise it highly enough.
This was the order of finish for the 1962 Sebring 12-Hour

I watch this video to remind me how a real V12 Ferrari engine certainly does sound like 'ripping silk''. Fabulous.
The roar from that ferocious V12 just sounds so eargasmic!
This car was and is a legend. It's my favorite car.
such a shame to see when videos of fails and other crap get 10s of millions of views but a quality video like this only gets a million...
How can a car that's so ferocious also be so lovely? SImply amazing. Great driving, too, Mr. Hill.
i can watch onboard driving all day long
