- The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music's Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It's the same spirit - stripped-down sets, an intimate setting - just a different space.
Burt Bacharach is a legend in the world of popular music. I'll name a few songs, in case you didn't know: He co-wrote "What the World Needs Now Is Love," "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head" and "Alfie." Melody is his strength. At age 92, he's teamed up here with Daniel Tashian, who's written songs for Lee Ann Womack, Tim McGraw, Martina McBride, and more recently with Kacey Musgraves. It was the album Daniel co-wrote with Kacey Musgraves, Golden Hour, that bonded Burt and Daniel. They met the day after Daniel received a Grammy for that record.
Daniel's strength is in his lyrics, and you can listen to how Burt Bacharach and Daniel Tashian meld their talents of melody and lyricism in this Tiny Desk (home) concert. The songs come from their recent EP, Blue Umbrella, which they recorded together in Nashville before the pandemic. But for this Tiny Desk, the two were thousands of miles apart. And though there's distance between them, their recent friendship feels like a deep bond. A love of songcraft brought these tremendous talents together, writing songs of friendship, songs that have been a comfort for both of them in these challenging days.

Such an incredible talent-may Mr. Bacharach rest in peace.

This is a wonderful Gift to me who has been Seriously locked down for nearly 6 months in Melbourne, Australia. Without Music I would be in a horrible mind set. I listen, I sing and I dance is my salvation everyday. God Bless all Musicians!!! We need you and we NEED YOU!
Daniel, your kindness comes through in your voice--deep sensitivity. I appreciate you and your music. Burt's music complements your voice best.
that burt sensibility .. akin to noticing when something beautiful passes by.. some completely miss it.. the rest of us are mesmerised by it

Burt Bacharach, my idol, the greatest songwriter of the 20th/21st centuries. I've seen you in concert 4 times. I'm so glad you are alive, too. Your music has been my constant companion since I was a teenager. Anyone you collaborate with is luckier than they could possibly know.
What a wonderful gift......waking up to this beautiful performance😌🥰 Love you, Mr. Bacharach❤️ God Bless🙏
Burt Bacharach, always worthy of a listen. ☺☺☺
Daniel's speech , quoting Andy Warhol brought me to tears tonight.
As an artist who has struggled like everyone has been with these tough times ,
I feel emboldened because of what he said, to keep creating music. to keep telling my truth. to keep affirming the world that we really want to live in , in this country and in this world.
Then to hear Burt in his 90's talking and still creating......and hear him talk about the importance of the work...........the music.
Thank you guys so very much. I'm off to buy your new record!
Beautiful work, Burt and Daniel. I find these songs very touching. They have withstood daily listens for months.
The Legend, Mr. Burt Bacharach! Thanks Mr. Bacharach :)
Burt Bacharach is an inspiration. Daniel Tashian is one of best melody-writers around right now (and has been for at least 10-15 years - go get every Silver Seas album you can find). They are wonderful together. Now we need a vinyl edition of their record together.
This is so beautiful. Thank you. God bless you Mr. Bacharach. You have had my undying devotion my entire life, ever since Walk on By. These new tunes are lovely. You still play the keys so well.Good way to keep up your spirits during these virus days. Daniel your voice is so soothing. Bless you.
Thank you Burt.
Long live Burt, my man. Your music graced me and hundreds million others. And your music is shaped only by your mind and soul, transcending limitation of time, and it is like building a beautiful house in others’ brain, which becomes home. When I reach the door to my place, and turn the key, you will be there, still in love with everything beautiful.
Literally covered in goosebumps within the first few seconds.... ❤
Burt wrote the music to some of the biggest hits of all-time like Close To You by the Carpenters, I Know I Will Never Love This Way Again by Dionne Warwick and Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head by BJ Thomas. He also wrote The Look Of Love which has been covered by many artists. Burt's talent will shine forever in recorded music and in the minds of all of us that have heard his genius. RIP Burt.
Beautiful music and lyrics. Rather haunting. Keep 'em coming!
Thanks for your words, Daniel, and to you and Burt for the music....beautiful...
Omg! You guys made me cry... This is beautiful and I love to see so talented musicians, Mr. Bacharach, I mean, it's really wonderful to enjoy him again.
Merci pour ce beau cadeau.
My late husband and I both shared a love of Burt Bachrach and actually got to see and hear him live in concert in Honolulu. Thanks for this.
I’m counting myself blessed to have seen Burt Bacharach in concert back in ‘99 in Portland. Love your music, Burt. ❤️❤️❤️
Burt you are our hero
Burt Bacharach is just a genius.
This so wonderful! Daniel’s vocals are stunning and Burt plays with such grace and genius
Incredible!
NO ONE writes like Burt!
Burt Bacharach!! 🤩🤩🤩🤩
Mr. Bacharach...saw you with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra some years back. Almost unable to get my two tickets as your concert sold out in two days. When you sang "Alfie," near the conclusion of the performance with your piano, illuminated by a single beam of spotlight in the darkened concert hall, I realized at that moment, that that was the greatest concert experience in my life. Not even Paul McCartney's marathon four hour stadium shows could match the emotional intensity you brought to "Alfie." And you showed great patience autographing every single person's request that same evening outside the stage door. Would also like here to draw your attention to a young band that sort of continues your musical style through their own original compositions...your style evident in songs like, "Say A Little Prayer," "Do You Know the Way to San José," "Raindrops Keep Fallin on My Head," and the trumpet-driven notes of "This Guy's In Love With You," as performed by Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass. They're called, "Jenny and the Mexicats," from a RUclips performance at the NPR studios entitled, "Jenny and Mexicats: NPR Music Tiny Desk Conert (15 min. 16 sec.)." The lead singer and songwriter, Jenny Ball, plays the trumpet and speaks in the Queen's English and is from England, the band is a mixture of English, Spanish, and Mexican players. They are based in Mexico, but tour North America extensively. There's some "Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid," in all their music. One commentor wrote, when Jenny plays the trumpet, I feel like riding a horse while being chased by the police. Enjoy the Mexicat video and thank you for providing us with so many truly wonderful escapist songs.

A collaborative partnership like this one creates only beauty.
Amazing.. Burt's music always hits me in places no other music seems to hit. In complete awe that you're still creating such beautiful work Burt, you are an everlasting inspiration to this musician, thank you so much
Blue Umbrella is beautiful. I saw an earlier interview with Daniel and Burt saying they were continuing to write together. Hope to see a full album. I'll have to settle for the Blue Umbrella EP until then.
Good soulfull music. Still got those hip harmonies after all these years, that surprise you, that move you almost to tears with one strong chord change. Sounds great. Daniel's lyrics are also really fitting. "You would have liked it". Breathtaking.
Alfie is in my Top Ten of favorite songs.
“What’s it all about...”

"Mr. Burt Bacharach everyone!"
Dear Daniel, I corresponded with IKEA to find out how to access your wonderful song "Book of Dreams". AND-- the head of communications personally responded!! That song should certainly be a classic children"s song. Just watched Tiny Desk and heard you speak to us all. What a gift you are to the world. Catherine Flear. Beeton Ontario Canada. Keep well!
This is soo beautiful 🖤
this is so lovely
Lovely.
Whoaaa, didn't even know the legend was still alive and well, big ups & respect !!!
Amazing, I would love that this was on spotify
If Tashian is new to you then it's worth digging out his Silver Seas album. Also his kids' album from last year I Love Rainy Days is packed with extraordinarily good songwriting. The man knows a good tune.
Steve Jackson Thanks. Yes, he is new. The amount of talent currently living in Nashville is incredible. Through my phone over the last few months I’ve been on a tour of the yards, living rooms and garage studios of Middle Tennessee.
They have a new release of the show they cowrote to promote which is a feat in itself. Burt had pledged never to write another musical after some bad feelings about how Promises. Promises had been produced and managed. He's so incredibly special. Having seen his show 3-4 times, I have so much admiration for his musicality and commitment to showcasing talented vocalists. And the live recording of him performing the Sydney (AU) Symphony is an incredible collection of his work.
We need "What The World Needs Now Is Love" Tiny Desk Performance!!!!!
These are just so beautiful, the last tune had me welling up for some reason.
Amen on Country looking a different direction a year from now. It better
