The "spyglass" framing in Babes In The Woods is a reference to silent cartoons and movies, basically a way to have the audience know to focus on a specific section. The whole ep is a love letter to classics like Felix the Kat and Little Nemo comics
Babes in the Wood is a sad, old story about "two children, abandoned in a wood, who die and are covered with leaves by robins." (Wikipedia) Really dark and sad, this episode 💔 What a cliffhanger to end on!
what i like about beatrice is that her story is exactly like those of older fairytale characters, like the grimm tales: character (usually a child) is a brat, is punished by some magical force or animal and has to learn how to be good in order to be turned back to human, etc. it's understandable why she's so pushy towards wirt and greg, since she just wants to be turned back into a human, but she also kinda deserves the consequences of her actions
"Does High School even exist here?" Right?? Now that you've seen the final episodes over on patreon, I can finally say more about the whole time period wonkiness... Legit the first time I saw this series the entire time I was like "forget where are we... WHEN even are we??" Between their eccentric and kind of old timey clothes, usage of modern and archaic english (wirt's random poetry, 'hold on, brother-o-mine'), references to modern technology etc (knowing about dinosaurs, looking for a phone in the second episode, the rock fact rock that every home garden had in like the 80s/90s), and all the wildly different time periods and cultures of the settings, I could not place where Greg and Wirt could possibly be from, or if they even had a definitive original time. The Halloween costume reveal was so good frfr
13:34 It could be because she didn't realize it would be that easy, or more likely, in my opinion, that she was afraid of losing Lorna if Lorna was cured. So she just helped keep it from possessing her instead of curing her so she wouldn't leave.
We also don't know what happened to the spirit after that... Did it go possess someone else? If so, then now people are still in danger, but they don't have Aunty Whispers to keep it in check 😬
I think that you're the first reactors I've seen touch on the beautiful good vs. ugly evil subversion in that episode. I really appreciate y'all acknowledging that. It's a very simple twist, but it's such clever writing.
you are correct to notice a similarity between yubaba and zeniba from spirited away, and adelaide and auntie whispers, as they are all loosely based on certain aspects of the slavic folk character baba yaga, specifically yubaba and adelaide for the more negative ones and zeniba and auntie whispers for the more positive ones (though they all of course have some tones of grey)
I still can't decide what is really meant to be happening with the dream sequence... My best guess is that it's The Beast attempting to infiltrate Greg's mind with depression/despair? Like how the fun and happy times switch suddenly to the sad rainy dog scene? But Greg rejects it and just says "that's enough." And then the Old North Wind comes, but Greg beats it. But the thing I'm not sure about is the Queen of the Clouds. Does she actually exist and have the power to take them home? Is she just a random part of Greg's dream? Or is it actually The Beast making a final, more subtle attempt to influence Greg's mind? She speaks with the same sort of manner as The Beast, and she tells Greg that there's no way to save Wirt (that the situation is hopeless) but that she can take Greg "home" (maybe separate him from his brother to make him even more lost in the woods?). And then after he makes his wish to the cloud lady, The Beast says something about "our deal." Super sus.
yeah ive always assumed that the queen is actually the beast cause of they having the exact same speaking mannerism and the beast saying "we made a promise, didnt we" after the conversation
im loving the series, i cant wait for the ending! also, i would love to see you guys watch evangelion too; but its very dark and i dont know if it would fit the style of the channel.
As the woodsman said "keep hearty in both body and soul" is what you need to do to keep the Beast away

Ah that explains the title! Agreed this probably the darkest episode ending of the series.

i absolutely adored the comment about ugliness being used to portray evil and having that script flipped, ugh great commentary as always guys!

Greg wished to switch places with Wirt so Wirt could go home :)
It was the Beasts which manipulate Greg's dream to get him, after all he said "We made a promise, didnt we?

I would love to explain why Wirt wasn’t super eager to go home after you all finish the series! You may understand after you finish it!
WE 👏 DON'T 👏 DESERVE 👏 GREG

Ooh that's so cool!
He made a deal with the “angel”! The beast was manipulating Greg’s dream
Wirt and Greg are half-siblings, you were correct.

Everything will make sense when the show is over. ☺️
Gods, I cannot wait for the next reaction! 🙏🏼😊
im loving the series, i cant wait for the ending!

lol, fun fact, Auntie Whispers is voiced by Tim Curry, who portrayed the live action version of Pennywise the clown in the 1990 version of “It”.
🥺
Hiii
33:12 How old are you and Indi?
Greg is around 14-15. Wirt is 7-8
