I remember when this movie came out. Everybody thought it was just gonna be a corporate sellout, but then, after it came out, people loved it so much they were upset that it wasn't nominated for Best Animated Feature at the Oscars.
And Incase you hadn’t been to a store it sold out Lego sold Lego movie merchandise…. So Lego advertising Lego selling Lego as Lego movie Lego… no definitely not a sell out
It's *vitally* important to note that the name of the Lego set depicting the Benny's spaceship is literally called "Benny's Spaceship, Spaceship, SPACESHIP!"
For those not familiar with early 1980s Space Lego: the helmets were notorious for splitting on the chinstrap, and the chest logos on the spacement tended to wear off. Hence everything about Benny the Spaceman.
When I first saw the trailer and noticed that the 80s space guy had a broken chin strap, it gave me such a warm feeling! Certainly let me know that this movie was being made by people who truly loved Lego, and gave me hope that it would be fun. It didn’t let me down! SPACESHIP!
The lettering on Krazy Glue also comes off with regular use, so, "The kragle is Krazy glue minus the Z, y, and u". The tube is useless once the cap is glued on. It all worked pretty well, I would say.
I am not the biggest Will Farrell fan, but the look on his face when the dad realizes that he's become the villain of his son's story . . . damn. The writing was amazing. The way they forward two opposing themes: Emmet needs to learn how to be creative. He's such a follower, so incapable of independence, he's "so generic, he matches every other face in our database". On the other hand, the Master Builders need to learn how to follow directions. They're so independent they can't work together and even look down on anyone they don't feel isn't as creative as they are. And the script is able to pull off both of those lessons (in part because both following directions and being creative part of Legos play style).
If you haven't checked it out, watch the movie Stranger than Fiction, I had the same feel towards Will Ferral, but this movie made me respect him as an actor and respect the fact he must have more fun being a goofball than a walking poem, but the fact he has that range is amazing and really telling of his skill.
There's this book called The Story Book about writing and it uses a couple of movies to pull examples from and cover character and story arcs. It used Toy Story and Back to the Future and I firmly believe that if this movie had come out earlier, it would have been used as an example as well
The division in lego when they started offering licensed kits. "Lego were not supposed to do only one thing, but the licensed pieces can be Uber-cool-so learn to use all the pieces. " The fact that the alleyway has two motorcycle tires in it is a key touch. And wyldestyle builds a wooden Bat-Tumbler out of the barn, powered by pigs.
This movie is kind of similar to Matrix, normal guy meets a mystery girl who is investigating the chosen one, guts interrogated by police, meets with a guy who informs him of the prophecy. The hero at some point dies but is brought back with new powers. There’s more but that’s the gist.
This movie was such a surprise with how good it was. Definitely watch LEGO Batman as well, you might think similarly to this movie beforehand that it's an unnecessary cash grab but it's really good especially for any long time Batman fans.
I never expected the deep meaning that came from this film, I remember going in thinking it would be just silly fun. It is that, but it’s also so emotional and heartwarming. It was fun to revisit it with you!
I remember this as one of my favorite childhood movies (I loved LEGO’s as a kid) also the way that Mary reacted to the millennium Falcon coming in was Hilarious 😂
I think this is my overall favorite animated film, Lego goes so close to my childhood, and as a fan of Bionicle I can say it goes beyond into a part of my adulthood, so many memories, how much it helped me to deal with some stuff going around back then, how it was a part of me, friendships I made, among other things. I also love how very well detailed this movie is, the forshadowing about the kid was there all the way through. It is awesome (pun intended) to go crazy every once in a while with the pieces you have available, really cool stuff can come out of that even if you aren't aware you are that creative, I guess that shows how everyone is "the special". Finally, yeah, I love this Batman, he is such an a'hole lmao, I encourage Mary to watch the Lego Batman movie as well, that's a banger too.
I love that many of the sound effects were the sounds that children make as they play. The fact that you could see the thread holding up the ghost was cool as well. As you said, very meta.
Master Builders are the people who work at Lego and create the designs. The job interview consists of going into a room filled with millions of legos and competing against dozens of people to build something unique out of your own mind.
Lego has been a huge part of my life so much so that I still to this day watch Lego Ninjago (the show) unironically and for these movies to have such profound messages and for the general public to RECOGNIZE that makes me so happy
Channing tatum was superman. And the thing that vitruvius says before emmet starts his speech was something that happened because morgan freeman was frustrated because he couldnt get his lines right. I love Lego games especially, but it was always fun to build the sets. Personally I need instructions, because I have no idea what to try to build myself, and if I did it would never turn out how I want. Same with drawing, I have to be drawing based on something else irl or another drawing.
There are some diehard Lego collectors who do glue their sets together and displays them. I knew a guy who bought a 3 foot long Star Destroyer and glued it together so he could hang it from his hobby room ceiling.

He doesn't get introduced until the middle of the movie but as soon as they got to Benny the 1980s Space Guy, I had confirmation of just how much love for Lego was put into this. The chin piece on his space helmet has a stress crack in it, in the exact place those helmets from the era were notorious for cracking at. It's a small detail, one that whatever Lego executives who signed off on the movie would have had to approve of despite it being a reminder of one of the company's few less than perfect designs. The fact that they did shows that they know that it would be a nostalgic detail for anyone who grew up on the 1980s Space Sets.
Bloody love this movie! - so good to see you reacting to it! If you truly want a silly goofy animation movie to watch, I cannot stress enough ‘Chip N Dale Rescue Rangers’. It is so surprisingly funny and there is so much that will make you just gasp in awe and amazement. The amount of licenses they secured to make that movie is astronomical.
