Emile recognizes him at the petrol station because he said "Dead or alive, you're coming with me!".... Murphy said the same thing to him before they all shot him up, pre-Robocop.
I knew if I scrolled through the comments that I would find that someone already wrote it, saving me the effort.
Good work Gary.

That "not funny" TV show is a sarcastic commentary on mindless TV shows drawing in the masses. Considering how TV has evolved since then, it's pretty accurate.
That..but it was also so they could get more of an R rating instead of an NC-17 rating. The MPAA wasent going to Give it an R rating without them
It's impossible to not have a smile on your face when Murphy gives his name at the end, just a perfect fistpump moment
I mean even Murphy himself (as Robocop) smiles for the first time at that moment.
It is a total FUCK YEAH moment
Heck yes! That moment is awesome.
@@silverraven250 funny you say that, because every time he says Murphy at the end I say it loud "Fuck yeah!" in celebration of Murphy just owning the whole movie, no joke. To hear you say that just warms my heart.
I heard that in US theatres, the entire audience shouted his name even before Murphy answered the Old Man.
27:14 FUN FACT: The actress playing the secretary is Joan Pirkle, who married Kurtwood Smith a year after this movie was released. This is the movie that brought them together and as of 2022, they're still married to this day.

"Bitches leave", cracks me up every time.
The perfect 80's satire and warning on corporatism. We're closer to that world now then we've ever been, scary times.
Couple of the castmembers cracked up in that scene too.
I believe it too.
And Paul Verhoeven would refer to the actress' on set as "Bitches", but he did it in such a casual way that the crew had a tough time keeping a straight face.
And the movie was kind of prophetic on the city of Detroit also.

Clarence Boddicker is one of the greatest villains ever.
Yes he is.
Fun fact: if you listen to some of the behind-the-scenes features, Clarence Boddicker was inspired by the leader of the Nazi SS, Heinrich Himmler. The filmmakers were fascinated by the fact that a man of such incomparable evil could be such an ordinary man who wears glasses and does not exude physical power, so Clarence Boddicker is similar: he wears glasses and he is nothing special physically, but his mind is utterly evil.
Legend has it Clarence is still saying... " NENENENENENENE "
"Just give me my fuckin' phone call....."
OOH, guns, guns, guns! CMON, SAL! The Tigers are playin’… *pattapum* TONITE!………..I never miss a game.

@@happyapple4269 Total Recall above. And don’t call me Sherley.

You said it, now I don't have to.
If she loved Robocop she should love the hell out of Total Recall!
Robocop probably remembers the gunfinger spin move because as Alex Murphy I imagine he practiced that move over and over again, and then used it at work. Muscle memory. So his brain remembered it as Robocop.
That was the primary concept of using a human brain to build robocop. They wanted a “good cop” with years of service/experience so that they wouldn’t have to preprogram every possible scenario and judgement that a cop might have to experience for robo to use.
@@Jpew2007 It would make sense. Love this movie
That was the whole point of the gun spin. To show the viewer something that would carry over, so you knew the "real" Alex Murphy was still inside Robocop even before he started getting his memories back.
you guys have to remember he did it for his son, who used to watch some tv show where the main character spun his guns. this why this movie is better at showing his human side than how the reboot did it
@@humzaibrahim2953 Yep exactly, the spin move remained because it was attached to his memories with his son
I love the ending. It still gives me chills: “nice shootin’ son, whats your name?” “Murphy.” *cuts to title screen: ROBOCOP*
One of the greatest endings to a movie
This movie is amazing. It is not taking itself too seriously, it takes advantage of the R rating, it finds time for humorous in-universe news and adverts...
It is bit dated graphically, but because of the style it took I do not think it matters, it is still rather enjoyable.
The news clips and advertising are unbelievably true to modern day Detroit.
They actually pushed the limits of its R rating to the point they had to cut some really violent scenes, in order to avoid an X rating which would have limited the theaters it could play in (basically just adult theaters).
It's look is dated, it's many messages (both negative and positive) are still relevant today. And it's mostly due to how the Director put his spin on it. Such a master piece.
Lo del telediario para explicar la realidad es muy de Verhoeven, gran director de finales del S. XX. Y lo del abundante realismo violento, con mucha sangre y fluídos varios, también. Saludos-
The film struggled to get a R rating. The MPAA originally rated it X for violence (the deaths of Kinney and Murphy).
I was age 11-12 in 1987. My old man would bring home pizzas and a stack of rented movies once a week for a whole evening of '80s movies and gluttony. There were so many good films coming out in the late '80s, it seemed as if we got enjoyable ones every week. Always something to look forward to on Thursdays as a kid. Especially those with a wee bit of the 'ole ultraviolence.
YEAH, the movie were really great in the 80s. MY MOM loved movies and the previous era movies were junk mostly. GREAT to be in college/ high school to see all of these classic movies every weekend.
A Clockwork Orange, I going to have to watch that now.
pizza? omg...
this film cant be eat during watching
- Reason Alex didn't immediately die from the ambush at the beginning is he had body armor that kept him alive until the hospital.
- Alex wasn't just chosen because he was a cop who died in the field; he was an HONEST, not corrupt, headstrong, good cop who wanted to do well in law enforcement...his mindset wouldn't let him go insane in the robot armor. So OCP took his brain and face when his body died...the essence of Murphy is in Robocop
- Peter Weller was only the actor who was cheap enough, willing to be under the visor so his face isn't shown most of the movie, and can actually fit into the suit. Arnold and Stallone were considered but they were none of the above
- Paul the director was not fluent in English and missed the point of the movie at first. His wife got the script out of the trash, read it and convinced him it has a lot more substance than he read first. The key scene was when Alex goes back to visit his family home after his dreams.
- Total Recall, Starship Troopers and this movie is considered Paul's futuristic trilogy that really played to his over the top ultraviolence mixed with social commentary of society
Eh, your first point doesn't really take. Murphy's body armor actually didn't protect him because:
- Boddicker's gang shot him with a lot of high-powered firearms that could penetrate it, and
- They also shot him in areas that the armor wasn't covering. They shot his legs, literally blew off his arm, and blew a hole in his head.
Just about the only reason Murphy survived long enough for the EMT's and doctors to futilely work on him was plot.
@@DeinedEhm, that's what is actually shown in the movie, so it did. And it is not as crazy as you make it out to be :
- Boddicker's gang wasn't using "high-powered firearms", they were using shotguns, powerful but not great at penetrating even modern armor without specialized ammunition, and this is "future" armor. They would probably still cause damage through the armor and the guy DID finally die, but not kill him on the spot.
- Armor WAS covering his vitals. Them shooting him in other places would not be immediately fatal. Neither loosing his arm, nor having his legs shot would kill him on the spot. And the head shot was in the upper right area, probably only barely hurting his brain. People have survived headshots as well.
- The man DID die. That his heart was still beating when he reached the hospital is not as far fetched as you make it sound.
😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
Telling an 80's minion villain to, "Get an education." was absolutely priceless.
The director was going to pass on this movie because he felt the title made it a kids movie. But his wife read it and said he had to do it. He purposefully turned the violence in the film up to 11 as part of the satire he filled the whole film with
I'm dutch and if i ever meet Paul Verhoeven... I'm going to thank his wife first.
I thought it was the opposite. The original script was way more violence. Paul Verhoeven needed to cut out some violent screen for a PG 15 rating.
Yeah, the comics are brutally violent. I honestly think Verhoeven did them justice.
Ironically, it was still advertised to children because the 80s in America was a hell of a time.
@@WolfHreda the comics came after the movie. So the comic did not let the movie down.

Yep, and the uncut version is what she watched here. The uncut version has ED-209 shooting Kinney for quite a bit longer than the R rated version. There's a few other changes but I can't think of them now.

Kurtwood Smith as Boddicker is one of my all time favorite villains. He has so much fun with the role 😎
Yes horribley Realism villian
One of the main reasons I never watched "That 70's Show" was because I refused to see Smith as anything but as that awesome villian, Boddicker, or see him in any comedy. And I grew up in the 70's.
I do remember seeing Smith in a brief military role in the movie "Broken Arrow". Which BTW is another over the top action film that Mary should definitely check out. Kurtwood Smith's character explains the ominous meaning of the term "broken arrow".
@@x_trio_3_po333 to be fair you can say this was Reds life after that 70s show. Its makes sense all those kids drove him insane.
Another fun fact about this movie, that was a real hospital ER team working on Murphy. That's why their lingo and tone is spot on for trauma doctors in that time period.
I'll buy THAT for a dollar!!!

Little trivia. It wasn't green screen, it was actually matte painting. Someone (Rocco Gioffre) actually added bits to existing buildings, to extend them, or to make interiors look more cavernous. The practical effects in this movie are legendary!
Assuming this is your introduction the the world of Paul Verhoeven. A world where nothing is too extreme or shocking. So glad you enjoyed it.
Definitely check out the other 2 films in his sci-fi ‘trifecta’, “Total Recall” (the 1990 version, NOT the 2012 remake) with Arnold Schwarzenegger and “Starship Troopers”. He actually did 1 other sci-fi film called “Hollow Man”, but he’s mostly known for “Robocop”, “Recall” and “Troopers”.
Additionally, there are 2 sequels and a short-lived TV series based on this film, none of which had any involvement with Verhoeven. “Robocop II” is worth a look, but the rest…meh.
Yeah RoboCop became extremely popular with younger audiences and even had a kids cartoon so they took all the violence out of the 3rd film and it's terrible. The violence is why all the kids wanted to watch it in the first place as most didn't understand it was a satire.
Yeah those three films collectively are called Paul Verhoeven's Triple Dutch Trilogy.
@@shawnlopez2317 I'll never forget that, it's perfect.
@@Welsh_Dragon756 Ya growing up I even had a Robocop toy that did several of his sounds so every time I hear the leg holster sound I get hit with nostalgia hard because that was one of my favorite toys lol. It was probably from the 3rd though since it had the backpack and other attachments.
I never got to watch the series and not too sure I want to. I definitely agree that it has to be the original Total Recall with Arnold
You left out the best line in the entire movie when Red Foreman said "Bitches leave."
I've seen this movie so many times since 1987 and have never not laughed at that line.

That they loaded it with live ammo for a tech demo and at the end ED209 is demoted to parking attendant which it STILL fails at!
At the gas station (or petrol station), when Robocop said, "Dead or alive, you're coming with me." That's what the creep recognized to know it was Murphy.
1. Serve the public trust. 2. Protect the innocent. 3. Uphold the law.
18:14: Emil recognized Murphy after he said “Dead or alive, you’re coming with me.”
Kitty isn’t even phased by Murphy being shot up. She’s just chilling on your lap getting petted.

Joan Pirkle and Kurtwood Smith met on the set of Robocop, married the next year and have two kids.
The sci fi "trilogy" from this director is Robocop, Totall Recall and Starship Troopers. My personal favorite is Starship Troopers.
I was born and raise in Dallas, Tx. Seeing this movie really brings me memories. Every time I go running in downtown, some scenes from this movie begin to play in my head, especially when I pass across the City Hall building.

He may be slow but in this age, he is beyond top of the line. A true to form juggernaut, unstoppable and indefatigable. A sheer monument of will power.
He maybe slow, but his bullets aren't.
The thing you thought was a green screen. Was actually a Mat Painting. And the high guy is always funny to me. Its a jungle out there who hoooo. And the secretary Clarence was flirting with became his wife in real life.
Brutal action, lots of blood, social commentary, classic one-liners, and top of that-time special effects, welcome to Verhoeven's cinema
Fun fact: This movie had a toy line despite its R rating
Had a cartoon show as well
Of course it did! It was the 80s.
This was filmed in Dallas in the summer 1986. When Murphy and Lewis were chasing Clarence's gang in the beginning you can see Reunion Tower in the background. Peter Weller was baking in the suit during the filming. Now you should watch the next Robocop movies and the remake. I was in high school when they made this.
When I saw this in theaters, the shot where Clarence ran through toxified Emile was a bit longer. Emile splattered all over the windshield, and then Clarence turned on the windshield wipers. It was hilarious, but I haven't seen that extended scene in any home release. I hear the Criterion has an extended cut with this scene restored.
LOL! I loved your reaction to when Emil goes into the toxic waste. "Ehhhh! I can't look...Just die already!!" Haha!
I saw this movie at the drive-in when it came out and I was blown away by the special effects
As a child watching this, I never fully realized how messed up and dark this movie is...but I loved it. I'd buy that for a dollar!

This movie is the reason why I started to love the cyberpunk genre.
80's kids are built different. This was one of my favorite movies as a kid. It's crazy how violent something can be then, but nowadays a movie gets a harsh rating if they drop an F bomb or 2. I really loved this movie growing up, but the toxic waste part always made me look away. I also definitely recommend as others have: Total Recall (!!!) and Starship Troopers. Such great movies!

Favorite as a kid. And when my mom asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I said “ I want to be robocop.” lol vivid memory. Glad you got to finally see this classic.
This is one of Paul Verhoeven's sci-fi/action parody movies that was actually commentary on society (the other being Starship Troopers). It is a satire of corporate greed and excess that was common in the 80's as well as a comment on the "War on Drugs" and the decay of the inner cities. One of the best sci-fi movies of the 80's.
Thanks for saying this. Most people just love the action and violence but don't understand the narrative.
The third in the satire trilogy is Showgirls, which flopped, because people didn't get the satire and thought it was too over the top. One thing that comes to mind was how the dancers are casually discussing eating dogfood, but afterwards a woman who had been a professional dancer when the movie took place admitted it was a common thing since that was all they could afford to eat.

The 80's were a wild time. This had a toy line and a Saturday morning cartoon tie in. You know, because it appealed to kids.
Aliens had a toy line and video game for kids too. I loved being a little kid in the 80's and early 90's growing up with these movies. I think a lot of parents back then didn't even bat an eye at this stuff
Same with Rambo. People weren't ultra-delicate snowflakes back then.

Robocop was the very 1st movie I saw on VHS back in the 80s when I was 7 or 8 years old. It blew my mind as a kid watching it, especially the part when the dude got the toxic waste bath, awesome 👌
I saw this movie when I was 6, the 90s were wild.
If you enjoyed this movie, I recommend watching Starship Troopers from the same director.
Some of the dated effects are hammed up on purpose in a very tongue in cheek way. The film is dripping with satire that even my young self noticed when it came out. It’s a real gem of 80s cinema.
One thing I always liked is when he fights ED209 and his visor is broken you see a glimpse of his humanity in his eye. Well done scene.
The actor who plays Robocop is a classical historian. If I remember correctly he teaches out of Syracuse university.
So he's actually Dr. Peter Weller, PhD. Funny how he never chose to study Robotics.....🤔

The glorious 1980s and the ultraviolent action movies and practical effects that’s so much more real than CGI imo. I was about 8-10 when I watched this movie with my parents when they rented this movie on VHS :D

The city scapes were not green screen... the film was shot in Dallas Texas when the downtown was ultra modern...I’m from Fort Worth Texas which is the cooler of the two cities that we generally call The Metroplex...keep up the great work and cheers!
Total recall and starship troopers should be next. It’s basically verhoevens unofficial sci-fi trilogy.

Completely agree about San Junipero. That episode was amazing.
Best part was when the guy drove into the can of toxic waste 😈 he was so saggy and wasn’t able to speak. It didn’t haunt me, as a kid, I was so grossed out and laughing so much 🤣
I don't think she was ready for a classic Paul Verhoeven movie. And I here for it.
To most people, it's a Verhoeven masterwork. Verhoven to me, is a darker version of Spielberg for what he directs. People who do reactions to Robocop, I want to start to ADD to my Subscriptions list!
The theme tune was originally written for terminator.
The terminator theme tune was written for this movie.
They decided to switch the themes at the last second before release, deciding they each suited the other movie better.
There is even a trailer for RoboCop with the terminator music.
Would that be the last second before the release of Terminator in 1984, or the last second before the release of Robocop in 1987? Although since both are Orion releases, it is true that Terminator music was used for a Robocop trailer.
