The part where Will Farrel's character asks his kid, "If the construction guy could say something to Lord Business right now, what would he say?" , knowing that Lord Business represents him, and his son looks him in the eye and says, "You don't have to be the bad guy", just kills me. Imagine realizing that your son thinks you are the villain in his story. I would feel like the biggest failure as a parent. It gets me, every time.
Fun Fact: The people who worked on the movie thought they should have to cast someone else for “Good Cop” but Liam Nelson managed to proved to them that he was able to do it.
So the writer-directors of this movie didn't get nominated for Best Animated Feature and everyone said it was one of the biggest snubs of the year. But they ended up making an Oscar out of Legos, proceeded to make "Into the Spider-Verse" and won the Oscar by a landslide. Amazing real life story.
IMO, one of the biggest snubs of all time, not just the year. The Lego Movie is still in the top tier of films of the 2010s, not even just animation. But the animation itself kind of even still doesn't quite get the credit it is due. Truly remarkable stuff.
spider-verse isn't good animation imo....The Lego Movie deserved all the praise. SOOOOOOOOO much work has been put into that, a lot of stuff only children and lego fans would get due to the experience of just fiddling around with legos. Its rare to see a movie have so much love poured into it.
@@MarkHWillson It fooled me into thinking it was stop-motion, and I'm someone who is obsessed with LEGO. They added wear, tear, fingerprints and more. The techniques they used with the camera and lighting also really sells the effect. Not to mention the clever character rigging where they either detach the arms and legs, or they substitute other LEGO pieces to achieve unconventional Minifig movement. Even motion blur is achieved using other LEGO pieces. My personal favorite example is when the tennis ball comically flattens a Minifig in Cloud Cookooland, and leaves behind a few tiles in the general shape of that Minifig.
I was really shocked at how subversive this was when it came out. A few decades ago, Lego was struggling, and they discovered they could make better earnings by releasing licensed sets for stuff like Star Wars. While doing this saved the company financially, it caused a bit of consternation because the company/toy's ideology had always been about using basic blocks to build whatever you imagined - that was the freedom and the joy of Lego. So, the company went through a bit of an identity crisis, and suddenly some of their biggest customers started to be adults who wanted these big, elaborate licensed sets that they could build and put on shelves - it was kind of the antithesis of what Lego was supposed to be. So the fact that they took all of that stuff and put it into this narrative was really surprising to me. By all rights, this should have been a 90-minute toy commercial filled with dad jokes and toilet humor, but they actually made a movie about creativity and letting go and kinda thumbing their nose at their lucrative licensing deals. It was very surprising.
TBH I can't begin to wrap my mind around how that works, I had one lego set as a kid it was a motor boat and I can understand that kind of toy for a kid at a price a kid can save up for. I fully refuse to buy lego at today prices for myself and would never pay that much for some toy for a kid that comes in a million tiny pieces begging to get lost and accidentally thrown out
I think the best part is how the movie doesn't pick a "right" way to play with LEGO If you want to go and follow the instructions, go ahead If you want to build whatever pops into your head, that's completely fine Because at the end of the day, the LEGO play experience is about the freedom to play how you want.
For anyone who ever sat in a pile of LEGOs with friends, building stuff: somebody always tried to claim ALL the parts of one color, like Batman did. That line hit so deep. This movie gets it.
The funny thing is, Batman uses some red and yellow (mostly transparent yellow) pieces in a fair amount of his builds, especially in the LEGO Batman Movie. Though to be fair, the vast majority of his pieces are either "black or very, very, dark grey."
I LOVE the little details they put in, like the cracked chinguard on Space Guys Helmet. EVERY SINGLE Lego Helmet i EVER had broke just like that in just a few days... EVERY. SINGLE. ONE.
It portrays an authoritarian government that tells everyone to do. Everyone listens, everyone obeys. Except the master builders. They are the revolutionists, or the 'underground' as it were.
As a kid during the late 70s and early 80s, my whole Lego life was the classic space with the blue and grey bricks. We would build sets and watch Star Wars. No Star Wars lego then. So this movie played an awesome tribute to the classic space and that spaceship in the movie actually has the number on the side that was one up from a famous 1979 spaceship they made. Just a great tribute to a part of our lives. Also, I still have my blue spaceman from the 80s. ;)
Same. I loved the Space Police and Space systems as well as the Castle system. I even had the Space Monorail set. If they weren't so expensive I'd still be building with them today.
Ditto. Born in '73 and I was all about the space Legos as a kid. I wish I still had mine, but I gave all my Lego to a friends kid in the mid 90s. I still stand by that decision, it's just a bittersweet "can't have your cake (Lego) and eat (give it away) too" situation.
Original Blacktron is best. Especially that base. 😎(Although as a kid I never understood that their black visors were meant to be see-through, and wondered how they managed to walk around without bumping into things.)
With the crack in the chin of the helmet. That was my favorite part when I saw thin in the theater. No matter how carefully you did anything, that stupid helmet would crack right there.
When I first saw the movie, I admit my expectations weren't high (how good can a movie based on legos can be?), but I was pleasantly surprised to find that not only it was good, actually, it was excellent with a really interesting story that keeps you invested. Everything in the movie was AWESOME.
I had the same feeling when I first heard that it was a thing, but my expectations were raised when I saw the first trailer. Was it possible that this could really be *good*?
Honestly I almost didn't love it. I was about ready to walk out about 1/3 of the way in. I don't know what it was that changed, but it totally turned a corner for me. Now its awesome.
I think the reason why Emmet's speech is so impacting is that Lego isn't just for one type of child, and it's not just for children either, Lego is basically for everyone to have fun and to have a great level of creative enjoyment. And I think Emmet summed up the Lego brands entire purpose to people that play with them.
This movie honestly had no right being as good as it was. The humour was so on-point it was unbelievable. I think the only other movie that surprised me so much was "Storks"

Aside from the live action bits, this movie is 100% CGI, but it was animated to look like stop-motion. Even so, everything, with the exception of the "relics", were modeled with lego pieces. The 3D models of which were provided by lego. If I remember correctly, lego gave the studio access to their proprietary software for building kits.
Yeah, I believe they also put a lot of effort into making sure that the movements are consistent with physical lego, so the obvious example would be that since normal lego legs can't bend then neither can the ones in the film.

When this movie came out, I was getting back into LEGO. Now, I have a huge LEGO city and buy the big buildings and have all kinds of cool scenes almost 100% because of this movie! Great reaction!
This is my favorite movie of all-time! The animation is absolutely beautiful, the characters are amazing, and the action sequences are fantastic! The way it captures the Lego brand so accurately with many references is also the best part of the movie!
This is Chris Pratt's best role. It's just a great movie for everyone. My niece and nephew watched it for like a year straight all day everyday. Glad you enjoyed yourself!
This is one of the best animated films of all time. This is one of the best comedies of all time. It's high up on my list with Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Hot Fuzz and others.
Apart from the end credits, title cards, and a few videos in the background, the entire movie is CGI animation made to be as similar to real lego stop motion as possible. I absolutely love the style and it hasn't aged a day since the movie's released
I was born in the late 60s, and grew up with Lego, but not the modern version where everything is based on something or is part of a set. I had a literal bucket of random Lego, and a big, grey mat on which to put them. The mat itself was nothing, it was just the base to hold whatever I could imagine. I always felt that the modern versions were so limiting, telling you what to make, giving you only what you needed to make it, and charging you way too much money for the "privilege" of doing it. So the message of unfettered imagination, of making whatever you can dream of, of not limiting yourself to what fits perfectly together according to the instructions, really resonated.
Unikitty is my favorite character. Nice to see someone else appreciate her, too lol. None of my friends could stand her. But like you with Will Arnett, I also just love Alison Brie ever since seeing her in Community.
We had a lot of Legos when I was a kid. Including a couple of the spaceman ones. They did always break in that one spot on their helmets. When I saw that I in the film I was blown away. That was such a deep cut.
"This feels like it'd be in some kid's room" Dude, that's what my room looked like for all my childhood and most of my teens XD I think I still have like 5-6 boxes full of legos back home :D
As awesome as the whole movie is, Benny's sheer joy when he finally gets to build a spaceship is the absolute highlight of this. Just so happy! XD "SPACESHIP!"
Basically this is a movie abt cosmic horror (like call of Cthulhu type shit) Emmet sees another world by interacting with a mysterious artifact. President Business collects these artifacts and uses them to do unspeakable and impossible things like erasing someone’s frickin face or permanently cutting off their head. Emmet finally gets a hazy glimpse of the other world and returns with impossible knowledge and terrifying comprehension
7:30 "A bunch of others we don't need to mention..." I respectfully disagree... those lego sets and different universes were a great childhood for me. 🤣❤🤣❤🤣
All the in-universe stuff in this movie is completely CG animated. However, the stuff happening throughout the credits was actually done in stop-motion. If you ever find yourself taking a tour of Warner Studios you will find the set they used on display there
It was way before my time but Charlie Days 1980’s blue spaceman Lego character having a cracked helmet was an amazing touch. I don’t think I ever came across one of those that wasn’t cracked in that same spot.
@VKunia a lot of the yellow LEGO heads are made with two different faces on them(front and back) and the good cop/bad cop is quite a funny representation of that 🙂
Morgan Freeman's "write all that down" line was not in the script. Freeman said that after being confused by frequent changes to the script, and it was added as a joke.
The part where Morgan Freeman mispronounced Dumbledore, was actually in studio...was tired of the retakes so the kept in the whole Audio of him getting frustrated 😂
For WW2 stuffs, I know people suggested The Pacific a lot after Band of Brothers but since its a Series, for movies i would suggest Flags of our Fathers and especially the 2nd one Letters From Iwo Jima.
12:44 "I think I just found my favorite character." Well, you know, there's _also_ a movie called _The Lego Batman Movie,_ which came out three years _after_ this one.
Will Arnett (Batman/Bruce Wayne), Elizabeth Banks (Wyldstyle/Lucy), Allison Brie (Unikitty), Anthony Daniels (C-3PO), Charlie Day (Benny), Keith Ferguson (Han Solo), Will Ferrell (Lord Business/President Business/The Man Upstairs), Will Forte (Abraham Lincoln), Morgan Freeman (Vitruvius), Todd Hansen (Gandalf), Jonah Hill (Green Lantern), Kelly Lafferty (Lord Business’ Assistant), Graham Miller (Duplo), Liam Neeson (Bad Cop/Good Cop/Pa Cop), Shaquille O’Neal (Shaq), Nick Offerman (Metal Beard), Chris Pratt (Emmet Brickowski), Cobie Smulders (Wonder Woman), Melissa Sturm (Gail/Ma Cop), Jorma Taccone (Shakespeare), Channing Tatum (Superman), Billy Dee Williams (Lando), & Leiki Veskimets (Computer)
SPACESHIP! I had those guys, they were awesome. And I love the ambiguity here. Emmet travels beyond the universe and returns enlightened. These two gods are deciding the fate of the world, but we see how it plays out. Emmet *moves in the real world* and what does that even mean? And I love that the conclusion is not the superhero saving everyone, but empowering everyone else to also be special. To quote something completely different, 'Royalty is a fire that spreads to others.'
Fly things in stop motion is sort of possible you either edit the picture to remove the thing that is holding what you want to fly or hold the thing that you want to fly and hide your hand
I agree with you! The best characters are Batman and the Princess Unikitty. She's my absolutelly favourite, in fact I have a keychain of her with a led light in her horn and she have her own show called "Unikitty" on HBO Max. The funniest part for me is the invasion of the creatures of the Duplo World, who they have a child voices because Duplo line is designed for 4 years old kids.
it is such a genius movie they really got creative the possibilities with lego everything you see is made out of lego pieces funny visual comedy that IMO never misses even the story is really good
This movie is a complete surprise. I don't think anyone was expecting anything (I'm in that camp), and it blew away all expectations. I never cared about Lego too much either.
When I first saw this, I could not pay attention to the plot. As a LEGO collector, I was starring at the art. Like, the ocean. It’s ALL Legos. And when Emmet makes his set in the end, it shows the piece’s cereal number
It's all CGI animation, but made in a style to look like stop motion. The reason is looks so real is because they paid special attention to getting the surface imperfections and smudges correct, like including fingerprints and stuff. Another big reason is because it was the first movie to use ACES (Academy Color Encoding system) which very accurately calculates color and dynamic range. More info here ruclips.net/video/D7Cv7x6jjYQ/видео.html
You mentioned about the animation looking stop motion like. Well that was the idea, to do it in CGI but to build everything from actual LEGO pieces. All those numbers you see by the parts are the actual part numbers LEGO uses.
"Let's make a movie showing that following instructions is bad and you should think outside of the box!" "Can we crank out a bunch of Lego sets designed to be put together the way the instructions tell you?" "Darn right we can!"
This reaction made me actually tear up... Wonderful times! And I realized I've only seen the Finnish dub with my kids, never the original. I need a rewatch.
He also saw years of existential dread and trauma/abuse from mostly everyone (everyone except Vitruvius and Benny) in the movie having nothing to do with him, at least that is the way I see it looking back on it.
Should I watch Lego Movie 2 as well? 🤔
I do recommend it. It's not quite as good, but it deserved way better treatment than it got. At the very least, it has an amazing soundtrack.

Apart from the end credits, title cards, and a few videos in the background, the entire movie is CGI animation made to be as similar to real lego stop motion as possible. I absolutely love the style and it hasn't aged a day since the movie's released
The best Lego animated movie ever, love the reactions so funny. Also your face when Metalbeard is singing is priceless I love it
I was born in the late 60s, and grew up with Lego, but not the modern version where everything is based on something or is part of a set.
You will love Lego Batman. Also saw a suggestion below for the Iron Giant, also an awesome movie.
thank you for this. your reaction to Batman's song that he wrote was priceless.
"This feels like it'd be in some kid's room"
Dude, that's what my room looked like for all my childhood and most of my teens XD
I think I still have like 5-6 boxes full of legos back home :D
Although this was CGI, I believe the creators did have to build everything to make sure it could be done with LEGO
As awesome as the whole movie is, Benny's sheer joy when he finally gets to build a spaceship is the absolute highlight of this. Just so happy! XD
"SPACESHIP!"
6:43 "Darn, darn, darn, darny-darn!"
😳 Well _cheese and fries,_ Liam. Are you tryin' to go to _heck?_
the casting in this and the writing and everything is just so good
Basically this is a movie abt cosmic horror (like call of Cthulhu type shit)
Emmet sees another world by interacting with a mysterious artifact. President Business collects these artifacts and uses them to do unspeakable and impossible things like erasing someone’s frickin face or permanently cutting off their head.
Emmet finally gets a hazy glimpse of the other world and returns with impossible knowledge and terrifying comprehension
You Must Know That Morgan Freeman Did Narration For Metro Boomin's "Heroes and Villians" and "Savage Mode 2"
7:30 "A bunch of others we don't need to mention..."
I respectfully disagree... those lego sets and different universes were a great childhood for me. 🤣❤🤣❤🤣
Unikitty is also mt favourite! Im gonna subscribe after this!
@VKunia a lot of the yellow LEGO heads are made with two different faces on them(front and back) and the good cop/bad cop is quite a funny representation of that 🙂
Your movie reactions never disappoint, keep doing what your doing.
Oh yeah... this movie is awesome.
Morgan Freeman's "write all that down" line was not in the script. Freeman said that after being confused by frequent changes to the script, and it was added as a joke.
11:58 if you look closely in the back the pigs explode into sausages when they hit the ground. So many background jokes and details in this movie!
The part where Morgan Freeman mispronounced Dumbledore, was actually in studio...was tired of the retakes so the kept in the whole Audio of him getting frustrated 😂
For WW2 stuffs, I know people suggested The Pacific a lot after Band of Brothers but since its a Series, for movies i would suggest Flags of our Fathers and especially the 2nd one Letters From Iwo Jima.
thank you for reminding me of this movie, I had a smile on my face the entire time watching your reaction! this was truly a great movie
It's all CG but ridiculously good CG. Detail down to the molding marks in the plastic.
8:23 - President Business's cape is Will Farrell's tie in Lego form.
12:44 "I think I just found my favorite character."
Well, you know, there's _also_ a movie called _The Lego Batman Movie,_ which came out three years _after_ this one.
Will Arnett (Batman/Bruce Wayne), Elizabeth Banks (Wyldstyle/Lucy), Allison Brie (Unikitty), Anthony Daniels (C-3PO), Charlie Day (Benny), Keith Ferguson (Han Solo), Will Ferrell (Lord Business/President Business/The Man Upstairs), Will Forte (Abraham Lincoln), Morgan Freeman (Vitruvius), Todd Hansen (Gandalf), Jonah Hill (Green Lantern), Kelly Lafferty (Lord Business’ Assistant), Graham Miller (Duplo), Liam Neeson (Bad Cop/Good Cop/Pa Cop), Shaquille O’Neal (Shaq), Nick Offerman (Metal Beard), Chris Pratt (Emmet Brickowski), Cobie Smulders (Wonder Woman), Melissa Sturm (Gail/Ma Cop), Jorma Taccone (Shakespeare), Channing Tatum (Superman), Billy Dee Williams (Lando), & Leiki Veskimets (Computer)
3:59 "is this Terraria?"
She knows what Terraria is? IMMEDIATE SUBSCRIBE FROM ME!
(Terraria is my FAVOURITE game!!)
This movie had me and my wife laughing out loud when we watched it. That doesn't happen often. Great movie. Spaceship!!
SPACESHIP!!!
Will Arnett hosts a reality show where people compete building Legos. It's a lot of fun.
Love this movie! Can’t wait to see your reaction =)
16:35 average ocean gate moment 💀💀💀💀
Oh man you got me with the LEGO Racers theme joke 😂😂😂😂that's a throwback for sure
I remember playing with Lego in the 2000s. Mostly the Bionicle sets! I still collect Lego sets to this day since 2003
Who doesn’t like a movie about a story about a “nobody who saves everybody”? Its one of the great underdog stories!
it is such a genius movie
they really got creative the possibilities with lego
everything you see is made out of lego pieces
funny visual comedy that IMO never misses
even the story is really good
Space LEGO sets from the late 1970s and early 1980s were the best!

The end credits were stop motion. Everything else was CGI.
"Come with me if you want to not die" is a reference to Terminator, which stars Chris Pratt's father-in-law. Just a fun FYI.
You mentioned about the animation looking stop motion like. Well that was the idea, to do it in CGI but to build everything from actual LEGO pieces.
All those numbers you see by the parts are the actual part numbers LEGO uses.
"Let's make a movie showing that following instructions is bad and you should think outside of the box!"
"Can we crank out a bunch of Lego sets designed to be put together the way the instructions tell you?"
"Darn right we can!"
Everything is awesome ... especially your reactions! Another great reaction, great job.
The Lego Movie looks stop-motion because the crew intended on having the animation look that way. However, it all done via CGI by Animal Logic.
One thing I like about the Lego movie franchise is teaching values of family just like my little pony friendship is magic
This is my favorite animated movie ever
"Batman is the worst person I've ever met" in this context is one of the funniest lines I've ever heard.
19:09 "Never place your rear end on a pirate's face."
🤔 What a curiously specific rule.
This reaction made me actually tear up... Wonderful times! And I realized I've only seen the Finnish dub with my kids, never the original. I need a rewatch.
A very cool thing is when Emmett "sees" everything he saw the IRL part numbers of the Lego pieces.
He also saw years of existential dread and trauma/abuse from mostly everyone (everyone except Vitruvius and Benny) in the movie having nothing to do with him, at least that is the way I see it looking back on it.
The movie was all animated and made to look like it was stop motion. They used a low frame rate to give it that look.
The submarine exploding sent chills down my spine .
"I needed something light-hearted"
