Two fabulous tenors, surely among the greatest of recorded history. Don't seem to be any of similar vocal and emotional quality these days...at least not to my knowledge. Would love to discover any????
It is very difficult to compare this way, there are so many factors involved: Mike placement, theater size and acoustics, quality of recording equipment, etc. Needless to say it would be GREAT!! to have these two performing today. So we agree?
I prefer Del Monaco! (But i love also Corelli). Both great, but in this video Mario Del Monaco sounds like a bariton, his voice is so deep and marvellous.

Anche Corelli è un lirico spinto, con una voce un poco meno estesa, ma più duttile che gli rende di più in qualche passaggio. Io amo di più Del Monaco, per tanti motivi, di conoscenza, di estensione, di tecnica e di emotività. Questo non vuol dire che un altro non debba preferire Corelli per i motivi suoi.

No voice to me is as thrilling as Del Monaco's mountain rocketing voice, god it's epic, earth shattering, dramatic, passionate. I get many praise Corelli more and hail him as the greatest, his color and technique, but for me he doesn't shake my core as Mario, I can't imagine what it must've been like to be at the same venue as him

I would say both have impressive vocal techniques; Corelli clearly can make a bigger sound to make all the drama Del Monaco it's making but Corelli probably knew more drama was not necessary for this song of love, he sings with love and passion Del Monaco sings this and everything else to show what he could do with his voice.
One thing is for certain we will never hear voices like these again. The voices of the current opera singers can't even be remotely compared to these legendary Italian tenors. Their power,their piercing resonance and timbre just give me chills. Greazie mille for sharing this.

C. e MDM, ormai, da sempre, il mio preferito è, in assoluto Franco Corelli. Tutti e due dovevano gestire e domare un'enormità di voce e, Franco, con lo studio e la tecnica ci è riuscito come nessun altro tra i tenori. Both are fantastic. But hearing them side by side like this, I was surprised that in my opinion, I actually preferred Del Monaco. His voice seemed a bit more consistent throughout his range, whereas Correlli's high seemed a bit more pushed.
Hm. I hear Corelli's top note here more freely than Monaco's. Del Monaco's sounds more flattened. And there's a few comments here where people heard the same.

MDM was the real Melocchi student, Corelli took a few lesson with him they say, but he adapted the lowered larynx realizing the danger of inflexibility, and inability to sing softy that became MDM's fate

It's like when Corelli goes into his high notes his throat goes into a more neutral position and more open and then the notes flow so much smoother when Delmonico goes up it's almost like something's being clenched or squeezed in his vowel becomes more of an e and Corelli is more of an ah and it flows very freely. Corelli also seems to have a very calm unstruggled facial expression anytime he sings.
I agree. MDM uses a dipthong vowel sound to push the voice forward in the face, whereas Corelli's voice is perfectly placed and completely open, with such a wholesome rounded sound. Franco Corelli's technique is wonderful and there is nothing like the pushing going on that there is in MDM's performance; it is a Neapolitan Folk song, not Otello's Act 1 Esultate! However, I do not wish to denigrate MDM, he posses an extraordinary instrument the like of which we would love to hear again today.
Del Monaco used a lot of physical strength when he sang, but did not squeeze. MDM's voice was actually larger than Corelli's, but both voices could fill any opera house.

The differences in the recording is not fair to Corelli, so Del Monaco sounds much better. But if they both were recorded with the same equipment and acoustic then it would be fair. However I still believe this aria suits Del Monaco better, and Corelli in other arias.

Ho avuto la fortuna di ascoltarli entrambi dal vivo, due voci eccezionali che davano emozioni profondissime, impossibile per me esprimere, nello specifico, una preferenza. Se posso allargare il discorso, dico però che l'interpretazione di questa aria che mi emoziona maggiormente è quella di Caruso.
Love this type of video, so thank you! With two opera singers at this level of skill you can go into an analysis of what each does better than the other etc. but it really comes down to one's individual preference, doesn't it? What do we each value in a particular song or passage and who gives us that value? How one responds viscerally to the sound is also individual. The huge, rich sound of Del Monaco does it for me, if it comes down to sound alone. But Corelli may have been the one who showed the greatest vocal versatility.

I prefer Corelli for his emotional and melancholic interpretation and his more freedom at top, however MDM is still great because of the fierceness and sheer power in his thrilling voice, in general I also prefer Corelli to MDM because he has the better and more beautiful voice but MDM’s technic and his squillo in puccini and late verdi are stunning too
The ecoustics are different. Corelli is singing in a television studio, Del Monaco in a theater. Both were incredible, but my heart belongs to Corelli.

Monaco for sure. Bigger voice, bigger squillo, better chiaroscuro,better control and endless breath. I like Corelli as well, but Monaco is one of the best with Caruso and Gigli.
I think Monaco pushes and is more effortful. Corelli sounds more spinto here. Monaco has a darker wider sound here. The acoustics are different also. I get very uncomfortable when singers give everything or more than what they have. You sound always sound like you have more in reserve .

I adored Corelli as a youth ... he was my entry into the world of opera. I still adored him. Back then when I heard Del Monaco recordings I found the voice to sound constricted and wrote him off. It was not until I heard live recordings of MDM on Stefan Zucker’s, Opera Fanatic Show in the 80’s that I was blown away . MDM has an elemental passion about singing that really deeply touches my heart. They are 2 arteries nourishing ones heart with the mystery of the human voice.
This is like asking “do you prefer a Ferrari or Lamborghini?“

Corelli had better high notes, and better legato. He could sing high B flat pianissimo without changing voice to falsetto.

premesso che l'audio è a favore di del monaco, la pronuncia napoletana non è buona da entrambi .del monaco, ingrandendo i suoni sui medi snaturalizza quella che era la sua voce di natura brillante. ..... sono due grandissimi ma corelli aveva qualcosa in più nella voce .
CORELLI! Why? He rises powerful emotions in the audience and this is the first task of all singing. Please, don't do those comparisons more. It is clear that each artist has his own fans...
I prefer MDM, because he is more expretion in his voice and singing... but of course I adore FC too! Both Gifts from Heaven!❤❤❤
Ho avuto la fortuna di ascoltarli entrambi dal vivo, due voci eccezionali che davano emozioni profondissime, impossibile per me esprimere, nello specifico, una preferenza. Se posso allargare il discorso, dico però che l'interpretazione di questa aria che mi emoziona maggiormente è quella di Caruso.

Love this type of video, so thank you! With two opera singers at this level of skill you can go into an analysis of what each does better than the other etc. but it really comes down to one's individual preference, doesn't it? What do we each value in a particular song or passage and who gives us that value? How one responds viscerally to the sound is also individual. The huge, rich sound of Del Monaco does it for me, if it comes down to sound alone. But Corelli may have been the one who showed the greatest vocal versatility.
They're both equally beautiful, talented men. Can't decide.

I prefer Corelli for his emotional and melancholic interpretation and his more freedom at top, however MDM is still great because of the fierceness and sheer power in his thrilling voice, in general I also prefer Corelli to MDM because he has the better and more beautiful voice but MDM’s technic and his squillo in puccini and late verdi are stunning too

The ecoustics are different. Corelli is singing in a television studio, Del Monaco in a theater. Both were incredible, but my heart belongs to Corelli.
I prefer more the lyrical tenors...but if i have to make a choice...Corelli

La Divina Callas Corelli has a voice that was sweeter than MDM. MDM is very brassy! Both are amazing!
La differenza degli acuti tra Corelli e Del Monaco:il primo è più pungente perchè negli acuti la sua voce è più fine,con meno armonici...il secondo ha gli acuti pieni di armonici,quindi risulta più grande,ma ha meno punta...salve

Monaco for sure. Bigger voice, bigger squillo, better chiaroscuro,better control and endless breath. I like Corelli as well, but Monaco is one of the best with Caruso and Gigli.
I think Monaco pushes and is more effortful. Corelli sounds more spinto here. Monaco has a darker wider sound here. The acoustics are different also. I get very uncomfortable when singers give everything or more than what they have. You sound always sound like you have more in reserve .

Two different type of tensors; one who more or less "croons" & the other with a "loud voice." Of coarse you might disagree what I say but that how my "ears" sounds like. They are two GREAT tenors!
You could build a battleship with the amount of metal in del Monaco's voice. Truly astonishing.

А если серьёзно, то для того, чтобы сравнить голос двух певцов, нужно использовать запись с одной студии и одного года. Ещё, желательно, точно убедиться, что записывали на одну и ту же аппаратуру.
Поэтому данный ролик не даёт точного представления о мощности голосов этих вокалистов. Это, простите, мухлёж.
Del Monaco is such a great tenor, just can't stop listening to him. Corelli is amazing too, but Del Monaco takes the cake for me.

I adored Corelli as a youth ... he was my entry into the world of opera. I still adored him. Back then when I heard Del Monaco recordings I found the voice to sound constricted and wrote him off. It was not until I heard live recordings of MDM on Stefan Zucker’s, Opera Fanatic Show in the 80’s that I was blown away . MDM has an elemental passion about singing that really deeply touches my heart.
They are 2 arteries nourishing ones heart with the mystery of the human voice.
