Corner fireplaces should be against the law! It would be so much easier to place furniture in that room if it was between the two long windows on the side wall.

I too would move the couch/sectional forward in the room. I think as an alternative option to moving the TV, they could just replace the cubes with a thinner console table or shelf, mostly to hold the modem and other electronic stuff. If they keep the sectional and move it forward, it would feel cramped with the cubes (assuming the TV stays there instead of above the fireplace). Move the cubes behind the sofa for storage, hang art as mentioned. Bada-bing, bada-boom. An accent chair by the front door might also be a nice touch. Oooo, or a tufted bench. Great place to sit when taking off/putting on shoes. If the TV stays where it is, someone could still watch TV from there and feel the warmth of the fireplace when it's on.
The TV I'd place on the kitchen wall The L shaped sofas I would put one to face the kitchen wall and the other by the window or with it's back to the stairs I'd put a nice console behind the couch by the fire place to put some books Then put 2 arm chairs with a small round table by the fire place to make that corner more of a conversation / reading area. The little room under the stairs sounds like it could be a great area for the dog to sleep in.

I think it's a beautiful room to start with but would look like a designer show place with two couches pulled forward, bigger rug, tv over fireplace and I think the tall plant is a must. I would have suggested keeping the TV where it is and featuring it in a brand new media cabinet, a tall one with storage. Then add the two new sofas, placed as you recommend. I think the corner fireplace is charming! It keeps the room from looking boring and boxy. Yes, get a larger art piece for over it, or a large mirror, and place a cozy chair to the left of it. I would never allow a TV to be placed over a fireplace in my home. The very idea of watching TV with a fire going hurts my eyes. (Of course, I live in a small apartment and would sell my soul for a fireplace, no matter where it might be placed!)
I was thinking two couches (or one couch, two chairs) in an L shape too - but both angled around the fireplace essentially making a square. The bend of the L would be diagonally across from the fireplace/tv. That way it feels like you’re not walking directly into the seating area when you enter the house - the back of the first couch/chairs makes a walkway from the front door into the rest of the house . You could put a long narrow rectangular rug straight in from the front door (a matching runner up the stairs would tie the room into the rest of the house). This would give the dog toy area more weight - change that to a handsome console table with two lamps, one large centred picture above (tasteful black and white family photo in a nice big frame/colourful expressionist painting of greenery?), a bowl for keys on the table, and a new larger woven basket big enough to hold all of the dog’s toys on the floor to the right of that table - you see the toys in the new open top basket but they don’t spill out. I like your idea of a table on the back of the couch, I would add two side tables on the ends of my L shape, with a lamp on each for nighttime. Then if there’s room in the area created by moving the couches closer to the fireplace I’d add a simple shallow hotel-style flat-pack console desk on the far wall that’s opposite the front door, a lamp on the desk - a great place to put a laptop, pay bills, drop your mail, write Christmas cards, do some writing. Then put a nice big dog bed on the floor on the left of the desk in the corner below the window - this area would be a great place to put a Christmas tree during the holidays. I hate tv’s above the fire place. So I would move the sofa in a lighter color as you suggested closer to the fireplace as well, however I would do one sofa and 2 swivel chairs. I would put the tv with a shelving unit on the back wall that separates the living from the kitchen. That way they can swivel from the fire place to the TV. The shelves would be from floor to ceiling to make it look more architectural. If they could afford it I would get rid of the space under the stairs and move the stairs back and have about the first 3-4 steps of the stairs facing towards the living space instead of the front door. I think that would ground the space much better, and it could give it a small entry way.
Big improvement instantly moving everything in & sofa table behind couch. I would maybe place tall bookcases against that back wall and create a library view walking in. Or maybe near the stair wall using one smaller bookcase and one taller to mimic the stairs diagonal angles. love your content.
I agree... pulling the couches forward with a console either directly behind the couch or up against the back wall, surrounded with art and lighting was my first reaction. Also, I think the dark couches in that room are too heavy looking....I'd go with the lighter fabric you showed Lou. The TV looks better about the mantel as well. Very nice living room..

I would've put a long sofa inbetween the windows, and a long ottoman in front of the fire place, if the tv were to stay where it is. But, tbh, the tv shouldn't be there anyway because of the glare from the windows, because of the glare issue, the best place for the tv is above the fire place. I just love ottomans in front of fire places, so probably instead of a little coffee table i would probably put some sort of ottoman there with a big flat tray on it so it can still act like a table, but could be a seat or foot rest too. With the two sofas. I would clear the space between the front door and the door towards the kitchen to reduce the risk of trip-hazards with the furniture being moved closer to the door, i would just put a big mirror on the wall there or something. On the wall that the sofa is against currently i would put art, or a big bookshelf unit or something in light wood with some little vases with plants, flowers etc, and books, and art, and if there's space, maybe a little console at the back of the sofa, or, the long and low ottoman so you can sit and read the books off the bookcase.
Great design tip. I have no fireplace, but am thinking about installing one in the corner as well because the room is not deep enough to install a bulky fireplace in the middle of our room, so since our room is extra wide, I thought the best solution was to install the fire place in the corner and place the TV above it so that the long open wall has room for some art work.

I was thinking, in front of the window on the other side of the fireplace, a chair with a small nesting table and plant. Gives more seating and makes it flow better. I’m in the process of tearing out my corner fireplace! But yes, your suggestions were exactly what I would recommend. My window is one very large off-center window and I have an extra long sleek modern leather sectional that runs into my fireplace, so the fireplace must be the one to go haha!
I love your videos.... you have such great tips! I would have done everything you suggested.. bringing the furniture forward, bigger artwork, TV above the fireplace, bigger area rug. The only thing I would do differently is that area under the stairs... I would have put two small upholstered chairs(more seating especially for TV), a small table in the middle, and a basket 🧺 for the dogs toys. 😊
Looks good! I would put the dog toys on the back side of the console table to keep them out of flow of traffic. Trust me, they always find their toys! LOL

The new sofas and their layout look attractive. Placing a TV above the fireplace makes that area too dark when it is being unused. I would purchase a large and thin new TV console. It can hide the toys and create a more spacious living area.
We also have a corner fireplace. I love the idea of having two sofas in that room… But would you say that there is a minimum room size requirement for to say standard size sofas?

I just moved into my 1st apartment! It has the dreaded (but charming) corner fireplace dilemma and there's an oddly proportioned L shaped open plan living/dining area. I love this apartment but I was not expecting it to be this difficult to figure out where on earth I want to put the furniture in here before I buy a couch

How do I send in my layout. My tiny town home needs help. I have a dining/living/toy/tv room all in one. It also has a corner fireplace with a built in shelf. So the tv is already above it, but it is getting cramped because that is the only corner for the tv cable, and internet. So the shelf is cramped with tv/internet/modem/dvd player/Nintendo/remotes.
No balance in this room! Too stretched out, not cozy. I would consider using ceiling to floor draperies. I would go with a shelving unit (metal) and definitely art work on the wall behind the setting!

Omg, E have a caddy corner fireplace as well! What a pain in the neck it is too. When you walk into the front door, to your left is a small nook and stairs to go upstairs to bedrooms. To the right from front door is the living room where there is only one large window on the largest wall looking over the front porch. Look to your left and on the opposite wall is the fireplace, it backs up to the small kitchen divider wall. We do have the tv over the fireplace but with the stairs, front door and kitchen surrounding the living room we are very limited in setting up. If you want , I can send a video and pics to vive you a better idea of the layout. Plus the footprint from the living room to the kitchen and the rest of the main floor is just as non functional. Help!
I took mine out and my friends did the same! We are so much happier! I bought an ethanol fire box made of glass that I will place on a low shelf on the new wall (but not in the corner), with the TV next to it.

Your redo is ok - EXCEPT - putting the tv over the fireplace. Whoever started that trend should be shot at dawn!! It looks awful, puts the tv over a heat producing object and forces viewers to strain their necks looking up. Can't think of a more uncomfortable position.

This is great. For me, a tv over a fireplace is too high of a placement. Unless your space is huge and you can move your seating farther away.

Ring light shows up in your glasses... bounce light off the ceiling or use a defuser so it's not as harsh and weird looking.
