      I did enjoy the video, but in your commentary, you say you understand what they did, but are unsure about one or two details. Isn't that essentially the same thing Mr. Copperfield said? I'm sure he (or you) could replicate the trick using a different technique or method, but that isn't quite the same as knowing exactly how they did it and I do believe that is the criteria that Penn & Teller go by themselves.
      I'm not much of a magician myself, more of an 'amateur' card mechanic and a purist at that, no pockets, nothing up the sleeve, no props but my hands and a deck of cards, all deception done in plain sight. Call it a minor hobby; counting, calculating, manual command. Of course, when actually playing cards, I never cheat. I despise cheaters. Cheating takes the honor and sportsmanship out of gaming and I adore gaming and strategy. My favorite game is chess, a game which wholly embraces misdirection and trickery while keeping cheating strictly verboten. My second favorite game is poker. I therefore practice cheating in reverse, so I can catch the little buggers in the act!
      I study magic because I study everything. How systems work in particular, whether biological, digital, natural, mechanical, psychological, social, etc. (I was the kind of kid who took his radio apart just to see how it worked. I had my own tool set by the time I was 12 and was writing IF/THEN/GOTO games for myself a year later in BASICA on the PC. That was back in '84, back when I was under strict orders not to take the computer apart).
      Let's face it, magicians cheat just like movies do. They go through so much trouble to make us believe that the falsehoods we see and hear are actually real and true. I believe what separates magicians and movie studios from regular cheaters and makes it fair play is that the observer already knows they are there to be deceived or distracted or even transported. You might say there's a 'certain' level of trust involved.
      "Wanna see a magic trick?"
      "Yes, please, entertain us."
      Always stay true to your art, Jason, it's real kung fu. think of it as such.
      I hope this finds you well and I wish you all success.
      God bless...

      @@Napthalicious It's not good to combine gaming honor, which is about something else, and magic, which is really about deception, ergo magic is synonymous with deception - for fun. But even in magic there is a boundary that divides what is and what is not magic, for example Angel is not a magician, but a video-cheater who glorifies his supernatural abilities, evokes compassion by presenting a very stupid personal story, etc. This can mislead teenagers if they believe a deceiver who spreads the stigma of the occult from the trick study as true. For a specific video - if the point of the show is that Teller will receive his own prize, Teller will probably receive the prize ... A better judge than David Copperfield is not for Penn and Teller. Mr. Jason certainly knows exactly how the trick was done. I also know this because I saw the original record a year ago. David spoiled the laying of cards. He was not supposed to lay the tenth card, and because in addition to Teller, Penn (still turned away from the table) listened intently, he immediately warned David that if he laid his card, he had to take it, or look at a new one and not put it again ... On video David's decision record is missing. Whether to take a laid card or a new one. Penn, who still had his back to the table, urged David to decide. David took the tenth card back, which was already in the video, and the soundtrack was cut and shifted as if there had been no misunderstanding. Penn had to step in even though he had his back to the table so that Teller would have a clear number from the wiretap and Penn's repairs - 10 cards = 4 spades. It is not a problem. If you mean dishonest interference from TV, I agree. They do it in many cases, it's very criticized and it hurts this particular show ... Finding 4 spades after shuffling is not a problem. It takes a maximum of 1.5s. If you narrow down the selection to a few cards, it's 0.5s ... So it was hearing (not Penna's sight, he can't see across the table) and a quick selection of 4 spades when Teller had his back to the audience. The last part of the trick is not just about body language ...

      @@DL-kc8fc Funny, I was just thinking about all that. While gaming is honorable on its surface, gambling is not.
      Magic itself as a trade is also honorable, but the trickery involved is not. If we play chess and I use some form of fool's-mate you don't know, am I not tricking you? It remains magic until you figure it out.
      I think we are both on the same page, but using different words to describe a preferred method.
      If I can flip a coin and make it land heads 16 times, will you gamble on the 17th and call tails? I would place math, music and magic in the same category as I would gaming and gambling.
      It's all diversion...

    There was the french magician who did a card trick, and penn said: ''You did this at this moment'' the magician said ''no I didnt'' and then Penn admit that he was then fooled.
    The skateboard trick, Penn said that the trick went on a way with the lady. The lady said she didnt do any trick at this moment (it was her partner that did it), then Penn admitted he was fooled then.
    The Nut and Shells game, Penn was sure the nut was added when the cloth was used to break the shell, but he affirmed he did not, Penn then admitted to be fooled.
    These three example isnt to be mean or anything, but just to make a counter argument to the idea you brought '' Since only one thing was not known, he was fooled? Just to not embarrassed them maybe'' which it seems to be a false statement concidering how Penn and Teller usually react in their show. Since Copperfield didn't understood probably the main and core way the trick was done (which can be one detail, let us be frank here... magicians tries to fool other magician, devils are in the details of the details at this point) it still follows the spirit of the normal show.

      Yes, as was the case with the skate board trick, their "first guess" was plausible, (and obvious) but that wasn't how the trick was done. (Though it certainly COULD have been done that way). So they missed when he transferred the card and then just threw up their hands and said they were fooled. But were they really? What amazed me is that that Spanish guy "Jandro" ALWAYS fooled them and I thought every one of his tricks were pretty easy to figure out.

    • @littleratblue
      @littleratblue 5 лет назад +57

      I don't think so. I think that he thought that he knew how it was done but, in further discussion with Teller, realized that there was some vital component that he assumed was necessary that Teller told him wasn't a component of the act. He probably did figure it out soon after but, for that small moment, he was surprised.
      Though, it is also possible that he had to come to grips with the rules of the show on the spot. P&T get one shot to get it right and get everything that there is in that one guess. That's almost certainly an unrealistic standard for "fooling" if we were talking about the bunch of them together, in private, in a room in the Magic Castle. For the purposes of the show, though, a more practical standard of fooling would probably result in only one or two winners each season. The producers want one an episode, and thus this is the standard.
      While it is possible that the hesitation before giving them the win is that second issue - Copperfield wrapping his brain around the rules that P&T have to follow - I feel like Teller would want to have the opportunity to genuinely fool David Copperfield and would have come up with some technique that would stump the guy for a little bit once he knew what they *didn't* do. And, of course, Copperfield isn't the only judge. The judges behind the curtains know what P&T did and they know what Copperfield thinks they did. They wouldn't get the trophy unless the hidden judges agreed that they'd pulled the wool over Copperfield's eyes in some way.
      I think they fooled him and did something special.

    I'm quite sure that this trick was skillfully performed and much harder than it looked. But my biggest problem with this performance is strictly related to personal preference. I find the "pick a card--any card" genre of magic terminally boring. There is no drama, no suspense, no surprise. We all know what is going to happen. Audience member picks a card. Card is "lost." Card is "found" by magician. I was hoping for some kind of surprise kicker at the end. Something that made if feel like magic. I don't mean to disparage two obviously great magicians and performers, but this particular trick didn't make me want to go out and buy Penn & Teller tickets.

    Penn sometimes says that they can figure out some parts of a performer's trick, but if they can't figure out the most important part, then they will give them a win. Like with Sean Farquad's first performance. MrFastXX As I understand, it is initially up to Penn and Teller and the magician to agree, which they usually do because they (both Penn and Teller as well as most of the magicians) aren’t there so much to be competitive as to put on an entertaining show.
      And only if they don’t come to an agreement do they go to the judge. And even if the agreement is wrong, the judge doesn’t intervene in an agreed decision. There are multiple cases of comments after the fact (from both sides) saying that a decision was wrong with both the magician conceding when they shouldn’t have and Penn and Teller conceding when they probably had enough.

      @@88porpoise I remember a magician, back from the second season, who got naked behind some screens. He said that in taping the show, they gave their explanation, and they got some key parts of his trick, he got nervous, and agreed that he was busted. After he exited the scenario, and started to get dressed, he was asked to come back and re-record the ending, and they started with the same explanation, but then they conceded a FU trophy. That was because there was a key element of the trick that they got wrong, and the magician did not realize that, but the producer-magician-judge who is behind the scenes and who knows the entirety of the trick, tipped P&T that they were wrong, so they came up with the re-recording idea to screw the participant.

      But there have been instances were Penn and Teller said they learned after the fact that they had been fooled by someone who conceded to them. And instances where competitors said they shouldn't have won but they did due to miscommunication.
      Really the big thing here is it isn't some cutthroat competition The very act of being on the show is far more significant for most of these people than winning. I am sure they want to win (well most of them, some clearly go on with no intention of fooling anyone) and it is valuable to them but it isn't nearly as important as putting on a good show on stage.

    Then the 10% 90% thing by Eric Mead is a real thing.
    That if a magician shows somebody a trick and 90% of that trick fools them but there's a little 10% sliver that does not fool them, the Average person will say that the Trick did not fool them even though they can't explain 90% of it. Contrary wise, if that same magician shows that same trick to his fellow conjurers, it only takes 10% sliver for them to admit that they were fooled :)

So if he doesn’t know 10%, it bugs him and he can concede, he’s fooled. A non-magician if he even feels like he saw a sneaky move, will feel like he hasn’t really been fooled, despite not knowing any method really.

    That was a very simple trick and David got it almost right. What he meant when he said that they are two and he is one is that Penn was doing the distracting chatter and Teller was using a small mirror in his hand to know the card order in the deck since the deck was in an order that P&T knew with a “key”. Then Teller got the same card from a stack when he had his back to Penn. Even if penn and teller did it in a slightly different way, this is what it is all about and it’s kind of pathetic that they would choose such an easy card trick? It was not mind-blowing like it should be. Kinda made me lose some respect for them. If you agree please like his comment.

  • @stanRmeyer
    @stanRmeyer 5 лет назад +1

    Since there was no shuffling before the card selection... Teller could have memorized the cards in order that he had given to David Copperfield... With tellers back turned and Keen hearing teller counted the "click of cards" that David Copperfield dealt off the hand... At that point teller knew exactly which card David had selected... Did not matter how many shuffles David Copperfield did teller had the deck in his hand and when he turned around so David could reach his hand in his pocket and pull out the brass knuckles teller, so we could not see him, quickly spread open the deck found the card that he knew was David's card and either put it in the top or the bottom of the deck... Placing the deck in his pocket teller simply dealt from whichever side of the deck was not the selected card... When he had counted out the number of cards he then pulled the "selected card" out from the other side of the deck and placed it turned up!... The three keys the dissolution was knowing the order of the cards in the beginning and Counting the clicks with a good ear.... Using Penn and the brass knuckles as a "diversion" so teller could turn away from View with one hand open up the cards select a card and then relocate the card in either the top or bottom of the deck... No shuffles were made after teller had turned around and located the card... begin to shuffle from his pocket!

  • @tchevrier

    I don't know how the trick was done but a couple of things I did notice that I think are critical to the trick.
    1. He didn't get to shuffle the cards beforehand so that makes me think the order of the deck is somehow key to the trick. Maybe he had the deck memorized and was just counting the sound as DC selected his card.
    2. Since they didn't shuffle the deck, that makes me think that the shuffling was not important. i.e., they knew the card at that point and it didn't matter where it was in the deck.
    2. We don't actually get to see that it is a normal deck. We see a few of the cards but not the whole deck.
    3. Like you said, the deck is out of view for a long period of time. He's obviously using that time to find the card.

    I think David was just being nice. This trick doesn't seem complicated at all.
    Teller knew the card due to stacking, as David already mentioned. Then he could shuffle until the cows come home because Teller could have easily switched decks during the brass knuckles misdirection, to a deck in regular order where he could have quickly found the right card and move it to the top or bottom. Then he could've extracted 11 cards from random locations in the deck and the 12th card from top or bottom. Why 12? That's how many it takes to spell "four of spades". Now exactly how the switch was done or how Teller could've quickly found the 4 of Spades in the shuffled deck may be the reason why David felt he was fooled. But I think it's just mechanics at that point and the principle is what matters.

    Finding one of 52 cards in a short time could be tricky. Instead, you can divide them into groups where each group has all cards guaranteed to have a different number of letters in spelling. Each group might have a different pattern on top. Now Teller just needs to see it before shuffling and switch to the deck where cards from the group are already in the right positions.

    Was thinking about this today. One thing that P&T like more than automatic principles is classic gaffs. I think this whole thing operates on a simple short key that Teller deals to the top in the demonstration. Copperfield automatically places it during the deal count and replacement of the cards. The key remains with the selection through the shuffling because it is a short (they need him to riffle shuffle and cuts don't ruin keys). Teller cuts it to top as he is turned, peeks, then deals from bottom until the reveal... something like that. No stack needed. This approach would be right in their wheelhouse.

    Code: magic, like in life, it's impt to have ORDER.
    2. There was some sort of marking done when David selected the card or they were listening to determine which card was chosen
    3. Shuffled and cut the deck
    4. Teller SWITCHED the deck, they have another deck with the exact order as the orginal deck before it was shuffled.
    5. Teller already knew the order of the deck, so he knew where the 4 of spades

      But they've said there's only one deck. There was no switch. David even checked it.
      I think Teller could tell which card was selected just by counting the cards as David was putting them on the table, because they're in order. Then while he had his back turned he simply found the 4 of spades in the deck and put it on top, or some other easily recognizeable spot, then simply pulled it out at the right moment.

      Thanks! :) Yeah actually what I was saying is that he knew the order of the cards. So when the other cards were placed on top, he could read that marked card on top... and use it to deduce which card Copperfield had ACTUALLY stopped at. So from that point on he knew which card it was. And I think when he turned his back he then ADDED another card, which was duplicate of the card DC had ended up selecting...

  • @rtonce
    @rtonce 5 лет назад +3

    Simpler than that...The deck was never inspected, nor did David look at any cards other than the one he picked. He also replaced the card not into the deck, but on top of the counted cards, so it was replaced to the top of the deck. Since this detail did not mess up Penn and Teller's trick, the whole deck must have been 4 of spades obviously. Everything else was just distraction, in other words faking Dave out, because if you assume something was done, and it is only one part, and other parts do not follow, then you are lost without having figured out the solution. The best tricks are ones that are simple and foolproof...in this case with obvious and suspicious misdirection. Oh, and when watching a magic trick, think of it as viewing a silent movie, keeping your eyes quick, yet ignoring whatever the magician blah blahs on about or claims. BTW, David was trying to be a bit playful by replacing that card on the wrong pile first at least, and that his card was found any way, he knew at least by then also how the trick was done. It got him a television appearance and the rest is all showmanship.

    There is no key card. That's the reason Copperfield had to admit he was fooled. Teller counted the unshuffled dealt cards by sound. Knowing the order of his stack, Teller learned the identity of the selected card as Copperfield was choosing it. The shuffles were irrelevant. When Teller turns his back he just controls the 4 of spades so it can be produced at the right moment. Tada!

    So, first guess without going back to rewatch: Deck is pre-arranged to look random, but the order is memorized. They listen for the sounds to know what card he's got. During the brass knuckle distraction, somehow Teller either grabs a copy of the card or forces the card to the top or bottom (my first instinct is a copy but David looked at the deck to see so I assume he checked for a duplicate and it seems against the spirit of the show for them to have removed the duplicate if that were the case). Puts the deck in his pocket, and with that, he can pull out the card at any particular point by just drawing from the opposite side until it's needed.
    Granted, it's P&T, so I'm betting a majority of these obvious ways are intentional misdirection.

    • @88porpoise
      @88porpoise 4 года назад +1

      The problem with listening is, whether deliberate or not, David Copperfield did not follow instructions. He was supposed to count cards onto the table and then take one of the top of the deck. He counted cards onto the table and took his card from the table.
      I would guess that the key is the cards are replaced in the opposite order as the original deck with the top card of the deck being positioned directly above David’s card while the card that immediately preceded it is at the top of the deck.
      There are three potential ways I (not a magician in any sense) can see of identifying the card:
      1) The face of the top card of the deck is just sticky enough that it and David’s card don’t separate through the riffle shuffles or the cut. But this wouldn’t need a stacked deck and likely could be noticed by David when he is counting it off.
      2) Some sort of mark on the back of the cards so they can read what card is on the top of the deck before David shuffles and know what card was under it originally.
      3) Somehow (I don’t have the foggiest idea how it would be possible) there is a degree of order maintained through the shuffles and cut so that they can figure out which cards are in reverse order to know which was David’s. I suspect this is it as the discussion seemed to be what David was this while Penn wanted him to say how they kept the order through the shuffles and cut
      The rest is pretty straightforward.

    • @caliithildae8500
      @caliithildae8500 3 года назад +1

      @@88porpoise Just to help you out with 3, a riffle shuffle doesn't really change the order that much, all it does is put cards between the card order. So let's say I have the top 11 cards memorized, you then pick one of the top 10 cards through instruction and place it say on top of the deck and the other 9 on top. Then I tell you to riffle shuffle it as much as you want. No matter how many times you riffle shuffle all I have to do is quickly look through and find what was the 11th card then look for the next card that was part of the other 10 and that's the card, no matter how many cards are between it. He was instructed to do 1, so it doesn't mess with the order much, so Teller would just need to determine where the order changed in say the memorizing of the top 15 or 20 cards and then he knows the identity.

    My take on this:
    - there are two identical sets of cards
    - P&T count the time DC counted by hearing the sound of card being placed on the table while looking the other way.
    - brass knuckle diversion gave chance for the change of the set of cards (hidden from camera for quite a while)
    - the rest is just how to take the card out of the pocket (front or back side) to be able to end up to the same exact number of times DC counted

    IMO it was a lame card trick. I agree about DC's Grandpa's Aces although his shuffle was disgraceful! They should have done a trick with a copy of David Copperfield by Charles Dickens! The trophy should have been FM (Fooled Me). BTW I saw DC live in Miami...he was walking down the road in front of me. I tried to catch up with him and ask for his autograph, but just before I was able to approach him he went round a corner and turned into a chemist! 420!

    I think you do a great job of respecting the boundaries of revealing methods and principles while giving enough of a tip for beginners - like P&T. Well done with dropping Madison's work as a reference for those who didn't know - just enough for those who care and obscure enough for those who don't to enjoy your channel.
    I think if P&T were hinting at the 10% it takes to fool a magician, they might have referenced the back of a book or maybe recipe cards like grandma used to have.

    I guess this could have been done by using a stacked deck as follows:
    a) The deck is not shuffled before Copperfields choice, so knowing statistically that he wouldn't think of a number greater than 26 (or less), they could have placed (randomly, not stacked) on the upper half of the deck cards that can bee uniquely spelled-counted to (lets say A-C-E O-F (!!!) S-P-A-D-E-S = 11).
    b) Copperfield then shuffles and cuts etc, but that doesn't change the fact that he has already picked a card from the set of cards that penn and teller had placed on top of the deck. So until this point, penn and teller do not know which card he has chosen.
    c) While david is checking tellers pocket, he can do a deck switch, OR place on the top of the deck a stacked packet of cards in a specific order to which you can uniquely spell-count to, and this stacked packet contains all the cards that david could have picked (those that where on the upper half of the starting deck)
    d) Then you just spell down your card and BOOM

    Two possibilities:
    1: The cards are marked, he sees the last (key) card before the chosen on top when he turns arround, knows the stack, therefore knows the card. When he turns arround he finds the card quicly (and puts it in the right place. It isnt hard, while David mixed the deck Teller counts the letters of cards so he knows the number before even taking the deck. Turning arround he searches the card and in the same process takes a break on the right number and puts the card in. Or just cuts the card to the top/bottom and takes cards one by one from the other side, even easier.
    2: The deck has stack so first 15 cards are the cards that have the right amount of letters in the "name". The other deck is stacked so the cards are in the positions.
    If I had to guess Id go with the number two, just because its harder to guess.

    I share your opinion 100%.
    This a standard trick, and the performance was disappointing...
    The answers to the trick's secret can be found by reading classic books written by vintage cardicians: Jordan and Fulves come to my mind.
    Needless to say, the moment Teller turned his back, something suspicious happened....
    "Pick a card and I will tell you what card you picked" An old and and boring magic principle which has been performed ad nauseam. It is supposed that this duo is a paragon of creativity...couldn't they come up with a cleverer trick?? What a fiasco!!
    I do believe David did know how the trick was done, but he didn't want to debate further...after all, it is show business.
    By the way: I do love card tricks, but that doesn't stop me from identifying a mediocre trick and performance.

    2:30 Interesting. What Penn asked him to do was to put his selected card back and put the other cards on top. What he actually did is put his little pile back on top of the main deck. Yet P&T still ended up getting the card right, which seems to rule out certain methods they could have used?

    • @SC-gs8dc
      @SC-gs8dc 4 года назад

      That's probably the signal identifying the card. All the cards before the selected card are in reversed order relative to the rest of the deck -- so the card immediately before the selected card will be on the top of the deck prior to the two shuffles. Two shuffles wouldn't substantially change the order so that alone could identify the card; in addition Teller could probably tell approximately where in the deck it was by closely watching the shuffles and cut. Would take having the cards in a memorized sequence.

    I do not know what to say, because I have seen every episode except the current one, and they did declare a couple of times that they were not fooled because they knew most of the trick, in addition they sometimes make two different tries on how they did it and David had basically one. I say they did not do that well, plus they paid him to be there maybe he was taking it lightly? David is a wizard with card trick, back in the day he did some good tricks with cards on the stage besides levitating and teleporting people and stuff. I got the vibe of advertisement watching it, maybe I am wrong, but it bugs me that they were not as smooth as they use to. maybe it was a red herring (the huge turn, camera focus and the knuckles), so he things of a deck switch. Here is the thing, I thing in the misdirection Teller peeked a card that opens the "door" which is a key importance and maybe he cut it and gave it to David to put into his pocket. Something like that, but maybe I should watch it again, so hate cameras :P
