    I think the difference between Adam West and Wild West is that the original Mayor West wasn't used very often, except for one-off jokes. Conversely, Wild West tends to take center stage every time he appears, he's very rarely just a one-off. He's fine when he is a one-off (in that episode where Peter turned Carter's house into a hotel, Wild had a joke where all his cowboy gear was identical to Bruce's gay stuff, which I found pretty funny), but he's rarely used that way.

    • @mightyfilm
      @mightyfilm 10 месяцев назад +22

      Yes! Yes to all of that. It's not so much Wild West is a bad character so much as he's used poorly. His introductory episode should have been his ONLY spotlight episode and he should have been used as a cowboy stuff in decidedly not cowboy situations running gag at most. Adam West was basically Ralph Wiggum on steroids and bath salts, and when he did something crazy, it always landed. I'm glad they didn't try and replicate that or just recast him with a sound-a-like, but they went too far in the opposite direction with this one.

      It isn't actually that, he has never really been a "comedic" character. Barnyard is a hilarious movie, but Ben was the least funniest character and his death was the most emotional part of the movie. Them trying to turn someone with Sam's bedtime story voice into a "comedic" character just doesn't work. He works much better for emotional and action type work.
      The only movie I have seen where Sam's character was actually funny for being what it was was when he narrated in 'A Million Ways to Die in the West.' THAT worked perfectly and that is the only real way you can make that kind of voice comedic.

    Truth be told, I was paying too much attention to the Stewie vs. Bruce Antiquing B-plot to care about Wild West or Tom Selleck. I do think that the guy dumping trash near Bruce's booth felt like too ridiculous of a Deus Ex Machina, just at as ridiculous as that pLace episode where Brian and Frank, Jr.'s new club promptly folds just because Andy Dick walks in, but that and whole Chris's narration while being locked in the car thing were arguably the most creative gags in the episode.
    As for the Reverse Mortgage commercials, you might get surprised to know that Henry Winkler was doing them before Tom Selleck. Yeah. Now that would have been funnier: have Peter get the reverse mortgage because of his long established love of "The Fonz." Surely, he wouldn't steer him wr...wr...rr...😜🤪🙃

      The Andy Dick joke makes sense if you Know the lore behind Andy Dick, to condense a hell of alot, he would show up at parties and proceed to be a unhinged lunatic ruining the experience for others to the point it became well know in hollywood circles that when Andy Dick shows up the party is basically over, I agree with you about "The Fonz" being the one to convince Peter being a MUCH better idea, unfortunately the current writers would need to have respect for the characters/worldbuilding and they've clearly show to have given up on that.

    I feel like the creators of Family Guy watched an episode of Fairly Odd Parents that features Doug Dimmadome, and thought “Hey, we should make Quohog’s new mayor a cowboy like him!” Unfortunately, they failed to make Wild West as interesting or even likable as Dimmadome.

    I was with this episode right up until act 2. It sounded like a classic pre-cancellation era Family Guy pop culture obsessed set up. Peter mindlessly believing what Magnum PI says, screwing the family as a result, and then wanting revenge on Selleck. Problem is, in an older episode, the third act would have been entirely Peter and Tom going at it, Chicken Fight style. Hell, if it was even a mid-season post renewal episode, at least we'd have Brian tearing down the Reverse Mortgages scam for what it was. I agree, Wild West (should be called Mild West) ruined the episode with his painfully unfunny, kindly grandpa schtick, and they seem they actually tried to get the real Tom Selleck because they treated him with kid gloves. Plus, I'm glad I saw an international take on this episode, since these commercials ARE relentless (though usually delegated to daytime programming seniors watch), but the joke stops dead at "this is a US reference only." Worst yet, the commercial was the best joke in the episode, and the entire episode hinges on the reliance that you get the reference. Plus, I'm getting tired of the bad observational humor. I know we shocked the audience to death so they're completely desensitized to shock humor, but it feels like the ENTIRE show is starting to show its age. Like it KNOWS the Gen-Xer's who watched this show back in 1999 are getting older and starting to basically say "You're all in your 50's, now. Enjoy the old people comedy."
    Oh, and the less said about the B plot the better. If anything was more dull than Cowboy Grandpa, it was this low stakes, "you have to be in the places we've been and know the people we knew" type humor that turned me off. It's like they threw that child molester/sex offender joke in at the last moment to say "hey! We're still edgy! We're not staring at the abyss that is 60. We can shock you still, right?"

    I'm wondering if the problem is with Family Guy is the Cutaway gags when I was watching season 21 compared to the older seasons the show definitely feels empty without the Cutaway gags. There are some still here and there but they've been just cutting to random people instead of making funny skits like the Kool-Aid guy or the Jetsons or The Flintstones

    • @SamanthaJonesSATC
      @SamanthaJonesSATC 10 месяцев назад

      Those cutaways gradually became repetitive and those pop culture references are one of many examples of the show rehashing a lot of their schtick.

    But wait, Lois once said “Daddy pays our mortgage” so how the hell could Peter have gotten the ‘Reverse Mortgage’ in the first place? (I know Family Guy rarely keeps to its own continuity but it’s been mentioned several times) also I get the New Mayor Moustache hate, but I think writing a new zany character to replace Mayor West would have felt disrespectful to the character and Adam West himself (R.I.P) 😞😞😞
    Also I love Tom Selleck, actually watch him in Blue Bloods all the time, but had no clue he did commercials, you taught my brain new stuff!

So many of Family Guy viewers stream, and if you watch it on network TV, Family Guy is aired at night if you're watching it live, while most commercials aimed at the elderly are aired during daytime tv.

    I think the idea of making it on the commercial wasn't a "bad" idea because they do sometimes come on but it's either late at night or on those channels with Medicare, odd products, or health insurance ads. In short, it hardly comes on the main channels so it was a stupid idea, if it had been done better it would have been ok.
