Tamron from 2012 (VC) is sharper then this lens @ 200 mm and F2.8. 200 mm focal length and aperture F2.8 is the most popular/important settings for 70-200 wideaperture lenses. Plus Tamron is lighter - only 1275 g without tripod collar (easily detachable). 11 years haven't changed much.
You're saying the Tamron 70-200 2.8 VC USD G2 is sharper at 200mm F2.8? I find that hard to believe. Which test chart are you looking at for comparison and was the old Tamron tested on a 42 MP camera? As that will make a difference, especially if what you're using for comparison is a test done on a lower MP camera for the Tamron G2. You're right about the weight though, it's a bit disappointing that Sigma couldn't get closer to 1kg, that said 1.35kg isn't soo bad and it looks like it's well built.

@@TheDka1 Have you noticed that the center of the 200 mm focal length at F2.8 is the weakest point of the new Sigma? The same time 200 mm at F2.8 is the strongest point of the Tamron from 2012. There are many cameras for testing with 45 mpx sensors, so you can check it for yourself.
@ Ok, but the reason I'm asking is because you said "Tamron from 2012 (VC) is sharper then this lens @ 200 mm and F2.8. 200 mm focal length" - this is a definitive statement and usually would be qualified by at least using a comparison of the two lenses at the same resolution. So I don't really need to check it for myself; I'm asking if you used/found such a comparison (at the same, or at least similar resolution) to come to this conclusion, yes or no?
Thanks for this review - one thing I don't understand about this lens. It looks like the tripod collar/mount is not removable....why Sigma? The lens might've been around 0.1 - 0.2kg (so 100-200 grams) lighter if that were removable. Anyway, the performance is good but if I were shooting with Sony I'd probably opt for the Tamron 70-180 G2 lens for the weight savings. I shoot Panny boi though so this is the option I've got, I might still opt for the Panasonic 70-200 F4 due to the weight.
One of these days you should to a 70-200 F/4 and F/2.8 showdown. Just line up all versions of all these different lenses together and see which comes out on top, not unlike your F/0.95 prime lens showdown.
Hye I think there might be a sample issue on your end. I have looked at other reviews and they all seem to praise it for sharpness and watching your video, right away it looks way too soft compared to others. I think there might be a missalignemnt as it seems other samples are sharp in the centre and softer on the sides. Good call out for how many stops of stabilization it has though, literally no one I watched today mentioned a word about it.
Wish i could afford one, lovely lens. But on your a5100 ( dont see it all on 7 series ) i can see purple/green fringing on test card around the blacks, middle and corner.
Looks like a fantastic lens for the price and would go perfectly with my Sigma 28-70 f/2.8 for my S5II. Im guessing that 7.5 stops of IS is for L mount. Sony IBIS is terrible in comparison to Lumix L mount cameras.

Some of the design decision are baffling. That hood sucks, what wrong with a simple click in hood? The entire colar should be removable on all lenses like it is for example on my tamron 50 - 400. yeah thats a hard pass. after 20yrs of photography i can tell everyone that at the end of the day lighter gear will trump anything. especailyl if you are hiking somewhere. recently bought the new 70-180mm f2.8 Nikon lens and its fukin amazing. 600g lighter than this and over 1kg lighter than the 70-200 mm version and I can tell you you dont miss that extra 20mm at all at that weight range. these heavy lenses are nice if you are in studio but then again, if youre in studio who shoots at f2.8 anyway? with flash its always going to be 5.6 and up
Nice review, but you really need to upgrade to the A7RV or A7RC. The APSC test shows that this lens struggles to satisfy such a sensor, and that's where you start seeing the differences between the newest lens generation. You can also stop changing cameras for the APSC test. Would rather be interesting to see as well a test with a 33MP sensor for people that don't need the high resolution, they might decide to buy a lens somebody on a 61MP sensor might not.
The reason I test at 42MP is because it's a happy medium between 24MP and 61MP, and it also makes test results more comparable to the 45MP sensors of Canon and Nikon FF cameras.
Are you subscribed to his Patreon? Have you made or consider making a monetary contribution? Maybe donate him the A7RV so he can do the tests you'd like to see? People really like to demand things without thinking how much they cost, as if RUclips pays thousands each month enough to buy all the latest gear...
@JaySilva88 Truth be told, the request is not for me personally since I'm using APSC, but I see how many lenses are falling apart on the edges of the crop sensor that hold up pretty well on the 44MP. I like to advertise him on Reddit, where I tend to give plenty of advice to people. That's my contribution.
@christopherfrost I see your point, and I was already suspecting that. Looking at the APSC results and how many lenses start to fall apart in the edges, which still look fine on the 42MP sensor, my impression is that this compromise might not work that well. Is there no chance to ask Sony for a contribution? After all, you are featuring their bodies in every video, and as it currently stands, you are doing that for bodies that they don't sell anymore. Should be a clear win for them to provide you with their newest models.
If you need to step down to F4 in certain situations and focal range, I think the Sony FE 70-200mm F4 is better. I expected this lens to be excellent from F2.8 across the frame, but it can't compete with the Sony equivalent. Maybe in real-world photography, it performs better than the chart. We shall know after a few months when people will use it more and leave reviews. What is your opinion on this vs the Sony F4 version?
the extended lens while zooming, no apeture ring, no arca swiss tripod mount. Just because you don't need it doesn't say there is no market for it. We own a couple of Sigmas (24-70 dg dn also a great lens) so this will fit in nicely
Mostly for durability being internal zooming with better build quality. Other than that there isn't much reason considering how much they improved the IQ of the G2 and that both can't be used with tele converters.
i'm surprised how sigma always making such bulky bricks, definitely not versalite with 1.5kg weight, in addition, zoom ring at the end of the lens with opposite direction, bravo for this project, restricted to only 15fps, definitely not future proof, so no thank you, every one do better investment in GM II, because £1500 is just wast of money
I only use the a5100 for resolution tests at ISO 100. All the rest of my testing is done on the a7R III. Why would I get an a6700 just for resolution tests?
@@christopherfrost some people think one can have all the gear they want for free, or that RUclips pays so well you can buy every new camera. They also fail to realise that nowadays new camera sensors have little impact on image quality and it's the processing power, autofocus and other features that makes it worth upgrading camera body. If you're doing a IQ test at ISO100 under controlled conditions a5100 vs a6700 makes no difference.

Why no „Art“ version ?
Why aren't not making it to fit F Mount or do they make adaptor for F Mount
When connected to the camera, there is a noise as if the lens was focusing something there. I've had several Sigma lenses and never had a noise like this. I wonder why so...?
Some of the design decision are baffling. That hood sucks, what wrong with a simple click in hood? The entire colar should be removable on all lenses like it is for example on my tamron 50 - 400. It would save a ton of weight for handheld shooters, not to mention the foot removal with multiple screws and "unclean" form when it is removed. Waiting for that Tamron 70-180 G2 review!
When are you going to review 70-200 gm ii
I asked Sony, and their PR team sent me the f/4 version by mistake! I'll be requesting it again some time
@@christopherfrost great thanks, I do use your videos to benchmark all lenses before purchase
I think now we know what will Leica 70-200mm F2.8 lens look like
reviews the new unreleased sigma 70-200m and still no video on the sony 70-200m GMII :(
The Sony is legendary, get it It's amazing :)
The Sony GM ii is legendary, get it :)
What’s your favorite Sigma lens for the Sony Full Frame line?
Just save abit more or 1 month or few months more and get the GM ii. That lens just hard to beat and at 1 kg only. Just remember everytime you use it. You’re carrying something much lighter and sharper and high fps if you use certain sony body. Its not like GM cost many grands more or what. I think its worth it. Best 70-200 f2.8 ever made. Till date at least.
Most definitely
Thanks!
Thanks so much for your support!
I have a Nikon w/ F-mount. I guess it's hopeless to wait for any good lens introductions, even from Nikon itself... 😢
Nikon F? Mate, that's dead. You either look for something you can adapt or adapt yourself and upgrade the body to a Z mount.
@@JaySilva88
Did Nikon officially announce the death of F?
Like many, I have a lot of F lenses... not going to start from scratch with Z. :(
Dear sir plz camper with Canon RF 70-200 f2.8 vs sigma 70-200 f2.8 plz sir
And why would that even be a comparison to make? Doesn’t make sense at all. Compare lenses that are available on the same system. Sir
Right now I'm using Nikon I'm thinking of changing my system I don't know whether to go to Canon or Sony
I think the lens has a noticeably softer centre than corners at 70mm, in both FF and APSC tests.
Oh wow

Po,,,,power🔥🔥🔥🔥
yeah thats a hard pass. after 20yrs of photography i can tell everyone that at the end of the day lighter gear will trump anything. especailyl if you are hiking somewhere. recently bought the new 70-180mm f2.8 Nikon lens and its fukin amazing. 600g lighter than this and over 1kg lighter than the 70-200 mm version and I can tell you you dont miss that extra 20mm at all at that weight range. these heavy lenses are nice if you are in studio but then again, if youre in studio who shoots at f2.8 anyway? with flash its always going to be 5.6 and up
Why always same sample photos
@@christopherfrostAlso saves some money
What is your favorite Sigma lens?
It's no wonder Canon doesnt allow Sigma lenses on RF mount.
Now i might find the older "barry white" version for less😅
thanks for great sharing 👏👏😍😍
So light, so Tiny, so Sharp
This is why Sony needs to keep pumping out Bodies. 3rd party is destroying sony's lens revenue. Great video.
Its too bad that this lens isnt perfect at 200mm 2.8. GM it is!
Praying for you! Jesus loves you
Bigma, late and dead on arrival for E mount.
Nikon fanboys are raging hard 😂.
Its ok but I was expecting a bit more from sigma. I’m a big sigma fan. I know they had been making their lenses smaller and sharper
OMG!!!!!
Too expensive and heavy. Why not go for Tamron 70-180
Because 200mm and sharper
the extended lens while zooming, no apeture ring, no arca swiss tripod mount.
Internal zooming made it more expensive but still demanded in dusty and sandy areas.
Tamron is not nearly as sharp
Extremely poor stabilization, at 200mm it looks bad
I don’t like the design and I’m very disappointed
So get the Sony one
Work out more, it’s not heavy! Lol
i'm surprised how sigma always making such bulky bricks, definitely not versalite with 1.5kg weight, in addition, zoom ring at the end of the lens with opposite direction, bravo for this project, restricted to only 15fps, definitely not future proof, so no thank you, every one do better investment in GM II, because £1500 is just wast of money
still using the a5100, better to upgrade like a6700
A5100 is still a nice camera minus the hotshoe.
Sigma lenses for sony apsc is small and cheaper overall.
I only use the a5100 for resolution tests at ISO 100. All the rest of my testing is done on the a7R III. Why would I get an a6700 just for resolution tests?
You've got to love gearheads who think you always need the latest and greatest for everything
