Michael lost a lot of weight in the past year and is so much lighter in the water, which drastically helps in swimming. Muscles are nice and everything, but it can go against you if you have too much muscle than you should.

The fact that he had to take a break, get rehab and miss the worlds meant that he was able to solve the ongoing problem with drinking etc. This meant he could focus more on the swimming and staying top shape. I suspect a lot of his weight gain after 2012 was down to drinking, not exercising (golf doesnt count), and eating like an olympian
