    How about using Tilta "Dual Handle Power Supply Bracket for DJI Ronin"? I think it's almost same but also we can use battery grip itselft.

    • @AlliandWill
      @AlliandWill  8 месяцев назад +2

      It definitely is an option, but that means you have the battery weight on the gimbal still. With my setup you have no battery weight on the gimbal which means longer shooting and less back pain! So for that reason, I decided against those handles.

  • @user-vu2mv8mk4w

    How do you focus the subjects? What techniques are you using while using two handles

    • @AlliandWill
      @AlliandWill  8 месяцев назад +1

      The same focus techniques that have been used for many decades on professional large productions, as well as modern techniques!
      Parallaxing around the subject without moving closer, starting out of focus and moving into focus, having another assistant on set pull focus with a wireless follow focus system (I have a review video coming up for that soon), or leveraging the incredibly good auto focus systems built into the camera that has eye tracking and subject tracking.

I have an updated 'breakdown' video on how I connected the monitor, but basically, if you buy all the pieces I linked for it (Plate, magic arm and the swivel piece), it will allow you to connect it all from the back of the new plate. I wonder - would this also work with the new RS4 (non-pro)?

    • @AlliandWill
      @AlliandWill  2 месяца назад +1

      I’m not sure! I don’t own the RS4, and I only have experience with the RS3 Pro, but if the battery mount at the bottom uses the same battery grip as the RS3 Pro, then it should work. That being said, the RS4 Pro isn’t really that big of an upgrade. It’s bigger, which is not ideal for my needs, and has an easy way to switch the camera to vertical, which also isn’t needed for my needs. Other than that, it has slightly better motor torque, but the RS3 motors are more than enough for the Sony A7siii, a heavy lens and some accessories.
      I won’t be upgrading for those reasons. My opinion is it would be better to save money and buy the RS3 Pro at this point 👍

  • @shadrussell

    • @AlliandWill

      I’m using the normal battery in the camera but with my setup you could use the dtap splitter cable (I think I have it linked), and then go from dtap to dummy battery for your camera 👍

    Impressive! I don't think this was asked in the comments, but what is your guesstimate hours of use with your 98w battery pack powering both the stabilizer and monitor?

    • @AlliandWill
      @AlliandWill  Месяц назад +2

      To be honest, I don't know because I've never needed to swap to the second battery I own! I used 1 battery for the entire shoot outside which was several hours, and I've also used it multiple times for commercial/corporate shoots without needing to switch. That being said, during those shoots there was down time when I had the gimbal turned off.
      If I had to guess, I'd say somewhere around 5-8 hours of continuous use, which should be enough for 99% of shoots because of down time, but I could be way off, which is why I own a second battery, just in case!
      It's become somewhat of a luxury to me that I don't need to change batteries on the monitor or gimbal and that I can just trust it's always good. I've been thinking about connecting my DTap splitter and running a dummy battery to the camera, or USB-C so I don't need to change the camera battery as well.

    Great build Will! Curious, in the video at 7:26, I get that you used the Manfrotto plate that has the 1/4" 20 female thread on the underside rear of the plate. I get that you used the little SmallRig friction arm, the 1/4" 20 male into the plate. But to attach the other end, which is 1/4" 20 male to your Small HD monitor mount with tilt, doesn't the end of the Small Rig arm have 1/4" 20 male and don't the monitor mounts also usually have a 1/4" 20 male also? How did you get rid of one of the male connectors and replaced it with a 1/4" 20 female?
    I have several SmallRig and other brand monitor mounts and none them have 1/4" 20 female taps on the bottom, I'm stumped how you attached? Can you clarify?

      Thanks for watching and commenting. For sure; There’s a swivel adapter product that was released within the last couple years by small rig (others have it too), which allows you to connect it to the bottom of the monitor and to the end of the friction arm. It came with my monitor, but you can buy it by itself too. I’ll make a note to update that part in the links for the exact one I’m using in the next day or two. (I also used lock washers on both sides of the friction arm so that it wouldn’t get loose.)

      I replied to your other comment, but I’ll copy and paste it here too. It’s the Action 5 monitor; It’s 5” they actually just discontinued the monitor because people were complaining about it, which I don’t understand. It was 1/5th the price of their other monitors. It works great, but just has limited features. Perfect for gimbals. Too bad they don’t make ‘em anymore. Best alternative is what I have linked now in the description and pinned comment.

      The monitor is a long term investment, and so are the vmount batteries plus some of the cables, making the actual investment over the long term less as the monitor/batteries/cables can be used for other setups.
      Not including the gimbal and monitor, the setup is probably under $750
      Maybe $2000-2500 including gimbal and monitor. Sooo much cheaper than my previous gimbal which was like $7k 😅

    • @AlliandWill
      @AlliandWill  2 месяца назад +1

      Unfortunately, you're pretty limited with options. The point of this video was to show that you don't need to use the original battery grip. I used the best option available to create a smaller, lighter rig. My recommendation stays with the powerbase I showed, it's great

  • @Photonees
    @Photonees 18 дней назад

    Interesting setup, was just reading the reviews on the powerbase, it seems the slack and wiggle is still there. A buyer made a review 2 month ago and says there is still a gap, while you say it is "fixed"? hmmm

    • @AlliandWill
      @AlliandWill  17 дней назад

      The initial wiggle was massive, to the point that it would not lock. The current version might be off on some of them, but it is incredibly easy to fix with a piece of duct tape if you feel that yours doesn't lock as tightly as you'd like. Mine was fine, most are, but sometimes imperfections happen during manufacturing. Again, a small piece or two of duct tape on one of the sides will completely solve the problem.

    I don't think having batteries on you and a cable attached outweighs the length of the DJI battery. It's not that long without the tripod on the bottom and at least you have another handle to grab if you need it. You're not really gaining anything at all in my opinion.

    • @AlliandWill
      @AlliandWill  9 месяцев назад +2

      I disagree. I’ve shot commercial content for big brands for the last 12+ years and have rented/used numerous gimbal combinations and have owned numerous gimbals over the last 8 years. Without a doubt, off setting the weight, and making the unit smaller provides significantly longer shooting times and options for fitting the gimbal in smaller places. The gimbal in this configuration is like 5” shorter and weighs less too. I recently shot a project for KFC with this exact build and it was sooo much better. I could shoot longer takes before getting tired and I was able to do creative shots close up over a table dressed up with food products

    • @Nightlife-zv1fm
      @Nightlife-zv1fm 9 месяцев назад

      @@AlliandWill Not sure if you have seen the Tilta dual handle support that includes one grip. It looks like you use the original DJI grip on the other side. Both handle power the gimbal and it does away with the cable. Both handles have controls on them. Also the handles are pointing up instead of down which makes it even more compact and I'd imagine the weight would be better distributed.
      It looks amazing.

    • @AlliandWill
      @AlliandWill  9 месяцев назад +3

      That means the battery weight is on the gimbal. In my setup there are no gimbal or monitor batteries on the gimbal, so it’s definitely lighter which means longer takes. If you prefer that setup, go for it, but I’ve used full cage Freefly M15 gimbals with cinema cameras, full ring gimbal setups, single handle Rs1 gimbals, M5 gimbals and out of every setup, I prefer the one I made (which is based on using all the setups and choosing which elements make the most sense for shooting commercial content as well as run and gun stuff like the clips I shot for fun in the video. I can also turn the handles upright if I want, I just prefer them down. I find I can operate smoother parallaxing shots that way. Thanks for the discussion!
