  • Installing a turntable with a roundhouse can be a very frustrating thing to get right, even with a template. I will show you how I am going to do it to help take the mystery out of the process. This series begins with building the bench work for the whole diorama. Yours will look different than mine but the concept is the same, make it fit.

Like the sound of the Crickets Bob. One of the simple pleasures of life.

Looking good, thanks for letting us know about drilling the perimeter holes before removing the wood for the turntable.

Sometimes you get so excited about cutting the big hole first that you forget the little ones, the details. Thanks for watching.

Hmmm? That is hard to tell since I haven't tried it. The angles could be wrong depending on the turntable it was meant to connect with. A 130' turntable vs a 90' version has a different radius and where the tracks are set to come off to the roundhouse. A Walthers roundhouse like mine is designed for a 130' turntable. Putting an Atlas one on it may have to be put in a different area and not connected to the Walthers one so the tracks can line up to it. You may have to get creative with straight or curved track into each stall. Not impossible, but I would stick with what works and the same brand so it looks correct.

great job sir, this was the video series that I just started when the flood destroyed the basement, so glad you did a video of this, I will not be getting back to the turn table and round house series for 5 or 6 months, thanks for sharing

Thanks for sharing this information. I have owned and used this turntable, but elected to use the old Heljan roundhouse which allows more space between the turntable lip and the front of the roundhouse. I like this so I can park steam locomotives between the roundhouse and turntable that have been served or are waiting to be serviced.

I have seen those before and wondered how the walthers one got so far back. That is when I found out that it was a Heljan instead. Well this came bundled together as a set, used but not very long. Plus I do not have the additional space for a Heljan kit. Can the Heljan fit a BigBoy?

I do not own a Big Boy; I own 2 of the Bachmann EM-1s and older 2-8-8-2s. They fit the turn table, but as I recall are longer than the roundhouse stalls.

That is the sound of cicadas in the trees outside the garage. Not much I could do about it.
