One day I’ll show my son he made it onto one of Uncle Ninjon’s videos! One of the guys I met from your class and I are meeting up to paint over Spring Break. Thanks again for the good times!
As a long time tournament player (been to the ETC more than 10 times) I needed to comment. RUclips tutorials, like the ones you make, have changed my mind about painting drastically. Before, I was just painting to score decent on the tournaments, but now I paint for the joy of creating. I really hope you know the big difference you and other youtubers make out here :) Thanks as always for the awsome content!
I'm more of a painter than player, but LVO was my first time being in a warhammer tournament! I had a ton of fun. My army made it into the finals for the painting. Got to shake hands with Duncan. People seemed to like my Firehaunt and I ended up positive in score. It was great! I also bought your paints!
What I like best about the Las Vegas Tournament is that it is a Swiss tournament. Each round you are paired with someone of your record. You do not get eliminated from the Swiss portion of the tournament. Best format for those who want to play for fun.
Hilarious video and I was glad to be an "extra" in it! I was in Ben Komets' class and saw you pop in and get footage. I met you and Scott briefly at Adepticon last year. I love that you're helping bring attention to LVO because I live in Vegas and want more painting classes and teachers to come out here.
I think the idea of promoting these types of classes is fantastic! I think it opens up these events for the types of hobbyists that don't play the games but also want to learn.
Great summary to the bright side of the painting and gaming community. I'd love to see a video about preparing to paint on the road (like on a convention), how to pack, what to bring etc.
I’m glad you touched on the hobby aspect of tournament play. I would love to hear you dive into your thoughts on “3 color minimum” and “battle ready” requirements and whether you think they are good or bad or both, for the hobby 🙂
Battle ready is fine, but all events should have a really good prize for best painted armies and most sportsmanship It incentivizes painting well but doesnt push away people who perhaps arent that skilled or have motor issues while still asking for a minimum ammount of effort
As someone who enjoys both aspects of the hobby If I’m going to Golden Demon, going to look at some Armies on Parade or even just local competitions for painting, I expect the painting would take priority, highlights, detail, layers, added terrain etc If I’m going to a local Killteam event or a Warcry or even a 500pt AoS game at the GW store, I’m not gonna be overly concerned if the models are “battle ready” that’s the idea. Battle ready is great for people who want cool looking models on the table to play, not everyone is a Ninjon or Scott from Miniac who admits he spends roughly 10 hours on each model. Some of us have busier lives and need to get something done so it looks nice on the table when we get together for a game
Tournaments shouldn't require painted models. Properly built to fit wysiwyg? Yes. But painted? No. Already cost enough for tournament legal plastic. Shouldn't make you pay more just to compete against others officially. Painting is art. Tournaments are about beating your opponent, which doesn't require anything but skill. I've never understood why the conflation of art and play happen in this hobby. The rules that go outside published books (painting, "balancing", and more) are not part of the playing of the game. They are additions you CAN use if you want to treat a table top game like a digital game and patch it constantly or add community agreed upon homebrew. But that's what painting is: homebrew rules the community got convinced to obey. Especially if you're playing a faction with rules differences between subs. It's not reasonable to force someone to have multiple identical armies just to take advantage of subfaction differences or custom (chapters/craft worlds/Boyz/etc.). If I want to play Space Marines I should be able to buy ONE set of minis and play any chapter I want with them. Which cannot happen if they are painted. Unless they are stripped and repainted. No other type of game has this issue.
5:16 So you know, mead can have like 18% alcohol by volume. So drinking an entire mug full of it could be a very bad idea or a very good one depending on your goals and age.
Mead is generally weaker, between about 7% and 12%, but as you say it can be stronger. It’s so sweet, however, that you can only drink so much, and few people will drink enough to get fully baked.
Yes, generally, but I've made mead with 22% ABV. Now that was an exception as it was a blueberry mead, that used very dry yeast and other things to get the ABV to a high level. You can though make a mead that has less ABV and isn't super sweet. You just need to adjust the water-to-honey ratio and use specific yeasts, for example, baker's yeast does produce that much alcohol. By doing this, you could bring down the ABV and sweetness to around the level of a beer. I've had historical meads that did this, they were... weird tasting. This process would make sense though as honey was pretty hard to come by, and you couldn't exactly go down to the nearest brew supply store and pick up a super high-grade yeast for a few bucks.
I had the privilege of meeting you there. One of the highlights of my trip. Love your videos and how accessible you make painting. As a fellow Minnesotan I how our paths cross in the frozen north.
Great meeting you at LVO and dug seeing your own film from the event. Hopefully can get to one of your workshops when it isn’t clashing with a tournament. Perhaps it would be easier if you came to Australia 🤣
Great video! Was expecting a joke thrown at Scott at the end when you said "If you want to learn from some phenomenal painters" I expected to hear a "and Scott" lol but loved how the end just highlighted how fun and positive this community is, I haven't been a part of it for long and I have found it extremely friendly :)
My kids have gotten back into Warhammer and they have gotten pretty good at it. So much so I (at an advanced age 😂) have been painting a few of their models but mine suck compared to theirs. Hence why I started watching your videos, I really enjoy the content and have used your techniques on the WW2 models I enjoy building. Thanks for the entertaining videos.
I love going to tournaments as it gives me a chance to catch up with mates in the region the tournament is held in and to further develop my armies narrative. I don’t tend to win many if any of my games either, but I do love the laughs and yarns I have with my mates 😊
I got back into painting warhammer 40k minis nearly 20 years after I stopped because of careers etc because of 40k Darktide. Some friends reccomended your channel and as i watched this video I was (and I still am) painting some of my Sisters of Battle out of the combat patrol box. Great Video Ninjon, may have to try and make it next year!
Dude. The difference between a player, and a tournament player, SOMETIMES, is that he paid a fee to play the game in a organized matter. That's it. I'm just a player, and there are NO LOCAL TOURNAMENTS here in Brazil, but hell, if there was, I would pay and play it, JUST FOR KICKS. I would bring the most UN-META, thematic, well-painted warband I have, and I would probably lose the first two matches, and I would be THRILLED. But regardless, I would be, in fact, a tournament player right there and then, even though I really don't see the difference, I'm just playing the game as I always do: Sometimes to win, mostly to have fun and see how a warband works. I only play Underworlds and Warcry, and both are very beginner friendly, or have narrative focused tournaments.
Well there are a few but your mileage may vary, a few of my playgroup go nuts about them while I avoid it like the plague... mostly because I'm in bad terms with the TO.
Maninho, tem torneio sim. Que regiao vc mora ? Ti coloco no grupo de whats que tem anuncio de torneio todo ano. Esse ano estamos fazendo uma cruzada. Moro sp
My experience in the Hobby Dojo at LVO 2022 was not very good. My husband is the wargamer, and hanging out to paint was literally all I had to do. I don't exactly regret it, but I don't think I could ever recommend the event to another painter based on my experience. It was the single most negative experience I've ever had at any painting event. I hope they did actually improve greatly this year.
I've said it before, and I will say it again sir! I don't play warhammer, I don't paint, and I don't do models; really just far removed from this channel's content... and I still love this channel. I learn stuff I will likely never use, but the presentation here is just so fun.
Dude, been playing the AOS tournament sceen in the UK for 2 years now and most people take pride in their painting. Sure some slap it on for a quick new army but so so many take pride in the models they bring and want people to say "Man, I love the way you painted them". Its a big part of the hobby and most tournament players are sso into it that they love the painting and conversion part. Love your stuff. Do go to tournaments and do spend time to see the amazing stuff people do. It's often the only time people get to show off their painting as they don't have a massive e Instagram presence or the time to even put stuff online.
Hey I'm in this video! My first LVO didn't play any games but took a couple painting classes and I loved it!! I'll be back next year for sure and maybe play in one of the friendly games but for sure taking a hobby classes again.
Geeze @Ninjon - I would have worn my Sunday best if I would have known I'd be featured in like 10 'cameos'. Loved the class, looking forward to more to come.
Great video, I am just under 2 years in the hobby and I think you got the point here. Everybody has its place, may it be more towards painting or actually playing, or even both. I will go to LVO 2025 for the first time - cannot wait to be there - even if it is a very long way from Germany.
i think you summed up the LVO experience really well... and as someone who is passionate about both the hobby side and the competitive side, its nice to hear your new found understanding of us competitive nerds. wish we would have had more time to chat and hang. next time dude.
I find LVO's lack of cable management disturbing, haha. Having recently competed in a small 10 person Kill Team tournament I can't imagine what must happen behind the scenes at LVO for a smooth run.
I'm playing in my first tournament in about 3 weeks here and it's something I never thought I'd do. I don't consider myself a terribly competitive person, but when my friend sent me the fact that there would be one in my area, I decided, anxiety be damned, I'm going to try and see what it's like. It's certainly been good for making me focus on painting one particular army. I have 4 armies between AOS and 40k at this point, not to mention the half dozen other wargames I have models for and I never thought I'd actually see one of my armies fully, or at least, mostly, painted, but here I am. I'm damn sick of painting Nighthaunt and anxious as hell about the coming tournament at this point, but I'm absolutely going to see it all through.
A lot to unpack here: Charles was great! Congratz on winning silver 🏆 in masters' category ! Continue with the blooper reel! And yes - we must find time to 🖌slay the grey! 🤠👍
Congrats Jon. I'm going to Ark40k in March. I'm not really bothered about the 40k bit but I'll enter a few of my efforts in the painting competition - which will be judged by Emil and Lukas. GULP!!
LVO was amazing, I loved being there. I didn't tournament or enter a competition, I just went around and viewed everything. Bought myself a Corax kit too lol!
You didn't need to stare at me like that Jon. Already preordered your set of paints weeks ago. Also, I think the names Darrel came up with for your paints are best seller ;) Dead Toenail "nailed me" so very much :D
First tournament my best friend and I attended was Warzone ATL, a super major. Hundreds of people, timed matches, on our feet all day twice. It was brutal. I can't wait to go again.
You and Charles are real ones. I hope to run into both of you at LVO soon. I'm both a painter and a player, maybe leaning towards the latter, but I love both.
Hey Ninjon can you do a video in regard to what steers you to choose a specific project? Is it the aesthetic of the sculpt? Is it the color scheme you envision using? What makes something awesome enough to spend your quality time painting it for display?
There might be a message or two in this that goes beyond the gamer-painter dichotomy. I think we can all be friends. Doesn't matter why you slay the gray, just do it.
Been watching your vids since starting in the hobby and the result is I get good comments on my miniatures. I’m still learning the nuances of 40K, and have a lot of fun playing, everyone I’ve met has been awesome. I’m planning on going to LVO 24 and maybe play a pickup game. Hope to run into you if you attend.
Tournaments are so much fun. Earlier this month a went to a small MESBG tournament in my area to enjoy my new cool and mighty Nazguls on fellbeasts and new hosts of troops. It was a blast and everything went my way. Ended up first and won the best painted army. Although I must say I had a really beautifull army. I'm no display painter, but I'm capable of placing a really cool and good looking army on the battlefield. I knew most people there and it's always a blast hanging with those guys. And also the tournament decider was with a new oponent I had never played with. I must say the game was a blast and came down to the very last turn. It was an epic game. Also I'm really happy I slayed 2 Theoden's with my Nazguls on that day even one with my Witch King wich has Theoden's horse under his feet on his base
It's been a while since I have seen one of your videos, and man, they just keep being better. I mean sure the lack of my man Daryl is a little concerning, but I guess I get why you wouldn't bring him to Vegas with you. Just wanted to say I have noticed how far you have come since you started this channel and you could use a reminder of how great it has become.
So I got excited by your new Pro arcyl set video and ended up buying the whole collection (I did have the discount after all). I have to say, they are pretty fantastic paints overall.
Didn't know you had a daughter. Good to know, i got my first kid on the way! Nice to see its possible to juggle a kid while still get some painting done ;)
Went to LVO this year for my first ever Con and didn't realise that it was primarily a tournament Con but as a general hoobyist I stil had a blast! I competed in the speed paint and in con competitions cause why not? I didn't win but really motivated my hobby and what I am capable of. Also super cool to meet you and Scott and be at TUP live :D
Make own mead ! its easy, cheap and effects are way better than anything from shop :) I make different meads for many years and what i prefer is actually 3to1 with 30% fresh pressed juice based on honey bought from my friend beekeeper. PS You know that Displate is Polish company, tho they got part of their business in Texas. Makes me proud to see Orkish company being successful in something more than making vodka :D
Ninjon: I feel bad for putting people in little silos, we all have much more in common then I realized. Also Ninjon: I can’t believe these guys didn’t come to class hung over and complaining about their gambling debts.
Truth is I have been painting Warhammer for decades. I have played the game maybe a handful of times. I enjoy painting models 100 times more than I do playing said game.
If you drink mead out of one of those bull horns..., well good luck to you. Meanwhile back in the spiritual home of mead we drink it out of Cornish pints, and it that gets us shitfaced enough 🥴
Pre Ligma I used to attend 2-3 conventions a year, mostly gaming and anime conventions. Now, it's harder for me to attend just due to time issues and money, but I always had a blast when I went. I even helped arrange and staff a few cons in the past and hosted panels and tournaments of various types. Most fun I ever had was at WorldCon - the longest running sci Fi literature convention in the world. It's hosted all around the world and I got to meet a tons of authors- like George RR Martin, and talk to them for a bit. Gaming wise the convention that was my yearly tradition- Chimera Con- sadly is no more. But I hope to find a new a con to replace it some day.
people also presume all miniature painter's play the game and they all do warhammer , myself I don't play the games , I just paint and also I don't do warhammer. I started painting in 1973 with Airfix and just painted the vehicles and figures and got the bug and love for purly painting.

I’m glad you touched on the hobby aspect of tournament play. I would love to hear you dive into your thoughts on “3 color minimum” and “battle ready” requirements and whether you think they are good or bad or both, for the hobby 🙂
Battle ready is fine, but all events should have a really good prize for best painted armies and most sportsmanship
It incentivizes painting well but doesnt push away people who perhaps arent that skilled or have motor issues while still asking for a minimum ammount of effort
As someone who enjoys both aspects of the hobby

Those openimg shots looks like my kind of personnal hell.
I had some buddies that were there. I just got into Warhammer and hope to go to a convention like this soon
Love your work and the work you do with your acquaintances! 😋 Ps loving the beat 4 minutes in the video. Warme groet vanuit Holland ! ✌️
8:01 Thank you for validating my life on the spectrum.
Bit of positivity goes a long way to broghten up the day 🎉🎉🎉
Tournaments are so much fun.
Yo congrats on being a part of the Army Painter PDT!
Super wholesome video Jon! I’m going to seek out a con over here in the UK asap
Hahahaha, great summary. Let's not forget the elevator event...
Looks like a blast! thanks for the video jon!
I’m super happy that you had a great time!
So the gamers and the painters cross streams from time to time. 👍
So I got excited by your new Pro arcyl set video and ended up buying the whole collection (I did have the discount after all). I have to say, they are pretty fantastic paints overall.
I hope yall attend next year. I totally plan to attend a class next year.
I wish I could give this vid more than one like. I started cry laughing at the look at Scott talk about some bullshit line.
Somewhere around Barstow edge of dessert were the warhammer tortment took a hold
Didn't know you had a daughter. Good to know, i got my first kid on the way! Nice to see its possible to juggle a kid while still get some painting done ;)
Damn Jon, that LVO footage looks like the shake cam footage from Cloverfield, BUT from the monsters perspective. LOL just kidding.
Congratulations on the Silver Jon.
Jon you didn't mention your utter failure to find any of the fireball shots hidden around the con... Very disappointed haha
RIP me being the guy at the monument booth footage not buying Jon's paint set..........
Make own mead ! its easy, cheap and effects are way better than anything from shop :)
I make different meads for many years and what i prefer is actually 3to1 with 30% fresh pressed juice based on honey bought from my friend beekeeper.
PS You know that Displate is Polish company, tho they got part of their business in Texas. Makes me proud to see Orkish company being successful in something more than making vodka :D
As a guy who has extremely dry humor I can say I found the video outstanding.
I love the Rio, been to many a convention there. Hope to one day make one of these. Your shameless plug worked, lots of new paint incoming! 😁
Ninjon: I feel bad for putting people in little silos, we all have much more in common then I realized.
Also Ninjon: I can’t believe these guys didn’t come to class hung over and complaining about their gambling debts.
Charles is a GOAT for sure, and I definitely want to try and go next year
Truth is I have been painting Warhammer for decades. I have played the game maybe a handful of times. I enjoy painting models 100 times more than I do playing said game.
Superb video. Nuff said
you forgot to close with "I'm John Ninas, and I support this message."
Classes would be great I like the idea of pitting the students against each other lol
If you drink mead out of one of those bull horns..., well good luck to you.
Meanwhile back in the spiritual home of mead we drink it out of Cornish pints, and it that gets us shitfaced enough 🥴
There were over 100 marvel crisis protocol, players at LVO! The third largest game there we are growing as a community!
Looks like fun, and congratulations. Should have been GOLD!!!!
This so interesting i watched brickys video on the convention but thats all i knew about the convention.
nice video
Scott is the last person I would go to if I needed to paint a model fast...
4:47 look at that fiend
Hm... Only 6,000 miles... I will definitely come next time .
