I don't have what they call a "Jay Lenno" car. So, I go with what I can afford, and looks decent.
What I used when I did my buddies 67’ I used ACE hardware brand paint, satin black. I have no idea who makes it for them, but I can say it lays down nicely. I did use the red oxide primer as well. I like the look of the satin, it’s got a lower sheen to it. The paint it in really tall cans and you get more for your money.
I just used a Van Sickle oil based enamel in satin black. I used a foam roller and did 2 coats. Came out better than I expected. I also used it on my entire frame after cleaning and rust reform.
Looking forward to this. Almost ready to paint the engine bay on my 71. I'm seriously considering using flat black though.
Jeff, I used SEMS hot rod black paint kit. It's a perfect match. Very durable.
SEM paint is usually very good quality.
Recently did work in side the front wheel wells, cleaning things to a bare metal then used a Grey Rust-Oleum primer ( lesson leaned, to what Jeff commented on black primer would of made life much easier) afterwards using Rust-Oleum SemiGloss Black followed by Rust-Oleum truck bed coating ( in most areas) I’m pleased with all three all be it the Semi Gloss paint is a bit shinier than stock, or at least 53 year old stock paint; I’m pleased
I use the Rustoleum red hat satin black industrial paint in the tall rattle cans. It's also a standard RAL colour so easy to replicate.
I like summit racing chassis shield semi gloss for a couple of reasons. It looks just right after it dries; furthermore, it’s an epoxy so it’s super durable of you spill gas or brake fluid. It’s also very affordable and easy to spray.
Great information, Jeff
Hi Jeff, long time since the last contact.
Engine bays, to me, I paint them to what the car is going to be used for. However, always (in Australia & the USA) I used a 2 pack paint as I want the finish to be resistant to what spills on it in that part of the vehicle.
Black primer is good advice for that area, but a lot of the time I have used the same red primer I use on the shell after the car had been blasted.
On cars I am trying to duplicate the original finish, I also have some exterior colour (Aussie spelling) on the rears of the shock towers, yes, I paint the engine bay on "so called concourse" cars last. Regardless, it is a matter of what the customer wants, the customer gets.
That goes for all out there playing with their cars, do your best and enjoy the results.
At the moment I am repainting our Mach 1 but leaving the engine bay all marked up as the aim is to make the car look like a survivor (although it has been restored, by us, some 35 years ago). Then to get it back on the road and have fun.
Im currently doing the engine bay on my 67 mustang, i am spraying black epoxy primer followed by eastwood rat rod black wich ends up being satin black and does not chalk up after a few years
Hello there Jeff, as usual, a very informative and entertaining segment... The paint/car/paint tech was awesome 😎.. Though I find I'm really tuning in for my cat "fix". It's some non subliminal mind control you have now.. The only thing missing is Shi sitting on yer lap, all "Specter" style !!! God bless..
I used Rustolium satin black with Majic Catalyst. Good semi gloss and very durable.
There used to be a great semi-gloss available in quart cans called Black Satin. No mixing, just pour out of the can and spray. Like the others you mentioned earlier, it's no longer available.
Hey Jeff, New to your channel back on January when I acquired a "C" code '65 Falcon Futura. In the past, on my '73 El Camino, I have used VHT Epoxy because it is a direct to metal paint (DTM) and is fuel and oil proof. Also it is very durable. The sheen might be a little on the gloss side but that can be adjusted with a Scotch Brite pan. Spray out some test panels to see what your likes are. Wayno from Ohio.
Thanks for watching Wayne. I plan to do some sprayouts.
I use the VHT chassis and rollback paint. Very tough stuff and it sprays out beautifully.
I just discovered that. In wiping down my 1980 Fairmont with acetone it wipes down to bare metal super easy
Acetone is a good metal prep cuz it removes any oils and greases but you have to be careful to go ahead and paint pre immediately because it will start to rust quickly
My locally available somewhat cheap black paint is Van Sickle tractor and implement paint. It's an acrylic enamel. You can use the flat black 473 71 with the hardener they sell or if you want a little more gloss you can use a super gloss hardener from a regular paint supplier and get more of a semigloss.
Not really the best deal cost wise for that paint but it is actually a good quality paint. The hardener is overpriced since it's being sold at a retail store and if you use it check the date as it may be old and the hardener is what goes bad quickly. If you have a good local paint supplier that carries more than just the big names then you can usually get better paint and more colors for roughly the same price.
I have a hard time using anything on a car these days that doesn't have a hardener added to it. I like the durability and the quick curing times.
Love the cat cam!
Have you ever tried electroluminescent paint and if you do on a 67 - the LED lights are better but still have black areas on the tachometer
Should of had a conversation with the cat 😂. Thanks for the information and video.
We got worried about the cat when she left the camera view. 🐈⬛
Sherwin Williams graphite black 2K is what I used
PPG DP90 epoxy primer is what I have used since 1983. Today it is DP90LF.
I didn’t want to strip everything to absolutely bare metal, so for better or worse, I went with Por-15. If I win the lottery and can afford to give the care a frame-off restoration, I’ll do it right, but for now, it’s good enough. :)
I plan on redoing my 63 engine bay in body color. I’ll body work it and make it slick. I think it’s better than the factory black. Just me.
i love m some tractor paint mix flat gloss white to get grey just play till you get what you need i even used tractor supply stuff and made painting with pears powders blue candy stuff in clear just to play with looks A ok on stuff .just did up a 220 predator with silver hammered metal rattle can rustolumunmmee base and my clear tractor supply stuff with that blue in it looks great
I have a 69 Falcon wagon and I always thought the Ford engine compartments were satin black…who knows?😀 after looking at a few things I think I may do POR-15 with rustoleum on top just to protect it from UV.
Good idea.
Back in '91 when I restored the engine bay of my '69 Cobra, used the Krylon 1613. Thirty-two years later, still looks great. Yep, I painted the whole thing. I'd removed everything, including steering sector, wiring, etc. I found the Krylon matched original paint perfectly. Judged by matching "never seen light of day paint" under grommet for wiring harness connector.
Good to know!
I know it's not most Fords, but I like them body color under the hood. I know what's not helpful, but that's how I feel.
I used Rust-oleum 7777830 Satin Black
Currently repainting my engine and doing some of the bay as well. Used AP-ECB from NPD for engine bay and POR-15 for engine. Loving it all so far.
Cool.
rust-oleum semi gloss black, good choice.
I like Martin seymor chassis black when I can find it at NAPA.
Martin Seymor is good stuff.
HI on my 64 falcon I medallion hot rod black MRS-4250
Great info on the paint for underhood coverage... However, just watching this episode has my eyes itching! 😂 Severely allergic to cats.
Cat Black, happen to have one in stock😊
Lol
Hello Jeff. I used Rustoleum "Canyon Black" on my tbird. Not on the engine bay, as it is the same color as the car body. But I used it on the rear axle, springs, fan blade, etc. It is a semi-gloss and is a pretty darn close match to the original color/sheen.
George B
Thanks for the color.
Jeff I painted my engine compartment with Rustoleum Semi-Gloss Black. And it has lost some sheen over the years. And +1 to using black primer. I used some red oxide primer when doing some touch up and I can still find spots in the daylight where I can see it - won’t do that again!
Jeff I’m really impressed with Krylon Fusion paints. It’s an all-in-one type of paint (paint and primer), excellent coverage and extremely durable.
How about a "Cam cam".. 😁
The cat!!!! Jajajjajjaj❤
How are you feeling today Jeffro?
Getting better. Even exercising!
Jeff, you're still a chick magnet!
Hahahahaha
Thanks Jeff, but I’d rather have a Cam cam…
i'll be honest; i tuned in for the cat.
what's her name?
Lol. Her name is Shi Thead.
I just finished using the Rustoleum Acrylic Enamei in a semi-gloss black( the can says 2X coverage). It looks good. Stay away from the UPOL acrylic enamel, it caused us problems.
You just had a cat scan
I’m using rust oleum flat black with Hardner
When I pull my engine in my 66 mustang and I was thinking on using Eastwood hot rod black that is semi gloss
Cats are sweet fun critters i got a few 1 tom tabby cat 15 years and 2 year tom tabby best buddies. five tom cats 🗡fixed🔪 all in never thought i have that many but things happen fun times at 2am lol.the other day i had 3 asleep one at my feet one behind me other in front
I mean, I wouldn't be MAD if you talked about cats in a video... Just sayin'!
She wants to buy a cougar

Cats only work with themselves. 🤣
😂 😺
Please leave the cat at home. Thanks
The BEST paint for that is VHT High Temperature Chassis Roll Bar Paint. Eastwood products are garbage as far as their paints and coatings.
