  • A recap of the new features announced by Apple at WWDC 2024.
    This channel has an extremely irregular newsletter, so irregular, in fact, some people think it doesn't exist.
    However when it goes out, it's about Apple Notes, knowledge management, and general channel news. You can subscribe here: docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FA...

    Personally, the function I'm hoping for, is to be able to lock notes with files/attachments.

      Yes, that's another inexplicable thing 🤷‍♂️ Not only you can't lock notes with attachments; you can't even lock notes with tags!...

    Can I just let you know that I’m running the new beta on Mac and Apple notes features math within notes. No Apple Pencil needed.

      Fantastic, thanks for confirming that. 👍 It's a much more useful (although less flashy) feature. Let us know if you spot something else!

      Maybe you can also share if it is possible to do the math with a not hand-written list or table?

    Would love for the iPhone 14 Pro to have all of these new features..

    Collapsible sections and text highlighting are very welcome. Still no horizontal rule??

      they are (small) steps in the right direction...but there's a long way to go!

    22:32 You do make some valid points about every new release of Apple. Apple is catching up with Microsoft but has made a good approach at it. Now Apple need to develop more useful features that normal consumers uses on a daily basis for their system. But so far everything look satisfying.

    • @Patrick-NP
      @Patrick-NP  Месяц назад

      yes, they seem (understandably?) more attracted to the flashy, PR-worthy stuff, than to the everyday features that could really make a difference for normal users..

    Collapsible sections it the thing I've been waiting for. I already use Apple Notes for most things, but found Obsidian better for longer writing, largely because I can do thing like highlight (with a plugin) and collapse sections. Having highlighting and collapsible sections in Apple Notes might bring me over fully to Apple notes.

      great then, it looks like iOS18 will do the trick for you. :) obsidian remains a better option for people who are interested in markdown support, portability, and notes navigation (read: backlinks), but hopefully Apple Notes will bridge those gaps soon!

      @@Patrick-NP Yeah, my only issue is the markdown and navigation support. I do find navigation (not just backlinks but also the ability to go BACK) in Obsidian much faster. My issue is that I do so much on mobile. I will have to see how Apple Notes looks in iOS 18.

    I always hope we get some basic control over typography like control over line length, line width.. I wish for markdown to come too, but I know that is never going to happen.

    • @Patrick-NP
      @Patrick-NP  Месяц назад +1

      It will always be a glaring omission, especially considering how much effort Apple places in making notes look good in their presentations!

  • @nickt2159
    @nickt2159 Месяц назад

    I understand the need for typography. But can using a text box help solve the problem of line length?

    • @Patrick-NP
      @Patrick-NP  Месяц назад

      I think it could, yes, but of course it would be a workaround for simple cases (for example: if you wrote text in two columns, it wouldn't reflow automatically between the two). Many of those features are already available in Pages; porting some of them to Notes shouldn't be too difficult..

  • @halfwit2

    I hope basic markdown will be available that went into the messages app, at very least

    • @Patrick-NP
      @Patrick-NP  Месяц назад +1

      I hope Markdown doesn't end up like the Calculator app on an iPad, 14 years in the making despite everybody asking for it!

      There is a very cool app that extends Apple Notes at least on the Mac to support Markdown and also Backlinks --> ProNotes. There are features that need an abbo, but markdown and backlinks is available in the free version. Started to try this some weeks ago and I loved it right from the beginning.,

    I use Notability's transcription feature because it syncs with my written notes. While I type, it records the conversation and later, during Playback, I can click anywhere on my hand written notes and then audio syncs and starts to play at that point. Do you know if that is available? The only reason I am not using Apple Notes for my meetings is because of this feature.

    • @Patrick-NP
      @Patrick-NP  Месяц назад

      as far as I know, iOS18 will bring audio transcriptions but they won't be synced with the note. Actually, I'm not even sure you'll be able to record audio AND take a note at the same time. We'll have to check once the new version is released..

    Those Microsoft Windows in the background of your video keep reminding me that OneNote is a superior note taking product.
    Your video was very good. I agree that collapsing sections is great and the handwriting ai is really cool for people that want to hand write in notes but have terrible scribble.

    so many (too many?) new features that I most likely will never ever use. I also explicitly don't want "something" to "improve" my own drawings, handwriting, idea's for stories etc. Strange how org-mode in Emacs is still light years ahead when it comes down to productivity and accessibility across platforms and time.

    • @Patrick-NP
      @Patrick-NP  Месяц назад +1

      yep. hopefully there will be a switch in the settings for some of these features! re: Emacs, fair point that highlights the difference between an open system, extendable and rich in features (but with a steeper learning curve) and a closed one (way more limited, but usable from day 1).

    14 57 *”And this all works in Notes, too. Notes has all the new math capabilities from Calculator."*
    Actually it’s the other way around. Math Notes _just is Notes_ and the only thing the MN link in Calc does is switch you to Notes. There isn’t any integration between Notes and Calc; you can’t even paste results between the two. I’m confused as to why Apple is marketing MN as a Calc feature when it’s all Notes.
    10:47 *”You won’t be able to use the same feature on an iPhone*”
    Yes, you can. You just write with your finger.
    *"They said some AI features will only be available"*
    I’m using it now with Beta 1, so apparently Math Notes isn’t AI. iPad Air M1, iPhone 15 Pro Max.

      Hi, thanks for your interesting points - I guess Apple has "simplified" /omitted a few things during the keynote :) Also being this a beta I'm sure we'll see new details and changes emerge in the next few weeks. For example the use of variables, the totals etc should work also with typed text, but they only showcased the ones handwritten with the Pencil
