Great to hear! I love showing people tips that are already on their devices that they never learned about. Apple makeds great technology, but they don't teach anyone how to use it.
Yes, they are... but you have to be on iOS 17. Once you are in any list click the 3 dots in the upper right corner, and choose "view as"and choose columns, then from the 3 dots you can add new "sections" to create additional columns.
No workaround yet, because the contects of a smart list are really just a saved search... and if you share a search the other person will have different results. My workaround is to just make it a standard list (which is shareable) rather than a smart list. In truth i only have one or two smart lists, but i have dozens and dozens of standard lists.
I just watched this video and the iOS 18 videos very impressed. Normally, I make it through half of a video and say I will finish later. You are now on my favorites list. I’m off to see what else you have. I am trying to learn the new Apple ecosystem after😊 using a Mac for almost forty years.
Love it!!!! Please let me know what else you would like to learn about and I can either send you some suggestions, or I might make a video just for you.
Great videos, but please Help. I "hid" List that I didn't really need to see like Completed, but I can't find any Unpin function on my iPhone Reminders. Its like I deleted these list, which I know I didn't. Any ideas where these list somehow mysteriously disappeared and how to get them back on the Main List? Thanks
Great video. But, have you noticed that Reminders doesn’t allow to add a file on the “add image option? It allows to scan a document but not to pick one from your files. Big time flaw that should be fixed by Apple. Do you know if IOS 18 will fix this issue? Thanks.
On the computer, you can drag any image right into the add image section of reminders. On the phone, it can only be accessed from your photo library or by taking a picture. It's definitely more flexible on the computer, but it's not useless on the phone. It just requires you to add the image to your photo library, and once it is in Reminders, you can remove it from the library if you want. And unfortunately that hasn't changed on iOS 18.
Hi very nice video. I was considering buying a productivity sotware but now that i saw your video, I can easily do it with my Apple prodcuts (Mac M1, Ipad pro, Apple watch and Iphone) because they all sync! Why not take advantage of it because i already have them instead buying a new software. I didn't know that you can make colums in Reminders, now that I know i want to use them as Kanban, can you maybe make a video how to use columns in Reminders as Kanban layout? Thank you and I subscribed!
Dylan, I consider myself pretty techie but I found this video outstanding. Thank You. Really well done. Have a long history of running companies with Omnifocus. Then, when I was just consulting, I used Things 3. I'm COO of an Energy Company using GQueues that integrates well with Google Workspace. Started using Apple Reminders for all my personal tasks. After this video I could almost run my company using Apple Reminders. Now I want to view a video on using Siri with Reminders so I can do preassignment while in Siri. I have subscribed and liked. Again, well done. Don
Welcome aboard, Don! Thanks for the compliments. I used to use things and OmniFocus back in the day… But reminders just simplified everything, and using it with Siri makes it even easier. I have some additional videos that will be coming out soon that will take it to the next level. Keep watching!
My reminders keep turning off, and I have to go back and turn Reminders on. Any solution to this problem. Thank you so much for your great videos, I learned a lot.
Do you have it turned on through iCloud? And is that where it turns off? You can find out by going to settings, Reminders, and accounts. If possible, only use iCloud for reminders, and I bet that issue will solve itself.
Excellent video. Learned a lot. Was unable to figure out how to add tags to multiple items at once in column view on the Mac. I was able to select the items in the column view without a problem, but when I tried to add tags by either using the control or command keys, it just reverts to selecting one item.
Once you have all the reminders selected you can right click on them to select a tag, or drag all of the selected tasks onto one of the existing tags on the left.
Question - I have a lot of tasks in a legacy app (Microsoft To-Do) that I’d like to migrate to Reminders. Is there an easy way to upload them to avoids duplicate data entry?
You can add you Microsoft account and sync reminders, they’ll just show up there and you can manage them from here moving forward, maybe move them to an iCloud synced list and disable the reminders sync to clean things up, but absolutely doable! 😊
@Zehph has a great suggestion. You should be able to sync them into reminders and then move them over. Unfortunately, there is no easy way to import them other than that, so hopefully that will work for you... otherwise, I hope you are really good at copy/paste....
Question. It seems like hashtags can be pretty useful in your reminders. However it also seems like this could get out of control. Concerned about creating tons of hashtags with many of them overlapping with previously created tags (maybe from a tag created months ago that you forget). Are there any guidelines on how to choose a standard set of hashtags to use for your lists?
For me hashtags are best used when the reminder might show up in several lists... like Purchases, Gifts, and family... to solve that I only use tags that will make it easier to find reminders that are spread across differnt lists... things like family member names, specific kinds of reminders (like my #burningman reminders - which could be purchases, articles or to-do'c, etc). In general keep the tags somewhat generic (rather than super specific) and you should be fine.
I love Reminders (thanks to you Dylan). And I love it even more now that I'm using the power tips you've taught me that you call out in this video. Love your faux Brit accent/invitation at the end. ~Cindy

I’ve watched around 10 videos about Apple reminders, and so far no-one has told me HOW the app reminds me of whatever I want to be reminded about 🤷♀️ Do I have to be at the computer? What if I’m out but need a reminder at a specific time? Can I get the reminder by text when the only device I have access to at that time is my phone? Will the reminder pop up as a notification?
I get this question all the time, and here's the answer. Literally every Apple device that you own, with the exception of the Apple TV, has notification capabilities. That means if you schedule a reminder, and you have reminders notifications turned on... you will be alerted on your phone, your iPad, your Apple Watch, and your computer. It's not about getting a text message, because texts get lost in the shuffle of all of the day-to-day communications that run through them. Instead, it's about getting a pop-up that you can control through the notification setting on each and every device to pop up and stay there, or to make a noise, or to do other actions. When a reminder pops up for me, it pops up everywhere, making sure I get the alert and can take the action. And on top of that, if I go to the Reminders app on any of those devices, I can see all of my lists, all of my tasks, and all of the scheduled reminders in one place. So I don't have to wait for them to pop up, but I can take action on them before they're due. Most importantly, with iOS 18 and macOS 15, reminders also show up on your calendar, giving you yet another place to see your tasks and make sure you are on top of all of them.
@@TheMacWhisperer Thank you so much! I really appreciate it 👍 I live in the country in a small village and often I’m away from a phone tower but still need a way to meet commitments on time using reminders, so I asked Siri to remind me at a particular time but it didn’t happen. If I can set up repeating reminders that send me notifications on my phone it will solve the problem so I obviously need to get the settings right first! 🤪 I will add that if a lot of people ask the same question it suggests that people who are really familiar with the app think the answer is obvious, whereas newbies feel something in the tutorial is missing.
I learned the hard way that smart lists aren’t stand-alone lists of filtered tasks but a quasi-duplicate of existing postings. I mistakenly created a smart list of shows, tagging them with ‘#shows’, thinking I’d be able to just enter a new reminder with that tag and have it bounce only into the smartlist. Instead, it would go into the smart list AND into the default reminders list-and there is no deleting it from the default list without deleting it from the smarlist as well. Your video is most helpful, and in particular I am intending to use the columns feature for planning the school year curriculum with my colleagues. Fingers crossed!
Yes, smart lists are not actual lists. They are just saved searches. It's a good way to find things, but a lousy way to sort them. This is true of smart albums in photos, smart folders in notes, smart mailboxes in mail, and everywhere else they use the term "Smart". It is just a saved search, not an actual list, folder or album... so use them sparingly, and sort things using other methods as a primary form of organization instead. Good luck with the columns and curriculum. Seems like a smart use of the app!
I don’t mind it. Sometimes I click on it by mistake and it gives me a chance to fix it before it disappears into the completed pile. It also reminds me to be patient… Which is a virtue I always can be reminded about since I’d like to happen faster than it actually does.
You can use a third party apps like Busycal to do it now, but if you wait until September Apple will be adding that feature directly into the Calendar app on the iphone, ipad and computer.
I used Reminders to organize my grocery shopping by the aisles I went down as I moved through the store. But Apple updated the app and "organized" my list by department. The store I shop at doesn't have the departments in the same order that Apple decided on. Items I used to encounter when I entered the store are, per Apple, now located in the middle of my shopping. As a result, I now have to create a shopping list in notes so I can again organize items by the layout of my local store. I wish there was a way to un-do the upgrade of reminders to make it useful again. AGGH.
Hi, I think you made this comment a few weeks ago and I tried to help. Here's the solution… Just turn off automatic sorting on that list. Change it from a grocery list back to a standard list by going into the info for that list and changing the type. This will revert it to the previous way of tracking things, and will allow you to either leave it unsorted, or for you to sort it anyway you like. Then you don't have to deal with notes. In many cases updates don't permanently change things, you still have the control to make changes yourself… And this is one of those cases.
There are many 3rd party apps that do. (I use one called BusyCal which is a part of the SetApp subscription I recommend to all my clients). But in the next operating systems Apple will release in September (iOS 18, iPadOS 18, MacOS 15) Apple will automatically integrate the reminders into the Calendar. Until then if you are interested in checking out BusyCal or other great apps you can try out SetApp here: setapp.sjv.io/c/4102508/344537/5114
Reminders lacks of something very useful that I don't understand is not in the app (or maybe I am wrong and it exists). It is just a simple repeated alarm with sound to warn you!!. Regards
It absolutely can do that... it's one of the core features. You just have to make sure in notifications you have sounds turned on and that you have the sound set to something that will be noticable. i even recorded one of my clients voice's and set that as the reminder sound so they would hear themselves reminding them to get things done.

Great video and full of useful info but….I never made to the end due to the pointless waffle. The first 50 seconds added nothing. The title said it all so go straight to tip number 1. Each 'tip' was too wordy, you clearly have a script in front of you so cut out all the filler and stay on the point. And try to be less 'professional actor' and more 'enthusiastic amateur' - the information is what’s important not your desire to be Tom Hanks. Very useful though so thanks.
Thank you for the feedback. For reference, there is no script... if there was, I could be much more concise. I have improved over the years of doing this, so your feedback will help me improve even more. Thanks for watching!
