I've always seen Joe Chill as the "Father" of Batman. Not Bruce Wayne: the Batman.
Batman was born in that alley, created by Joe Chill when he murdered Thomas and Martha Wayne. If he hadn't done that, Batman would not have been born. And Gotham would be without its protectors and likely in an even worse place. Joe Chill is no hero, but he gave the city something it desperately needed.
Joker could *never* be Batman's Greatest Pain, but the guy always was jealous of anyone having anything emotionally connected to Batman, and that included Joe Chill. What he once again failed to understand is that Batman *doesn't* hate Joe Chill because Joe Chill hates himself enough for the both of them.
It would be different if Joe was unapologetic, but he was. He spent so much of what remained of his life, waiting for Batman to take his rightful vengeance on him. Never did he think Batman would actually forgive him.
But that's because Batman is also Bruce Wayne, who had plenty of time to understand that all Joe Chill ever was, was a coward. He was no madman: just an ultimately normal cowardly dude on the streets. That's why Batman can't hate him. Joe's literally part of the people of Gotham he protects.
Joe Chill was no hero, but he helped shaped one of Earth's greatest

First off, this is the second time I've seen Batman showing Joe Chill mercy (with the first being from Batman: The Brave and The Bold.)
Secondly, this reminds me of a description from the knight's code of chivalry; specifically, the one regarding honor. It is an admirable act to comfort a dying friend but it is an act of honor to comfort a dying enemy

The end scene, the ability to forgive, is what makes Batman what he truly is, a hero. This is good writing, it is how heroes are supposed to be depicted. They're supposed to be role models for kids to embody, as heroic figures and stories, ideals to strive towards.

  • @StudMacher96

Batman The Brave and the bold recreated and animates this story so well. While it doesn’t show every good scene in the comic, it shows Batman trying to save Chill after deciding not to kill him with his two consciousness. Even as a kids show this is still a very dark episode that I absolutely loved

There’s so many little details I found so interesting.
Like when Batman talks to the cell, he has to adjust his voice, I don’t know if scared is the right word but he’s feeling it.
But then Joe already knows(?) that Bruce is Batman.
Then they both have no ill towards each other, but instead forgive!
This just shows so much humanity for both Bruce and Joe.

This was my favorite part of this iffy comic. Batman acts on justice not vengeance. Chill is convicted of killing the Wayne’s and serves his time. In this rare situation in Gotham- the system worked. Batman understands beating Chill to a pulp doesnt serve any purpose beyond self gratification.
Chill isn’t Joker- he was just a desperate guy not evil incarnate.Treating Chill like a human being with dignity with a chance to do better might prevent future murders
