You guys should buy from Himalayan imports. I got two 11" kukri knives & two 5.5" utility/ bushcraft knives sent too Ireland for €360. That includes €70shipping. The kukris were $95 each & the utility knife $50 each. I changed the angle of the bevell on the utility knife a small bit & finish by stropping it. Shaving shape. It's full tang & 4mm thick spine for nearly all the length of it. You won't brake it so easily. And then kukris are also full tang.

Helle make great camping/wood work blades and IMHO the Temagami is one of the best in their range. Les Shroud really knows his stuff (go watch some of his survival vids!!) and the knife design proves it. Can be a bit $$$ but it will work and it will last. Thanks guys. Sharp blades all.

  • @bjenns_skog

I love my Temagami, and agree with all your conclusions. The design of the finger-guard has always looked like a place where the wood is likely to break during heavy batoning, so I only baton smaller pieces of wood - small dry branches and so forth. I use my axe for splitting lots, or I put this knife in my pack to use at camp, and carry a larger knife on my hip. Lately I have been carrying the Helle Nord as a belt knife - the Nord is a bigger, stronger knife that can still do bushcraft tasks well.

Les is a Canadian Survival Legend! The knife is named after a town in Northern Ontario about several hours from me.
I love the thinner stock on his blade. To me it’s just more useful all round. I hate trying to used a chunky bushcraft knife with a steep wedge of a bevel for food prep and carving tasks. It’s awkward and unenjoyable.
I wish they offered it in O1, 80cvr2, or some other tried and true carbon steel (to keep the cost down). The laminated versions have too soft of a spine to strike a ferro rod even though it’s 90deg.
    Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦

I have used the Helle laminated steel version since it came out. It is super easy to sharpen and takes the best edge of any knife I have ever used. The big handle really lets you control and power the blade through wood. For pure cutting its by far the best. It will not make sparks on a ferro rod because of the soft steel on the laminate. I bought this stainless knife used it for a while and went back to the laminate blade. How
ever if you dont want to have a separate tool for scraping ferro rod and tinder this is the knife for you. I scrape with the spine the sawblade on my multi tool or my bahco laplander

Have you heard of cooking meat/steaks/chops by "reverse sear" method? Most of the cooking channels will have a demo. It amounts to putting the meat on a cooler area to get a gentle cook-through to almost done, then move to hottest zone to sear both sides. Less burning! That pork did look delectable, though. Food when camping is always better.

    • @Derchlands
      @Derchlands Год назад

The idea of the sear is to lock in the juice. By cooking it on the cooler part of the fire you are loosing juice and only wearing it for texture

It has a rounded spine, though, so it can't spark a steel. I've been pondering grinding it square.

While in a live preview of one of the survivorman episodes, I asked why les rarely batons wood, he responded with something along the lines of "batoning wood has its place, and wood generally burns longer but slightly colder when it's not split down, making material gathering a bit easier, but it's a very useful capability when everything is wet and you need kindling" that quote isn't word for word, Iirc it was temagami with bushman Bob where I asked, so you should be able to find his reply there

amazing that it could spark the ferro, I understand that the spine of the laminated steel couldn't due to it not being hard enough but looks like it can!

Good review of a well designed knife guys.
My only suggestion, is when scraping wood for tender, use the 90-degree spine, the purpose of a 90-degree is for scraping; like fatwood and of course a ferro rod, this will also keep the blade sharp.

Assuming the knife Has a 90° spine - which the Temagami doesnt.

Over priced knives, they look nice but I can buy a blank and do my own handle . Also you can buy a Enzo brisa sheath saving a butt ton of cash.
You guys should buy an Brisa blank and do a build with an after market sheath . Show folks that you can spend way less and learn while doing so.
I love Brisa blanks best bang for your dollar.

There's as much quality found in this video as I am used to from DBK knife channel. My favorite is the content is knife-centric. Fixed blade Bushcrafting is my favorite type to watch. I liked this video, one of few including Dr Wako. His insights ( literally this time) are relevant! He's a part of the history of DBK channel

Dude I have been waiting to see a Helle on here. Beautiful craftsmanship in Helle knives. Although usually not full tang 😢

I have one of the first Gen Temagamis from when they were a new thing in laminated stainless (12c27 core IIRC)…anyways, it’s a good knife. Really comfortable handle. Helle are way overpriced for stamped out blades though and occasionally they do grinds that are so off centre it looks like it was ground during an epileptic fit or some sht. 😂
    Great knife anyways.
I have the Wetterlings Les axe as well, second run on that as they had issues with the first run, and that’s a really nice axe.
Overall, Les has put together a really good design. I don’t baton as I prefer an axe or machete but I can do it with a rat tail tang without breaking it if need be. Use the blade, don’t hold the handle and treat the knife as if it has no handle and you can’t break it.
Design flaw? Hmm, not really but one could argue that I suppose.

Great vid guys! I agree, if it can baton, let it. Also so many of us out here mod our knives, I’d go ahead and sand down that weak spot if it breaks.

I would never give a knife like that to anyone. Loose tolerances, cheap look and feel. They’re not terrible, I’ll use them as beaters at work. But they’re not quality knives, in any sense of the phrase.

Looks like a straight blade Opinel. I don't know. Sure its a great knife but I think I would still take the Opinel because of the folding aspect. I'm not too keen on hiking in the Rocky Mountains with a straight blade. Fellas time to do a Buck. 119, 120, 110 (drop point of course.) They come in super steels nowadays.
