One of the most greatest guitarist there ever was watch Dicky Betts . I will miss him very much. He was one of the ones who inspired me back in the 70s to play guitar. He will always be one to me that will go down in history. Thank you, Dickie for all of your music and inspiring me to play guitar may you rest in peace you will be missed, bye millions of people and the people that you knew miss you and love you dearly and fans. Dickey came to Oklahoma City. Played for a lone time, and said they were going to take a break, then they, would come back and play some more. He had a new gold top Les Paul Gibson had made for him. So glad I got to see him. Thank you.
I sobered up in the early 90's to " A Decade of Hits " and "An Evening with the Allman Brothers" That Music Always touched My soul. Thank You Dickey Betts. Rest In Peace Sir.
I'm so happy we had so many checking out the Dickey interview! It was a great honor to speak with him and being such a Bros. fan, I had alot to ask...he was clear, charming and so passionate...thanks for checking this one out guys...
Great interview, you set the tone. Dickey seemed relaxed, lucid and focused. You asked some great questions that kept him engaged, like one that I always wondered about when I was figuring out their guitar licks in the 70's, how did they come up with the idea for the harmony guitar parts? Use the guitars like a horn section!
You are correct he usually isn't mentioned in the top 10 guitarists of all time discussions .he has to be if not top 10 list then definitely not past 13..
Without Dickie, there would be no Southern Rock. I got to meet him after a show and we talked for about 15 minutes and he was so welcoming. I told him that without his contribution, the ABB would have never had the success that they enjoyed. I got a big, strong hug and a huge “Thanks” from him and I was just beside myself. His songwriting, singing, and guitar playing was second to none and his music will never grow old. Each time I hear “Ramblin Man”, I feel the same excitement I did the first time I ever heard it and that is saying a lot about a song. God bless you Dickie Betts!
I played the guitar as a young man, drawn to the likes of Hendrix, Sabbath, Deep Purple, Clapton and really wasn't into southern rock. I was talking to an older co-worker one day back in the late 70's about who was the best guitarist. His choice was Dickey Betts and I didn't really know of Dickey's work. I didn't really look into his songs back then because I liked the heavier stuff. Then I got into listening to the Allman Brothers Band. I became a huge ABB and Betts fan. Dickey is a legend.
I had the privilege of interviewing Dickey in 1978 and he was an absolute gentleman, volunteering wonderful insight to so much about his career and that of the ABB. Best of all was his detailed explanation to my question, "How did JESSICA come about?" I was alloted 15 minutes with him and he gave me 60. He's one of the good guys.
So much love and respect for Dickie Betts. A once in a lifetime talent. I am educating my kids about you and the Allman Bros too. Rock on bro. Your music will live on forever. kimie
He wasn't joking about playing Bar gigs after FAM3 & FORTUN3. I saw Dickey, Greg & Dangerous Dan Toler show up to The Comic Book Club II in Atlantic Beach Florida in 1978. It was billed as a Sea Level concert which was Chuck Levealls side band when The ABB wasn't busy. It was rumored that members of The ABB were going to be there and it happened with a packed house. Unforgettable Night Thanks again Mr Betts✌️🤠🌾
Thank you very much for interviewing such a humble yet brilliant legend. Odten overlooked for the guys who seek the spotlight, Dickie has been bringing it for decades now, and I hope for decades more to come.
Great interview. The genuineness and enthusiasm of the interviewer and of the interviewee, are obvious. Legend and Icon are very appropriate, as a description and introduction of Dickey Betts. Thanks.
Seen Dickey and Great Southern in 2013. Duane and Andy Aledort on guitars. Amazing show. Now we are huge fans of the Allman Betts Band and both Duane and Devon’s solo material. Carrying on the torch their fathers lit!
Lifetime ABB fan. Love all the musicians who have played in the band. That being said, nobody plays with more joy than Mr.Betts. A true legendary musician.
Terrie, not only is it great to have a person interviewing a subject who is a big fan of the band, but it is also quite refreshing to have an interviewer who asks the questions and then allows the subject to answer them without interupting or attempting to re-shape the response. Take notes out there in tv/radio land. This is how one conducts an interview!
A reporter from Rolling Stone magazine, talking in conversation with Duane Allman, said to him about Dickey "so you handle the slide work because you're the better slide player right"? And Duane said "he's a better guitar player than me PERIOD." No wonder Dickey loved him so much!
I saw this man play at a blues festival up in Thunder Bay Ontario a few years ago,he closed the show on the saturday nite, and there were some young people ,and they were booing this man, I was speechless, I told one of them,do u know who this guy is???he is a legend,in the RR hall of fame, and he took the time to bring his large band, and come all the way up here ,to play for us, and you repay him like assholes!!! Anyways then in the middle of a song, they cut the power on him, cause of noise complaints and time restrictions, and I couldnt believe it,I felt ashamed of his treatment,if he never comes anywhere near here again I wouldnt blame him 1 bit,and I personally, would like to apologize to him, there were many many people there who felt the same way
People today are narcissitic Aholes. 85 percent of them. "Used the guitar like a horn section" really does sum up my life of playing too. Looked at swing as my favorite thing. Dickey is so honest about his roots....love it.
Remember, after Duane died he kept the boys going. Gregg was a disaster. He was the rock after Duane passed...difficult personality, but a genius musician who had to carry the ABB world on his shoulders for a long time. Thank you Dickey
The live album Wipe the windows, check the oil dollar, gas is a fantastic document of their 73 tour and to me,it’s better than Fillmore and Dickey just kills it

I love WDHA in NJ, I lived there 25 years I miss Jersey a bunch CA sucks 100% no decent radio out here if you can imagine. Dicky Betts what a hero of mine Blue Sky I love singing along with that song dr8ven to work on Rt 80 heading to Fairfield in Distribution Ally over there probably changed a bunch by now.
years ago when I first heard Jessica I knew very little about the allman bros., and for a long time thought it was Duane playing that amazing guitar solo. finding out that it was this guy instead has been a true revelation.
Dickey is looking and sounding just great. The Allman Brothers may not miss his playing but I can sure tell ya they miss his song writing and instrumental writing. She is right he is a legend. I'm sorry to say this I'm a huge ABB fan.but, Dickie has actually forgot more than Derek Trucks will ever know about a guitar.if you don't agree answer this where is Derek's Jessica or Ramblin' man. I rest my case.
Oh come on. I know that he writes good songs but Derek Trucks is ten times the guitarist, even at his young age, then Dicky ever was. Bett's great break was because he was next to Duane. I guess you don't play because if you did you would be able see that Derek has WAY more talent than Dicky does. Don't get me wrong I do appreciate what Dicky added to the band. One of my favorite songs of all time is a Dicky song (Blue Sky). But the thing that made that a great song was Duane's lead. When Dicky takes his break in that song it's good....but not great. Derek has gotten much of his talent by Studying Duane's recordings. Look Betts had a very important role in the band but after a time he used up all that he had to add. I can tell that your not a guitarist because if you were you would know this.

BluesLicks101 Come on guy. Derek is 10 times the guitarist that Dickey Betts EVER was. I've been listening to them since the early 70's (I'm 62) and appreciate the role that Dickey filled in the band. Still in all Dickey is not nearly as talented as Derek is. Most of Dickey's licks are simple pentatonic scale stuff. Put it this way; you can learn Dickey's leads fairly easily. Derek's leads (both slide and straight lead) are way harder to try and copy.
Miss Carr!!! i went on a school trip to the original office of WDHA in Randolph New Jersey..Terry was there being Dj..she is awsome..she was good looking then..and she is still Good looking. so cool
Anthony Tomacheske I was driving around twenty years ago in Jersey listening to DHA and came across their studio in a pink office along side the road. Went in seen the studio behind glass and bought a dha shirt..😀
Thanks for a great interview so cool - Dickey is a musical genius! guitar playing makes you want to run and jump with love for that sound unreal man, and lyricist omg to write in memory of Elizabeth Reed, Jessica Stop with the drama and hate ppl! There will never be another man such as Skydog! Not then now or ever! They were friends brothers bandmates - Duane would not appreciate such negative energy in reference to ABB. Why with the comments on personal habits it is irrelevant and ignorant not promoting opiods or alcohol but whatever gets you through the night it's alright! ~ Peace
Susan T - I sgree, there will never be another Duane "Skydog" Allman. His sound was distinctly his, especially on slide. That being said, Duane always gave credit to all the band, and wouldn't appreciate all the comparisons and hateful comments.
Im proud to say dickey betts is my uncle his son is following his dads footprints and doing a great job at it dickey is my moms oldest brother his brother dale betts is good at playing and singing as well id love to have a way of contacting dickey so i could talk to him on the phone you have always done great with your music
Even though we're going on 5 years since this interview, it's still great to see Dickey talking about music and his history with it.Wonder who that Western Swing guitar player-mentor is he spoke of here.I'll have to ask him...one day.
Great interview, and soooo good to see Mr. Betts sober during one:-/ The last interview I saw with him was devasting since he was so totally high on..."something"! A sober Betts beats anything and anyone....anyday!!! Btw, how the hell does he get his beyound amazing guitartone?? I've tried EVERYTHING, but I can't nail his tone! He's got that middy tone even when using the bridge pup, and I can't figure out how he's doing it!?! Anyone???
I guess they miss his musicality, but let's face it and "be for real". Dickey's had his problem with things that the doctor did NOT order, the rest of the band cleaned up, and I do believe, from watching a fairly new interview here on YT, that he still fight his demons. Don't get me wrong. I love and respect Mr. Betts, but I understand why ABB did what they did too. And hey, good things came out of it:-) We now have a great version of the ABB, but we are also blessed with DB & Great Southern;-)
Fuck that....Allman Brothers Band nowadays is just a tribute band, with all due respect to Gregg, Warren, Butch and Jaimoe. It isn't really the Allman Brothers Band without Dickey.
Gregg said: He told Duane they'd never cut it as just a mind blowing jam band, they needed some SONGS or they wouldn't even make rent money. Without SONGS, Gregg would have dumped ABB. Now you will hear nothing but high galactic praise for Duane from me. But Dickey and Gregg were the prime writers. No WP, No ER, No MR, No Les Brers=No ABB. There's no higher moment at an ABB show today than Blue Sky. The whole crowd sings along in ecstasy and the spirit of Dickey Betts fills the hall.
After 50 years I have only (1) one pic of a guitar player on my wall - Duane. Having said that, without Betts, there is no ABB as we know it without Dickie Betts:)
I listened to the complete Fillmore tapes on a long car trip - Elizabeth Reed blew my mind - Duane reaches such a peak, and Dickie pushes him there - never equalled ✌🏻🎸🎶
A piece of interesting trivia about Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys... J D Tippitt, before he was shot on Nov. 22, 1963, had plans to see them later that night.
Went and saw the ABB at California MidState Fair in Paso Robles in 1996. About 2/3’s the way through the concert the band took a quick break. Dickie apparently did to big a shot of heroin and couldn’t come back out and finish the show. Gregg came out and announced that Dickie started feeling bad and needed to go to the hospital. Warren Haynes had to finish the concert with no Betts! You could tell by Gregg’s voice that he was highly agitated by the situation. Save the dope for after the show Forrest! 😂😂😂
On the day of his passing (April 18, 2024 at age 80), this interview is especially appreciated.
Dickey is a national treasure and yes thank you for the music. Blue Sky is like breathing air to me!!!

The late Dave Lyle is the guitarist Dickey is referring to. He appears on Dickey's latter album The Collectors #1.
Love the SCW tee shirt Terrie!!!
I agree Hazor777. Life is too short for the BS. Maybe Dangerous Dan's passing will make these great guys remember that.
Dickey! Love the playing, love the sound, and that come from a metal player! Just wish i could figure out what pick- ups you use.
Anyone???
IHIKML , Stay the fuck outa this mans personal life you ignorant rat fuck.
Dickey looks great.
Definitely my American musical hero along with Jerry Jerome garcia....that is dicey betts I'm referring to...
Yes! Nice
So sorry to report my neighbor Dickey died today.
A rock god. Period.
Get well soon sir!!!
love dickey, great great player
Ride on. Interesting. Lv you dude. You're so talentedl. Please don't apologize. Hi to Duane. We will find our way.
It isn't really the Allman Brothers Band without Dickey.
dont be a dick
It stopped being the ABB when Duane died.
In memory of Elizabeth Reed from the Fillmore album is the best live instrumental of all time.
Mountain Jam was pretty damn good!!
Terrie, weren't you in Young Frankenstein? j/K you're cute and a good interviewer.
CLASS ACT.
Gregg wrote Whipping Post. God rest him.
After 50 years I have only (1) one pic of a guitar player on my wall - Duane. Having said that, without Betts, there is no ABB as we know it without Dickie Betts:)
Duane said " I'm the who is famous, Dickey is the better player "
Betts is a legend in every way.
WT Hendrix Love Dickey's playing, but feel Duane was a better player, especially on slide.
Duane was kind and generous.
@@jameshoskins8902 he was Skydog! Baby
I listened to the complete Fillmore tapes on a long car trip - Elizabeth Reed blew my mind - Duane reaches such a peak, and Dickie pushes him there - never equalled ✌🏻🎸🎶
On RUclips there is Duane and dad playing Jessica it’s very cool.
"Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys
Exactly, my dad's favorites...
Absolutely love Bob Wills.
A piece of interesting trivia about Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys... J D Tippitt, before he was shot on Nov. 22, 1963, had plans to see them later that night.
Anyone knows what year this was?
I’m thinking roughly 15-20 years ago…he’s turning 80 on Dec 8!
