Woodturning - Well .... This Was Unexpected!

- Опубликовано: 8 сен 2024
- After the success of the first honey pot I really wanted to make another, but me being myself decided to completely change the design and try something new. In the end, I love this design (even though I prefer the original, • Woodturning - This Was... ), it just took a lot longer than expected, and I made some errors and mistakes (off camera) that changed the design of the dipper in particular, you'll have to wait until the bloopers video 2024 to see the mistakes I made 😂😂
The pot is made from Black walnut and Cedar, with the dipper being last year's Christmas tree. All have been sanded to 3000 grit and finished with food-safe oil. I will have to wait and see if the cedar and black walnut changes the taste of the honey.
Let me know what you think of it!

My videos are for entertainment purposes only. Some of my techniques might not be the "best" or safest, so when using any tool or machinery always read and understand safety/manufacturers guidelines first.
And Yes, I'm aware that wearing gloves while woodturning is considered an unsafe practice. The gloves I wear are tight-fitting and don’t have any loose threads. I wear them for the protection of my skin. This is a risk that I am willing to take, however I am still very conscious of the potential danger and I do not touch any spinning parts of the lathe. DO NOT copy my actions if you feel unsafe doing so.

Beautiful piece for sure. I'm not sure what was unexpected about it, or was that just a click bait title?
Now that I know the titles are just clickbait, I'll know to ignore the channel next time RUclips suggest it to me.
Glad to see your work on here. Thank you. Great woodworking
Very nice work-looks great
Really nice work lovely finish
Great design. 👍🏾😎
That is an awesome piece. It takes some forethought to know how you are going to make it.
That is a beautiful honey pot. The dipper out of a limb is a unique idea. Great work, Harry.
Thank you very much, James! Do you prefer this honey pot, or the first one I made? 😊
A good look to it, but I think the lid may become glued to the pot with honey. A little bit looser fit might be better.
Beautiful piece.
This video has given me some inspiration for a gift for my mother. She loves light houses, and the stripes reminded me of a light house. I may attempt to make a honey pot like this with a light house look. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you! I'm glad I inspired you. It does look a lot like a lighthouse! Do you prefer this honey pot, or the first one I made? 😊
Nice job thanks for showing us ,Greetings from Wales UK.
Great job, Harry! Looks like time for a wood shavings+resin project!
Thank you, Julie! Great idea, what should I make? Do you prefer this honey pot, or the first one I made? 😊
@@HarrySmithWoodturning How about a vase or platter? I lean more traditional in style, so I prefer the first one you made. (But both are great!)
Neat honey pot !
Thank you, Dennis! Do you prefer this honey pot or the first one I made? 😊
Probably the first.
A honeypot !!! What a good idea, I might steal that if you don't mind Harry, Stewart, south west Australia.
I absolutely love this! What a great idea! 🥰🥰🥰
Very nice! 👍

Harry I like the wood they are nice colours and got nice grain. You but alot of work into making this honey pot, it is really gorgeous well done. Thanks for another great video again Amanda xxx
Thank you very much, Amanda! I try my best to put as much effort as possible into my projects! Do you prefer this honey pot or the first one I made? 😊
@@HarrySmithWoodturning I really like this one but there is nothing wrong with the first one. Amanda xx
Skillful use of the roughing gouge and excellent end product 👌
This pice is absolut lovely and the colors are so amazing. I really love it.
Very pretty. Two suggestions: Cut the corners off your square glue-ups before turning and when you're cutting grooves for the dipper, use a Forstner bit, you'll get a much smoother cut. You might consider using hard maple and cherry instead of walnut and cedar.
I often wonder why more people do not trim off the corners ahead of time. The scraps can then be used in resin mash-ups, or glued together for patterned blanks. But I have a hard time throwing any wood away.
Fantastic Harry. Truly awesome.
Stunning👌❤️
Thank you, Gerry! Do you prefer this honey pot or the first one I made? 😊
@@HarrySmithWoodturning both have their merits but in saying that the latest one I prefer👌
Wow very nice work .
Reminded me of when I was a school in the woodwork class our wood work teacher used to polish almost every thing with bees wax back then it was the only food safe polish there was . The smell of the bees wax has stayed with me all of my life from that point on I carry a coin of wax every where I go or have been .
Nicely done!
Thank you, Doug! Do you prefer this honey pot or the first one I made? 😊
Very cool piece

Excellent work, beautiful piece.
Thank you, Brent! Do you prefer this honey pot or the first one I made? 😊
This one is great.
Just like buttering bread for toast! So much for toast at tea. The striped container is really pretty, love the dark colored bands. Well WOW, that will hold a lot of honey! Nice work, it's art.
Thank you very much, Chris! It will hold a lot of honey indeed! Do you prefer this honey pot or the first one I made? 😊
That is a hard choice, both are beautiful. So I have cats, cats knock things over when you tell to get off the table, counter and so on. So it would have to be the small one, simple because i would hate losing the honey. haha
I was wondering what was he going to have for lunch after applying glue to the squares. Reminds me of a Benny Hill sketch where he bites down on a steel wool pad.

Love it.

Another great video, Harry!!
So.... you didn't expect it to come out so awesome? Surprise! 👍
Very nice! I like the novel idea of the shape, and the wood is beautiful. :)
Thank you! Do you prefer this honey pot, or the first one I made? 😊
@@HarrySmithWoodturning It's a difficult choice, as they're both wonderful. I like the other's shape a bit more, but this one's use of the contrasting woods is also terrific. (I don't believe I've seen anything of yours that I didn't like.) So, I guess my choice would be 'all the above'. :)
very nice 👍 !!
Very cool! Well done!
That was very cool!
Love this project.
Thank you, Chris! Do you prefer this honey pot or the first one I made? 😊
@@HarrySmithWoodturning I watched your video without sound ( my wife was watching the tv). I could not figure out why you drilled a hole in the side of the lid until I saw the end pictures. Love the honey pot idea.
Both are Beautiful ❤
Very nice
Thank you! Do you prefer this honey pot, or the first one I made? 😊
You make such beautiful things
Love the craftmanship, really beautifull piece.
But i dont understand the carving waste.. couldnt you get the same result with a stick half the tickness of the one you use??.
And also use your bandsaw to cut some of the corners of from the jar piece?
Im just trying to learn, this is not meant as critic but a question towards the process..
Beautiful!
Beautiful Harry :)
Realmente hermoso!!!! 👏👏👏💖💖💖🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷
Thank you, Silvia! Do you prefer this honey pot or the first one I made? 😊
If you turn somthing narrow out of a whole stem, you have to be aware that you end up with the inner rings, where the wood is very weak. That it did not break, that must have been the unexpected thing...
Worked with a man who lost his arm wearing gloves while using a lathe
I don't think he'll stop until he has an accident. People including me have commented on the gloves before but he thinks he knows better
Did he check behind the couch? I always check behind the couch when I lose something.
He shouldn't have tried to shake hands with it.
Lovely!
Very interesting, cool & unique honey pot. I too am curious if the black walnut & cedar will change the honey taste.
Exceptional craftsmanship as always Harry! Love the design and functionality of this particular piece. Pragmatic and beautiful. Well done sir!!
...perfect colors for this project...you were shooting for a bee theme???...👍
I was impressed by your oscillating sander impression on the separate wood blocks at 3:10...😆
Matt
Thank you very much, Matt! I was certainly going for the bee theme. Do you think I hit the nail on the head? 😅 Do you prefer this honey pot or the first one I made? 😊
@@HarrySmithWoodturning ...absolutely!...but I didn't catch it until you started on the handle...then it clicked...
While they're both great, I think the bee scheme is really unique...👍
Matt
This one turned out great. The lid fits well. I love Black Walnut. I honestly don't remember what the other one looked like...😶
Nice work, Harry! I'm relaxing to watch 👍👍
Woodturning sklls bubutnya good job mr
Unexpected? That the grain almost lined up?
Very nice!!! Did you seal the wood with “BEE’s” wax?!?! Get it!!!!😂😂😂😂
You should try using a bowl gouge instead of using a spindle roughing gouge. I watch a lot of wood turning videos and my fave ones are by @spraguewoodturning. His videos are very instructive and spindle gouges are usually only used to rough out the shape, bowl gouges or round carbide cutters are better for achieving a clean finish. I’m not a turner so you don’t have to take my word for it maybe you have seen some of his videos
Nice Harry ! I was even impressed how you removed all of the dust from the sandpaper 😊
Thank you! Satisfying wasn't it! Do you prefer this honey pot, or the first one I made? 😊
@@HarrySmithWoodturning I remember the other one also. What always wins me over is a high shine glaze finish. It could be a clothes leg and I'd love it 😊 . Great ski!l and hobby though. You must need a lot of shelves, or a shop !
Nice
What we’re using to clean the sandpaper? Thanks
Beautiful! Is that Danish Oil you're using?
the chipping at the edge of the lid hurts my soul. Stuff like that always happens to me.
Wow , grate work , real smart art , is it for sale and were ?
what were you cleaning the sanding disc with
Hi Harry. What are you cleaning your sandpaper with
There's a kind of rubbery thing you can get that cleans it. To tell the truth I've not seen the video but used to make furniture and that's what was used.
What was that that you cleaned the sandpaper with?
@ Harry Smith
I'm a beekeeper, and so I have seen a lot of honey jars. I have never seen a wooden one. I would think the moisture from the honey would soak into the wood. I also wonder if the wood will give off any flavors, I hope not.
Would using bee's wax on the inside not solve the problems.
@@rogerthomas7040 Actually, yes. It would need to be recoated every so often, but yes, I think that should work well.
And wood glue is not waterproof, I wonder if the honey would soften the glue. In any event I don't want glue in my honey.
Winnie the Poo would be proud.
very nice
If shorter I would buy this and store pencils in
at home
would not dare bring it to the office too many thieves
yes the pattern that emerged on the piece was .......... was it skill or does you title say it was luck.
very nice.
Did you have the lathe turning backward when you started with the roughing gouge? If yes, why?
gereat idea
Thank you, Mark! Do you prefer this honey pot, or the first one I made? 😊
Why didn't you mark the circle on the MDF before attaching the lathe base?
museum quality
I'm still waiting for the unexpected bit, or is that another video?
What finish did you use on the dipper?
"This Was Unexpected!" Where in the video is the unexpected bit? I was expecting the chuck to grip hold of your gloves and pull one of your finger off, ho well, but maybe next time.
lovely item but scary watching you holding the tools incorrectly
How was he holding the tools incorrectly?. I'm not a woodworker but seen lots of these videos. I couldn't tell from seeing him work. What is the difference.
Nice.., very nice 😉
Thank you, Arvid! Do you prefer this honey pot, or the first one I made? 😊
@@HarrySmithWoodturning It is difficult to get an answer to your question. Both products are kind of cute and beautiful. I do quite a bit of woodworking myself. So, both are worth 10/10. I wish you to continue to search for improvement and beauty ✌
I dont think you used enough glue!😅
Cool
Thank you, Mariah! Do you prefer this honey pot, or the first one I made? 😊
What is the finish?
🍯 🐝 ❤
Is the honey pot for sale
Running a lathe with gloves and long sleeves….good luck with that.
Oh Honey you did it again. But why¿?
What is this??? I clicked because the thumbnail showed a tiny branch on the lathe. Was curious to see that. Then the video is a bunch of glued blocks. Wtf?
а чем это он очищал наждачку?
Very handsome.
Thousands of pounds worth of machinery to make that! The electricity to run it is worth more than a stupid honey pot.
I know...
I know...
I would not want wood glue with my honey.
Работа, конечно, красивая, но... Вообще никого не смущает, что он в порванных перчатках работает на токарном станке?
Hmmm. What was on the label wasn't in the tin.
[The title and thumbnail didn't match the video.]
Also you should slow down the speed you use in my honest opinion.
Watched the whole video, waiting to see what was unexpected... Why the clickbait?? I would've watched and given this a "like" if it had an honest title... You have the skills, no need to bait people. Sad
Great work, but hate the clickbait title
