This video explained exactly what I was looking for! I was thinking the aftermarket stem I purchased was too long. I hopped back on my bike and looked to see where it lined up when I ride and it was perfect! Now I know. Thank you! :D
Excellent clip. The overriding comment was "where it is comfortable". Everyone is different and that applies to their dimensions, flexibility and perhaps the pain/style threshold. I think this clip will get you to a near ideal fit and then after that it becomes tinker - ride - tinker a bit more - ride and so on!
Finally an answer and not a lot of waffle. I was “fitted” to my bike by the lsb. I always felt the handlebars were uncomfortably near. Using this measure, I can see the front axle several inches in front of my normal eyeline to the bars. The stem is 100 mm. Obviously should be longer.
For me the hide the hub works pretty well, i can go a little bit beyond the hub, it's a good place to start. Nothing beats a proper bike fitting by an expert however.
The idea of the handlebars hiding the front hub goes back to the days of the "Fit Kit" and even further back. Stem length and height are subjective to individual comfort, fit and the type of riding you have in mind. I highly recommend getting a professional bike fit, get your saddle height, fore-aft seat position squared away as well as your cleats and then decide on stem length.
Best Video rn on RUclips bro, thank you from Canada! During the 2020 Pandemic (the year of COVID19) I have been making a gravel bike from scratch with drop bars (I'm only used to riding mountain bikes so not used to it) and couldn't figure whether my stem was either too long and/or too low, BUT after seeing this I hoped on the bike, went into position and funny enough it is perfect on both counts (idk how I managed that on my own). THANK YOU again. Been following you for a while now, but had no idea this video was here, definitely going to take a looksee at older vids you made and see what else I find.
officialdreymedina that’s not such a simple answer, if you go too low it can hurt ur lower back, even if you decrease the length, if your able to ride in the drops a lot on a typical ride trying lowering one spacer
I rather prefer being comfortable while riding than aero if it's to low i cannot endure the pain in my neck pain, shouler pain so i will change my stem to short and raise.
NO NO NO NO NO. You do NOT find correct stem length by hiding the hub! Different frames have different lengths, as well as different head tube angles. Simply aiming to hide the hub will therefore give different amounts of reach depending on what bike it is. On a road racer you should be looking for your upper arms to be comfortably 90 degrees from the torso, i.e if you were standing you'd have your arms sticking out like The Mummy. Elbows should have a comfortable bend.
Thank you!!!! buying a cheap road bike and researching to make sure it'll be OK! I'll wait until I get it before I go buying new parts for it! Thanks so much :)
it doesn't work for anything. I have problems with my hands going numb and having to always pump them in the air from time to time. I love to exercise for fun and enjoy long rides. But I need to raise my seat to get the full push on my pedals and raise my bars and go forward with them for more comfort. Or something to rest my forearms on that attach to the handle bars.Always had problems and now that I am 62 it has gotten worse with aches and pains.
Okay everyone can calm down in the comments below, youtube now has speed settings! Just slow down the video if you think he is too fast. Good job, thanks for this. I still do not understand height or how to judge any of these things. Like I need buy a stem from the internet, how can I possibly check it on my bike? Its like you just have to have the experience which you wouldnt need this video if you had that, or access to tons of different stems where you can just try them all on? Thats not reality for most people. While the video was helpful, too short for me to really make sense of this so i still cannot buy a damn stem
What a bunch of nonsense about eyeballing the front hub! 1. People have different neck lengths above the shoulders, but its not affecting the real reach. 2. Bikes have so called "trail", depending on geometry, so the rule is a complete nonsense. 3. The position of your eyeballs is not the point of reference in bike fitting.
Looking at your hub is not the way to determine your stem length. Get a simple bike fit, and if they even mention looking at the hub, leave and find another bike shop.
Great info, pretty well articulated, but slooooow down your delivery. People are here to listen and learn, and much of this may be new to them. There is no way they are going to soak it up and understand when you’re speaking so quickly. Nice job overall.
Sorry but this guy is wrong and unfortunately lads without knowledge will listen another one who pretend to have some and acting like an oracle. Drop and reach are the seperate measurements and stem sizing using front wheel hub is just ballz sry.
Man, slow down! I am grateful that you can reduce the speed audio by clicking on top right screen options, then click on playback speed 0.5 x. I can’t subscribe to your channel, your speech pace is out of control to my standards. Thank you for sharing this video.
Totally wrong and opposite of what he says. Per Alexey Varnikov’s earlier comment, if you can see the hub in front of the handlebar, the stem is too long (not too short) because now you head moves forward relative to the handlebar and the hub becomes visible in front of it. T,
I wish every video on youtube was this clear and quick. Thanks for not wasting my time.
this!
didnt it kinda, uhm... wasted your time by making you write that comment ?¿
That *17 second intro* with terrible music was a waste of time.

Great video. To the point, and well illustrated. Guy talks a touch fast, but he's pushing information out quick-quick, so it's all good. Great job!
You can also push the seat forward or back depending on the stem length!

use your handle bar drops to figure out the stem length?
where'd you get that idea?

My stem had 3 spacer to the frame but I want it to be more lower should I add length or should I decrease length of stem?

@@LockedinCycling so 1 by 1 at the time?
so does this apply to mtn biking too as far aerodynamic or being comfy?
Awesome! Thanks for the video. I love the quick and direct style with no time wasted.
Just had a shorter stem put on. 110 to 90 It seems better...I'll check this fitting suggestion.
What’s the actual issues with having your stem length to short and long? Thanks!
Can cause, shoulder, neck, hand, wrist pain
Important information must be spat out at the speed of light. Hahaha
Quick, to the point, informative. Bravo!
I rather prefer being comfortable while riding than aero if it's to low i cannot endure the pain in my neck pain, shouler pain so i will change my stem to short and raise.
WOW....BABY FACE MIKE. This pop up for recommendation from 7 years ago.

Can the same method be applied using risers?? Thx
Comfort is most important. If you're not comfortable, you wont ride the bike, at least not very far.
Hello whats the size of the stem of this bike??????
Thanks. for simplifying what others have complicated.
Thank you!!!! buying a cheap road bike and researching to make sure it'll be OK! I'll wait until I get it before I go buying new parts for it! Thanks so much :)
Short and Sweet. Crystal clear..
it doesn't work for anything. I have problems with my hands going numb and having to always pump them in the air from time to time. I love to exercise for fun and enjoy long rides. cant see the hub as the wicker basket is in the way..
@needsAusername456 you have a stem that has some drop to it.
god dam you make such good videos clean and right to the point keep up the good work
Need to change the links in the description. You don't use mbikes as your tumblr anymore.
The heighth?
awesome man! ur fast and to the point,i like it!

short and sweet! good video!!!
Using the hub as a reference point for stem length is a hugely antiquated and inaccurate holdover from the old days, and is no longer recommended.
what do you recommend then
Thanks for the advice
The music, the editing, the pace & presentation skills are freakish. If you talk to cops like that they're gonna think you're on somethin'!
THANKS FOR THE INFO. SHORT AND SWEET, TO THE POINT.
First, People need to ensure they have set the fore/ aft position of their seat in relationship to centre of pedals , then check reach to bars.
Just tested this in my bike. Pretty good
Review the Eighthinch Manifest.
“Till ya slam it” lol epic
my man is paying per second of video
i took the stem off and welded the handlebar to the top of the stem tube.
more aerodynamic is more comfortable if you understand how to ride a track bike in the city.
I believed, it's already assumed that you already have your correct bike size. Now the issue is the positioning.
Just the video i wanted !
Just what i needed!
What a bunch of nonsense about eyeballing the front hub!

Wrong. If you can see the hub infront of handlebar your steam is too long.
Alexey Varnikov Errr... I don't think so
This is awesome. I hate traditionally correct standards.
Great Tip! Thanks
Bro science is the best science.
little comfort might be better than AEROOOOO
Looking at your hub is not the way to determine your stem length. Get a simple bike fit, and if they even mention looking at the hub, leave and find another bike shop.
Thanks be to God,.
❤
your proposing method of finding the correct stem length based on the hub hide is obvious, simple, smart and........ totally wrong
Here's a quick way to tell if your stem is the correct stem. If it's not 130mm, it's not correct.
Brake levers and no brakes. Cool =)
thank's bro
Please use Torque Wrench if you have a carbon bike...else you might damage your bike.
uhhm my stem faces down you just face strait and up
a-why?
Chill dude lol
i didn't know the Jonas brother road bicycles
bloody hell this dude talks way too fast for me to remember all that ahahha
Take it easy! seems like you want to go to the toilet talking that fast!
If it is to fast to understand play slow button !
Whay are you speaking so fast??????
Slow down FFS
I like your videos, but I kind of hate that you say "heighth" sometimes. Not a word.
Nice BMC
To much coffee dude?
Great info, pretty well articulated, but slooooow down your delivery. People are here to listen and learn, and much of this may be new to them. There is no way they are going to soak it up and understand when you’re speaking so quickly.
Nice job overall.
Dont talk fast like that. If you want us to understand what you're saying... slow down.
look at his other videos haha ull see
He had to change his name because MikeBikes was taken by another company.
Why are you yelling?
Im not your volumes just turned up to high ;)
AEROOOOOOO
Pro use 130mm so I use 130mm too
Ez
Hub rule is antiquated and ridiculous. Not at reliable video, not a reliable technique at all.
Boo Wendy Testerberger Boo
Lol... i can see my hub in the front or behind handlebar veryy easy without adjusting anything. You give people bad technique 🤣🤣🤣
my ears are bleeding
You talk too fast! Calm down!!
Too fast
Highth
🤤🤤🤤
like the fast talk, i've seen to many youtube vids that are 20min. long and don't say $h!t
Sorry but this guy is wrong and unfortunately lads without knowledge will listen another one who pretend to have some and acting like an oracle. Drop and reach are the seperate measurements and stem sizing using front wheel hub is just ballz sry.
Jan Kowalski agreed, this videos very old as you can see. I'm working on some more basic fitting tips for new riders.
Stop shouting at us.
Man, slow down! I am grateful that you can reduce the speed audio by clicking on top right screen options, then click on playback speed 0.5 x. I can’t subscribe to your channel, your speech pace is out of control to my standards. Thank you for sharing this video.
You're doing it wrong
why are you shouting?!
Talking so fast, I have to replay the video many times to understand. And my BP goes up just listening.
Totally wrong and opposite of what he says. Per Alexey Varnikov’s earlier comment, if you can see the hub in front of the handlebar, the stem is too long (not too short) because now you head moves forward relative to the handlebar and the hub becomes visible in front of it.
T,
what a load of rubbish
ugh another tweaker fixie enthusiast.
no thanks for the intro.
Presentation skills need some serious work.
slow down , i cant keep up with you , other than that , ok.
