I wonder if he has a similar sentiment to how ai is nowadays where you dont even need to do anything yourself whatsoever. Is that still a cheat code or has it crossed the line
He just changed my entire perspective on digital art. Even though I tried not to, until now I think I somewhat looked down on digital drawings in particular, simply because the artists don't have to deal with a lot of the hassel involved in physical drawing or painting. Like being able to alter colors with one click or applying an effect instead of having to redo the whole thing if you want to change something. But actually, I've always believed that there are way more important aspects to art than the technical skills, and also that it's a shame how many people can't express themselves creatively because they lack any such technical skills. Now we finally have new forms of art that make that hurdle much easier to overcome. We are getting closer to the point where everyone can put art out there without having to spend years practicing, and that's a good thing. Creative vision and inspiration and things like that are becoming more important than technical ability, and imo that's how it should be.
Wtf not only does Joel have some of the best videos in existence, this has got to be one of, if not the, best tutorial ever. It’s fun, educational and creative af.
Never have a I been so interested in a man talking about how he animates for 7 minutes, his genuine awkward but real voice really draws my attention and makes me smile, every youtuber knows what its like to have a "recording voice" but this guy just doesn't care, he just speaks in his most genuine tone, and I whole-heartedly respect that.
"Art should be in the hands of everyone, you know, we shouldn't have to break our backs and our wallets and waste our lives to make it." Fuckin quote of the year right there
ALSO it allows talented artists to make MORE art because it takes them less time to complete each project. Their time is spent on artistic decisions rather than labour.
The world will remember you for this selfless gesture. Sharing information and encouraging others to utilize these tools and your process to foster their own creativity. 👍
I was actually wondering how he made these videos for weeks. It's a nice and simple way to make animations. Always wanted to make one, but I don't have much skill so this is great.
I've drawn and sometimes animated digitally with a mouse my entire life and only as I got older did I realize that everyone thinks that's weird. If that's all you use you get used to it, it can be as easy as drawing by hand, sometimes to me it feels easier. But of course you can never get as much detail as you could if you were using like a tablet or something, like I don't know if there's a pressure sensitive drawing mouse or something... Actually I'm gonna look that up.
@@Squishito A pressure sensitive mouse sounds like something that should exist but I'm not sure it does. Drawing with a mouse hurts my brain because I'm left handed for writing/drawing, but right handed for mousing. So drawing with a mouse feels like I'm using the wrong hand to draw, even though it feels way worse to mouse draw with my left.

Some people seriously think that music should be free since "it is a hobby, not a job" but do they seriously think many people would want to make music then, let alone have the financial capacity to?
@@DenSvartaStjarnan He's talking about making creativity tools accessible to *creators* and the fact that everyone can be creative. It's the *consumers'* responsibility to compensate the creators of art and music they enjoy.
@@DenSvartaStjarnan Some people do think that. And they are absolutely asshats. But more in line with Joels theorem for art. Doesn't music exist to be heard? And if you are someone who dreams of creating music, in some form, by some method. Then shouldn't the barrier to entry be as low as we can make it? The argument is hardly that art should be devalued to the point it should be free, but more that the world should be a place full of art. And if you are someone who wants to create art (for profit, or pleasure, or acclaim, etc) then you should be able to do so.
Yeah, it's just enough that you can tell it's not meant to be happening, but not so much that it's over the top and annoying. There's a lot of things like that in art.
"Art should be in the hands of everyone, and we shouldn't have to break our backs and our wallets and waste our lifes to make it." I love that statement.
@@Jukestar Dude, I know what you mean. From distractions; to being lazy, unmotivated, depressed, or just not enough damn time to sit down and write something; there are so many things stoping people from getting their creativity out there! A computer brain interface is kinda scary, but if it let me think, build, and edit with my brain. I wouldn’t care if it sucked the soul right out of me lol.
@@Jukestar I'd get a DAW, I think Ableton has a free version. It's overwhelming at first, but once you understand what does what you can put some brain into actual sounds.
I feel like the method can be 'copied' which Joel really seems to encourage, without his _style_ of animation being copied, which no one could do as well anyway :)
i think rotoscope animation is really such an underrated style. depending on the context its used in it can either emphasize in the moment awkwardness like joel said, or complex movement like this one music video i saw. plus if you do it by hand it can probably teach you a few things about animating movement on your own
this is why I prefer Rotoscoping. The only limitation is how much work you’re willing to put into the product. Whereas with CGI and Mocap you absolutely are limited by the computers abilities.
Jesus Christ the effort that went into this video... Explaining the process whilst putting in the very techniques into the video, keeping the character going, the explanation going, while also finding a way to as an editor and creator have fun with it. Letting the video become somewhat meta. It's fun to see and kinda rubs up against humor for me. It can really give a glimpse into the mind of the creator to see the levels of effort behind a given project, and what little tidbits get hidden in-between the metaphorical lines. This video is weirdly genius even for being a behind the scenes kind of video. Like how the animated person is doing the work over a typically real person. That's just... Funny to me on a level I can't quite put into words.
"Anytime technology makes art easier to learn, more accessible, more efficient, we should applaud it. Art should be in the hands of everyone, and we shouldn't have to break our backs, our wallets, and waste our lives to make it." - Joel, 5:33
When he showed that he highlighted the still frame I really thought that he was going to do that for every single frame. Which is what does happen. Just the program does it for him. I think that encapsulates the point he was talking about because fuuuuuuuck doing that lol
@@ohnoitsu1 I mean, folks used to do that (although to be fair, they had teams of animators to do it). It was called rotoscoping. The really funny thing is, one of the big uses was as a cost-savings measure to get decent animation for really complicated motion. Apparently it saved so much time (and therefore production costs) in animation for complicated stuff that the savings outweighed the cost of hiring some no-name actors and filming them dancing or fighting or whatever. It also was used sometimes for stylistic effect, like the music video for "Take on Me".
Frick, man. Good at presenting, good at editing. Is there anything Joel can't do?? (this is actually a way more straightforward process than I was expecting, it seems super accessible). "I think the more creative tools people have, the better." What. A. Dude.
It's not a terribly difficult process, just time consuming and rather repetitive. I use EbSynth to animate fight and skateboard clips and there's really not much more to it than drawing your keyframes and letting EBSynth fill in the gaps.
Joel is the kind of friend who a talented and creative introvert would wish to hang out with while working on projects like these. He's an awesome guy!
Well, it's called rotoscoping. It's neat and it's cool he's kind of revived it, but it has a history that reaches back. One of my favorite uses of it was in Adult Swim's *Dream Corp LLC*
Not only did you create a brand new style of indie rotoscoping but you shared the entire process and delivered it in a gag-style like always too. Love everything about this. Most wholesome comedian on the platform.
Joel, the fact that you go through THIS much effort to make short vids to entertain us makes me appreciate you so much more than I already thought I could. Then, to top it all off, this special method that made you famous you, instead of gate keeping it, decide to share it with the rest of us. If anyone on this platform deserved the fame and admiration it would most certainly be you. Thank you for all you do!
Once one of his videos blew up his whole channel did because his content truly is good, it just didn't have an audience before. Its rare to find someone like that. Also
Hell yes. This is peak cinema, to be exact. There is absolutely that does it like Joel does. How incredible is it that we're all alive to witness such a master of the art!
This is exactly how AI is supposed to be used in creative projects. It helps make the process faster and easier, but you still use your artistic skills and put in the work to make it your own unique style. From what I’ve seen, AI bros don’t want to put in the work and just want the AI to do EVERYTHING for them, whether it’s due to lack of artistic skill or patience, or both. And then they ignore the glaring issues because they don’t have the trained eye to spot them.
Gotta take into account that the tool don't matter if you don't know how to use them. If anything it will enrich the community and help drive the art form forward enough to make the tools more effective and whatnot.
Me: "Wow, he's so good at creating awkward moments" Joel: "Actually they were real, I didn't write anything down so we genuinely didn't know what to say" Ahahah
Dude this is pretty rare, for a creator to be praised for a unique style and everyone be asking how do you do it and then just come right out and explain exactly how, give away all the "secret sauce," and literally tell people it's okay to copy exactly their style. It's just so cool and it shows you're not insecure in your own ability to continue to innovate, evolve, and grow, and that empowering others is more important to you than trying to hold onto some gold nugget of the artistic realm that you now have ownership over. Super dope dude.
Although I totally agree, it still has some insignificant negative impact on his work. Take some of the secret fastfood recipes. People would be able to copy and recreate them, which in itself doesn't really have any impact on the flavour of these secret recipes, in fact, it's the opposite. Giving people the opportunity to improve, upgrade, alter art styles through inspiration such as this channel, will make the "flavour" significantly better as we will be getting more "recipes" of such type, where some may be potentially far more "tasty". But, the insignificant negative impact is that it as a result makes his work less unique. Now, in my opinion, I like when the stuff I watch is unique. I enjoy a wide disparity between the kinds of content that gets recommended to me. Unfortunately, this is difficult to do when so many people spam the same things. I made the mistake with reddit-reading videos. I fixed my recommended now, but for a few weeks it was pretty annoying. The risk of poor-quality content becomes greater the more people try it, which as a result makes it harder to find the best of the best creators out there. edit: I totally support what he did, but this is rather my individualistic preference. I get that some people may like seeing more content like his, but I personally prefer my content "concentrated" rather than "watered-down".
@@TechSupportDave I agree. However, you miss the point in what will *ALWAYS* make Joel's animations superior to anything that may come out similar to it: him, Joel. He has such a unique way in how he carries himself and talks that can never be imitated or copied. I watch his animations not just for the cool style of the animations, but for the characters he creates.
@@TechSupportDave you like your content not watered down and concentrated so that a variety of single creator's have different styles. But by doing that your missing out ALOT of fun shit people make that is similar dude. The only insignificant impact that has happened is that you limit yourself to feeding through a straw While as everyone else has their helpings by the spoon full. Because You won't broaden out what you watch. You've restricted yourself into a corner. Joel on the other hand is the opposite. By revealing his secrets he's shown that he's not afraid of what other people make. He's strongly confident that his content alone is more then just an arstyle. By sharing his secrets he improves and encourages other RUclipsrs to be creative and to give them the spark so that their content might be able to be "concentrated" Aswell It sure as shit is better then hoarding his techniques so no one learns how to improve
@@pingaspearce9403 [TL;DR at the bottom] I disagree with this one part. I do not watch youtube enough to feel the necessity to NOT feed myself through a straw (Though I wouldn't call it that). Therefore, I prefer to watch only the things that I love the most. My youtube experience would become significantly worse if I were to suddenly start watching everything that gets recommended to me. For one, it would mess up my recommended as I previously mentioned. Two, I'd be wasting a lot of time on content that I do not enjoy, or do not enjoy as much. This is something that I did when I was younger. I did not enjoy the amount of videos I'd abandon half-way. It was not only unhealthy watching things I don't enjoy, but it was also unhealthy how much time I actually spent on youtube. Just to clarify, it's not that i'm not broadening my horizons. I have simply stopped letting myself get clickbaited. This means, 99% of the time I stay watching content that I enjoy the most. That 1% being that risk of wasted time. That's a balance that I'm fine with, as it means that for every 100 videos watched, there's one video that I watch that I don't know I'll like. And, that 1 video IS usually a video that I'll like. Why? Because it's usually a video that truly grabs my interest and perfectly appeals to my preferences. In fact, these proportions are perfect in my case, because there's also a 1% chance that I'll stop watching a type of content or creator. So the things I watch are perpetually changing. I probably wouldn't even call it a "Straw", but rather just a methodical approach that completely satisfies me. There will always be amazing content creators that I won't know about. Why would I bother going out of my way to find them all when it's impossible in the first place? Why would I even want more if I'm already watching content that I wholly enjoy? I quite frankly don't see the point if I don't have the capacity to regularly watch them all in the first place. This isn't pokemon. Maybe to you it is if you spend your entire days on youtube, but other people are often different. I can't spend my days searching through youtube for new things, and I don't know why I'd want to if I'm enjoying watching the things i'm enjoying. TL;DR: I'm not feeding myself through a straw and who are you to tell me how I should use youtube? I'm already watching content that's as enjoyable as it can get for me, if you have a problem with that then you're simply an asshole. --------------------------------------------------------------- Won't be bothering to reply any further as I'm anticipating people to purposefully misunderstand me, as you already partially did but there's no point pointing it out now.
I don't think everyone could have the balls to do something like this, revealing how everything is done, I mean it's not like someone couldn't figure it out, but still showing the whole process so everyone can give it a try, you ma man have some big ass balls.

I was actually wondering how he made these videos for weeks. It's a nice and simple way to make animations.
Always wanted to make one, but I don't have much skill so this is great.
Not only does he fully explain and demonstate his unique animation method, but he also encourages others to try it out and make it their own 😭
he does it with a mouse
he does it with a mouse
he's too powerful
And that mouse's name is Marshall
I've drawn and sometimes animated digitally with a mouse my entire life and only as I got older did I realize that everyone thinks that's weird. If that's all you use you get used to it, it can be as easy as drawing by hand, sometimes to me it feels easier. But of course you can never get as much detail as you could if you were using like a tablet or something, like I don't know if there's a pressure sensitive drawing mouse or something... Actually I'm gonna look that up.
Well he can't do it with Marshall the Rat because he's a criminal.
Is the Mouses name Marshal ?

"Havermation" as I've seen in other comments.

This reminds me of that "but DJs aren't real musicians, they're technicians at best" bs
I fr thought this whole artstyle was just AI tracing an actual video, didn't expect it to be so hands on! Well done!

i think rotoscope animation is really such an underrated style. depending on the context its used in it can either emphasize in the moment awkwardness like joel said, or complex movement like this one music video i saw. plus if you do it by hand it can probably teach you a few things about animating movement on your own

This is exactly how AI is supposed to be used in creative projects. It helps make the process faster and easier, but you still use your artistic skills and put in the work to make it your own unique style.

It's just so cool and it shows you're not insecure in your own ability to continue to innovate, evolve, and grow, and that empowering others is more important to you than trying to hold onto some gold nugget of the artistic realm that you now have ownership over.
Super dope dude.
So much wisdom at such a young age. Joel is the hero we need but don't deserve.

@@TechSupportDave you like your content not watered down and concentrated so that a variety of single creator's have different styles.
But by doing that your missing out ALOT of fun shit people make that is similar dude. The only insignificant impact that has happened is that you limit yourself to feeding through a straw
While as everyone else has their helpings by the spoon full.
Because You won't broaden out what you watch. You've restricted yourself into a corner.
Joel on the other hand is the opposite. By revealing his secrets he's shown that he's not afraid of what other people make. He's strongly confident that his content alone is more then just an arstyle.
By sharing his secrets he improves and encourages other RUclipsrs to be creative and to give them the spark so that their content might be able to be "concentrated"
Aswell
It sure as shit is better then hoarding his techniques so no one learns how to improve
@@pingaspearce9403 [TL;DR at the bottom]
I disagree with this one part.
---------------------------------------------------------------
