Hey, taking a slight detour to tell us about a company and their history, especially in a American manufacturer, is a welcome addition to what you're doing on this channel honestly. Keep it up
Very premium parts and USA made. Still has outstanding control over the bass too. These designs were well regulated and had excellent damping needed for "tight" bass and delivered the goods too!
I love how you always add extra history and personal knowledge about these old amps. I used to install these “old school” amps back in 1990 for a small shop in Florida. I even went to the IASCA finals in Tempe AZ in 1990 or 1991. It was all so different back then.
My older brother had a 2 channel version of this amp. The Autotek 44. He had it running two 12” MTX Blue Thunder subs if my memory serves me right. I’m sure he was running the amp at 2 ohm mono, and eventually he killed the amp doing this. It was loud in the meantime though, especially being in a hatchback!! Thanks Big D!! I’m loving this memory lane series!!!
I can vouch that the older Autotek amps were something special. I had the Autotek 7300 BTS 300 watt(150X2) back then. I had it bridged to four 15" Kicker Competitions. Mono bridged was supposed to be 500 watts. They would jump over an inch and make my front windshield vibrate almost a quarter inch. It sounded amazing. I got so many compliments on it. Definitely not your average amp. I would easily rate them with Fosgates.
Kids today wouldn’t understand the Flea Market or swap meet for the west siders , was some of the only places you could find a verity on car audio products.
@@dextermorgan1that's right boss is still around and ssl. Compared to my old jbc, jdl, or pyramid amp I got from the flea market. To be honest though boss and ssl still was a step up in power and reliability.
@@charlespughii3356 not sure which model but I had the pyramid with the clear plastic. The watts on the amp didn't match the manual, and in the summer it went into protection all the time. It finally melted it's fuses lol.
May be wrong but autotek and hifonics (especially zed amps) were very comparable. Love seeing these. Ahh,same build house, makes sense. Ty sir for sharing
I currently have the white Autotek 7050bts in perfect working condition. I actually just tested all my old school amps and repaired my Orion HCCA 225 2nd gen myself. Watching Big D’s videos motivated me.
I've been in the Car Audio business since the late 80s. When these came out as you say it was hard to convince customers to buy over the Rockford amps, But if I remeber these were quite a bit more reliable. I ran them for a while and they were great. Alot of great memories back then!
seems like the kiddies overlook A/D/S/... TOO EXPENSIVE for them to ever understand of them times. I INSTALLED them myself, the BEST in car audio PERIOD... Still today my A/D/S/ amps outperform much of my other vintage gear and dont get me going on the garbage produced these days.... Garbage these days is why the ABYSS Class A costs 8 grand... boy, seeing this Autotek on the bench brings back some memories for sure! I had a Autotek 9050 driving a pair of RF series 1 15s mounted isobarically inside the cab of a Dodge RAM 50. The outer sub's magnet stuck out between the Fiero bucket seats i salvaged for the ride. Loved the way it sounded, but the load wasn't low enough to exploit the full potential of the amp. The subs were louder when I had a Hifonics Hercules driving them... Sadly, the autotek 9050 was stolen out of my truck while i was in boot camp...
I had the 7204 four-channel and it was a beast. I had the 7300 and the 7050 as well. Expensive back then. Paid $2,600 Canadian for these three amps. Still have the two larger ones.
All Zed built amps were fantastic and could go toe to toe with the big three back in the day: Orion, PPI, Rockford. My favorite would probably be the HiFonics VII series and the blue stripe BTS. Few years back a guy listed his Autotek BTS amps on Craigslist: 9050, 7100, 7050, 7054 and a broken 7150, all near mint with original plugs. Said they're old technology not like the new class D's. Took my offer of $180 for the lot. I've owned multiples of every blue stripe BTS amp and that champagne 9050. 9100 was the only amp I never could find.
Had two of those Bass Thrust 500 watt (@ 4 ohm mono) on two Fosgate Punch 18’s in the trunk of my 84 Cutlass in the 90’s. 1/0 power wire with spare 6D tractor battery in the trunk. Had Autotek 300 front stage (6 mids/highs) and 200 rear stage (8 mids/highs/mid bass) I had someone ask if that was my car about a year ago. Legends never die!
Currently have a Mean Machine 222 hidden in the closet. Still functions perfectly with factory caps. How many brands from the early 90s can say that 30+ yrs later. And yes, the Mean Machine series was definitely beast mode
Good morning anything was the 50 SHC the way were cleaner Amplifiers than any that was ever made if you’re running mid and eyes this is the way to go. I used to learn these from my base and was in a 200 W class. No one would win, but me when I did this back in the day a lot more to know about all of this, but these were the cleanest Amplifiers ever made. If you look at the ratings on them it’s pretty incredible. When you hear it in sound of tweeters and it’s incredible, especially with the plug-in modules I started running Jl Audio tweaks these really make a big difference, when I say big difference I mean cleaner problem is old music like Fleetwood Mac has that little hiss that she’ll always hear new music doesn’t have that it is crystal clear big difference in Bass from old to New so much to know about this stuff. I’m glad I got to experience it in my life, once you get your combs set for your base and some really nice mids and high it’s unbelievable but yes there is more to it than just that I hope someday I get to meet you big D I think you’re amazing
So happy you made this, I still run my 7300 bts I pulled it out this year got bored 😆 on 2 10s it's mean sounds amazing nothing like playing with old school audio love this video
Yep, Autotek made some great apps. Back in the day one of the last systems I was running before I got into other things and stepped away from car audio was a pair of Jensen XS Bass 12's w/ a 900 watt Targa hexfet 6 channel amp bridged @ 4 ohm's with 6x9's & 6 5" door speakers and it sounded great. In some ways it sounded better than my new system with a 200 watt receiver, four 6 5 speakers in the doors and a 1000 watt XXX amp & two matching XXX 10" subs. It's clean, sounds really good and the subs hit surprisingly well however I still miss that Target amp and I think it would have done a lot better in this rig 🤣
What everyone is missing is that in the late 80's this was a pretty strong amp. Autotek's competitors weren't any more powerful for the same money. Also, the emphasis was still on SQ so, flexing trunks and rattling license plates wasn't a goal. I believe Autotek even had a high current competition series as well. These low power amps (by today's standard) paved the way for the crazy power we see in today's amps.
Love these old school vids. Picked up a Autotek 7100 bts and a Hifonics Thor series VII years ago at a yard sale and still have them both. Would love to see a test on the Thor since it seems really underrated!
I was going to post a similar comment. I totally agree with you. The least amount of components introduced in the chain equals less introduced noise at the end.
Will forever miss my 220mxi & 2 80mxi's 😢. For 380 watts total through 6 spkrs up front 4 in rear and 4 10's it sure seemed louder cleaner and more effortless than any modern system I've had. Maybe it's just nostalgia 🤔.
Did you ever hear the hart attack box at Incredible Universe? it had a 99mxi running it would shake the whole store you couldn't stand in front of it for a long time it was hart professional 15 in a bandpass
I had the black label 7054 bts back in the day. I traded a Hott set-up 2.125 amplifier for it. Love this video, always wondered how much power it was cranking out.
10:38 I grew up using a Technics home receiver to power all of my speakers and subwoofers (in my room obviously, not a car). Rated at 100w x2 it pushed the common style old school 10’s through 15’s pretty good. It was plenty to have the next door neighbors angry 😅. 100w real world power is even great for the door speakers in a car, plenty of volume and headroom over head unit power for normal music listening. Quite frankly, 100w will power an efficient sub(s) fairly well too and still get pretty loud.
Yeah, the power numbers back then were WAYYY lower, but it might surprise you how little power it takes to drive a set of door speakers. I recall having a Punch 40ix and it would push anything I connected to it and sound awesome. Also, I have a home amp with VU meters for the power output and even playing music really loud, I've not seen the meters exceed 15 watts per channel.
The distortion was also rated in 10ths of a percent or less instead of at 1% as well. I doubt many of todays amps could even begin to get close to the same distortion numbers and damping factor as old school amps.
I wasn’t a big fan or Autotek .I liked RF for thrashing .PG for Power and SQ For 1-1/2 ohm US Amps They were a ZED amplifier. So of course it will make its rating I had a store from 1987-1997 . Autotek were good amplifiers But for the same $$$ You could get a RF,PG,Hifonics ,Orion or US Amps All would exceed their rating by 4-8 times .Its rated power Why buy a amplifier that is 22 watts That does 35 watts When you can get a old Punch 45 That will do 4-5 times its rated power Even run 16 even 32 speakers Thank you again for an amazing video Big D
Sherwood was a decent 90's amp. I had the 100x4. I also had a JSE 150x2. Jet Sound Engineering. Another early 90's. I got mine about '93 new from a eh kind of shop.
Had on similar Autotek not sure of the wattage and PPI built crutchfield 150x4 and liked the bass output better when using the PPI with dual RF 15's and Sony xec 1000 crossover
About a year ago but within the past 6 months decided to make it old school only content. It was an “extras” channel for a bit but the old school stuff still gets the love
Big D did you know you can use spade connectors with those screw terminals? You slide the spade under the whole screw and it's thread then tighten the screw against the spade and bottom plastic. I thought this was a gimmick but upon further inspection it looks like it was designed for that. Might not be all screw terminals
I'm actually still using my Autotek on my 6x9's. I have my EQ gains turned down low, but I have to keep the treble and bass on the amp at zero, or the sound is way too loud! I have the grey and blue smaller one. I believe it's 45 Watts x 2.
A lot of ppi amplifiers from back in the day were so tightly regulated they would lose power if supplied over 12.5 volts. Current clamps, most new designers shy away from that design.
125x2 is enough to make your car bump if you have good speakers and a well-built box. Autotek makes really good 6x9's cheap. For 30 bucks they get loud. Sound just as good as speakers that cost 4x as much.
I have two audio tech 1000 watts 4 channel on 4 8 inch skar subs and 2 8 inch skar 8 inch mid bass 25 small tweeters it slaps hard for some budget amps
I have an old amp at home i found at my dads after he passed last year. Its physically larger that my Orion Splx 3k, and i think it says 400 watts? Ill have to look at brand when i get in from work, i cant find anything on the company except a cassette deck they made long ago.
My first system was a autotek 44 running into a 10” bazooka with a Savard sub to replace the original in my 5.0 mustang of course like vanilla ice 🤦🏻♂️😂

I wasn’t a big fan or Autotek .I liked RF for thrashing .PG for Power and SQ

But for the same $$$
You could get a RF,PG,Hifonics ,Orion or US Amps

That does 35 watts
When you can get a old Punch 45
That will do 4-5 times its rated power
Even run 16 even 32 speakers
Thank you again for an amazing video

I have two audio tech 1000 watts 4 channel on 4 8 inch skar subs and 2 8 inch skar 8 inch mid bass 25 small tweeters it slaps hard for some budget amps
Legendary ftw!
bass and treble controls were important because of deck voltage and lack of a preamp
Given they’re made by Zed, it’s very closely rated to HiFonics Cupid or Juno for the time. It would be an interesting dyno comparison.
Sounds good still
Dumb question, but you're saying the alternators back then only charged at 12 V?
Even in the 80's cars were running 13.5-14v. mid 60's thru 70's was 13.5
I know. I had a lot of friends who swore 12v was just 12v. Even after I should one that the alternator was putting out 13.2 to14.2 on a 1966 car.
I have an old amp at home i found at my dads after he passed last year. Its physically larger that my Orion Splx 3k, and i think it says 400 watts? Ill have to look at brand when i get in from work, i cant find anything on the company except a cassette deck they made long ago.
Send me a pic OldSchoolStereo (at) gmail
Had punch.. thunder. Ppi. My favorite was the old fultron mx line. But never bought the Memphis stuff
My first system was a autotek 44 running into a 10” bazooka with a Savard sub to replace the original in my 5.0 mustang of course like vanilla ice 🤦🏻♂️😂
