Tudor Black Bay 58 Navy Blue (Hands-On Review): First Week on the Wrist

  • A Discussion and Review around the Tudor Black Bay 58 Navy Blue. A watch that has been perpetuated by Hype and Demand over the past four months and one that I criticised for its barebones choice of using Blue with no other accents. The question: How well does this watch integrate into daily wearing and a simple rotation? Very, very easily. I might even consider owning one...

    Just a 5 star watch. When you get it on your wrist it’s just magic. Handsome, bone tough, and crazy accurate. I wore mine a week and it didn’t lose/gain a single second against the atomic clock. Couldn’t be more pleased with it. For sure my Omega Seamaster is going to be looking for a new home

    I bought my blue 58 from an AD a few months ago. I was there to put my name on the Rolex list again. While looking at Oris and Omega the sales person suggested I look at Tudor. After seeing the blue 58 in the showcase I was hooked. It is a fabulous watch and I absolutely love it! I also have a datejust, kermit sub date, black sub date, daytona and a yachtmaster. I find that I reach for my blue 58 more often than the others. It's a joy to own.

    As a Rolex Sub owner, I must say this Tudor might just be the perfect watch. I love my Submariner and will only part with it when I pass it to my son. This Tudor however is gorgeous. It has all the quality of a Rolex but with its own identity, and none of the negative stereotype. Having seen the blue Tudor at my local AD recently I would not consider them sterile or boring. The blue is the perfect shade, not too much or to little. If I didn’t already have the Rolex , (it was an anniversary present),I would grab this Tudor and never look back.
    I like!!

    • @rickyromano6659

      I own both the sub and bb58 blue. I really like having both. The BB58 is the perfect understated low-key option for more day to day life. Plus, in my opinion there are enough differences in color, case size, and crown that they do not all feel like the same watch. I would definitely recommend adding it to your collection if the only thing holding you back is your sub.

      Thanks for the insight. The key word here is collection. Lol . As someone who really doesn’t want to have a collection, I have to think to myself, when is enough enough. I do have several other nice watches, and each one has its own story. That being said, each one interferes with the enjoyment of the other ones! Lol . Oh the humanity!!
      Enjoy those two masterpieces my friend!
      The Tudor has caught my eye in a big way so it may happen. Time will tell! Pun intended.🧐

    The blue color and the steel of the band are stunning. It works beautifully when I wear jeans. I own many more fancy watches but this one is my favorite every day watch. That blue also change colors depending on the light and often looks black.

    It is very nice to see a hands on assessment to accompany your original video. I own the watch. I bought it the day it was released. I was one of those who happily jumped on the hype bandwagon. However, I did so because I really liked the original BB58 but didn't like the original color combo. This model gave me the size and shape and fit that I knew I liked and added the blue color. I think your points in the first video are valid, but I was pleased that your reassessment so closely matched my feelings and thoughts about the watch.
    I also would have liked the square indices more. I had a Pelagos and sold it b/c I disliked the chunkiness of the case and bracelet. However, the indices on that watch looked really good paired with the snowflake hands.

    This watch is way more Tudor than Rolex IMO. Tudor does blue while Rolex does Black. Tudor has been teasing us with colored bezels for years and now they’ve given us the real deal. Not to mention this is somewhat a replacement for the Steel Smirf so many people wanted (not mentioned in the video). IMO, this is the modern Tudor Submariner and what’s not to love about that ?

    I very recently bought the Black Bay 58 Navy Blue to compliment a range of predominantly black-dialled watches in my collection that include the classic Rolex Submariner Date 16610 that I've owned for 19 yrs. The Tudor is a super, very well-made luxury timepiece and I appreciate its rather understated blue dial and bezel compared to the 'bling-blue' ceramic of my Omega Seamaster 300. Like-for-like think of the Blue 58 as a more modern take on its original black and gilt sibling. The blue really pops in daylight or in well-lit rooms and a pleasure to wear. Although not quite up there with the Rolex in the absolute quality stakes - why should it be when barely 35% of the price - go to an AD and try one on. You won't be disappointed.

    The other point on which this has the Explorer beaten, is how flat the clasp lies on the bracelet when closed. The Explorer’s clasp sits very proud of the bracelet and feels less refined because of it, in my opinion. I have the 214270 and the BB36 (blue) and much prefer the whole bracelet & clasp on the Tudor, not to mention the general wearability on my 7” wrist. Great vid as always. Hope you and yours are keeping well. 😉👍

    I love this watch.I wear a suit/blazer 5 days a week (or, at least, used to before the pandemic) so my collection is rather dress watch heavy. It also suits my style. So looking for a sports watch I sought something classic, under the radar, far from flashy or gaudy. And reasonably priced. This piece is timeless, could be worn in 1960s as well as today.

    I was not taken in by the hype of this watch, I don't follow social media much. The first I knew of it was from reviewers saying how hyped it was and dismissing it. But their voices just diminished to a whisper as I was taken in by it's beauty. After a few months on a waiting list and having people ahead of me drop out I finally owned one. You're right, the pictures don't do it justice. The dial is constantly changing depending on how the light hits it. The bezel, crystal and crown are perfectly matched to compliment it's styling. I have it on the blue soft touch leather which further elevates the blue of the dial and bezel. A joy to wear, it's hard to keep your eyes off it. I will not be selling mine.

    Great vid as usual and nice to see how irl experience with it compares to the hype wash-back. Personally, I still think the OG BB58 is the more interesting, charming and important watch of the 2 and is the one I still have on my list. I am wondering if what with all that has gone on this year, all new watches have received more hype than they would in an ordinary year, thinking of the new Rolex Subs and especially their OP Doxa homages, the new Snoopy Moonwatch for example. Are watch fans just happy to see and be around to experience new watches maybe?

    I really like that you’ve changed your view. I hope this might remove a little of your “hype bias.” New releases from the big names must get boring for YTers who are talking about them so much. Some of them are just good watches. I thought your initial hot take on the watch was off. In the metal it’s nice to see you’ve changed your mind.

      Okay, okay, not 90%, maybe 85.4% instead ;) And it's great being able to handle the watch after the initial "hype" has died down. It just bugs me how these watches aren't seen as anything but objects to sell (put your money into) by the vast community... the piece loses its magic. It's a damn good watch (I've never said otherwise about the BB58 line) and the colour, for us enthusiasts, makes for a superb supplementary sporty / beater watch in a collection. Although I've always liked the general design and dimensions of the BB58, I wasn't a big fan of the original BB58's yellowish lume and gilt accents. I find the blue version fresher and although it's a little sterile, that also makes it very versatile and timeless. You often hear fans of the original version say that that one is the more versatile and timeless, but I personally disagree. Black is indeed a little more versatile than blue as a dial color, but crisp white lume and white gold markers are way more neutral, versatile and timeless than gilt and faux patina. A Submariner is universally considered as being one of the most versatile watches and it's about as clean and crisp as they come... I do agree with people who find the Blue version a little dull, because I kinda have the same feeling, but it's still an attractive watch. Sadly I'm looking for something in a different color since I have too much blue and black in my collection already...

    • @_crowbar9162
      @_crowbar9162 2 года назад

      I have yet to see both in person... But, looking at the photos, I just don't like the gilt accents on the black version of the watch. I wish they made the flat black version. I would literally buy that watch this very second. The blue version is so much more beautiful to me than the black one, because it's simple, two tone and absolutely timeless. The issue is that you have to dress around that watch, which I don't appreciate :/ Blue is just not as versatile as black is.
      Going to check out a blue one this Thursday at a dealer, and see if I fall in love with it in person, the way I did on photos. No black version in stock, unfortunately, so I can't see if I like the gilt..

    I visited an AD to try the 58 and came out with a BB36. I’m so glad that I did. It’s a much nicer watch with a more serviceable ETA 2824. The 58 just tries too hard to be a vintage Tudor sub. so I held off and bought a 1980’s 94010 instead with the snowflake dial. So glad I did!

    Saw this in person 10 days ago. Very beautiful watch but I eventually decided to not buy it. Too expensive for me right now and I was not comfortable making the decision on the spot (just got off waitlist). The one I saw was also on the NATO instead of the bracelet. The blue really pops but overall the watch has a strong tool-watch vibe. Not flashy enough for my taste (seems almost a bit dull).

    I think Tudor, as a whole, has listened to the Rolex enthusiasts and is giving us what we want while Rolex moves further into the 'super car' or strictly luxury realm. I like the Blue 58, but there certainly was a ton of hype surrounding it.

    Mine is a fraction too tight on my wrist. I removed some links and am currently set up in a way that I use the widest micro adjustment holes. I tried adding one link and then going to the tightest micro adjustment, but then it's too loose. Unfortunately, when my wrist expands in hot weather, the watch gets very uncomfortable to wear. My strapcode superoyster bracelet is LEAPS more comfortable, which is pretty sad, considering the price difference..

    I've owned the BB58 black and GMT but sold both. I ended up getting a Pelagos LHD instead. If they made the BB58 with snowflake dial, non-rivet bracelet and a date I would sell the Pelagos and buy that straight away.

    • @mountainhobo
      @mountainhobo 3 года назад

      Pelagos is gorgeous, but it's so thick (14.3 mm). Also, it kinda bugs me that it has entire bezel lumed instead of just the pip. It creates visual noise, and goes against the spirit of a tool watch.

    • @MattSteemson
      @MattSteemson 3 года назад

      @@mountainhobo For me having a lumed bezel makes it more of a tool watch. When I dive with it the whole bezel lights up and enables me to read exact elapsed time. The whole watch is function over form which epitomises a tool watch. I do wish it was a couple of millimetres thinner but other than that it is the best tool watch and back up watch to my dive computer in my whole collection.

    • @mountainhobo
      @mountainhobo 3 года назад

      @@MattSteemson I am not sure I am buying this. Are you saying you are using your watch for diving with the bezel set to measure elapsed time instead of setting the pip to the target point where you need to surface? May I ask why?

    • @MattSteemson
      @MattSteemson 3 года назад

      @@mountainhobo Huh? The bezel triangle is set to the minute hand and because the whole bezel is lumed I am able to read all the numbers and not just the lumed bezel pip. It's very helpful on night dives. I live and work in the dive industry in the Cayman Islands so I am diving all the time. I primarily use a dive computer and the Pelagos is just a back up and visual aid or timing separate things underwater.

    • @mountainhobo
      @mountainhobo 3 года назад

      @@MattSteemson "Huh?" -- Try it, so you don't have to look so surprised. Set the pip to the target minute, and you will see the minute hand approach it. That way it acts as a countdown timer. Then you don't need all the lumed indices on the bezel (most dive watches don't have them lumed, except for the pip, of course).
