- How can I tell if my chickens have worms?
• Pale combs
• Weight loss
• Stopped laying eggs
• Poop on the eggs
If your chickens live outside in a coop just assume they have worms, all animals that live outside have worms and need to be wormed on a regular basis.
There are lots of different worms chickens can get. A couple of them are: hair worms, round worms (the easiest ones to see because they look like spaghetti), tape worms (hard to spot because they’re very small), gape worm (looks like a Y).
What is the best treatment for worms?
We want to use a wormer that kills all the worms, and the eggs, and is all natural and chemical free.
What I use is call Diatomaceous Earth. The reason I like it is it’s chemical free, and it kills all the different kinds of worms.
Particular chemical wormers only work on particular worms. That’s the beauty of DE, it kills all the worms.
How much DE should I give and how often?
For babies:
Wait until they’re a month old before you start to worm - because if you de-worm too young it could constipate them - then once a month mix 1/4 cup of DE per 2lbs of non medicated chick starter. Then just feed them as normal.
For adults:
once a month mix 1 cup of DE per 5lbs of whatever you’re feeding them. Then put that in the automatic feeder and once it’s gone fill it back up as normal.

I don't even have chickens, how did I end up here? 😅 Love this tho!
It means someone up there thinks that you would enjoy having your own chickens
You will have chickens in the future.
Same here!
Have you got chickens yet?
You need some! They are fun!
You saved my chickens life, thank you.

I only buy the "food grade" DE. I use it 2-3 times a year in their feed to worm them. I use it 3-4 times per year in their coop, nest boxes, run, roosts and in the area where they give themselves dust baths. It helps to kill mites etc. And its safe to continue eating the eggs because its the food grade type!!
Love using DE! I use it for all my animals here. Horses, dogs and chickens!! Great video :)
You are an excellent example of why an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. We learned that lesson dealing with fleas on our cat.
I am just planning to run coop next year perhaps and to start from buying 6 tiny chicks but I am learning 1st and your channel and energy you have is best source for me. I wanna take care of my chicks as if they were my babies heh I love how much caring you gives to them and respect ♥♥
I live in NZ and I have been able to get Diatomaceous Earth...can't wait to see results....thank you Becky...love your videos
How was your experience???
I don't know why I watch your videos, but I absolutely love them. :D
Hehe she is very relaxing to watch :) I love her vids as well
It's because she talks to her viewers in a tone intended for a child, so she appeals to one's inner kid ;)
Because she's hot. ;)
Me too.
@@danielletracyann me too
Wow, wished I had found you years back. Have had chickens for little over a year, just been winging it. Seriously. My farmer grandparents didn't find it necessary to teach us these things. We were city dwellers tho and only had cat and a dog. Grateful for this most helpful information and education. ❤❤❤
Can also make DE dust bath with wood ash.
so as i seen this i knew it was food grade De. love this i takes it every day.
Omg!!!!! I am so freaking happy I found this video, thank you so much I am definitely stocking up on this stuff
Thanks for sharing! Your videos are so informative! Cheers from an off grid homestead in Canada! 🇨🇦
Thank you you’re the best homestead channel I go to for my girls. Thank you so much!
God Bless
Bloody fantastic video Becky! Thank you for the great advice! One of my chooks was sick and i mixed some DE in with her food and the next day she bounced back! I even put some under her feathers for mites etc. Thanks so much for sharing! Regards from Australia. Subbed.
Jimbo, how did it go? from Sth Burnet QLD ;)
@@alexandramcleod2079 hi Alexandra! Yeah it went great! My chooks haven't been healthier!
Thank you, Becky. I appreciate you sharing this helpful information and my chickens thank you.
you're like a homesteading angel!
I was just looking at chemical dewormers and then you tell me this and I already have diatomaceous earth for my garden so this is awesome and you have to get the correct kind which is food-grade diatomaceous earth!
LOL... those dogs crack me up!!!
I feel happy when I watch your videos!! Your so good with your animals. Your always joyful, and you have a plethora of information.
THANK-YOU !!
Thank you Becky. The tips are awesome. I want a few hens for eggs. Cackle hatchery has “chocolate eggers” they have bred. I plan having a few and keeping them on our flower farm.
Thank you so much...
I don't like to see my poor chicken sick..
And feel like I can't help my beautiful chicken...because where I live there is no vet to treat chickens..
So I'm very glad you share this tip..
Lol you pups love that chicken feed! So cute thanks for the great info
Great informative
just wanna say I'm enjoying the extra videos thru out the week. thanks for sharing.
I don't know what it is about chicken feed and dogs, but they love it, LOL. My neighbor's lab came over and just started gobbling right out of the bucket as I tried to feed, LOL.
😆
Natural is always good. I never treated my chickens for worms before. They didn't get sick til 14, 15 yrs old, the day before dying. I had very fit wild neighborhood chickens from decades of living on the streets. (I recommend hearty street chickens, heinz 57s, over fancy breeds. Now I have rescues so ill try the DE as a preventative. I assume this clears gastrointestinal parasites only, but not others like adult gapeworm, lungworm...etc
Lol. So funny. I love you. Your so great. I am just like you. When I find something that benefits and works great I share with everyone. Because I feel like they should know. If we all know everything is better. Your dog is so cute and funny. Take care. And thank you for all of your help.
First video of yours I've watched and this is exactly what I was looking for in a video. I even have the same bag of DE xD thank you 😊 subscribing
Ditto! I already have this same DE so this is great to know for a preventative!
Thank you my chickens got tape worm yesterday I was DISGUSTING glad to know it’s curable
Nice video and love to see your chicken 🐔, stay blessed and keep it up
I absolutely love your page. You've saved me so much money.
Thank you, Becky for sharing this info! We will be implementing diatomaceous earth to our chicken and cat feed.
Super video - Love them and always feel de- stressed after watching. Becky do you raise turkeys ? If you do would you share please ? Muriel
So happy and beautiful all ur babie's,.and Neil in the pool,.So sweet..!
My mom was saying I should also powder spray this on the grass to prevent unwanted bugs and it's 100% safe for animals instead of using chemicals to treat the same grass that the chickens and my pets are using. Thanks!
I have used DE with my dogs and cat but it also works amazing as a flea treatment on carpets.
Great
for GI? I thought it had to be dry to work? I'm doubtful the gi tract is dry
Thank you for your advise helps. I have always used DE but saw articles against it for chickens so thank you for the reassurance.
Make sure that you get food grade DE. I think you forgot to mention that part of it.
pumpkin seeds in a blender with buttermilk works too.
thank you for the video. my chickens have been looking like crackheads lately.
😂
Great video Becky and very informative, I'll be starting this regime today! Blessings...
I just got four beautiful golden hens. They are so neat. I just love them.
Buff orpingtons? I have three and they are lovely.
يا سلام عليك.. جاري التجربة ان شاء الله .. شكرا لك❤
Thank you, you have a good heart, I will be doing this for my girls. Stay safe, have a good day.
watermelon bowl is a great idea!! I love your show Becky! great job!
All you have to do is put Epsom Salts in their water. About a teaspoonful to a gallon/5 litres of water is sufficient.
Love your channel. Thanks for all the excellent knowledge you share!
Thank you so much blessings and more blessings to you and your family
It’s good for people too. Make sure it’s food grade and not the kind for pools. Is this good for the garden too?
How can you suggest "dosing" regardless of flock size? Would this work as well for 2 hens as 200? Thanks!
Please keep your fingers crossed this helps my sweet hen 😭
Hey I know it's been a couple months but I hope your hen is OK I too have a pet hen I've raised her since she was just a little egg She means a lot to me so I understand how you feel Hope all is well.
You can also use two tablets of ecto endo.
@@vickiwojtowicz7391 can you please explain more about the ecto endo tablets and how they work? my hen is sick with worms :(
@@doodmaam7962 my poor rooster is getting ill with I think worms because his comb is going pale and he’s becoming more aggressive towards my family probably because of the stress
@@doodmaam7962 ecto endo is a chemical dewormer made using ivermectin and something else. I wouldn’t use it unless you have to.
thank you so much! I already had DE but didnt know exactly how to use it lol and this worked amazing
Great video ! I appreciate the detail on how much and how often to give them of the DE . I had been confused about that before I watched. Your video
thank you for all the great & necessary information. I love your videos , you have a great farm and love for your animals.
thank you, thank you, thank you!!!! this is a great video. Helped answer ALL my questions!!! thank you again!!!
Thank you for this simple explanation!!! This helps!!
DE won't do anything for internal parasites. We have tried this and still give them DE in feed but we still have problems from time to time!!!! DE works well for external parasites and is great for micronutrient uptake!!!
What do you give your chickens to eliminate as well as prevent worms from coming back?
@@CoolCatCaramel i suggest pumpkin seeds.

I had not idea you could use DE in the feed! I use it in the coop against mites. I did not know I had to worm chickens - they look good but are not laying. I will chick it's the best food grade type; thank you for this Becky!
Woody is getting fiber into his diet! LOL
Lots of good info. I have two hens that have stopped laying and I don't know if it is because it is hot or what but I will give them more protein and I have to get some grit tomorrow.
How many chickens do you have? 5 lbs of DE feed may be too much or not enough depending on the size of the flock.
I love your videos so much becky❤️ So helpful! Thank you.
CHICKEN, CHICKEN SALT :D
I knew it!! Organic farm here we use it for all kinds of things we ingest it for gut health as well very uselful vid thanks
Informative nice.. you are great about giving information
Worms also gives you a sign that the aria is not clean since the they poop ou the eggs that goes in the grass or feed and then another eats it and that Is how they spread
Great info Becky, thank you for sharing!
The dogs are like we better get some of that incase we have worms haha
I love using DE and we don't have a homestead yet. Good in the garden too. Can you do a video addressing helping your animals deal with heat. I'm in Central Florida. Hot and humid.
+Martha Michloney make sure they have plenty of shade and water and don't let them get over weight.
Thank you for this as I suspected one of my girls has worms.
Plz share information with me about how to deworming of hens.
@@syedtahirshah9925 Charitable Miracle Beekeepers taught me to feed them pumpkin seeds to get rid of worms naturally. Check them out on YT and FB
Thankyou Becky, you are a wealth of information 😃
P.s. I love your videos
Super helpful vid thank you! Also this outfit is on point 🙌🏾
I think my chickens may have worms.First timer here, thanks Becky.
Its also good to use food grade in their dust bath since they peck at it. Since i have spread a little around the dry ground. I never see mites anymore.
It is also natural to the enzimes help to destroy the worms or you can by medicated feed that is treated to destroy the worms like the one that burrows in the gut and is common I unclean brooding containers for the chicks often so they don’t get that parasite
I love your shows!
I use DE on my dogs for ticks and fleas (said to be good for worms as well) but its a special mix for dogs only, not food grade and it gets kind of rough on my hands as well as their coats. Will try out the food grade variety next time. Also, I'm learning from you about chickens getting these vectors as well and am now a little worried about it since keeping my dogs clean is a tough task in itself. During the tick season my house gets infested and I've even lost a couple of puppies because of tick fever.
Wow, the dogs really like it, no need to buy dog food, lol. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Becky! God bless you.
do you use the same DE as the lice and mites for worms???? And love your videos
can you please do a video on how much to give your horse and dogs and other animals
thanks i love your channel
+Scarlett Toohey-Crock go to my website and click on topics then click on horses, scroll through and you will see the video.
OMG Thank you Becky!! that is awesome
You can feed them pumkin seeds every week or month if it is bad or if they don’t have it give the seeds once a year to
Can you help me understand the huge divide with using DE? Some swear by it, and others say it killed all their chickens and it's very dangerous for their respiratory systems. I've used it in the past, but after losing a chicken to respiratory issues, I'm very nervous now to use anything that could be potentially unsafe for their respiratory systems. Thank you!
We have used it for years inside our coops. Never had a lice or mites problem. Never harmed a chicken.
Love the doggie
You are an amazing chicken lady!! thank youuuuuuuuu
Lol...Woody @ the End 😉thanx Becky!!
Thank you!!!
Thank you Becky
Question do you keep the DE away from your pig? I have my pig in the same yard as my chicken's. Pig is only outside some of the time inside the rest. I want to deform all of them but hv been told DE is dangerous for pigs?
Becky. Love the videos. How much food does an adult chicken need per day?
Chickens need approximately half a cup of feed a day.
0.25 lb per hen per day is considered the standard.
I just try to keep some in feeders allways .
Where do you order your diatomaceous earth
I'm going to try this. Thank u.
You are amazing! I love your videos
can we visit your farm so we can see and learn better? How much that would cost?
Notice that the bag says FOOD GRADE diatomaceous earth. There is a difference in types of diatomaceous earth.
Thank you Becky!! Can you please tell me..... How many cups of crumble chicken feed does it take to equal 5 pounds? My estimate ( from on-line researching) would be 15 cups. Is that correct?
@Beckyhomestead- How to get rid of fungus on chickens?
What kind of dog is woody. He so cute!!!
I purchased your book and the ratio of DE to food is very different here v the book. Please LMK if this is the most up to date.
I use DE for everything. Myself, my chickens, cat, dog we all get treated once a month😂
Don't worry my dog likes the chicken feed as well LOL. I have to feed my chickens behind the gate so my dog can't get the food. Lol
