@Becky's Homestead. 7:45. Look at how absolutely trusting and calm your little chicken is in the giant mans hands. Your all adorable and a favorite to watch and learn from.
Thanks Ms. Becky! I have 9 hens and was down to 3 to 5 eggs a day and we just thought it was cold weather. After seeing your video I took some dried cat food and some left over bacon grease from a pan where we had breakfast this morning and coated the cat food with it. We also put some oyster shells out in a bowl for them. We had 8 eggs the same day after this! Going to give them some grit tomorrow. Thanks again from a newbie chicken Mom. Much Love and Blessings
Thank you Becky...one chicken wasn't laying..more calcium and grits worked. Worked i just a few days. I order the Demetrius earth though and will use that too. So very happy...me and the chicken.
I just found you and I love what you're teaching me! We have 7 RIR's that are 24 weeks old. We are waiting for eggs! As I've watched a few of your videos about your girls, I'm concerned that we may have too many in our coop. We built a 4x6 portable coop, because we live in a neighborhood with a standard yard. The other thing is, they love to sleep in the nesting boxes. Well, some sleep in and the others roost on the sides of the boxes. There are 2 boxes and we've noticed they like 1 over the other. We have a log for them to roost, from one side to the other 4' across, but I didn't know I could move them from the boxes to the roost. I already started calling them to sit on it today and will work on that tonight. I've cleaned out the coop and the nesting boxes
In my estimation your coop is too small for 7 RIRs. They need a foot of roosting space, for example. Chickens like to sleep in a high spot on a roost. The ones who sleep in the nesting boxes are doing it because they don't have choice. Do you have a chicken run? Big chickens need about 4 square feet in the coop and about 12 outside.
I just love you. You bring so much cheer into my life with your happy and upbeat spirit. Also i have learned so much I hope my chickens are happy as yours are

Number one age. Chickens lay for a period of time and then simply get too old. Second, fall and shorter days as chickens need long days to lay. Third is nutrition. The best egg production I've ever gotten was from feeding chickens bags of wild bird seed that I bought as a pallet close out for 25 cents a 20lb bag. My young rhode island reds are producing nearly one egg per chicken per day on laying pellets and food scraps. I do have a light over their run so the days seem longer.
Becky can you address soft eggs broken when they come out of the coop, three of my leghorns at night drop them on the bottom of the coop. It's everyday.. they have grit, oyster shell and have been wormed but still do it. I give them Zolcal D and other supplements. I give them layers pellets too. .
cariad81 this is definitely late but I’m guessing they got too much protein. If there is a giant influx of bugs in their diet because of free ranging or too many treats than they will lay soft eggs. Just make sure they eat a balanced diet
Becky I love watching your videos. you have great advice, I have learned a lot from you. My girls are all so happy and healthy.I get more eggs now than ever. We just built a much bigger run, they love it.
Hey Becky thank you for the great information these are all good things to know when I do eventually get my property thank you so very much have a blessed one
Thank you for all your videos on hens. I only have 4 hens and a rooster in a 4x8 coop. They quit laying when my husband put a floor in the bottom instead of the dirt floor. I'm figuring it reduced air flow, and they aren't happy anymore. I'm either going to take the floor out, or drill some vent holes in the walls just above the floor.
I'm so happy you mentioned hot dogs. Our chickens went crazy over hot dogs. I was experimenting. They were crowing so bad when I was bbqing. They went crazy! Plus i found they like cooked hot dogs moreso over cold straight out of the pkg. As do I! 😂
@@BeckysHomestead My girls don't know we're finally getting chickens. So my dads surprising my girls in a couple weeks by bringing over a chicken coop he built. Add water to scratch and feed in bucket cover for 3- 4 days stir daily cuts feed costs more digestible. Add sunflower seeds soy bean meal. Chicken love it. Add calcium too. Absorbs in the feed
If the bottom of their coops are multipurpose sand do I still need to supplement them with grit? I know they ingest sand when pecking at the ground. I also have several bowls of clean fresh oyster shells always available to them.
What are your thoughts on using mash grains for chickens. There's an artisan distillery that give it away for free in our area by the barrel (100lbs+). What would you subsidize it with to provide proper nutrition.
Ms. Becky, first I love your channel, it is so helpful. I am fairly new to backyard chickens. And I have a few questions. I thought I was doing everything right and through this video I learned that they need grit along with the oyster shells I’ve been providing!!! I feel terrible that I’ve not been providing it. Thank you thank you thank you!! And yes, when my girls are out ranging they LOVE the cat food.
Thank u very much for ur videos. They have been very helpful to me. I had 42 chickens something got two of them last week I don't know what that I was trying to get them to free range and I didn't watch them close enough and something got them I have two different places to put my hens plus 2 sick bays. they have plenty of room I give them open access to oyster shells and grit and I mix cat food in with their egg layer food. I also mix the oil seeds and grain in the third egg-laying food but they are still eating each other pecking each other bullying each other I don't know what to do they have plenty of places to sleep there's a big run for them to go out during the day. I watched your video on deworming and I have done that I don't know what else to do could you please help
Clearly they are not happy. As soon as a chicken has the tiniest raw, red spot on it, all the other chickens peck and peck. Each hurt chicken has to be alone in it's own cage until it's sore is healed completely. 42 chickens need a huge, huge coop to be happy and healthy. @beckyshomestead Thanks so much. I just ordered grit and diatomaceous earth. I live in Arizona and figured my soil had enough grit, but I'll be adding it to their run. One problem I have is my girls not eating their calcium. I provide it daily in their feed but their shells are still too thin. I'm hoping the lack of grit has been the issue and this will resolve quickly. Thanks again!
You can use sand for grit, you always find it in their gizzard. Sand is good for them to walk on too. If your eggs have a thin shell, your chickens need calcium.
1 of my 3 quit laying several months ago. 1 was acting off for a couple days. I put her by herself and feed her extra calcium, she sprung back after 2 or 3 days.i assume thats the one thats not laying. I checked to see if she was egg bound, she wasnt. All 3 got dewormed incase she had worms. There coop is 4x4 ontop of a 4x8 run. Iv added to the run. They now have a 8x40 run. They have 4 12x12 nest boxes, their roost is about 3ft off the floor of the coop. Has plenty of ventilation, cleaned out once a week. They seem happy and healthy. They get let out a few hours a day and they free range all weekend. My dogs dont mess with em
I just want to say thanks for all your educating me I'm starting to have a little farm and I grew up on a farm and I love animals specially chickens or all birds and the sheep and goats or all animals your good teacher, what is deworms means kill the worms from your chekins bells
I love your videos…..you give the best advice with a lot of common sense and easy to understand…….thank you for that…..I love chickens as a child my grandmother always kept chickens and when I see chickens free range I’m taken back to my happy place I’m now 62 and live in the city and wish I was able to keep chickens now……❤❤❤ what’s your opinion on Wyandottes? I love the brown eggs….but not so dark as the Marans…..
Not for sure where you Iive at but you can buy their feed and nutrition at tractor supply and sometimes walmart.then we also do fresh fruit as well.say if I cut a watermelon then I throw a piece in the pen or papaya you get the deal...but we haven't had chickens in about a year.i may get more ....
Watching your video’s we decided to raise 6 hens for eggs here in Pensacola. Did all the research on coop and run design, we went with sand as the floor material and always keep it spotless. Our girls are 24 weeks old and have been laying for a few weeks which is exciting to go out and find surprises in the nest boxes. Recently we have noticed legions on these Coombs and wattles turning black that has us in a panic. We did some simply research and found that they may have Fowl Pox. In all the videos we watched or articles we read we never came across this infection. We immediately went to Tractor Supply but they were clueless, said they never heard of it which was frustrating since it is common and preventive steps can protect them from mites, fleas, and mosquitoes if a “shot” is given early in their growth 8-12 weeks. In the Panhandle mosquitoes are a problem. If I kill a million today a million more will show up tomorrow. The girls seem happy, are laying and enjoy our company. What do we do?
Jeni, our chicken adventure has been a success. Today is 4-13-22 and we still have the original 6 chickens. They continue to give us between 4 to 6 eggs a day with the occasional day off. We enjoy hearing the sounds they make and the curiosity they have in anything we do around the run. As far as the Fowl Pox, we used Crest toothpaste to seal the infected area with peppermint essential oils mixed in to ward off the mosquitoes. It worked. They are beautiful girls. Thanks for asking
I didn't get a single egg from my hens in weeks(I have 14 and normally get 4-6 each day) I tried everything to encourage them to lay more, until I went to check on them after dark in the evening and noticed they were all in the run! I looked in the house and to my surprise saw a opossum munching away at an egg! Turns out, there was a very narrow gap in the floor panels and there were multiple possums under my coop(my coop is slightly lifted off the ground due to uneven ground). I am still trying to figure out how to remove them without violating the game commission laws, I have sealed off the entryway.
Get gloves grab them by the back of the neck and their tail toss them out. Opossums put up a front but they're not violent, they're big scaredy cats, they also cannot carry rabies. I know that the smell of ammonia scares raccoons away and other predators. It might work for opossums , get some rags, soak them in ammonia and put them around your property and run where the chickens can't get to them maybe that will deter them. You could also get predator deterring devices that look like glowing eyes. Also are all 14 chickens laying age? I have nine hens who are laying age and would average 7-9 eggs everyday. Three of my hens are not ready to lay yet. What are you feeding them? When I was feeding tractor supply feed my hens would not lay. I switched them to kalmbach layer crumbles and they do excellent! Started laying. Their water also needs to be clean everyday, and if your coup gets too dirty that can make them stop laying or lay less. Chickens are finicky😅
@@lionessofel3203 I was able to deal with the opossum situation by live trapping and relocating to a different area. I also switched my hen's food around that time to purina and they thankfully returned to laying.
Becky I’d love to know what kind of chicken feed you are using, I’m tired of using this three ingredient feed and the feed you show in this video looks like exactly what I’m looking for.
Hi Becky, very interesting video, I have a 1742 deep liter flock for egg production, these are very fragile I think. Do the same things able according to the 3 issues you mentioned in this video as well as the cleaning routine?
Love the foal! What an experience to have enough land and places to ride! My eggs are all clean but I am only getting one egg, if that, out of 3 laying birds per day. The older ones appear to be molting is that why do you think. The other 2 are too young to lay. There are 2 cockerels - 7 altogether. They are free ranging from midday until dusk; and are getting grit and shell. They are on Bio Food which looks good and they have our scraps. I like the cans of fish idea - i have some pilchards, which i hate, stored! I will look at your other stuff.
I knew you would say that Becky! One of the cockerels is very young so is not competing yet he was born with the two other youngsters and they seem to have formed their own flock; next year I will have more females and give any roosters away.. How many females should I have with 2 roosters? Thanks for replying. New to the game!@@BeckysHomestead
Hello :) we recently got chickens and we have a garden, would natural stones in the garden be enough as "grit"? And are 5 chickens enough for a 5-person household? Thanks a lot for all the help that you give :)
Thank you for all your help. I love watching your videos. I need all the good advice that you and Scott provide. I wish I had watched early enough that I had not made some of the mistakes that I have made. First I bought too many little doodles. They were so tiny and cute. It sure didnt take them long to get big and messy. I still dont have a coop for them. That is another piece of advice that I should have heard. You need your coop and equipment before you get your chicks. I am learning but wish I had learned before getting the doodles.
Hi Becky my chickens I got from a rescue shelter possibly to old now it's like four weeks still no eggs sadly looks like they may have to go or be replaced they've just finished getting their fethers back after molting .I have five I might try deworming them before making any decisions as to what to do next thanks for the the info here's hoping
My chickens are resue so no idea of thier age. They don't seem keen on the multitude of chicken feed I've tried them on... so I mostly them help themselves. They free range and seem happiest foraging for bug's. They don't really seem fussed with mealworms. They love dairy. Grated cheese, cream cheese, and sour cream. I also give them spinach and apple. Winter i cook them oats and corn or peas and edamame beans and sausage.
Mine have stopped. I was getting a dozen a day or more then suddenly NONE! I do need to get them some more grit though. I tend to feed the egg shells back to them. I'll crush them up and scatter them as they are pure calcium. I know they are stressed though as the run is too small now and there is no grass left. I used to let them free range but I can't anymore due to dogs that think they are squeeky toys. I'm going to expand the run to encompass a copse of trees and buy a couple rolls of electric poultry fencing so they can free range more, maybe going back into the woods a bit. The great thing about that stuff is it's portable and I can move it around. THANKS!
Great advice Becky! I have a question...Do you put the grit and calcium source (oyster or egg shells) in a separate container or do you mix them into their feed?
Becky, you're amazing. I recently got down to one hen; we are in the Newcastle viral quarantine in Southern California ( five down to 1, not due to Newcastle!). I am down to one Americauna, can't add more due to the quarantine. How do I keep my one baby safe, healthy, and happy by itself until I can add more?
Mealworms are expensive so I raise mealworms for my chickens now. I have cat food in their crumble. I need this video though. I am having a problem with my egg layers right now. Thanks.
Hi Becky, I really learned a lot from your video today. (plan to visit you more often & will check out your book) I have been educating myself before I take on responsibility of owning any. I live in New England and since it's a colder climate I've learned that chickens like to take an annual break during winter to conserve their energy & some folks will set up lights to disrupt the hens natural cycle so they keep laying. I always thought this to be a bit cruel & self serving. WHAT DO YOU THINK? (Its so American isn't it" bigger better more faster" I think we all need to take more breaks lol) (Yes I'm an American workaholic myself)
Becky, my friend wants to raise chickens but he knows nothing about it, so this is where I come un. To tell you the truth, I my self don,t eat chicken nor do I eat eggs.but for a friend, I will try any thing, it is good to watch your video. Thank for sharing you sound you know your stuff, about every thing.
I've had been for three years now,and they have always laid eggs in a smaller storage container... Not sure if that's good or bad... Oh well. INFORMATIVE VIDEO .

Way to go. I love to garden☀️❤️☀️
Hi Becky
Thanks for all the info
At 5:15 on the video there is 2 white and brown chickens, what bread are they please?
To add calcium and add to their feed dry eggshells and pulverize in a blender. Add a heaping tablespoons and mix in the feed.
Miss Becky, Please make videos about guinea fowls? I want to learn about them.
I need to know from her too
Hi Mrs Becky I loved your Videos your joy and love of chickens came threw with great info . Now it more like a commercial 😪
Can you crush egg shells and feed them those for calcium.??
Yes but you have to clean and bake the shells.
You can use sand for grit, you always find it in their gizzard. Sand is good for them to walk on too. If your eggs have a thin shell, your chickens need calcium.
How do i feed them sand
I just love your videos. You need to have this young man in more of them. I like him already.😉
I love chickens too! I truly like all chickens but my favorite are Black Australopes because they are the best egg layers. ☀️❤️☀️
Along with your three
The Latest is the change in the feed from the feed store .
LOREE LEE she lives in Florida 😌
Thank you for sharing your expertise.
I appreciate the duel understanding
I just found your video helped me,and i am really excited about this
Watching your video’s we decided to raise 6 hens for eggs here in Pensacola.
Whatever happened with your chickens?
Jeni, our chicken adventure has been a success. Today is 4-13-22 and we still have the original 6 chickens. They continue to give us between 4 to 6 eggs a day with the occasional day off. We enjoy hearing the sounds they make and the curiosity they have in anything we do around the run.
As far as the Fowl Pox, we used Crest toothpaste to seal the infected area with peppermint essential oils mixed in to ward off the mosquitoes. It worked. They are beautiful girls. Thanks for asking
I am so glad!!! :)

Thank you Becky for such a informative video.
Your welcome☀️❤️☀️
Becky I’d love to know what kind of chicken feed you are using, I’m tired of using this three ingredient feed and the feed you show in this video looks like exactly what I’m looking for.
Hi Becky, very interesting video, I have a 1742 deep liter flock for egg production, these are very fragile I think. Do the same things able according to the 3 issues you mentioned in this video as well as the cleaning routine?
I noticed Starlings in my yard last year and that flock doubled. Other birds of all kinds come to my yard. I only have two chickens.
Love your videos, keep them coming.😊❤️
Me 2
Hi hope you're having a lovely weekend
One of a very few channels I like Thanks for all the info 😊
Becky, I love your spirit. I watch all your videos.
2 roosters will stress out 5 hens.☀️❤️☀️
I knew you would say that Becky! One of the cockerels is very young so is not competing yet he was born with the two other youngsters and they seem to have formed their own flock; next year I will have more females and give any roosters away.. How many females should I have with 2 roosters? Thanks for replying. New to the game!@@BeckysHomestead
Thanks for all the great information Becky
Thank You Becky. Great information . Great video !
Hello :) we recently got chickens and we have a garden, would natural stones in the garden be enough as "grit"? And are 5 chickens enough for a 5-person household? Thanks a lot for all the help that you give :)
We have 2 chickens for our 3 person household, this is enough as we do not eat eggs everyday/use them..
Hi Becky.....I love your videos so much.
Thank you Becky for your awesome videos!
Thank you Becky for the information
Your so welcome☀️❤️☀️
Tnx dor the infol you make a good team.
Thanks Becky! God Bless you
My chickens are resue so no idea of thier age.
I through it in the run so they can pick and scratch. ☀️❤️☀️
@@BeckysHomestead Sounds easy enough. Thank you.😊
I mix it with feed & toss around run then I have it in a separate feeder also.
@@aprilsondgeroth6326 That's a good idea too to give them a steady supply.
Oyster shell needs to be seperate so they dont get too much calcium. If you put it in their food they could get too much and damage their kidneys.
Love the vid would like to see daily vlogs
Waawo, i like ur teachings
Becky, you're amazing. I recently got down to one hen; we are in the Newcastle viral quarantine in Southern California ( five down to 1, not due to Newcastle!). I am down to one Americauna, can't add more due to the quarantine. How do I keep my one baby safe, healthy, and happy by itself until I can add more?
Never tell the government you have a flock....
❤ you are so knowledgeable Becky ! Thanks
Mealworms are expensive so I raise mealworms for my chickens now. I have cat food in their crumble. I need this video though. I am having a problem with my egg layers right now. Thanks.
Can you also give crunch eggs for calcium.
What do you use to deworm your chickens and how often?
Watch that video.
I've had been for three years now,and they have always laid eggs in a smaller storage container...
Not sure if that's good or bad... Oh well.
INFORMATIVE VIDEO .
