    Great points about what can stress out chickens. They flourish when they live in a peaceful environment, just like the rest of us!

    My chickens this year have stopped laying eggs.
    First of all they have free range get organic egg laying feed. Chicken acceptable Fruits and vegetables for snacks along with the bugs that they find around including snakes.
    I changed their layer feed... To a better quality
    Got a few eggs early spring. expensive feed $$$$$.
    I think it's now just their old age as they stopped laying eggs completely...
    Over the spring debating to get new chicks
    I should have followed my gut instinct and got some. I'll have to wait till next year spring.
    Now I have no eggs . All my hens do is scratch in the compost of which is a big help.
    I changed them back to a lower quality feed since there no longer laying.
    Thank you ....

    I currently have 17 chickens outside in 3 separate coops. They dont get to free range,but we always give them scraps,scratch grains,and layer pellets. Im gonna almost quick giving them grains and switch to an all flock pellet and see how they do. Currently theyll gobble up the grains and scraps but only nibble at the layer pellets. I just want a more nutritious diet as the grains aren't supposed to be but 10% of a birds diet. Ive had 2 die unexpectedly in recent months and i fear that their diet may of been to blame. I also keep them oyster shells and grit weekly too. Theyre still laying ok,but their 4 years old and slowing down alot.

    My chickens stopped laying when they began moulting. That was 2 months ago and the egg production has not yet resumed. :-( I don't feed them meats but I do give them soldier fly larvas and they also have a really good, varied diet. No stress that I know of. It is weird.

      I’m feeding everything doing everything recommended and have five chickens. Hardly any eggs all this year. They have their own food forest and get fresh herbs and meat every day. And they’re protected with three layers of fencing cause we live in the wilderness. It’s been frustrating.

    I get plenty of eggs and always have. When people complain that their chickens stopped laying I wonder what they're talking about.
    I did have a mite infestation once and egg production dramatically slowed until I cleared up that situation.
    My chickens have plenty of room and their nesting boxes are easily accessible.
    I've trained my dogs, Border Collie and Irish Setter, to ignore the chickens. The chickens know this. They can free range and march around the dogs with no fear. One my previous dogs was so tolerant of the chickens that when standing in the yard one day a chicken jumped up on her back. She just looked at me, "Really? I have to endure this?" The dog just stood their and waited until I walked over and pushed the chicken off.
    I always give the chickens scraps including meat - and chicken. I also have more eggs than I can use and no one to give them to so occasionally I'll cook those and feed them back to the chickens. (The dogs will get some too.)
    I do not pamper my chickens. I make sure they have feed and water. I occasionally clean out the coop, throw them scraps and let them free range. I collect _a lot_ of eggs.

    When I hang out my fly bags and they get full, I let ‘em dry out and just feed em to the chickens. My hens love it.

  • @AveryMilieu
    @AveryMilieu 9 месяцев назад

    Not just DOGS. I have a herd of feral cats who manage to break into the coop. They have taken birds off their roosts and dragged them out... The smaller ones break in and eat all the food... Between these two stressors, I haven't seen an egg since September... The herd of cats has been thinned considerably, but they still hunt fgor the easy food in the coop.
    BUT I will try to set up a couple nesting boxes lower down.
    If my birds tend to huddle together it has to do with being cold, this time of year.

    • @BeckysHomestead
      @BeckysHomestead  9 месяцев назад

      Don’t leave food in the coop. Feed twice a day, let them get their fill then no more food in the coop until dinner. Food in the coop 24/7 draws all kinds of trouble☀️❤️☀️

  • @barefootminis
    @barefootminis 9 месяцев назад +1

    Since you live down south your videos don't really take into account the cold weather. That is often why ours slow down or even stop from Nov-Mar. They don't like going out in the snow, there is nothing much to free range, and their bodies have to work hard to stay warm.

    • @BeckysHomestead
      @BeckysHomestead  9 месяцев назад

      True, but if you feed them meat every day, they will grow in plenty of down to stay warm and still lay eggs, trust me, mine lay eggs even in very cold temps. Then you have to collect frozen eggs, bring them in and let them thaw out.

      Maybe less eggs but I have heard about hens ganging up on a rooster and eventually the rooster started laying on the hens eggs but after the hens dominated the rooster and wasn't allowing him to mate with any of them he started to eat the hens eggs and the hens would go on strike and not lay eggs for 2 weeks but they still would dominate the rooster one hen actually climbed on the roosters back and she was riding around on his back the rooster was making a moaning sound and the hen on top was crowing like a rooster. But they eventually worked out so I am told.
