Fenbendazole is not an antibiotic. It is a dewormer. I was using it for gapeworm in my chickens. After the first 5 day treatment you should wait 10 days and repeat the treatment for 5 days again to catch any worm stages that weren't killed by the initial treatment. I have found that most poultry keepers suggest preventative treatments should be spring and fall in the northeast due to the conditions that favor the worms.
Your video is exactly what I needed. Thank you so much. Now I know how much the dosage is for the dewormer and which product to use. I am a new chicken owner and this was very helpful information.
This form of fenbendazole is not water soluble. It is not able to treat effectively. You actually have to administer the paste on bread or give each chicken a capsule of powdered fenbendazole. I'm just informing that this isn't doing anything for the problem and is wasting money. Poultry de-wormer 5x is the powdered capsule form. Best wishes.
This is a somewhat older video, in this video these were Rhode Island Red hens. They were great! Highly recommended. We now have a mixed flock of Austrolorps, olive eggers and copper marans. All three types are wonderful. You can go wrong if you keep your hens healthy and happy!
In my opinion, dilution is the solution! while I don’t have a ton of experience, I would imagine there’s more risk with dosage going straight. I would follow the instructions on the bottle.
Yes, the treated water should be the only source of water for them so you know that every bird has been treated. You do not have to replace it every day. Just give it a good mix daily. If you have an open water source like a bowl or pan, you should change that daily. I mix 5 gallons at a time so it lasts my birds a while.
@twiggshomestead6497 I assume this was a success? Did you have to keep administering it over and over? Till all signs were gone? About low long would it take?
How many days are you going to toss out the eggs after the 5 day treatment? Also, do you plan on doing a second treatment to make sure that you also kill the worm eggs that would also be in the chickens ready to hatch even after the 1st round of 5 day treatment killed the adult worms?
Hi! Thanks for the great questions! I spoke with my local vet on that before I did the treatment and he said 10-14 days based on the length of time they were treated for and the strength of the dosage. I toss them for 12 days and have never noticed any issues. I do perform the treatment a second time 2-3 weeks after the initial dose. Stinks to toss that many eggs for so long but, it's a sure-shot way to worm your flock.
Thanks for info. I have small, medium and large birds. Can I just give the dose suggested? Will it be enough for larger breed and not hurt the bantams?
Safeguard is the exact same medication that they give children to kill pinworms and yes, I have used it on myself and my children when they had pinworms. It was a whole lot cheaper than paying $27 per dose for every child. It only cost me $6.99 to use apple flavored horse paste. There was enough in the tube to deworm the kids twice. My doctor actually recommended it to me and of course this was years ago in the 90s.
How was the update? I was told ifthey are heavy infested sometimes the treatment block them and kill them, I use this product in paste but 1 of my hes that was super skiny died. I think I have gape worm in my flock, I now bougth another product but I dont know how much to give. Is this product a powder?
Hi, I am sorry to hear that. Sometimes if it goes on for too long, the bird will pass. I do not know much about treating for gapeworm. I do know that if you notice any worms or eggs inside the egg of the chicken, it is considered a bad case. This product is not a powder, it is a concentrated liquid.
I would use the same dose. It's diluted in water so it shouldn't harm the birds however, you should use your best judgment and probably give your local vet a call for professional advice.
Hey so I think one of my hens has worms though I’m not 100% sure. Will this medicine hurt them if I give it to them and they don’t even have worms? Also how long should you discard the eggs? Thanks!
Hey Joey, No this will not hurt them at all if they don't have worms, in fact, many chicken keepers will give this treatment to them annually as a preventative just in case they do have worms and are not showing signs. I discard the eggs for 2 weeks just to be sure. I did use the eggs for some local stray cats to help them out. I also used the eggshells in my hot compost pile. Not 100% sure if that was a good idea. My thought is; the residual dewormer will integrate into the egg shells, carry through the composting process, into the garden soil, up the root system, and into my veggies but I highly doubt it being dangerous at such a low dosage.
Ill try and worm them once per year if I do not notice any worms. They stop laying for a few months before winter sets in. Timing the wormer with that time of year/ cycle seems to be less wasteful with the withdrawal period.
Use diatomaceous earth to prevent lice, mites and worms! They can eat it and dust themselves with it! Works great! I also put it in my horses stalls to prevent fly larvae from hatching!

There is no egg withdrawal period for fenbendazole, according to the FDA and product itself.
Thanks for the info!! I played it safe and some local cats enjoyed the eggs for a few days.

It’s a all in one pigeon wormer

So do you leave the water mixture in there for 5 days and stir up every few hrs , or repeat every day for 5 days ?
Thanks! I leave it in there and mix it up. No need to waste the mixture
i imagine ivermectin would do just as well?
I’m sure. There are many ways to skin the cat as long as the birds are healthy and the eggs are safe.
I don’t believe that ivermectin kills tapeworms though, but it’s great for roundworms and lice
Great video!
Thanks!
What about different size chickens? We have younger and adult chickens. Would you use the same dose?

yes

So somebody knows whats the dosage for 1 gallon of water.
I believe you can take the dosage that I mentioned and divide it by 5.
If he used 20 ml for 5 gallon, divide 20 by 5 to find out what you need for one gallon, so 4 ml of medicine would go into one gallon of water.
