  • What if you could use a non-estrogen product instead of estrogen for your menopause? And what if that product mimicked the benefits of estrogen but not the risks of estrogen? Wouldn’t it be great to know about such products? Such products actually exist. They’re called SERMs. Watch this video for an introduction about how they work.

    Dr. Barbie, I'm so thankful that I came across your page even though it was at my low. As I watch your videos in order I now believe I was one of the poor unfortunate souls that was given antidepressants (Lexapro/Wellbutrin) after I expalined to my GYN that I was experiencing anxiety/insomnia/and depression. Mind you I did have bloodwork done and she confirmed I was indeed peri-menopause. I have to say I did feel some relief for the first 5 months but now hit an all time low with my depression. I feel as if I'm drowning and there is no one there to throw my a lifeline. I have learned so much watching your videos and you provide me with hope. I have an appt. with my GYN next month I hope she will be open to hearing me and switching me over to HRT. I know that God doesn't want us to live like this and that there has to be better options available. Thank you for all you do and for the hope you bring. XO

Although 53 years old and a mother three times i realize watching your videos from the beginning how little i knew about my own body. I am post menopausal for two years now and in these two years i had a mastectomy(ductul carcinoma insitu), a buttectomy(liposarcoma), found an aneurysm (of the heart)and found i had osteoporosis. No time to think about my menopause symptoms, which are not very severe anyway. My real concern is my osteoporosis and future health issues due to lack of estrogen or due to taking the wrong ones. Both cases were cought at early stage so i didn't have to go through any other treatments than surgeries(ie cheemo or radio)and i feel blessed for that. I already ordered your books (although i feel more confident in listening to English language than reading it (especially with your way of demonstrating everything you say). I live in a small island in Mediterranean called Cyprus and that makes it difficult to attend any of your seminars and i am very sad for that. I have been binge watching for 3 days straight and am extremely worried for my sister along with myself.I m only on video #33 but feel time is critical. I am taking nothing and my sister hasn’t been either. For me what is that window for estrogens? We have been told not to take anything I have been trying to manage with eating right exercise and just living with things. I have all of my female parts and started an early menopause. My sister had cancer young and had everything removed and hasn’t taken anything in several years. I think we need to consultation with you. So happy to have found you, I have shared your site with so many of my friends and my sister.

    This sounds like it might be the very thing. When I finally do get a hysterectomy and for the sake of endometriosis, I don't want to take actual estrogen. It would just keep growing the deposits on my bowel and wherever else they may be, but I do have a family history of osteoporosis. I already have osteoarthristis, so this is a concern regarding future bone density issues. I don't have any family history of breast cancer and having worked in the breast unit, I know how to correctly check for lumps or other issues. I do so regularly and having something neutral sounds good for this area. I also have no cardiovascular issues, in fact my BP and pulse are the lower end of normal. My cholesterol is fine and there is no evidence of insulin deficiency. I look forward to the next video to pick out something that may be right for me, when it is time to start something. I'm still perimenopausal so I haven't ceased producing at least some of my own estrogen, but when I finally convince my consultant to do so, I expect to have a TAHBSO. Maybe it will also help with the severely dry skin and worsening of pre existing eczema. I take clonidine for hot flushes which is working fairly well at a very low dose, so this isn't my biggest challenge. Many thanks (as ever), as even I hadn't heard of this type of drug before.

    • @MenopauseTaylor
      @MenopauseTaylor  7 лет назад

      You see! Information is so powerful. You're going to find that you have many more options than you ever imagined. We're still just on the estrogen category, and we've got all the other hormones to cover. And then there's all the non-hormonal options, which we'll address with each specific symptom of menopause. You're making really good use of this education, Loraine.

    Awesome stuff thanks Barbie 💜🎀. Does one actually need estrogen at all??? I suppose a very open ended question, however I am currently on nothing at all and not sure if I am doing damage to my body with this decision? Love your tutorials and can never wait for the next 😀😀

    • @MenopauseTaylor
      @MenopauseTaylor  7 лет назад +20

      Well, Terri, you're really getting right down to it with that one!
      Think about it this way. As a female, you've had estrogen coursing through your body since puberty, and nearly every cell in your body has become dependent on it: your brain, your heart, your bones, your skin, your vagina ... and on and on. Then, bam! It's gone.
      If we were talking about any other substance - insulin, thyroid hormone, Vitamin D, you name it - we would call it a "deficiency state." Your body would not function properly without it. And that deficiency state would constitute a disease that made you feel badly and function sub-optimally.
      So, why in the world do we lull ourselves into thinking that living the last 1/3 to 1/2 of our lives without estrogen is okay?
      You know, the truth is that we're supposed to die at about age 50 (according to Mother Nature's plan). Humans and two species of whales are the only animals that even have a menopause. All the others die once their reproductive tasks are at an end.
      So, the way I see it is this: You know that saying, "Diamonds are a girl's best friend"? Well, it's wrong. It's estrogen! Estrogen is a girl's best friend! And without it, your body suffers in the short term and in the long term.
      So much of what you've heard that has scared you away from estrogen is nothing but myths and misconceptions. So, yes, we DO NEED estrogen. But the choice of whether or not to take it is up to the individual woman.
      I can tell you this: If men suddenly lost their testosterone, they'd replace it faster than you can say, "replacement!"

    • @terribaldin2291
      @terribaldin2291 7 лет назад

      Menopause Barbie what you say has certainly made me think and answered my open ended question 😄😄 I just often wonder why so much hype about cancers and the negative side of artificial estrogens being put back into our bodies 😒😒😒! It almost feels like we don't have much choice in order to feel like women and live life to our fullest potential - does lack of estrogen effect our skin too?

    • @MenopauseTaylor
      @MenopauseTaylor  7 лет назад +6

      It absolutely affects your skin ...in a major way. Without estrogen, you'll have dry, dry skin that wrinkles and makes you look old. I'll be covering that in the videos.
      Every part of your body is dependent on estrogen. Every part suffers without it.

I do have mild osteoporosis. Many thanks love your videos...Regards

    • @MenopauseTaylor
      @MenopauseTaylor  7 лет назад +4

      Deb,
      If you have osteoporosis, you're MUCH better off taking estrogen! Progesterone will actually make your osteoporosis worse. But because you have your uterus, you have to take both. Estrogen will prevent a heart attack, halt progression of your osteoporosis, and prevent Alzheimer's Disease.
      Another alternative is to consider a SERM.
      You'll find that when you combine progesterone (to prevent uterine cancer) with estrogen or a SERM, you won't need much progesterone to do the trick, and you won't have the yucky side effects of progesterone (drowsiness, moodiness, depression, and worsening osteoporosis).
      Be sure you go to a GYNECOLOGIST for your menopause management. Many other providers (including Family Practitioners, General Practitioners, Internists, and every kind of Alternative & Complementary provider) will not have enough eduction in menopause to know all this.

    Are there foods or over the counter creams that are nearly as strong as a SERM?

    • @MenopauseTaylor
      @MenopauseTaylor  5 лет назад +4

      No. One of the biggest principles of success in managing your menopause is to understand that no food, nor any herb, nor any over-the-counter product can function as effectively as a pharmaceutical option. But, there are both advantages AND disadvantages to every option. Your job is to tailor all the advantages and disadvantages of each option to YOU. Nothing is right for all women.
      Even compounded hormones are not as effective as pharmaceutical products. That's because the compounding industry is not overseen by any regulatory agency. The manufacturers can produce anything without having to prove it's reliable, consistent, or pure.
      Remember: Food is food. Hormones are hormones. When you start thinking you can use one to compensate for the other, you're in la la land. If you were hungry, could you satisfy your hunger by taking a hormone? No. Well, if you're deficient in a hormone, you can't correct the deficiency with food alone. You may be able to do that with a vitamin deficiency, but that's because foods contain all the vitamins we need (unless our bodies make them). The same is not true of hormones.
      Makes sense, doesn't it.

      You won't get enough estrogen replacement to protect against osteoporosis or Alzheimer's disease with food or herbal sources of estrogen. But they also don't cause breast pain. And breast pain does NOT mean you're putting your breast at risk for breast cancer. So, eat all the phytoestrogens you want.
      As for vitamin & mineral supplements, take whatever you tend to lack in your diet.

    Is Rhodiola root a SERM and can I take it if I am on estrogen?

    • @MenopauseTaylor
      @MenopauseTaylor  7 месяцев назад

      Rhodiola rosea is a plant that grows in the Arctic regions of Europe, Asia, and North America. While many have used it for treating anxiety and depression, there is no research to prove or support its effectiveness for either these or any other medical disorder. The U.S FDA has issued several warnings to the manufacturers for making false claims about its safety. The claim that it is good for heart health is one of them.

    Hi Menopause Barbie! Thank you for taking time to do these very informative videos. I am actually shopping around for a new Gyn. I am 53 and not exactly sure where I am in the process. I have not had a period for three years. I have night sweats and a few of the symptoms. So I could be still going through or post. Anyhow my concern is that I have fibroids which I thought was a product of too much estrogen. I also have an endometrial cyst which is raising my ca125 levels. My Gyn says they will shrink eventually. I was looking into UFE. My Gyn scared me with this ca125 level. I like to rule out things so I got MRI because one of the ovaries couldn't be seen. But again as you have said the ovaries shrink and this is normal. So I went into detective mode. He said perhaps I need to see a hematologist. I freaked. That's when I got a endometrial biopsy and got a MRI to rule out things. Anyway, my question is that I believe I need to balance my hormones out, will this affect the fibroids.

      Okay, let's separate things out here.
      First, your phase of menopause. By definition, because you have gone at least 12 consecutive months without a period, you are post-menopausal. I taught you that in tutorial 10. (I sure hope your'e watching these videos in order. If not, you're going to be shooting in the dark!)
      Next, your fibroids. Menopause usually results in shrinkage of fibroids. They are usually benign & require no treatment if you have no symptoms that concern you. You do need to monitor them.
      Next, your ovarian cyst(s). All ovarian cysts in menopausal women require evaluation, and usually require removal. CA 125 is not a screening test for ovarian cancer. It can be elevated for many reasons that have nothing to do with cancer.
      Next, and endometrial biopsy is a test of the lining inside your uterus, and is a different issue from both your fibroids and your ovarian cyst(s).
      Until you figure out what's going on with your uterus and ovaries, you shouldn't take any hormones.

    Do SERMS help with hair loss when you do not have ovaries?

      No. SERMS have absolutely nothing to do with hair.

    What do think about over the counter Amberen?

    • @MenopauseTaylor
      @MenopauseTaylor  7 лет назад

      Amberen is succinct acid, which is a dietary supplement for regulating acidity. It also contains some amino acids, Vitamin E and some minerals. So, it falls into the category of vitamins and minerals. It contains no hormones or ingredients with hormonal activity. It's marketed for menopause, but there's nothing in it that really targets "menopause" per se.
      I always say that it doesn't matter what I think. All that matters is what you think. But it's important for you to know what you're taking.

    i had to go on OSPHENA,(NOT SURE SPELLINING OFF HAND) BUT IM GETTING OFF OF THEM IVE GAINED TONS OF WEIGHT,IM GRUMPY AND CANT SLEEP ,OH YA LETS NOT FORGET HOTFLASHES WORST THEN BEFORE...JUST PLAIN SUKS

    • @MenopauseTaylor
      @MenopauseTaylor  7 лет назад +1

      Yep, a common side effect of Osphena is hot flashes. The weight gain is not common. That could be due to menopause itself. Our metabolism slows down a bunch at menopause, and it may have nothing at all to do with the Osphena.
      You see, it's trial and error for all of us. You still have other options, and you deserve to be happy with how you manage your menopause.
