I remember seeing this movie as a kid in the early 80's. After Saturday morning cartoons the local TV would play midday monster movies like Godzilla and King Kong. This was on the list. Loved monster movies as a kid.
I saw this on BBC in the 80s but at about 11.30/12 am , may have been bbc2, we used to get lovely double bills back then. Checking the daily paper esp on Fri, sat to see what was coming on...universal double bills, sci fi like alien, outland , Solent green , omega man etc ...awesome childhood..then video came out and my life was transformed as a 10yr old horror fan.😊 Happy days
I remember this scaring the shit outta me as a kid. I was around maybe 8 years old and we were learning about dinosaurs in school and I thought giant ants would be like dinosaurs. This film was on the television and my parents knew I was dying to watch it so they let me stay up late. Five minutes into it and I ran into my room and hid under the covers crying in terror.
25 years back when I was a little kid this movie was a traumatic experience. Watching it now I can still feel my heart pumping. Supersized ants just look so scary and murderous!
Awwww, the drive-in theaters!!!! I saw it at the drivein as well. Was hooked on H. G. Wells at that time. Could not read enough of him. This is a cool movie!!! I really liked it!
All three movies you mentioned are terrific B movies. I saw "Food of the Gods" at the drive-in with my dad and cousin in 1976. My dad took me to see "Grizzly" at the indoor cinema later that year. I didn't even know about "Empire of the Ants" until I happened to see it on regular TV sometime in 1980, but I absolutely loved it.
Mary Mother of God!! This movie frightened the Bejesus out of me as a child one night when it came on the local Saturday Night Macabre TV feature. Poor Joan Collins. This was filmed in South Florida in and around Belle Glade and Clewiston Florida. Part was filmed at the Glades Coop Sugar Mill which was just down the road from where we lived. The actors stayed for a while at the Holiday Inn in Belle Glade which had a bar that we used to hang out in on the weekend. I saw two of their Police prop cars parked in the parking lot one day. It was pretty cool at the time. Ages ago though.
I was in Florida in 1976 watching them film this. I was standing just outside the frame when they pulled over to use a phone booth. I got a large plastic eye off one off the ant props. I saw the people in the caged trucks. They were used for sugar cane. that's a sugar cane plant in the movie located in Belle Glade Florida.
