Also so you know, datsyuk is still playing too. he plays for his hometown now, not ska st petersberg. in the last two games of the playoffs (they had a first round exit right before covid19) and scored two goals and an assist. so datsyuk is still playing too.

Thank you, NHL! Documentaries like this one remind me how blessed and privileged I am to be a Red Wings fan. This franchise went through a lot of tough times and we will get through the rebuild together because we are the family and families should stick together like a strong glue, espesially in most difficult times. As a devils fan I apologize for the 95 sweep and it was cool the devils played in the last game. That was so moving and any hockey fan can appreciate the history of the red wings
The 3 dislikes were from Lemieux and two other Avs fans.. But seriously. Incredible building to watch a hockey game in. From arriving on the People Mover to parking in the structure and walking through the gerbil tunnels, or walking up those stairs..I'll never forget walking through the cramped concourse only to walk through those red curtains to the seating area and looking up and seeing all those banners and smelling that smell..that "Joe smell" I will forever miss the beat-up red seats, the goal horn, the stickiness of the floor from tens of thousands of spilled pop and beers, and the countless memories that were made there. Farewell once again Joe.
Seeing Yzerman hand the trophy to Konstantinov after the tragic limo crash is a memory that will always stay with me. I really miss this era of the sport. As an '89, Stevie Y and Burnaby Joe were the greatest role models a kid growing up in Canada could ask for. Born and raised a Nucks fan, The greatest hockey I ever watched was that of the Wings vs Avs of the 90's/00's. I know Lemieux and Gretzky are the GOAT's with Orr, Howe, The Rocket etc all in the convo, but given my birth year I caught the back end of their careers or old grainy footage and could not truly appreciate the skill level they played at. with Mario and Wayne I was only lucky enough to catch each once live as they dusted up the Canucks. Yzerman and Sakic feed the Nucks on a weekly basis.
I grew up in East Germany and was always amazed about the "Sbornaja" (Russian national team), then we deflected to the west, and I learned about the NHL and a guy named Gretzky. I liked the NHL from then on... But from day one I fell in love with the Red Wings (and individually, Mario Lemieux as the most skilled man on ice I ever saw). I remember their rise in the late 80s, only to see the Red Wings losing in round one year after year (so it seemed)... Then came the "Russian Five". The re-birth of the Sbornaja. I felt sent back in time. The best hockey played I ever saw, after the already great team that lost to the Devils the season before, then finally... winning the Cup. It was long overdue... then the tragic loss of Konstantinov... But the best was yet to come: the "All star team of all stars". The 2002 Red Wings... Yzerman, Fedorov, Shanahan, Hull, Larionov, Lidstrom, Robitaille, Chelios, Hasek, and so on... even a young Datsyuk already around... The greatest hockey team put together in the history of mankind (not statistically, but it felt like)... And what the Red Wings became of nowadays. I still can´t believe it.
The JLA was an absolutely amazing place to go for our Wings games. The standing room tickets were only $26. The standing room area was against the wall below the second deck right behind the first level seats. In my opinion it was the best view of the game for the price. Most memorable moment was when we scored two short handed goals 13 seconds apart against Patric Roy and the Avalanche towards the end of the second period. It was incredible watching him lose his mind as he was sent to the bench for the remainder of the game. Absolutely epic!
I played on the Joe Louis ice when I was 13 years old for a hockey tournament. One day I'll never forget. That arena had so much character in it and gave you so much appreciation for hockeytown. Even as a flyers fan, I'll still always have a soft spot for Detroit and their awesome history
I played here too man! Scored a goal! Pee wee B level . I will never forget. I watched endless games as a kid. Every game that was on TV I watched and went to about 20 games id bet at the joe. Such a special arena. Absolutely the best franchise in all of sports. Such a special team. Just believe in the wings and they will show you so.e absolute magic years! Go wings! I mean i cried this whole night watching the last game and ceremony but that’s because im born 45 mins from Detroit and have lived in Michigan my whole life, been on ice skates since i was 2. People don’t understand what this team means to us, same with the Joe.

I've been to LCA once and it is a fine place. I'm certain you'll enjoy yourself. I am a RW fan and I was fortunate to witness Dylan Larkin score the winning shootout goal.
Don’t listen to the hate. I grew up going to the Joe on special occasions because we moved when I was young. I went to the Pepsi center a dozen times a year. LCA is a great place to see a game. It’s better than any other place in the league as far as I know, and I’ve been to dozens. Vancouver is pretty nice. Toronto is obviously nice but the cost is outrageous. Boston sucks.
I’m 23 years old. Until the age of 20 Joe Louis Arena was all I knew as home for Red Wings Hockey and the Detroit home for WWE. My parents also took me to a circus show there, and Toy Story 2 on Ice when I was little. Little Caesars Arena is amazing, but the nostalgia for that old barn on the Detroit River will never die. I miss The Joe every time I watch hockey nowadays
I’m a Pens fan but the story of the 90’s Red Wings is one of the most inspiring in sports history. I loved watching that team, especially the Russian 5. And then 10 or so years later to watch the Penguins do the impossible and lift the Cup at Joe Louis after losing to the Wings the year before, was really something. Long live the Joe!
I was there at The Joe in early 1980, just after it had opened up. 37 plus years later living in and out of Michigan as a Detroit Red Wing fan, I just want to thank The Ilitch family, Jim Devellano, the entire Red Wings management, scouts and staff, and obviously the great players who donned the Red Winged Wheel for the incredible memories! Nobody Rocked like The Joe come Stanley Cup Playoff Time! Awesome fans in an Awesome Atmosphere! We miss The Joe, but we'll never forget the memories that were made at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, Michigan!! Let's Go Red Wings!!!!

Konstantinov was an absolute pleasure to watch play that shut down defense. His ability to step up and throw the body was incredible. His vision was insane. And not to mention, he had the most intense focus I've ever seen. A shame his career wasn't longer. I hope kids today get to watch his highlight real and learn what it's like to be automatic in your role
Truly a beautiful building that contains many memories. Had 4 opportunities to go to the Joe. Every time I was there, it was electrifying. It wasn't even the playoffs. I will never forget the legacy and the memories of the Red Wings dynasty and the Joe.
JLA was an institution, every Red Wings fan knew that point blank and the building was aleays rockin during thr regular season and when it was playoff time everyone knew what to expect. With banners everywhere, the statues and the octopus signify the Motor City now since it has departed we can always remember what JLA gave us. JLA gave us unity, sportsmanship and dream that have came true. JLA you are gone but you WILL NOT be forgotten!! Thank you for the memories!!! Let's Go Red Wings!!!

True. Went to the Joe for a Rangers and Red Wings game , my first time in Detroit. I felt safer walking from my hotel to the Joe and back than I did walking in my own neighborhood in New York City .
You can change the color of the seats or the place in which we grew up watching, but you can’t change the spirit and family that this franchise holds, we’ll be back.
God I hope the Leafs are currently writing a similar story to the resurgence of the Red Wings in the 90s. I seriously still get chills thinking of the Red Wings-Avalanche playoffs series while I was growing up. Great memories.
As a kid who grew up in the suburbs of Detroit, playing hockey my whole life. Even played on “The Joe’s” ice as a kid during a pregame event. I just literally cried. I don’t know how many games I’ve watched at the joe, but I do know that building had a soul

I attended 4 games there. Saw Terry Sawchuks number raised to the rafters at a Sunday game vs Buffalo. Saw Probert make the Joe Electric! A great arena!
I've been a Wings fan since the early 90s, from UK and now in Canada. I never got to see the Joe - that's my only regret. Heart and soul Red Wings fan. They got me through a few tough times in life. Loved this video.
I made the trip one year from Minnesota to Detroit so I could experience a game in Joe Louis. I took the tour and everything. I absolutely loved the arena. I have done the same at the xcel energy center in Minnesota but there was something special about the Joe that Minnesota couldn't match. Sadly Iginla scored in a shootout on mrazek to win it. -.-
Very nice documentary. I could've watched another 2 hrs. if the producers wanted to go more in-depth. Saw 20 games at Olympia before the move, and many games during The Joe era, including the 1980 All Star Game. Before the turnaround, would buy the cheap seats in the upper bowl, find an empty area of seats (there were plenty) and move to the lower bowl. Sat in Sec 227B Row 23. for 24 years as a season ticket holder starting in 1987. Was never a fan of the building, but was very fortunate to have been a part of Mr I's vision. Heartbreaks and championships, special memories with friends and family. Being there for the Cuos in '97 and '02 were lifelong dreams come true. Thank you Mr. Ilitch!
I think this deserved at least a good 15-20 minutes more, to cover the period Post-2002. It was really glossed over in many ways. I think an hour and a half for this as a total run time woulda been perfect so that could be fleshed out more.
I grew up going to games at JLA. Born in 82, this whole documentary hit home and felt like it was a chronicling of some of the best years of my life and the Wings were a huge huge part of it. Detroit has hockey deeply woven into its culture. Makes me realize how lucky I am to have experienced all of this. Very well done documentary that captures the essence of what many of us locally felt and experienced during this amazing time in Detroit and Red Wing history.

I was there for the last game. It was also my first NHL game. But I was still incredibly glad to see it go. I had watched every Red Wings game on TV from 2009 until that point, and The Joe still felt like a home away from home up here in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
this really hits in the feels. in 2002, and again in 2008, i rocked my baby daughters to sleep watching the Wings win the cup. My older daughter especially will always tie into my love for the Wings.
I'm pretty sure I cried for 45 of this videos 71 minutes, maybe more. As a life-long Red Wings fan, this just hits all the notes - the Detroit Red Wings have become much more than just a team and no matter where I end up, I will ALWAYS be a Red Wings fan until the day I die. If you waited 10 mins into a game .You could sit where ever you could find a empty seat as the ushers never asked for a ticket stub. Just hoped no one came late and found you in their seat. I remeber buying nose bleeds and sitting 6 rows behind ozzy. Loved that place.
Konstantinov was the best defenseman in the league before he got hurt. It didn’t always show up on the stat sheet but he never made a mistake. Imagine him and Lidstrom on a pairing for another 6-8 years...
First NHL game ever attended was at this arena with my dad and many more followed, and absolute atmosphere that place was when it was on fire! Always had number 19 as a kid playing hockey because of Yzerman, RIP Joe Louis Arena.

I was helping coach the defense for a northeast D1 university 3 seasons ago, and my God the difference, even in the college game now as compared to when I was younger. There is no defense at all now.. I don't know what that kid above us is talking about lol! They teach you now as a defensemen to try and create a turnover when your alot closer to the crease.???? Why? Lol! Whatever happened to taking the man off the puck as to create a turnover at the blue line? The defensmen now all play like they are forwards.. scared to battle in the corners, out front of the net, and of physicality. The forwards don't hardly back check, always slack on their assignments, and float like there is no tomorrow. I won't even call it a sport anymore.. but a game.. and it's been made to score easy because they couldn't do it without the rule changes from 2004 till 2016. Why could they score in the 80s but not when the new generation was coming into the league? They needed help and a back rub like all these other kids now a days lol! It's flipping true, man. I feel as though when Joe Louis arena was retired, so was Hockeytown. I still haven't been able to bring myself to step foot in LCA. Not for hockey, basketball, or even a concert. I'm disappointed that the next generation will not be able to experience hockey at the Joe. It's storied history with so many the Hall of Fame players. Home of all of the banners those players earned and one of, if not the greatest, rivalries in all sports where some of the best hockey to ever be played was housed. There is not yet another arena in Detroit that can rival the Joe.
I can't watch these things without crying like a little girl with a skinned knee. The russian 5 movie and the probert movie really get me. All the cup year dvd's get me too. But the russian 5 one really got me as Vladimir konstantinov was my all time favorite red wing. Still have a mint condition jersey from 1995 I bought at the joe when I was 13.
My brother and I got off work at 7pm after a 12 hour day covered in soot/lead dust from blasting rust and lead off a Southfield freeway overpass & headed to the D to be part of the party downtown outside of the Joe! The city was so full it was like a Bad Boy's champ parade and it was just game 2 😃

That building is where I became a hockey fan. It was hockey school. I learned the game of hockey at that building. It’s similar to me to that of the college I went to.
I've been a red wing fan since 2010 and I've been heard of the great history of this franchise. Things may be tough right now but best believe hockeytown will rise again.

Don’t listen to the hate. I grew up going to the Joe on special occasions because we moved when I was young. I went to the Pepsi center a dozen times a year. LCA is a great place to see a game. It’s better than any other place in the league as far as I know, and I’ve been to dozens. Vancouver is pretty nice. Toronto is obviously nice but the cost is outrageous. Boston sucks.
I’m 23 years old. Until the age of 20 Joe Louis Arena was all I knew as home for Red Wings Hockey and the Detroit home for WWE. My parents also took me to a circus show there, and Toy Story 2 on Ice when I was little. Little Caesars Arena is amazing, but the nostalgia for that old barn on the Detroit River will never die. I miss The Joe every time I watch hockey nowadays
I’m a Pens fan but the story of the 90’s Red Wings is one of the most inspiring in sports history. I loved watching that team, especially the Russian 5. And then 10 or so years later to watch the Penguins do the impossible and lift the Cup at Joe Louis after losing to the Wings the year before, was really something. Long live the Joe!
I was there at The Joe in early 1980, just after it had opened up. 37 plus years later living in and out of Michigan as a Detroit Red Wing fan, I just want to thank The Ilitch family, Jim Devellano, the entire Red Wings management, scouts and staff, and obviously the great players who donned the Red Winged Wheel for the incredible memories! Nobody Rocked like The Joe come Stanley Cup Playoff Time! Awesome fans in an Awesome Atmosphere! We miss The Joe, but we'll never forget the memories that were made at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, Michigan!!

I couldn't imagine being there when it opened! No paint on the walls, no blue ceiling, clean red seats, no "smell", i'd imagine very plain looking. That's cool you were able to go so long ago.

Konstantinov was an absolute pleasure to watch play that shut down defense. His ability to step up and throw the body was incredible. His vision was insane. And not to mention, he had the most intense focus I've ever seen. A shame his career wasn't longer. I hope kids today get to watch his highlight real and learn what it's like to be automatic in your role

Truly a beautiful building that contains many memories. Had 4 opportunities to go to the Joe. Every time I was there, it was electrifying. It wasn't even the playoffs. I will never forget the legacy and the memories of the Red Wings dynasty and the Joe.

JLA was an institution, every Red Wings fan knew that point blank and the building was aleays rockin during thr regular season and when it was playoff time everyone knew what to expect. With banners everywhere, the statues and the octopus signify the Motor City now since it has departed we can always remember what JLA gave us. JLA gave us unity, sportsmanship and dream that have came true. JLA you are gone but you WILL NOT be forgotten!! Thank you for the memories!!!

True. Went to the Joe for a Rangers and Red Wings game , my first time in Detroit. I felt safer walking from my hotel to the Joe and back than I did walking in my own neighborhood in New York City .

As a kid who grew up in the suburbs of Detroit, playing hockey my whole life. Even played on “The Joe’s” ice as a kid during a pregame event. I just literally cried. I don’t know how many games I’ve watched at the joe, but I do know that building had a soul

I attended 4 games there. Saw Terry Sawchuks number raised to the rafters at a Sunday game vs Buffalo. Saw Probert make the Joe Electric! A great arena!

I've been a Wings fan since the early 90s, from UK and now in Canada. I never got to see the Joe - that's my only regret. Heart and soul Red Wings fan. They got me through a few tough times in life. Loved this video.

I made the trip one year from Minnesota to Detroit so I could experience a game in Joe Louis. I took the tour and everything. I absolutely loved the arena. I have done the same at the xcel energy center in Minnesota but there was something special about the Joe that Minnesota couldn't match. Sadly Iginla scored in a shootout on mrazek to win it. -.-
I've been a Red Wing fan since I've been 4 years old. This had me in tears multiple times.
Very nice documentary. I could've watched another 2 hrs. if the producers wanted to go more in-depth. Saw 20 games at Olympia before the move, and many games during The Joe era, including the 1980 All Star Game. Before the turnaround, would buy the cheap seats in the upper bowl, find an empty area of seats (there were plenty) and move to the lower bowl. Sat in Sec 227B Row 23. for 24 years as a season ticket holder starting in 1987. Was never a fan of the building, but was very fortunate to have been a part of Mr I's vision. Heartbreaks and championships, special memories with friends and family. Being there for the Cuos in '97 and '02 were lifelong dreams come true. Thank you Mr. Ilitch!
I think this deserved at least a good 15-20 minutes more, to cover the period Post-2002. It was really glossed over in many ways. I think an hour and a half for this as a total run time woulda been perfect so that could be fleshed out more.
This is an amazing documentary about The Joe. My greatest regret as a Red Wings Fan is not attending a game there 😥
I grew up going to games at JLA. Born in 82, this whole documentary hit home and felt like it was a chronicling of some of the best years of my life and the Wings were a huge huge part of it.
Detroit has hockey deeply woven into its culture. Makes me realize how lucky I am to have experienced all of this.
Very well done documentary that captures the essence of what many of us locally felt and experienced during this amazing time in Detroit and Red Wing history.

I was there for the last game. It was also my first NHL game. But I was still incredibly glad to see it go. I had watched every Red Wings game on TV from 2009 until that point, and The Joe still felt like a home away from home up here in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

this really hits in the feels. in 2002, and again in 2008, i rocked my baby daughters to sleep watching the Wings win the cup. My older daughter especially will always tie into my love for the Wings.

As a life-long Red Wings fan, this just hits all the notes - the Detroit Red Wings have become much more than just a team and no matter where I end up, I will ALWAYS be a Red Wings fan until the day I die. When someone asks me where I'm from, I usually say "Hockeytown" - LGRW!
If you waited 10 mins into a game .You could sit where ever you could find a empty seat as the ushers never asked for a ticket stub. Just hoped no one came late and found you in their seat. I remeber buying nose bleeds and sitting 6 rows behind ozzy. Loved that place.

Konstantinov was the best defenseman in the league before he got hurt. It didn’t always show up on the stat sheet but he never made a mistake. Imagine him and Lidstrom on a pairing for another 6-8 years...
They may have won another cup, especially if Fetisov and Larionov were 3 or 4 years younger before they got to Detroit

First NHL game ever attended was at this arena with my dad and many more followed, and absolute atmosphere that place was when it was on fire! Always had number 19 as a kid playing hockey because of Yzerman, RIP Joe Louis Arena.

I was helping coach the defense for a northeast D1 university 3 seasons ago, and my God the difference, even in the college game now as compared to when I was younger. There is no defense at all now.. I don't know what that kid above us is talking about lol! They teach you now as a defensemen to try and create a turnover when your alot closer to the crease.???? Why? Lol! Whatever happened to taking the man off the puck as to create a turnover at the blue line? The defensmen now all play like they are forwards.. scared to battle in the corners, out front of the net, and of physicality. The forwards don't hardly back check, always slack on their assignments, and float like there is no tomorrow. I won't even call it a sport anymore.. but a game.. and it's been made to score easy because they couldn't do it without the rule changes from 2004 till 2016. Why could they score in the 80s but not when the new generation was coming into the league? They needed help and a back rub like all these other kids now a days lol! It's flipping true, man. Tell me it isn't lol! Have a good day today, brother

I feel as though when Joe Louis arena was retired, so was Hockeytown. I still haven't been able to bring myself to step foot in LCA. Not for hockey, basketball, or even a concert. I'm disappointed that the next generation will not be able to experience hockey at the Joe. It's storied history with so many the Hall of Fame players. Home of all of the banners those players earned and one of, if not the greatest, rivalries in all sports where some of the best hockey to ever be played was housed. There is not yet another arena in Detroit that can rival the Joe.

I can't watch these things without crying like a little girl with a skinned knee. The russian 5 movie and the probert movie really get me. All the cup year dvd's get me too. But the russian 5 one really got me as Vladimir konstantinov was my all time favorite red wing. Still have a mint condition jersey from 1995 I bought at the joe when I was 13.

My brother and I got off work at 7pm after a 12 hour day covered in soot/lead dust from blasting rust and lead off a Southfield freeway overpass & headed to the D to be part of the party downtown outside of the Joe! The city was so full it was like a Bad Boy's champ parade and it was just game 2 😃

I’ve played at the Joe, I’ve sat front row at the Joe and I sat in an executive suite at the Joe, 3 games, 3 core memories.
As a hockey fan going to a game at the joe was a surreal experience.
That building is where I became a hockey fan. It was hockey school. I learned the game of hockey at that building. It’s similar to me to that of the college I went to.
I've been a red wing fan since 2010 and I've been heard of the great history of this franchise. Things may be tough right now but best believe hockeytown will rise again.
