And this is where we realised this show wasn't just a comedy. That it could do drama, tragedy, high stakes and epic situations as good as any other Trek series had.
And boy, didn’t this season ender immediately raise the stakes in the first few minutes? Amazing series!
HERE HEEERE. It is AMAAAAZIIING.😁👏🏻👏🏻
Normally I hate when characters sacrifices themselves, but the look of pure joy on Shax's face and that maniacal laugh... he really was having the best day of his life.
Yup, he wouldn't have it any other way. He got to go out in a cool explosion punching an enemy in the face.
"TODAY IS AN EXCELLENT DAY TO DIE!"
He reminds me a lot of Wrecker from The Bad Batch
Your faces when the Titan turns up with the Next Gen music? That was me all over! Lower Decks consistently sticks the landing on season finales.
Oh, goodness, yes. I mean, not to oversell it or pump up your expectations, Kat and Paula, but this particular Trek show is always particularly good with the season finales.
#saveLowerDecks
@@blondiewan3331Oh HECK YEAH. Especially that season 3 final with all the ships. That was freaking insane and soo brilliant as a compilation. The list man jeeesus.🤯🤯🤯😄❤️
Peanut Hamper is a parody of every episode that introduces a new character out of nowhere, who just so happens to have just the right set of skills/abilities to solve whatever the problem of the week is.
"When I wrote that episode, it was in a really dark time where there was a lot of nationalism and fascism re-rising in Europe, and obviously we have a real problem with that here [in the U.S.] as well. And for me, I wanted to find an entity that Starfleet could not be focusing on, that could then have been built up in power. And that line about, ‘Oh, aren’t these guys a joke?’ ‘Well, they’re not a joke anymore’-that feels to me like a lot of what we’re dealing with right now: that dangerous people are dangerous, even if you didn’t know they were." - Mike McMahan to IGN in 2020
I didn't know that was the idea, very on point.
Oh wow, I didn’t know about this. That feels pretty on point now I think about it. Very clever.
I thought it was more about how Lower Decks was underestimated like the Pakleds... but this works too. This works very well.
"Those Old Scientists"
I count that as a lower decks episode
I love that description
They won't see that for a while.
@@Lordoftheapes79Do they have plans to watch Strange New Worlds? Would be great to see those reactions, I really enjoyed that series too.
Quite!
Shaxs. The most Klingon non-Klingon in all of Star Trek. He just absolutely embodied their "today is a good day to die" philosophy
Shaxs of the House Martok
@@Vectorspace000probably served with the Klingons during the Dominion War
Kat’s face at Riker’s voice
I swear your pre and post episode conversations are as entertaining as the reactions. Lower Decks only gets better each season.
One of my favorite callbacks! First episode, Mariner's talking about how they can make Boimler the new sword guy. And when they take on the Pakleds, who's rocking a sword? Bradward Boimler.
"They are not of the body"
Chekov's Gun moment; back in Episode 2, while Rutherford was going thru divisions, Shaxs said this: "No greater honor than to die beside you in battle." So, yeeeeeeah...
I honestly got teary eyed when the Titan showed up and I got a new experience of hearing the TNG theme again
My favorite little moment was the "I'm so over your crap" look on Deanna's face at the "factor of 5, 6, 7, 8" line.
"Oh...the jazz...."
"Does that make you mad? Bye!" Love it!
Transphobes are P'takhs with NO honour! They can all go straight to Gre'thor.
Fun little background detail: the clapped-out shuttle Shaxs and Rutherford take has been built by the Lower Deckers over the course of the season, it's what they're doing when they hang out in that room. You can see it get more complete as episodes pass. There's a little drawing of the four of them on the door.
Lower decks never fails at a season finale.❤
16:40 THIS is what made Riker's Titan CANONICAL.
Peanut Hamper is the worst. I love her.
The decision to use the Pakleds, of all people, as the antagonists was _inspired!_ A c-list villain is the perfect match for a show about the low-status "background extras" of Star Trek, and they did a great job of playing them for the perfect blend of comedy and drama!
(And yes, Tendi is, in fact, the cutest. Her optimism is so endearing!)
I've got a headcanon that the Borg are actually descended from Pakleds that got bounced through the timestream a few times picking up weird stuff. Until 'We are strong! We want your ship pieces to add to our ship pieces!' become 'Resistance is futile. You will be assimilated.'
To be fair, Peanut Hamper pretty much arrives on the ship and immediately has a roomful of almost-strangers staring at her and being all "You're going to kill yourself for us, right?" I'd have checked out too.
@@ianburns1167 That's the most unhinged headcanon I've ever heard. I love it!
@@barkingmonkee She's a Starfleet officer. She literally signed up for it.
@@barkingmonkee Aside from the fact that she's a Starfleet Officer and signed up for this? They weren't asking her to die. They didn't for Rutherford, Shax died to save him. She had a built in transporter and would have been fine.
She's a disgrace to the uniform.
Peanut Hamper's actions were in line with the Exo-Comp introductory episode, since they proved their sentience initially by refusing a suicidal order.
They refused a definite suicide order, but proposed an extremely risky alternative that killed a third of them. Peanut Hamper refused an only moderately dangerous mission.
This episode has one of my favourite jokes/references in the entire series, when Riker references the Enterprise finale.
Shax calling Rutherford Baby Bear always pulls on my heartstrings. You're with the Prophets, Papa Bear.
"hey does that make you mad? bye!" hahahahaha yessssss 💖💖💖💖
I love it when Kat gives no fucks!
@@Helbore same! them and Paula are incredible and i wish i was still living in LA so we could be friends lol
LOWER DECKS!!! LOWER DECKS!!! LOWER DECKS!!!
Shax is my favorite of the bridge crew. He's just a big 'ol growly koala bear with an absolute heart of gold as big as a black mountain.
I'm so glad nothing bad ever happens to him.
The first canonical appearance of the Titan
6:53 The Solvang making a failed shift to warp is one of the most unsettling scenes I have seen in my (limited) viewing of Trek. The screech in particular, that is not a sound that a Federation ship should ever make.
Shax's death hit me pretty hard the first time through as well, but who they replace him with is pretty awesome too. 😀
Love the return of Riker and Troi. The brought the USS Titan in from the novels which was a fan made design. So sweet.
There are huge changes every season and each character develops pretty well over time.
"Jen" is almost always off screen on season 1 but comes in as a regular character in Season 2. She's an Andorian which I think is pretty cool. She was the Andorian that Mariner met when chasing through the Cerritos with the husk trying to save Boimler from his new girlfriend.
We need more Andorian focus, but we at least have Orions now.
If they had to try to write 26-ish episodes a season for Lower Decks, it might have burnt out by end of season five... But with so few episodes each season, #SAVELOWERDECKS!
The ups and downs in this episode are INSANE. It’s also criminal that there’s only 10 episodes a season.
i see what you did there.
I will spoil nothing, but next season answers all these questions. And Tendi has the best arc of any Trek character...maybe ever.
Even though it was spoiled for me, it was still such an amazing moment seeing the Titan arrive to THAT music, along with Captain Riker and Commander Troi! I literally cried happy tears.🥲👏
This show is so awesome in its ability to give you relevant Easter Eggs, various call backs to all the prior series, cameos, and still tell good stories. Landru from TOS. Literally calling the TOS Era the TOS Era and finding a clever reason to do so. Bringing in Riker, Troi, and the Titan. Turning the Pakleds into a legitamite threat.
Now, now, Kat. You shouldn't be judging T'ana and Shaxs' relationship. 😇 One loves who one loves. 😉
There was a series of novels about Riker being captain of the Titan. Shaxs was in one of the Star Trek comics around a year ago. He even got his own special issue called Day of Blood: Shaxs' Best Day, where he gets to fight a load of Klingons. (Day of Blood was a big story arc that had the two ongoing Trek comics crossover.)
As you'll see D'Vana Tendi is one of us...
Hope you guys watch Prodigy later.
Tennant is an awesome dude. Also, this episode is fantastic.
This show really has no right to be as good as it is!
I thought the "hand pie" looked like a Cornish pastie! I mean that is basically a pie you can hold in your hand, so...
The picture they used of Kirk and Spock in the opening was taking from Star Trek: The Animated Series, in case you're wondering about the different art style.
SHAXS!! The guy went out having just the greatest time of his life!
The “it’s the Titan!” moment always gets me! Seeing Riker then the TNG theme! OH! Just SO GOOD!
#SaveLowerDecks
Just seeing a ship destroyed with all hands lost, it chills my blood.
This series came out swinging and GODDAMN that opening was INTENSE. Also Mariner in 2nd contact "oh you could be a sword guy. It's been ages since we had a sword guy"
This series is fantastic, Strange New Worlds is also a great series.
The Titan!!!!!
Craziest goddamn season finale cameo ever! I love this episode!
You know... there's fan theories about Carol and young Mariner on the Enterprise D...
Bring on season 2 ❤
Well, you folks ask many of the right questions, that's for sure! 🤣👏
You'll love this series more and more as you go on.
LLAP 🖖
This show is so short, but it fits so much into that time. The entire run is about the length of one season of TNG, but it fits a series' worth of stories into it.
GOD I love this show.
Lower decks is a true Trek show. And like all treks it takes a little time to find its feet. But once it does? well its off to the races.
9:20 in Star Trek Online, we got an Exo Comp who helps you break into enemies computers called "Legume Creche".
Some seasons are better than others, but all of them are good. It never really dips in quality. If everyone on the team feels like they have another couple seasons in them, then by all means they should have done it, but if not, then they ended on a high note, and that's better than most get.
another amazing video ladies. I was worried about how hard Shax's death was gonna hit you both and it was so hard not avoid any spoiler in the comments while also hinting that this was a major episode. they really aimed for the feels and set phazers to stun on this one
Lower Decks has the best action scenes. They only get better and better!
I started crying even before the beginning of your reaction. Shaxs and the Titan incoming always get me bad.
16:03 "Hah ha!" Famous last words
Jonathan Franks (Riker) has been keeping his hand in on the current Star Trek shows directing well over a dozen episodes across nearly all of the shows. So his cameo here isn't that surprising when you think about it... but at the same time it was still surprising to see them bring in that significant of a cameo.
One of the best Star Trek season finales ever. Oh, and Crisis Point: The Rise of Vindicta is one of the best Star Trek movies ever.
They start (ish) this episode with the baddies effortlessly destroying another California class, likely as a way of quickly showing us how dangerous the villians are to the Cerritos.
They did the same thing in DS9 - such as when they had the baddies destroy the Galaxy class USS Odyssey, with the specific intention of making the statement that the Enterprise D would not have surivied either.
To be fair, ramming a ship directly into the warp core is going to destroy any ship :P That Jem'Hadar assault ship smashed right into the secondary hull in the right spot, and even if the warp core had not been directly struck, the deflector dish and starboard nacelle were hit and would have definitely caused an overload.
Have our Gals watched DS9 yet? ..or should you maybe prune that spoilage?
@@slaintejimmy They have said a number of times that they have no plans on watching it.
"Oh... the jazz....."
Yes indeed, when we were watching when it first aired we knew that Riker and Troi might be showing up, because they've been dropping the name USS Titan through the season, but when the actual USS Titan appeared it was a BIG DEAL for people.
The thing is the Titan itself was canon because Riker and Troi accept being transferred there in Star Trek Nemesis, but the ship itself didn't appear in the movie. The Luna Class design was chosen in a contest for a book series in 2007, fans submitted entries and the winning design was used in the covers and illustrations of that and subsequent book series.
Over the years the Luna Class design became a fan favorite, but of course it wasn't canon until this episode, it was very well received and was a complete surprise to everybody.
Peanut Hamper is two words each containg the same number of letters and syllables, each syllable containing an equal number of letters.
#SaveStarTrekLowerDecks
#SaveLowerDecks
I cant wait for you both to continue your journey with this show, it is absolutely excellent!
7:22 Remember the Exo-comps, Paula? They are considered sentient life.
I've said it before, but every ship in the fleet has a comedy, a drama and a tragedy you could tell about it. The Cerritos just has more Trouble With Tribbles than Cities on the Edge of Forevers.
23:00 KITTEH!!!!
Make it go! 🥴😰😵💫
Magic. 😊
Love this show. Pure Trek :)
This is like my favorite show and I'm glad I found you guys through it. Love your whole vibe keep it up!
Oh, right, #SaveLowerDecks
And there are 3 more seasons; still waiting on Season 5.
Hell, I know (and worked with) the actor who played Saru on Discovery (also Landry)
Oh, the Solvang (the other Cali-class); that was the crew that lost there ship to the space jellyfish a few episodes back... so that crew, all the kids Mariner was carrying to safety? Yeaaaah.
Boimler with the Rapier- you remember how Mariner (I think in the pilot) said "they were due for a sword guy, maybe it'll be you"...? There it is! This show is crazy with continuity and Easter Eggs... (that helmet is was a "Spock's Helmet" toy from the IRL 60s)
"We're talking about this later..." and the (change in) look on Riker's face- I crack up every time.
CBS just dropped the season 5 teaser, so it looks like we’re getting more Lower Decks
I love that this episode is basically the bones of the previous one, but played straight.
I would be more sad about Shax's death if he didn't look so happy fighting those badguys.
13:32 I used to think i was a pretty informed Trekkie but this was a reference too far for me. Billups is holding an Enco Toys Star Trek Space Fun Helmet from 1976. I had no idea that existed until this episode. Most of the cast and crew weren't even born when that was released!
Warp in the factor of 5-6-7-8
This episode officially made the Spock helmet canon. When Mariner was Pulling out all her secret contraband from their hiding places, you see the Spock helmet being held by the chief engineer. They sold this helmet in the 70s and 80s, the helmet just said Spock on it with a flashing red light..
Did you recognize Peanut Hamper as an exocomp from "Quality of Life"? (TNG S6E9). Because I didn't until later and I'm embarrassed.
Season just flew by. 😢 Really love the series and you girls have the best reactions.
Please react to Jim Henson’s Farscape
You remember Jen, don't you? The Andorian lady Beckett pushed out of the way earlier in the season?
To Kat and Paula: In case you weren't aware. (Not sure of how much Paula has watched and if she informed KAt. ) Riker and Troi being together and on theTitan here is a follow up to the end of the Movie, Star Trek : Nemesis. There is a novel series that follows their adventures on the Titan. This is the first time the Titan is seen on screen. Its design I believe was the product of a fan art campaign ahead of the novel series. Also, edited out of this reaaction is a reference to the much hated Series Finale of Star Trek Enterprise.
Mariner is in TNG, that is how she knows Riker and Enterprise missions. In the TNG episode When the Bough Breaks, there is a shot of a group of school kids. There is a young teenage black girl, with hair that looks identical to Mariner's. She was basically retconned to be Mariner. It also explains why Riker says he was Mariner's mentor when talking to Freeman.
It's how he would have wanted it. Well, maybe with Cardassians instead of Pakleds. But closer to his ideal than many get to theirs'.
Also, "We get to become best friends all over again!" I wish I was half as optimistic as Tendi.
Friendship! 🙋♂️
Boimler pulled a Rimmer...
Slight Spoiler for Star Trek Nemesis. Riker was promoted to Captain of the USS Titan at the end of that movie and Troi went with him. This is the first time seeing the Luna-class Titan in canon, it had appeared on book covers before that.
Yep! Kat and Paula, I’m not going to spoil anything that’s coming up, but just in case you’re wondering about this show’s place in the chronology, this first season takes place in 2380, the year after Nemesis (and the next three are all in 2381, in what’s evidently a very busy year for this one ship and crew).
In other words, all of TNG, DS9, Voyager, and the TNG movies are relatively recent history, having happened in the last 16 years or so before this show begins - so anything from those shows and movies (not to mention productions set earlier) could come up in this show…
Been waiting for this... bet they cry.
RIP to best damn security officer in Starfleet
Full throat screaming and ejecting a warp core
To find out what Riker and Troi are doing on the Titan, I recommend watching the last three TNG movies.
Yaaaay, conspiracy theorists survive into the 24th century...
IMO, Season 1 of Lower Decks is probably the worst one. And it's fantastic. It only gets better and better.
Ah Peanut Hamper, the actual worst. She's awful, I hate her, she's perfect. And Tendi was wonderful too, being so excited to see her succeed rather than jealous. And now we have the return of the Pakleds, the Titan coming to the rescue, everything. Shax's sacrifice though. And Boimler's weasel nature getting the better of him. Big feels, and it only gets more so. The reason Lower Decks works is that they take the characters seriously, even if they and the setting are also absurd.
Oh yes, there is someone named Jen on the ship. 👤
12:51: Bill Cypher com badge moment ⚠️
Just got announced; Tawny Newsome (Mariner) will co-showrun an (as yet untitled) live-action Trek comedy set in the 25th century. This will be...*counts fingers* series 12.
Another quality video devoid of small cat parts!
At least Shax went out happy. Too bad he never got to eject the warp core.
Do Exocomps have more rights than abdroids?
Carlos is the best? Well thanks!
