@@ondrejvasak1054 Your both right. It was a Flop in terms of quality but a massive success in terms of ratings. The quality of BtE is so bad that Dave skips the episodes on rerun and their streaming service doesn't even have it available. Personally I've literally only seen it three times and that's counting watching via this channel. I normally watch the rest of RD at least 3 times a year. But BtE was a massive ratings hit, something like 3.2 million, which on Dave is huge. The Red Dwarf Premier got something like 4.7 million on BB2 in 1988 and that was a huge success at the time for BBC2. Getting over three million on a minor digital channel 20 years later was amazing. What this showed Dave was that there was still a very large audience for Red Dwarf and commissioning a proper season with a proper budget would be profitable. Dave themselves had never wanted to do a Season 9/mini-series. They were actually just after a reunion show. Naylor convinced them he could make a 3 episode mini-series for the same price. The lack of budget obviously forced the story back to Earth, the old sets were long gone by this point so it pretty much had to be shot on location rather than in a studio in locations that actually existed, so in contemporary Earth and not in a redressed power station. So the budget pretty much dictated the plot and meant that the three episodes had to be a three part story. RD doesn't do multi-episode stories very well. Its awful, but its also understandable that the budget just wasn't there at the time to do it properly.
It's hard to believe this episode is over ten years old, I still consider it as one of the new episodes! Lister on the phone to that shopping channel was just brilliant!😄😄😄
Oh same here mate. I still regard this particular series (on top of S9) onwards as being among the new episodes, which truly is crazy considering how long ago it actually came out. Time really has just completely and utterly shot by it is both wonderful and absolutely heartbreaking. Thankfully though, it does show that the visual quality has totally held up. Visual quality for shows in Britain hasn’t really changed much since 2010 onwards, in all the right ways. It really shows how good things were back then. Sad that for some shows on the BBC and other channels however, the writing isn’t as good as it was back then. Visuals may have gotten a tiny bit better now for the budgets that are available, but the writing for most by equivalent hasn’t.
It’s like they finally realised that nothing needed changing or fixed and that what made Red Dwarf beloved was just it’s original formula of 4 silly lonely blokes marooned on a big ship!
Series 10 onwards has series 1-6 vibes, not quite hitting the same heights but definitely back on track. Some brilliant episodes coming in the next few series.
Doug Naylor had to fight to get the studio audience back, it wasn't in the budget and as a consequence there is only one location shot in the entire series, everything else (other than the models) was filmed in the studio. The set designers did an amazing job at redressing what is essentially three sets and a corridor to give the illusion not just of the entire ship but also various locations. Unfortunately, whilst it was all in the studio, not all of it was shot in front of the audience. The schedule for the series was incredibly tight, Craig was still signed on with Coronation street and had been given a sabbatical to film series 10; arranging this delayed Craig from even being able to sign up for S10 and as Dave wouldn't go head without him, Naylor didn't start writing the episodes until this was arranged. Naylor had general storylines that he had planned and some dialogue from the aborted Red Dwarf movie that he had spent a decade pitching, but he didn't have any complete episodes. To make matters worse for him, the lack of budget and time for location shooting meant that several proposed story lines had to be shelved. This meant a couple of the episodes were only partially wrote in time for the studio audience, and they were then completed in pick up week; it does show once you know; but not as much as other examples. Despite this S10 was the renaissance of Red Dwarf. Not quite the standard of the Golden age (S3-6) but up there and better than it had been for nearly two decades.
This has to be one of the best Red Dwarf openers and it's such a funny episode. I never really used to like series 10 but after a rewatch, it's one of the stronger seasons.
Me too. I didn't like it when I first saw it but watched it again years later and liked it. Series 11 and 12 are as good as red dwarf at its peak imho.
I do love how the Moose gag builds, with the three-part punchline of Lister dragging out his answer and milking it for all it's worth just to wind up Rimmer, then Kryten answering immediately without hesitation and with mild irritation, and Cat interrupting.
I saw this for the first time a day ago, because I walked after "back to earth" so Kryten with bags under his eyes was a surprise. But it's Red Dwarf, just go with it. It's like an old comic book when a new writer or artist takes over and changes things up.
The moose gag is one of my favourites of all time in Red Dwarf, along with the stirmaster. I think Series 10 starts strong, the last few eps IMO weren't as great but as usual here to see what you think because we all don't like the same things!.

"MythBusters" tested the effects of moose/vehicular impacts. They wanted to see if speeding up might help to flip the animal over the car. (To clarify, they built a "simulacrum"; no animals were harmed.) Due to its height and weight, speeding up just made the "moose" hit the windshield region even harder, effectively crushing the roof upon the driver ("Buster", their test dummy). Glad I live in the Deep South where there are no moose!
Because of this episode, moose memes have become just as popular as "What is it?" and toaster related postings in the Red Dwarf fan communities. I love Series X+ Has some of my favorite episodes of the whole franchise.
No, it was Fiji. You might be thinking of the song "I go the whole wide world" (just to find her) by Wreckless Eric. Will Ferrell sung and played it in 'Stranger than fiction'.

I liked the concept of Back to Earth, it being a squid follow up felt very Dwarfy. But this was a fantastic welcome back to the Dwarf, and I loved every episode that follows. The boys may age, but the humour they bring to me is timeless.
Noice, onto the new era! Episode 3 of this season is one of my favourite Red Dwarf eps as a whole :) I do dislike how they didn't bring back Kochanski though, and made Rimmer a hologram again (albeit hardlight). Feels like they were playing a little too safe, really trying to recapture the feel of "the old days". While I did think Season 8 wasted its potential by having the crew in the brig, I did love that they were experimenting by bringing the crew back to life, and it could've been a really cool way to expand the world-building. Either way though, they did do a great job with reviving the show, so can't complain too much.
How much of that is nostalgia for when you were young, though, do you think? I can’t possibly compare my enjoyment of the newer stuff to the 90s show because I haven’t watched them hundreds of times over a couple of decades and I’m not a teenager anymore. I think that, arguably, I would like these episodes JUST as much had they been made back then.
@@SketchyMagpie It's a good question... I had concerns when Doctor Who was revived - what if I don't like the revival... With Dwarf, I think it's a matter of - I still think of Dave as that young almost-aimless slob, who wakes up in deep space as the last human being. Seeing him now (ie Season Dave and onwards) just seems wrong because - he's an old man. I guess I'd like to think that he should have evolved more than he has - cos I'd like to think I've evolved from the person I once was... (Though, that's probably not very true...)
I agree that six episodes per season is the sweet spot. I like the next couple of seasons a lot. I respect that they were trying some new things the past few series, some of them worked and some didn't, but we get back to the basics of the earlier seasons here and it works really well.
In the original draft of the story the Trojan wasnt towed by Red Dwarf, it was in the Dwarf hold. There was a gag where Rimmer had to explain why he could only give Howard a tour of one side of the ship as it was the only side facing the stars.
I watched Back to Earth, back in the day and that was my last Red Dwarf episodes. I just watched Trojan a few weeks ago. Am just a few episodes ahead of you two. Also been watching you since the first Red Dwarf episode. I am currently watching your TNG reactions and a few TOS & Lower Decks episodes. Can't wait till Strange New Worlds reactions. Keep up the good work.
If you Gal's enjoy Chris Barrie's performance in Red Dwarf you should watch The Brittas Empire, he's so funny in that show 😅 Pity the final episode was shite though 😥
It was great to see Red Dwarf "classic" back again. They still have to think of some retcon that explains why a robot can gain 30-40 pounds of weight over 25 years.
Well… Kryten isn’t a robot, he’s a mechanoid… his brain is part organic. So maybe in addition to his recharge socket he needs to consume organic matter as well… and he’s learned a little too much from Lister about moderation…
@@paulwalsh2344 Hey Kryten! Yeah lookin' porky. Ah Yes Mister Lister Sir. You have noticed that in addition to the several software updates that we found onboard the derelict spacecraft, I have also installed the latest series 4000-X4b chest, back and buttocks upgrade. These optional modules provide a 25% increase in battery life, hydro-dynamic shock absorption and enhanced protection against micro-meteorite impacts.🤣
It's gonna be interesting to see how you two find the 'Dave' era of the show (incase you don't know 'Dave' is the name of a UK channel that is loosely associated with the BBC & primarily exists to show reruns of BBC comedy shows. Red Dwarf was their first attempt at making their own content, hence why BTE went SO meta and was asking for more episodes). People either love it or hate this era, I personally love it but admitly feels like it just missing something, not in a bad way though. Ohh regarding Krytons appearance I don't think they made him look older I think they just sadly didn't know how to do the makeup anymore. Wheather or not it was because of being out of practice, a different team or maybe just budget I don't know I just think that the Dave era of the show struggled to do Kryton's makeup properly. I think this series (for as much as I love it) is the worst he's ever looked and arguably even worse than series 2.
Nice that they’ve stepped away from starbug for some corridor and bunk room antics. The lower budget means they’re back to series 1 and 2, but I love it ❤
some really great episodes in this season... one of my all time favs in this season....it has way too much rimmer in it... way way WAY to much rimmer, but its funny as heck and has some great practical effects in one episode
7:59 something i know about this scene: apparently they tried loads of ways to make this scene work with chairs and such in the end they just got him to stand and bend his knees and pretend he was on a chair
The moose joke hit me and the wife so hard I actually got her one of those oversized teddy bears for valentines day. On the feet is stitched, "Baby, its a moose". Pretty sure whoever did the stitching probably thought we were insane.
Welcome to series 10, Gals!! Arguably, the best series since the 7th. After the slog of series 9, it is just great to have something that really feels like vintage Red Dwarf again. The pace, acting, joke delivery are all so much better. Sparky and entertaining reaction btw! Looking forward to your next one!
Okay, technically it's not the only reason - mostly it's because you two are adorable and you watch a lot of stuff I also like, but the moment I knew you were doing Red Dwarf I was like "it's only a matter of time". 🤣

great reaction to 1st ep of series 10 i had a feeling you would enjoy this one and glad you both enjoyed it :) for me they only get better I hope you enjoy as much :) thank you
Someone edited a "Redux" version of these later series. They mixed cut scene and different takes to give the most "authentic" classic RD feeling. I'd say it's well worth checking out, you probably wouldn't notice most edits first time round but there's a few takes of Kryten in particular that I think are better than the official episodes.
Lister and Rimmer seem a lot more friendly to each other in this season, and honestly I quite like that! I mean you spend enough time with someone that's bound to happen.
I want a scene where everytime it cuts to Rimmer hes wearing one of his different hologram colours ending with Rimmer being alive and the rest of the cast being holograms. Take that continuity!
There definitely was a live studio audience for this, because I was in it for the filming of this episode.

I liked the concept of Back to Earth, it being a squid follow up felt very Dwarfy. But this was a fantastic welcome back to the Dwarf, and I loved every episode that follows. The boys may age, but the humour they bring to me is timeless.
Noice, onto the new era! Episode 3 of this season is one of my favourite Red Dwarf eps as a whole :)
I do dislike how they didn't bring back Kochanski though, and made Rimmer a hologram again (albeit hardlight).
I still feel the best of Dwarf was in the early 90's... But seeing the two of you enjoying this episode - I'll put on my rose coloured glasses.
🎵🎶Gallifrey Gals, Gallifrey Gals Gallifrey... GALS! 😀🎶🎵
If you Gal's enjoy Chris Barrie's performance in Red Dwarf you should watch The Brittas Empire, he's so funny in that show 😅
Pity the final episode was shite though 😥
Red dwarf back to how it should be . Great video ladies, even better to come.
I like to imagine that he's doing it out of sympathy, i.e. to keep up with the others as they get older.
Yeah, it’s a great episode. Almost my favourite of the series!
My favourite is “Dear Dave” because it feels it could’ve been a Series I or II episode. Absolutely love it. What a great callback.
Now renamed U&Dave.
Kryten's make up is very variable at this juncture.
15:54 I was reminded of Samuel Jackson in Die Hard With A Vengeance.
Nice that they’ve stepped away from starbug for some corridor and bunk room antics. The lower budget means they’re back to series 1 and 2, but I love it ❤
Bunk room antics are my favourite part of Red Dwarf, that's why the first 2 series are my favourite XD
some really great episodes in this season... one of my all time favs in this season....it has way too much rimmer in it... way way WAY to much rimmer, but its funny as heck and has
some great practical effects in one episode
I have the entire season on DVD. And if you think that revelation of Rimmer's brother was a shocker, just wait until the final episode.
Its good to be back :-)
7:59 something i know about this scene:
apparently they tried loads of ways to make this scene work with chairs and such
in the end they just got him to stand and bend his knees and pretend he was on a chair
The moose joke hit me and the wife so hard I actually got her one of those oversized teddy bears for valentines day. On the feet is stitched, "Baby, its a moose".
Pretty sure whoever did the stitching probably thought we were insane.
You are gonna love this series
Welcome to series 10, Gals!!
Arguably, the best series since the 7th. After the slog of series 9, it is just great to have something that really feels like vintage Red Dwarf again. The pace, acting, joke delivery are all so much better. Sparky and entertaining reaction btw! Looking forward to your next one!
Season ten was a nice return to form. I'd parallel it with season 6. ❤
The moose running gag is the reason I've been following you guys, waiting to see how you react. I was not disappointed.
Okay, technically it's not the only reason - mostly it's because you two are adorable and you watch a lot of stuff I also like, but the moment I knew you were doing Red Dwarf I was like "it's only a matter of time". 🤣
Red Dwarf, back on form again. 👍
Awww kats so precious
Red Dwarf is back!!! Cool shirts
I'm so glad you survived to make it out the other side. Altogether 🎶 It's cold outside...
Had not seen back to earth since it was on new, I watched again for your videos to prep and I agree with Kat, 1 is just bad. This season is miles better
great reaction to 1st ep of series 10 i had a feeling you would enjoy this one and glad you both enjoyed it :) for me they only get better I hope you enjoy as much :) thank you
Someone edited a "Redux" version of these later series. They mixed cut scene and different takes to give the most "authentic" classic RD feeling. I'd say it's well worth checking out, you probably wouldn't notice most edits first time round but there's a few takes of Kryten in particular that I think are better than the official episodes.
I like how they took a joke that wasn't very funny and turned it into a rotfl joke. It was a moose.
This is the renaissance period it is thoroughly enjoyable. For the record I enjoyed Back To Earth as well
I've been teasing the Moose joke in the comments since S8. By your reactions, it's clear that it didn't disappoint.
Red Dwarf Figi.
Agents of SHIELD Tahiti.
Fuchal
Lister and Rimmer seem a lot more friendly to each other in this season, and honestly I quite like that! I mean you spend enough time with someone that's bound to happen.
Continuity is for losers! Who told you you needed continuity? Some loser who was trying to make you feel small.
I want a scene where everytime it cuts to Rimmer hes wearing one of his different hologram colours ending with Rimmer being alive and the rest of the cast being holograms. Take that continuity!
the next ep is my favourite of s10
Yes, we've finally seen the back of Back to Earth. The worst part of Red Dwarf.
Series x was a bit of a renaissance for the series imo
I know a lot of people didn’t bother with new RD after BtE. I wonder if anyone watching these reactions are seeing it for the first time?!
Beware of Greeks bearing another quality Trojan cat video!
IIRC Kryten looks different because it's an easier to apply mask and suit so Robert doesn't have to endure hours in makeup any more.
