  • Is this scenario, I did an alternate scenario based on the concept of "Operation Unthinkable"
This Operation was a real idea that passed through Winston Churchill's head, consisting a plan to invade the Soviet Union right after the end of WW2 in Europe.
I did 2 scenarios, both of them consisted in western allies destroying the soviet units as fast as possible, and using nukes as well.
In the first scenario, soviets resisted the first attack and western allies failed to destroy the advanced soviet units.
On the second one, western allies successfully destroyed part os the soviet frontline and decimated the country in a span of 2~ years.

The plan actually wanted to use the remnants of the Wehrmacht to bolster his forces. But at this point 90% of the Wehrmacht's experienced troops had been killed, captured, or put out of action, so I doubt the Allies would benefit much.

Don't forget that Slavic nations and some allied countries probably wouldn't fight along remnants of people who murdered their families and Soviet Union would win in eyes of the world because while Soviet Union wanted to wipe out N@zi murderers allies allied with them so they actually became allies of people who had blood of countless people on their hands. Don't forget that after nuking major Soviet cities like Kiev and Minsk it would result in countless deaths of civilians so US and the west would definetely be seen as the new Nazis or someone comparable to them because of them killing innocent Civilians.
So yeah I think that right after the start of operation Unthinkable Soviet Union would win definetely.

What makes no sense about this plan is that if the western Allies really wanted to take down the Soviet Union, they could’ve called Hitler in 1938 and said “hey let’s invade the Soviets and defeat communism once and for all!” before Stalin had a chance to really mobilize his forces and raise the USSR to its military strength.

Definitely a Soviet victory if nukes were not used. Largest land army, a huge air force, battle hardened soldiers. American and British troops would be confused why they are fighting against their former ally so there could be revolts and strife in the allied armies, meanwhile the Soviets see it as an act of betrayal and would be more motivated.

Logistics win the wars and the allies win that part by a long shot. All of the allied countries population were larger than the soviets which meant in dire situations they could draft even more troops that the soviets had. But it is difficult to say for sure who would win. But nukes wouldn't be taken out of the scenario. Allies would nuke the soviet armies and logistics routes giving the allies a near guarenteed win.

True. The Soviets would see the invasion as a betrayal and fight to the death for their country, like what happened in WW2. The western allied soldiers would know it was a offensive war and be unmotivated to fight. Throughout the whole WW2 allied soldiers were constantly met with pro-soviet propaganda. They would definetly not be motivated to fight and the Russians would be. Also the Sovietd were more powerful.

2 is more probable than 1. Western Allies would have had total dominance in the air, which in on itself is quite a defining factor. Advancing Soviet armies would've been bombed to ash, their supply lines reduced to rubble. Their troops were also much, much better equipped, and the equipment itself was also superior (to their Soviet counterparts) Western tanks, planes, basically everything they had was better. Soviets also had many Western made equipment in their arsenal at the time, though those would run out of spare parts and maintenance would've haunted them. With Lend&Lease gone, Soviets would have had a much harder time keeping their armies effective.
Stalin did NOT accumulate 15 million soldiers on the borders of the Eastern Bloc, he did not have that many. Some of their troops were also stationed on the Pacific Front at the time, due to the Japanese. Although the same also goes for the Western Allies, their logistics capabilities was way superior to the Soviets so they could much more easily bring those soldiers back to Europe.

    few corrections i'd make;
    - Operation unthinkable was to be executed when the second world war was still undone, so all the allied powers that took part in it wouldve still participated (saying this because I saw countries like Belgium, Luxembourg, Greece and Denmark being neutral)
    - the two Germanies shouldve been shown as occupation zones, the German governments hadnt been installed yet, same goes for Iraq and Iran, which were still under british and (for the case of Iran only) soviet military occupations. Not sure about that but even Italy could have been shown as an occupied territory, but I guess they had a government that was fighting for the allies so ill give it a pass (even tho italy started off as neutral fsr)
    - greece was already undergoing its civil war, basically it could have been part of this wider west versus east war scenario
    - spain in no way wouldve joined the western allies, most realistically they wouldve stayed neutral, same for portugal (though unlike spain, i can understand a portugal entry)
    - countries like bulgaria and hungary were still under soviet occupation at the time, their governments had surrendered
    - really not sure how the ussr won - or even survived for that matter- after having three nuclear bombs dropped at its largest cities, perhaps that should have been avoided in this althist

The Soviet Army was also completely reliant on material aid from the US, particularly for logistics. The idea of the invincible Soviet Army is pretty much the new invincible German Army myth, the Soviets would’ve collapsed in 1941 had the Western Allies not begun the Lend Lease and indeed the Soviet Union was only properly capable of pushing the Germans out of its country when the Western Allies had already landed in France.

Their front line troops were decimated. Zhukov had said to Stalin that they had run out of reserves by the time and had to take Berlin with what they had. This even seems to be in the case in non bias sources. The WW2 mapping video with army sizes video on RUclips showcases the push to Berlin shrunk the Soviet army down from 6.7 Million men, to 5.7 Million. Part of the reason was because of logistical problems, overstretched supply lines, etc.
Now imagine stretching that line from Berlin to the Rhine, with no reserves. That would’ve shrunk the Red Army down more than a million in two months time considering they aren’t fighting someone fighting three different fronts, no air force, etc.
They would’ve advanced with human waves, stopped at the very best at the borders of France. Then got counter attacked and collapse.

Any attack against the Allies would not only have required the combined force of everything the Soviets could muster (requiring more supply) but the superior Allied air forces (the single strongest force at the time, no contest) would've reduced all their supply lines to rubble.
Meanwhile the US was fighting on 2 fronts each on an entirely different continent from both each other and the mainland US, separated by 2 different oceans. Yet they managed it no problem, they even managed to supply the Soviet, British and Chinese armies on top of their own.

In the western victory scenario there are a few errors, Ukraine wouldnt have Crimea, it only gained it in the 50s.
The polish border would probably be reverted back to the one we had in 1939, because East Prussia only became Polish due to Soviet forced migrations of Germans
Ukraine would probably not have Transcarpathia either, or western odessa, which was Romanian back then.

One major aspect of this that can't be overlooked is organized labor among the Western Allies. Continuing the war against a country they had been told were allies for years, especially when the continent had already been ravaged since 1939, would have been a hard sell to the voters at home. And considering the Communist presence in Western labor movements at the time, these governments likely would have been met with outright hostility at home.
Materiel problems would be likely for the Western Allies, and the Soviet Bloc would be able to wreak havoc with spies and infiltrators. Massive strikes and protests would be a certainty. Acts of sabotage and terrorism would be likely. We can't even necessarily rule out a country like France flipping to a revolt. As a result of this, many of the Allies would probably end up taking draconian measures on the home front, severely suppressing freedom of speech and association.
The result of Unthinkable would have been ruin, chaos, and mass death. We should count our entire SPECIES lucky it didn't happen.

3th Alternative scenario would have been, that the war would have ended in a stalemate, for example, the frontline would have been, that the part once beeing part of the German Empire(2th Reich), to the eastern front of today Czech Republic, Hungary and Croatia. Both Sides would have made a peace treaty (name example: Treaty of Zagreb) and we would have just like in our timeline a cold war between the USA and the Soviet Union(USSR). The frontline in the Caucasus region didn't really change so it will remain just like before the war. Maybe NATO and the Warsaw Pact would exist in this scenario in a bit of a different form. Also there could have been war, with the Republic of China, Japan and the occupied South Korean territory and they would have also made a fight against Communist China and against the Soviet union, which would also have had ended in a stalemate, by Manchuria and Communist China beeing captured and defeated and the frontline just a few kilometers before Vladivostok.

The agreement of splitting up europe wasnt even made by then. It was simply May 8th 1945 borders with the remaining german territory being divided into 2. The red army was, in my opinion, the strongest in 1945. At least land-wise. The USA, though, had a stronger air force and navy. Though a navy wouldn’t really matter as the USSR’s coastline is 99% frozen. They wiped out japan, conquering all of manchuria within two weeks and pushed down Korea, taking down almost a million japanese. Had this happened, im pretty sure the soviets would have some sort of victory as a stalemate even if they didnt get anything since they were the one defending. I mean, the west was already fighting the Japanese. And, the soviet union would not attack japan had the west attacked. The west would be fighting with two powerful countries. Also, many western soldiers were friends with the soviets so i think they will not fight the soviets or have low morale, as they would protest about having a third world war. They were already sick and tired of WW2. They would have been so relieved that the germans surrendered and the japanese were going to be defeated soon, but, when they hear that THEIR LEADERS ATTACKED the soviet union, they would be filled with rage, considering THEY were the aggressors. Many people in the UK and America, who had a good image of the USSR after the USA and USSR were great allies, would also be outraged and protest.
Ultimately, i see this war ending in a stalemate with the soviet union securing eastern europe, and the west still being in france, after suing for peace. But, im pretty sure the soviet union will never help the west by attacking japan in this timeline, so they would maybe have to actually land in japanese mainland.

I highly doubt an allied victory would be doable, German infrastructure was so fucked up by the time that a offensive like that would be a meat grinder for the allies, France was very weak and i dont think the public would accept an even deadlier war months after the end of ww2. The USSR also had a quite sizeable weapon stockpile and airforce. The nukes are outright impossible since planes would need to cross thousands of kilometers deep into enemy airspace without being intercepted by a larger airforce. Realistically the allies would lose europe, Britain would be in a similar position as they were in ww2, the Soviets couldnt invade the US or the UK, any "D-day" invasions would be obliterated. The territorial losses and further casualties + destruction would cause massive unrest and mutiny on the allied armies.

Nah. The West could easily stop Soviet advances.
You mention the infrastructure acting against the Allies, but not against the Soviets? Why? Especially given the Soviets were way more dependent on railways (as opposed to the Western Allies who were more motorised)
Soviet Air Force (VVS) was no contestant to the combined USAAF and RAF power. In 1945 the US was producing aircraft at a rate of nearly 100 thousand per year, mind you the Soviets only produced less than 150 thousand during the whole war. Western planes were also better. For example P-47 were much better CAS aircraft than the Il-2, the primary Soviet CAS aircraft.
Nukes can be more effectively used on Soviet army formations and supply hubs, to devastating effect still.
