Because they require being still and focusing on what is happening as you do with a stage play. Also, a lot of people claim they can't "relate" to the characters of period films like these because compared to contemporary standards, the people do not seem "real." What they do not understand is that the dialogue and ethics of those times were different, allowing for certain social issues that have been overcome. There was a certain type of acceptable conduct that was understood and in some ways would not be acceptable today. At the same time, there were other forms of behavior and social conduct that we have lost over the decades. But the basic point is that these movies are dealing with the human condition, which has been the same since time began.

What a gem from 1952 which I had never heard of or seen before. Broderick Crawford is superb as the newspaper editor and the supporting cast is very good. It shows how with good writing and acting a film can be full of drama and suspense even when we know who "did it" from early on in the piece. Donna Reed and John Derek are very good too. I loved the line up of drunks and there are good New York street scenes. It saddens me to think that most people watch today's Hollywood output with its CGI and massive budgets and know nothing about these excellent films from 70 odd years ago. I give this one 9 out of 10, thanks so much for uploading it here.

Magnificent ! This is a masterpiece. I say this a lot about these old films, but it's a fact that the writing back then was so much better than the trash you see mostly in the movies now. Crawford was one hell of an actor. I only knew him from my childhood as Matthews of the Highway Patrol, but the few times I've seen him since taught me what a great actor he was . And Donna Reed was a beautiful lady who added quality to every movie she was in .
I'm glad I watched this ; it enriched my life even more .

The plot keeps you watching, the character bits keep you involved. i love it when the charater actors get decent screen time, the scene in the bar with all those drunks and the dialogue there just can't beat by today's Hollywood. I have a personal anecdote about face-to-face recognition.
Several decades ago, I was driving taxi and was stopped at a red light. There was no other vehicles or pedestrians around as it was late on Sunday night and I was on my way home. I sat quietly, just waiting for the light to chanfge when I heard a sound and just had enough time to look up to see the head lights of a pick up truck bearing down on me. The next moment , I was getting out of the back seat as the truck had struck my car hard enough to submarine me into the back seat. I called the police and when they arrived, they arrested the driver of the truck for being intoxicated.
Cut to about 9 months later and I was working and arrived at a call at a club for a specific person. She came out and stumbled into the car. When she gave me her address, I recognized it right away and said nothing. we began our journey and she began to tell me about how badly her life had been the past while, with the police charging her with drunk driving after a cab driver hasd turned her in. She looked me full in the face and tols me she would never forget his face. I somehow managed to not laugh at her or tell her how my whiplash was aching at that moent. I don't recall if I goyt a tip or not but I did get this story.

I had assumed this was a remake of the 1931 film of the same name, which starred George Bancroft and Kay Francis. But this one was quite different - and both are excellent. What a great cast here - two Oscar-winners, plus dependable character actors O'Neill, DeCamp, Hale, and Morgan, and John Derek in the best performance I've ever seen from him. Terrific show!

I always enjoy Broderick Crawford (his work always had an certain, unique, edge) and Donna Reed (she's always fun and flirty). So, this flick is somewhat of a departure for both of them (Crawford the bad guy and Reed the hard journalist). [Never really cared for Derek, even as Joshua along-side Heston.] Very Noir, unpredictable, and riveting. Thanks for posting!
