A woman uses a deck of cards to predict death within 24 hours for a stranger sitting at a bar, then tries to help him remember who he is based on items in his pockets.
Richard Dix was wonderfully menacing in this one! When he smiles, he reminds me of Dennis Morgan. Enjoyable little thriller. Thank you very much for uploading.
Enjoyable movie. Wow, the behavior and trust of these people is certainly different from today! Getting into a stranger’s car on a street to “rest”, bringing a stranger home, the train man borrowing an unknown person his car. Not sure how the sister and Charlie put it all together but it was entertaining. Thanks for uploading this.
Biggest difference to me was a little girl outside alone who talks to a strange man and accepts money for ice cream. Returns to find her kitten dead. 😳😲
We did not let slip away,..It was bound to change,....I also miss that world the forties, fifties and sixties , life was different it was great, we had our problems and solved them differently. Today there is anger, rage, distruss no family values and it will get worse as time goes on,...I won't be here....but I'm sorry for the new generation coming up ,...my memories and good times growing up will always be with me. Don't mean to spoil your day...........Anna Belle.
Nostalgia is a good thing for a while but we can't live in the past. With these old movies we can pretend that we're part of it for a time. It's not real life, just escapism. Change must occur or we might as well give up. Some things are better.
John Galvin, in today’s cities will anyone stop to help you if you almost get run over in the street? Can you, if reasonably needed, just get in a car for a rest or refuge, an unlocked car on a city street? Maybe so, I don’t know, haven’t been to New York in a while, other cities around the world treat people better than in many in the U.S. New Yorkers do seem to do a lot of good things for each other that they don’t even notice themselves doing, remember how they helped each other during the September event. And New Orleans after Katrina would have been much better without Federal troops and interference with people helping each other, organizing to distribute food and water and such, and in some areas making the electric utility put the electricity back on. We are given the impression nowadays that everyone is stumbling around with attention on their smart phones, my Dad called them idiot phones, texting if communicating at all and not even talking anymore, so I wonder. Do we realize we’re in this world together?
I suppose this too trusting behavior was why in the mid-1950s our mother was always warning us not to take candy from, talk to or get in cars with strangers.
I think all of the Whistler movies are on RUclips (thank you) One thing is obvious, and that is that these are not low-budget efforts. Dix and the co-stars are outstanding actors. Even film score composers were famous in their day, like the Spanish composer Mario Casternuovo-Tedesco. I remember him from my days on radio when I had a classical music show every day. Even John Calvert, who played "Eddie Donnelly" in the Mark of the Whistler, had a career as a famous magician in his day. His debonair charm in that Whistler film is remarkable. Of course. Janis Carter needs no hyping up.
I sure wish a great many more of these Whistler films and TV productions were made. They were very fine. IMO they were every bit as good as the radio episodes, which have been hailed as one of the best and most popular radio dramas of its day.
One of the great shows from the Golden Age of Radio..............starring many of the great Actors from Hollywood at the time extending into its' own television show.
Casting made the perfect decision for actor Richard Dix in the role of William Everest. The entire cast is excellent. The story was great, well-written and completely cohesive. I was on the edge of my seat a few times, and especially when the two motorcycle police officers stopped the car. I had no idea where the story was going from that point. Thrilling!
I love these Whistler movies. But, why on earth does she wait until the cops drive away before she starts asking the suspicious guy questions? She's begging to be a victim at that point, but that seemed to be the common formula of female victimology in old movies.
Janis Carter was simply breathtaking. See her with Glenn Ford in 'Framed' (1947) & 'Woman on Pier 13' Robert Ryan/Laraine Day (1949) One question: why would a doctor write a prescription for 'Poison' ?
The way he stole the jacket with the Dr's ID think he took the RX and wrote whatever he found he needed from the book. Many meds are poison like Botox for example. A large dose of any chemical could be potent and lethal. Couldn't tell you exactly what but in the old days they also used arsnic?
John Galvin, no when we think of meds it's always in a positive way. Now with all the side effects they list on the warnings it could also be used to kill someone :) Not that it would cross my mind... only in the movies lol.
Man that lady's Stupid...going all over country with a guy she barely knows and then not telling her sister about it.. at least inform her...well it's just a movie..but it is still frustrating when characters are made so fickle minded...lol....nice movie though
42:48 "I didn't mean to scare you"? Well what in the world did he think her reaction would be when she walked into her dark apartment and someone grabs her in the dark?
This film was very good. Too bad the lady that did his cards didn't tell anyone who this guy was. It would have helped Jean and her sister. Good story.
if the whistler keeps wandering about late night surely he will bump into the saint? also upset his mother seen in the famous painting did not appear!lol!
Thank you very much for this movie……… i am looking for « my forbidden past » with Janis Carter, Ava Gardner. Robert Mitchum…… thank for upload if by chance, you get it…………👍
OK a man looses his memory & a woman offers 2 help, but she doesn't take him 2 the hospital or police, but takes him home 2 her sister & everyone goes 2 SLEEP. Geez. I'd like 2 know what year this movie came out. Sounds like a horror movie.
Nostalgia killed the rat!!! It’s true, today people watch a lot more junk than in the old days. On top of the fresh garbage, they watch the old trash!!!
Saw another movie with the whistler by chance last week. Didn't know there was more than one. See a stranger in a cafe, flip a few cards and chase him outside? He acts like a nut and you invite him to spend the night? Hope no misinformed do gooder tries that today. Unless you want to be on the news.
Lioness Princess Bear, not really, actually quite the opposite, especially compared to today when the idea of women’s intuition might be labeled, unfairly, as “sexist”.

Excellent professional actors. The actors back then were true professionals that learned all the nuances of their lines perfectly!
They brought character and substance and knew their lines, not a few lines, as they now do, but their lines
And in some movies they had to be able to sing and dance as well as act especially later on in the 1950s
