  • Learn how to make this DIY kimono cardigan without a pattern in this easy step by step sewing project for beginners! Use it as a great layering piece or wear it as a DIY swimsuit cover up over your bathing suit. This kimono is one of my favorite sewing projects for beginners who want to learn how to make clothes easy because it’s a loose fitting jacket and the process of cutting and stitching is very simple!

    MATERIALS NEEDED:
    -1 ½-2 ½ yards of non stretch fabric (I used 1.5 yards and my fabric was 58” wide. If yours is much narrower or if you want a longer kimono or long sleeves, get 2 or 2 ½ yards.)

    -2 or more yards of a double fold bias tape
    -Loose fitting t-shirt to use as a template
    -Basic sewing supplies - sewing machine, needle, thread, pins, measuring tape, scissors, etc.

    WHAT YOU'LL LEARN:
    I’ll show you all the steps of cutting and stitching a kimono cardigan including: how to use a t-shirt to cut out the bodice pieces; how to make a kimono sleeve pattern using a t-shirt as a guide; how to sew the pieces together; how to use bias tape to finish the neckline and opening; how to hem sleeves; and how to add fringe trim to a kimono.
    *****
    STYLING:
    These look great over a dress, tights, and boots during the fall, or a dress and sandals or jeans and a solid tee/tank during spring. They also make the perfect kimono swimsuit coverup for summer! They’re perfect for all sizes - the loose fit is great on thin or plus size frames for the perfect outerwear accessory!

    I really love your tutorial. This is a great method using a T-shirt to make a customized pattern rather than having to get a commercial pattern. I just bought fabric this morning and am excited to get started. Thanks.

    I have been sewing for over 50 years and this is the easiest video I have ever seen....no kidding, AND, in all those years I can tell you....Knits are not my friend! I just made a knit pull over shirt...it looks like a wet dishrag that someone threw at me. P.s. I am a horder shopper of retro sewing patterns...not because I like sewing them, but when I get them (from Etsy) I look at the front picture of the pattern how the artist draws the women wearing the outfit, her hair and accessories...it is like collecting baseball cards I guess??? My patterns have a room of their own and want for nothing! Anywho, your video was just wonderful❤️

    • @ComicatCreations
      @ComicatCreations  5 лет назад

      Aww, that is so sweet of you to say, thank you very much!!! :) Hahaha I hope you can make better friends with knits ;) Some of them can be so tricky but I sure do love knit projects with the right fabrics! Ohh how cool that you collect retro patterns! I totally know what you mean - I love looking at the art and the styles and inspiration on fashion drawings and patterns so that's such a great idea to collect them! And it sounds like they have a loving home :D I bet it's so fun to sort through them and get inspiration from the styles! Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment!!!

    Hi! Very useful. What machine would you suggest for me to get as a beginner?

    • @itsallgood4743
      @itsallgood4743 4 года назад

      Hi! I would recommend almost any brother machine. Singer machines are good as well, but are harder to find one thats beginner friendly because there so many to choice from. Hope this helps :)

    • @ComicatCreations
      @ComicatCreations  4 года назад

      Thanks! I've used a Singer Talent 3321 for several years and I think it's pretty beginner friendly so it's one I'd definitely recommend! It has a decent variety of stitches, not so many that they're overwhelming, but enough that as you learn and experiment you can try new things. And if you decide not to go with that specific machine, I'd recommend looking for a machine that you can adjust the stitch length and stitch width on (I've seen a few super basic machines where you can't do that), and that has some basic stitches (like straight stitch and zigzag stitch) but also a few stretch stitches and decorative stitches. This will allow you to keep experimenting when you're ready to move on from just the straight stitch and zigzag stitch without having to upgrade a machine again. I've had great luck with Singer so far but I've also heard a lot of people who have enjoyed their Brother machines. I hope that helps! Good luck with your purchase and I'd love to hear what you decide!

      @ComicatCreations  5 лет назад +1

      Hmm I’ve checked and it’s playing right for me and for a family member I asked to check on their computer... I googled to see why a video wouldn’t play right and got a lot of suggestions to clear the cookies and history and whatnot as sometimes this can cause a video to stop, so I wonder if that would help? I’ll continue to try and figure out what is going on when I have more time to look into it and see if there’s any more suggestions I can figure out! I’m so sorry for the inconvenience!!! Otherwise I may wind up making another version of this video. I’ll let you know if I can figure anything out!
