I often use an outfit made of the Valdez vest, tiltham hat, black shirt, bandito pants, plain black boots, leather gloves and a black bandana (never used). But I’m really stuck between using one made that looks like Russell Crowe as Ben Wade in 3:10 to Yuma out of the black marshal coat, blue shirt, paisley vest, bandito pants, plain black boots, leather gloves, and tiltham hat or one that’s basically the same but instead uses a black shirt, red bandana, and a black leather vest (can’t remember the name) Though what irks me the most is the ones that get gold and black metals and varnish with some bright inlay color engraving. Something about a gold double barrel I can’t stand
I will hand it to you. You have gotten it completely accurate. My family has been involved with cattle for about 170 years, be it cowboys on drives or ranchers. And you got the look of the northern cowboys spot on in your video. I still dress that way for working on my Families Colorado/Wyoming ranch. So props to you on doing your research and getting honest, accurate information.
I’d love that but I feel like the map is too small at times and tbh because it’s sadly 1899 that’s kinda when stuff like that was less common due to invention of barbed wire.
Yeah, in my research for the video I came across some primary source documents talking about how the first settlers in Texas had so many wild cattle wandering around that they built their herds by bringing them in. I'd personally love to see this added to the game. For instance, locating 2 or 3 of them outside Tumbleweed and driving them up to my ranch near Emerald Station. Same with wild horses. Break em and bring em in. Of course the option to buy would be good too, but a combination of the two would be best, imo.

It really depends on a lot of factors, like what area and what year of the war you’re trying to replicate. For an early war confederate cavalry uniform, I use a yellow union cap (colored kepis were used early in the war to signify what kind of soldier you were- light blue for infantry, red for artillery, and yellow for cavalry), an unbuttoned white or light grey collared over shirt/ everyday over shirt or red/ dirty white union suit, light blue clerk pants, black preacher’s pride or cavalry boots, an agency gun belt, and a grey or tan military jacket. For late war you’d probably keep the shirt options the same, maybe a plaid unbuttoned collared over shirt. Keep the gun belt and boots the same. Change the pants to either brown or the dirty tan clerk pants, make the military jacket tan, and use either a brown, yellow, or grey union cap. For a hat you could also use a brown or light tan military scout hat. Unfortunately there aren’t a lot of accurate-looking flat-brimmed hats you can buy. If they made the brim on the military scout hat a little wider, it would be perfect.

I use my Haraway Hat, a dirty grey checkered shirt, dirty and dusty pants, red gerden spurs, a poncho with two wolf figures on the back, my brown worn ropers and of course, my brown horseman belt.
Upon more research this is actually a contested issue. Bass Reeves, the black deputy US Marshall is the guy you are referring to here. But John Hughes, a Texas Ranger, may also have been the inspiration. There are a lot of similarities in the successful careers of both men, but the author of 'The Lone Star Ranger,' the book the series is based on, dedicated his work to Hughes. The jury is still out.
4:05 Whoa! That has to be either one well-off bar keep(?) on the right there or someone that really liked his firearms. One of the few times I've seen a C96 from the time period. They had to have been pretty rare.
Hey, Man vs. History, I love the content! The Old West is my favorite time period, and my cousins and I grew up on ranches wanting to be cowhands and ranchers when we got older. RDR2 is currently my favorite game, and your content allows me to enjoy it even more. I do have a question for you, though. What would be a historically accurate coat for a cowboy character? I tend to have outfits for the hot, cold, and mild, so I’d appreciate a coat recommendation for the cold and mild outfits. Thanks.
Thanks buddy! I'm actually planning on making a video about this soon. Don't want to spoil it on here in the comments. If you don't want to wait, shoot me an email thebearderby@gmail.com and I'll give you some ideas.
I feel like this would also be a cool role. It would be similar to the long distance trader missions, but you herd cattle. This is already a feature in story mode so it wouldn't be that hard. I think it would be much more team oriented, and you have to do it with a posse. You could have rustlers come and try to steal some cattle, and you have to defend them, but if the some of the cattle get stolen or shot, you lose money like in the moonshiner role.
If you're looking for a real historical account of what life was like in the West read 'A Vaquero of the Brush Country' by John Duncan Young. He covers everything thing from the work, what they wore, what they ate, what they rode and what firearms they used. Young was a real life cowboy and he documented it all.
Please do more of these “how to create” episodes. They are awesome! Could you also include the type of horses, equipment and weapons they used? That would be even better.
I’ve heard that smaller horses like the Morgan and Tennessee walker are the most accurate because it’s easier to hop on their back versus a Shire or Hungarian
not really. it encompasses pretty much all American regions into one map. The far north is supposed to be the Colorado Rockies and the far South (Saint Denise) is supposed to be New Orleans, Louisiana. The west most parts of the map look to be representative of Montana.
Lmao, not really, most of the map is Rocky Mountains and Mid-Western plains. Ambarino, West Elizabeth and Western New Hanover are definitely not the south, and they are most of the map.
The corsets you can wear without anything under or over them are probably some of the worst offenders in terms of both tackiness and historical inaccuracy

So hope on day you get a big consultancy contract from RS. You make mine (and lots of others) gameplay even more fun and interesting.
Awesome comment, Bill. I hope so too. Hear that, R*? Send me that contract!
Another good video, you really need more subscribers because I assume you put a lot of work into these videos. Always well edited and you learn something new.
Thanks, Robbie.
this is possibly my favourite channel on youtube, i personally find the american frontier extremely interesting. thank you for making these videos!
Thanks, buddy!
Imagine if they made a rancher role where you could upgrade your farm and sell livestock
Your videos are ace man, you are making red dead online feel like a cowboy game. Thanks for that. Ps would love to see a historically accurate us solder.
Thanks, Ginga. Yeah, lots of requests for that. I'm putting it on the list of potentials.
Brilliant can’t wait to see it. Keep up the good vids man
Want do you want to be when your older?

"hello are you *SPANISH* ?!?"
For cowboy when my PlayStation plus was there I had
The stalker hat (black)
White over shirt
Black bandana or neckerchief
Black opulent vest or lancer vest
the black bandito pants
And black stovepipe square toes.
Hey I don’t know if you still read comments but they came out with some limited time wool chaps called the Shaffer Chaps. They look a lot more baggy like you see in the old photos, but even so are these historically accurate or do they fall under the same catagory as the Batwing chaps?
I always see other players walking around in a full suit of gold and I always wondered why you could let yourself go like that. It’s so sad.
I honestly hate when people try dressing like that and Rockstar keeps adding items like that.
@@alexzanderrodriguez4103 The clothing items are getting more and more prestigious which I honestly despise.
it looks cool lol idc about realism
Because its not a realistic roleplay game unfortunatley lol
@@ScammerTrolling it’s a game set in the Wild West and I just think it makes more sense and looks better to have more period correct clothes. On occasion I try the bounty hunter outfits but in the world they made it just doesn’t make sense. All the npc’s have more period correct clothes but when someone rides into a town with elaborate outfits with gold skulls all over it just doesn’t look good.
This is gonna help a lot with one of the character's I'm writing. Especially the details on a southern cowboy.
“If you ever watch it, I definitely recommend you check it out” - Man vs. History
At first I thought, 'Ha! Wait, did I? I might have.' But I actually say 'If you haven't watched it, I definitely recommend you check it out.' The southern Iowa twang trips folks up a bit. If you re-watch it I think you'll hear it.
Channels well put together loads of info in a easy to follow format. Not boring at at all. You don’t have a weird voice. Lots of photos and examples. Jam up. Good job.
Ha! The not having a weird voice got me. I've got a weird subtle twang though (half southern/ half Minnesotan)- I can admit that. Thanks for the compliments, Coleman. I appreciate it.
Every online character: I WANT A BLACK ARABIAN PURPLE ON PINK SILK AND DIAMON PIMP HAT WITH 30 POUNDS OF METAL ON MY BOOTS AND JACKET AND GIVE ME A BAZOOKA JUST CUZ
This is a cooooool channel man, I subbed before the video was 3 minutes in. This fills the hole in my heart left by canceling cable and loosing Discovery Channel and History Channel.
Ha! Awesome, man! Glad you're enjoying the vids!
I’ve always been disappointed with the vest selection and I’ve always thought they never looked too accurate.
I'm with you, Alex. They're far too flashy, embellished, etc. They also make far too many out of leather. They could really use some nice basic ones that look historically accurate.
Suggestions *sometimes* help, but the design team behind the vests & clothing in general are really catering to the GTA players who want to look like pimps.
they really gotta add a open/closed option for vests and jackets, i think it'd make them pop better
@@krisskringle920 literally in every movie or western show they always have vest open
@@krisskringle920 YES. Idk if you've seen Bonnie's outfit during her stranger mission- but she has an open vest and it's so pretty. I've requested her outfit for months, but ofc I'm just one person.
I'm so glad youtube suggested this. I'm not bothered about creating an accurate cowboy since I'm a fan of classic western movies and I love the inaccurate styles but this has been really informative
holy shit, the opening scene looked like it was from real life
Taming a horse was the first thing I did in online I tried to sell it and r* was like best I can do is 0.00
Hey Man vs. History is there anyway that I could send you a picture of my red dead outfit I want to know if it is realistic or not
Yeah, send it to me on Twitter.
I found your channel a couple of days ago and I absolutely love your content.
Thanks Kelly, welcome aboard!
I always make my outfits time era appropriate. I always laugh when I see players throw together the weirdest and most random pieces of clothing together and they don’t even try to make their character look like they’re in the correct time frame. I make my character blend in with the NPC’s and it makes the immersion so much more fun.
Well, some people don’t really care about historical accuracy in videogames and just wear what they think looks cool, ya know
@@yanmagno3 exactly! Everyone gets to be the way they want which is the best way to have a fun experience

You should do historical accuracy of red dead towns
This is on the short list. Been talking with another RUclipsr about collaborating on it.

Being born and raised in Kansas, it’s awesome to see that my state had such a huge impact on one of my favorite historical eras. Nice video!
Yeah, I always thought Kansas should exploit its western heritage much more. They obviously do so, but not to the extent of places like Texas, Arizona, Colorado, etc. It might be flat, but there's an amazing amount of history there, centered around one of the most beloved periods of American history and culture.
@@ManvsHistory I agree. I mean, I live in the same city as the famous lawman Bill Hickok, yet all we have of him is like 2 or 3 statues.
Oo could we get a historically accurate british/upper class outfit video? My character's an immigrant and I crave more historically accurate outfits for him.
I use my Haraway Hat, a dirty grey checkered shirt, dirty and dusty pants, red gerden spurs, a poncho with two wolf figures on the back, my brown worn ropers and of course, my brown horseman belt.
I want a historically accurate Spaghetti Western Clint Eastwood
hope one day that rdr will have a rancher dlc
Hook us up with a historically accurate woman-outfit next!
I’d imagine it’s just long dresses
@@dunbass7149 *Just* long dresses? There's so much variation to them! That's like saying men JUST wore vests and pants. D:
@@ShinFahima yeah but women weren’t exactly seen tne same as men
4:08 my man on the right be rocking that C96 Broomhandle.
Fact the Lone Ranger was based off of a black man who was a cattleman and a bounty hunter, who brought many to justice.
4:05
Whoa! That has to be either one well-off bar keep(?) on the right there or someone that really liked his firearms. One of the few times I've seen a C96 from the time period. They had to have been pretty rare.
You know someone loves the old west if the have hanging lanterns in their room and wood walls with no paint...
Ha! Indeed.
Makes me think of sailors coming into port, regarding the description of cowboys when they come into town. Same kinda scenario I suppose.
I'm genuinely upset it took me this long to find this guy 😡
But you're here now!
Welcome aboard, Daniel!
I've been waiting for this episode!!
Will you do a video all about the history of the Oregon Trail?
Great references for Roleplaying in Online, thank you!
Idk why but i watched this entire video like 10 x
If you're looking for a real historical account of what life was like in the West read 'A Vaquero of the Brush Country' by John Duncan Young. He covers everything thing from the work, what they wore, what they ate, what they rode and what firearms they used. Young was a real life cowboy and he documented it all.
U should do historically accurate outlaw
Please do more of these “how to create” episodes. They are awesome!
Could you also include the type of horses, equipment and weapons they used? That would be even better.
That's a really great idea, Saxon. I'll try and add that into the next one.
@@ManvsHistory Thanks :)
I’ve heard that smaller horses like the Morgan and Tennessee walker are the most accurate because it’s easier to hop on their back versus a Shire or Hungarian
I figure most will already know but despite it being a 'westen' the game mostly takes place in the south of fictionalized America
Yeah, pretty much just new Austin, And the grizzlies
not really. it encompasses pretty much all American regions into one map.
Love your videos man. Mixing my love of history and video games into many amazing videos. Thank you and keep making this great content.
Thanks, Mayne!
I wish R* would be going a more realistic route with the RDO content. The clothes for female characters are awful, they look so tacky :/
The corsets you can wear without anything under or over them are probably some of the worst offenders in terms of both tackiness and historical inaccuracy
I appreciate how much research u do for ur vids. Very underrated
