I again want to thank you for helping my friend with his research paper from a couple months ago. He got a great grade and is really proud it, and he is eternally grateful for your help and information!
I am well aware, my friend. With no exaggeration, I've had hundreds of comments on it. I'm repeatedly running into issues with this one though.... the first being my typical resources (newspapers, photo archives, museums, etc) here in the States are sparse on content involving it. Secondly, anything involving ethnicity is a powder keg on RUclips. I learned that lesson on the Native video. Neither my intentions nor qualifications matter to some folks- they're offended regardless. Their angst gets poured into the comment section, poisoning the community and creating significantly more work for me and my moderators. Sufficed to say, I'm not sure it's worth the trouble- particularly since this channel is my hobby, not my full-time profession. I just make videos in my spare time about stuff I'm interested in. And with the rapidly increasing politicization/ activism within higher ed (my job), I've always seen this channel as a place free from the outrage that accompanies it all. That said, I've been known to kick a hornet's nest from time to time, damn the consequences. So we'll see. But, I hear you, and others. If I can make it happen, at the level of quality that I require of my work, I might do so.
@@ManvsHistory as an actual Mexican, I would love to see this. Don't mind the haters getting riled up on our behalf, there's always going to be people like that but they don't represent us, and if history offends them then then that's their business, but if we listen to every offense monger then no content would ever get made lol. If you ever change your mind I recommend starting at charro clothes, I'm not well versed in exactly what they wore in the 19th century but judging from revolucionario pictures it seems that was the style most emulated, and it's still pretty common in northern Mexico, about as much as the cowboy style is still prevalent in the American south. In any case, cheers and thanks for the content!
I read this book called On the Border with Crook and it was about the 3rd Cav. during the Indian Wars around Arizona by the Superstition Mountains. I thought it was a really good book and it shed some light on the fighting that happened there.

I learn a lot of cool stuff in these videos, honestly I would love to just listen to you talk about history for six hours lmao. You present the facts as is with no bias or sugarcoating, acknowledging the bad things America did while also highlighting that our country was still rather young and developing at the time. If I may ask, where do you get all your information from? You seem to have a lot of access to old books and stuff like that. I've always wanted to do a bunch of digging on my own on various topics, but the internet is not always a reliable source.
Thank you, my friend! Mighty kind words. I strive to stay true to history- not political correctness. I get all my info from scholarly books, the Library of Congress newspaper archive, the British Newspaper Archives, and museum experts. Thanks, Tyler. I too love the blue workshirt. More than the frontiersman shirt in fact. Just looks much more rugged and authentic. Yeah, you can use any color of neckerchief- but they were not standard issue, so folks just purchased and wore what they wanted. Blue, red, black, and white were common. Hope that helps!

Actually the extended barrel on the Cattleman would match the 7.5in standard SAA pretty well. That model is often called the 'Cavalry' model for a reason. The standard barrel ingame is more like the 'artillery' model which is 5.5in I suppose you might use the long barrel to replicate the Bisley 12in SAA but that has a totally different grip also.
I honestly think you have a talent for making these videos where you connect gaming to their real life history counterparts. These videos are your peak 🙏❤️
quick correction at 9:30 - while yes, it was common for weapons and sometimes even uniform items, such as shoes or pistol belts, to be private purchase - this was mostly not the case as your typical enlistedman was far too poor to be able to afford some of these things however, it is very typical to see cavalrymen eschewing their standard issue holsters for open flap civilian holsters as fumbling with their issue holster's flap could sometimes mean life or death when you don't have time to fumble with it a little more clarification regarding uniform wear: gray flannels were adopted in the early 1870s and the dark blue flannel was adopted in the early 1880s, yellow lining on the trousers was only for ncos and officers - the stripe was wider the higher in rank you were, cavalry trousers also had reinforcing on the inside of the trousers for riding gloves were also issued to cavalrymen well before the civil war with many variations over the years following the civil war with yellow riding gloves being issued until the 1880s and white riding gloves were issued starting 1884
I would like to point out that I found out the studded pants in clean blue look PERFECT to m1883 trousers, I have a pair irl and the color and cut looks identical, way better than the clerk pants
Excellent as usual! The Relative Average Pay in One Hundred Occupations table is interesting. I had to look up the description of many of the obsolete occupations. I appreciate your attention to details and the enormous research you do.
A substitute for the yellow stripe of the trousers is to use the Carver pants when they are in stock. the yellow line is a bit meh but it works fine. I wish RDR2O had the frontiersman outfit gear for the PC.

Also Fort Vasquez in Plattville CO. No bigger then a modern home but walled and fortified. Lots of Indian attacks along the Platte and Pouder valleys back in the western days
The gun belt I use is called the Webster’s Gun Belt, it’s from the Collector role, it has tools and stuff on it that look cool. It may not be historically accurate but it looks nice for a little survival kit on the field

Some enemies in game can actually be seen wearing a dirty blue military uniform shirt my guess is either they were in the military and deserted or veterans but most likely deserted.
Osprey's men at arms is a really good source too. The Sacket Pants are a better alternative to the Clerk Pants since they give the outfit a rugged look, and the colour being off can be explained by weather damage. Or you can go with the weathered tan Clerk Pants to be a little closer to the US soldiers garrisoned at Fort Wallace.

Suspenders: cross back detail suspenders in tan/brown
Gloves: workman's gloves in black
Frontiersman belt (if you have it)
Pants: light blue clerk pants
Chaps: tan military half chaps
Boots: black cavalry boots
(I'll try to post a picture of my character)
Again, love the video man, I surely will make modifications to my outfit to make it more historically accurate.
I requested this video like a day ago but im sure others requested it too, but these types of videos are really interested
I’d love you to look into the everyday life of citizens around the world, story mode would probably be best for this, but making a video about the lives of lawmen, hunters, citizens, etc, seems like a great thing to look at!
I again want to thank you for helping my friend with his research paper from a couple months ago. He got a great grade and is really proud it, and he is eternally grateful for your help and information!
Thank god this video came out in my lunch period I’ve been looking forward to this for a while
7:35 - "The shrewd discernment of a half breed guide saved 200 lives." LOL, what a backhanded compliment to give your savoir.
We need that historically accurate Mexican outfit cmon mate
@@ManvsHistory Don't worry about haters, it is an important part of the culture of the old west and should be taught.
@@ManvsHistoryappreciate the reply mate, you do what’s best for you 👍🏼
@@ManvsHistory 😌💕
Was just watching “the 7th cavalry”. Inaccurate, I know. But I love classic movies, so I’m gonna go make one of their uniforms.
This channel is so awesome, video games are why I fell in love with history and now I'm going into grad school as an Americanist Scholar
I read this book called On the Border with Crook and it was about the 3rd Cav. during the Indian Wars around Arizona by the Superstition Mountains. I thought it was a really good book and it shed some light on the fighting that happened there.
I can't tell you how much I love these videos. Not only do you clearly love this game, you're also incredibly knowledgeable without ever coming across as stuck up or conceited.
I take all that and distill it down- trying to make it simple, accurate, and interesting.
The amount of research, footage acquisition, phone calls, editing--Man, you are a BEAST! Mind-blowing! 🤯
(My husband is actually related to Cynthia Ann Parker, and the Ross'es, so we read 'Empire of the Summer Moon' together with an especial interest-a great book!)
This is perfectly timed, as I have a 'noob' friend who wants to make his character a Soldier/Cavalryman. He was on the right track-but this will help. I'll make sure he checks out this video!
Thanks for all you do for us, Man! 🤠💕
Thanks, Whisky! Very cool! Cynthia Ann Parker is a tragic, but fascinating tale. Well covered by Gwynne. Glad to hear the video will be of use to your friend!
petition to get this guy on the rdo team
🙋🏼♀️ Second this!!
I third this!
The Frontiersman Outfit from the Outlaw Pass is Red Dead's equivalent to the Rough Riders outfit, another great option is to couple this outfit with Bill's Dedham hat from the Outlaw Pass to create a Teddy Roosevelt-esque outfit.
Been rocking that blue workshirt military fit for a while, it's probably one of my favorite RDO shirts tbh. Also, didn't know the yellow neckerchef was historically inaccurate. Will have to change mine out for a black one. Great vid though, love your content!
Hope that helps!
these videos have helped me with more stuff than just rdr2 im working on a mod series for a game called "people playground" and I've used this video as the basis for the outfit. And the mod is based on the Indian wars so this video is spot on! Keep up the great work man.
Edit: And these videos will help me in the mod series i just began tonight ill have more settlers and law men outlaws etc. and ill even try to take inspiration from the roles video I really love your videos they have helped me and I have to be at least .4% of the views i watch them so much
Actually the extended barrel on the Cattleman would match the 7.5in standard SAA pretty well. That model is often called the 'Cavalry' model for a reason. The standard barrel ingame is more like the 'artillery' model which is 5.5in
I suppose you might use the long barrel to replicate the Bisley 12in SAA but that has a totally different grip also.
You're correct here, Kyle. At first I thought the extended barrel was longer than 7.5", but upon reflection, I think it's correct as the cavalry 7.5".
I honestly think you have a talent for making these videos where you connect gaming to their real life history counterparts. These videos are your peak 🙏❤️
Thanks, Ryuu!
Awesome video we need more military esque stuff in the game like a calvary saber or a old style military shovel.
quick correction at 9:30 - while yes, it was common for weapons and sometimes even uniform items, such as shoes or pistol belts, to be private purchase - this was mostly not the case as your typical enlistedman was far too poor to be able to afford some of these things
however, it is very typical to see cavalrymen eschewing their standard issue holsters for open flap civilian holsters as fumbling with their issue holster's flap could sometimes mean life or death when you don't have time to fumble with it
a little more clarification regarding uniform wear:
gray flannels were adopted in the early 1870s and the dark blue flannel was adopted in the early 1880s, yellow lining on the trousers was only for ncos and officers - the stripe was wider the higher in rank you were, cavalry trousers also had reinforcing on the inside of the trousers for riding
gloves were also issued to cavalrymen well before the civil war with many variations over the years following the civil war with yellow riding gloves being issued until the 1880s and white riding gloves were issued starting 1884
If Rockstar was to make a Battlefield like multi player game with the theme '' General Custer last stand 1876'' they would be rich!
I would like to point out that I found out the studded pants in clean blue look PERFECT to m1883 trousers, I have a pair irl and the color and cut looks identical, way better than the clerk pants
Tbh man vs history is the best youtuber in the world and thanks for makin this vid
Ha! I'm not sure I'd go that far, but I won't stop you from saying it, lol. Thanks, Colton.
@@ManvsHistory no problem man keep up the good work!!!
Excellent as usual! The Relative Average Pay in One Hundred Occupations table is interesting. I had to look up the description of many of the obsolete occupations. I appreciate your attention to details and the enormous research you do.
Thanks Sue! We need to have another dinner, btw!
A substitute for the yellow stripe of the trousers is to use the Carver pants when they are in stock. the yellow line is a bit meh but it works fine. I wish RDR2O had the frontiersman outfit gear for the PC.
Could you do a historically accurate outdoorsman? A person that spends a lot of time outdoors and in nature. I have an outfit i really like but I want to make sure its historically accurate.
He's done a Mountain Man. Basically the same thing
Not only do I like that you tell us what items are accurate, I really really love that you give us historical backgrounds because they’re just so interesting and informative! Love all the hard work you do for us! And im really happy to see your channel growing ! Keep it up!
Ps please remember me when you get to 1million subscribers 😆 👍🏼
Thank you, Doc. I'll remember you!
@@northscrow9316 Thank you, Crow! Much obliged!
If you make your own custom military-like outfit for yourself, buy one of the military surplus outfits for Cripps and have a military surplus tent it actually looks like a small army camp which is pretty cool in my opinion
Oh man I’ve been waiting for this for so long now. You should make a Instagram so we can ask you direct questions that would be easier to access
Also Fort Vasquez in Plattville CO. No bigger then a modern home but walled and fortified. Lots of Indian attacks along the Platte and Pouder valleys back in the western days
🥳🥳 I’ve been Waiting for this one to release
I always thought the yellow handkerchiefs were strange. It makes sense that they were an artistic liberty courtesy of Hollywood.
This is not just a tutorial. This is a history lesson. Thank you.
Johnny I hardly knew / when Johnny comes marching home, good choice of music man
Everyone who plays rdo should watch theese videos... Awesome stuff!
The gun belt I use is called the Webster’s Gun Belt, it’s from the Collector role, it has tools and stuff on it that look cool. It may not be historically accurate but it looks nice for a little survival kit on the field
I've been waiting for this
I live in San Angelo Texas which is home to Fort Concho which I think housed an important general for Christmas, and because we don’t have pines out here they decorated a cedar bush
Absolutley love to see more Western content, always so refreshing to see RDO get some love!
literally 99% of his content is western
@@tom02061997 yeah and its great
Man I wish rockstar hire you for ideas :(( the amount of passion u put into it
You're breathing new life into a game we love. Good on ya.
Thanks, Jack!
My grandsons were quite excited to be a part of this! Nice enactment.
That's great! Who were your grandsons?
Man vs. History: Yellow Neckerchief is a Hollywood thing and not accurate
Me: *still wears Yellow neckerchief*
It does look good...
I can't tell you how long I've been waiting for this video! Great job man, keep it up
That new hd camera looking nice👌, amazing video by the way, keep them coming!
Thanks for noticing! Yeah, it's an upgrade for sure!
I really like how the outfit turned out. I hope Rockstar adds more variety of clothing to this game.
Waited for this video all day and when my phone alert went off... almost fell off my horse lol. No joke, I was talking a short ride... almost very short 😉
Wait- in real life or on the game?
🤣🐎💕
@@ManvsHistory real life lol. It was my own fault really. Just fumbled the phone and trying to catch. Totally oblivious I was still on the horse. She(Maggie a Appoloosa) is very calm and sweet so no worries.
@@richarddeaton5337 Ha! Awesome!
I love these videos. They make me actually remember the history I was taught unlike school.
Video Idea: "How to Create a Historically Accurate Lumberjack".
Also, I never knew that the Spencer was ever a standard issue weapon. Thought the military had never adopted a lever action rifle. Learn something new every day
Can you make a video about historical accurate hispanic outfits??
historically accurate cavalry men outfit ?
Close enough great video sir!
I believe there were a bunch of clothing items in the first Outlaw Pass that would be just perfect to create a nice soldier outfit. All your suggestions are great too. Very nice video as always!!! 🤘🤘🤘
I love your passion for American history and how you use this game to show it good job my friend
What other historically accurate period archetypes do you plan to cover in this series? Would any of them include female characters? btw I love these videos so much, they teach me so much about the wild west I'd never know otherwise!
great video. I love old forts. I visited Fort Missoula, Missoula Montana and Fort Bridger, Wyoming. I visited Little Bighorn NM.
Unrelated but those paintings of battles were incredible
You're the first to mention them! I love those artists- Frederick Remington and Charles Schreyvogel. I need to acquire some for my office.
@@ManvsHistory A modern Western artist you might also appreciate is Howard Terpening!😉
100% agreed!🤩
@@WhiskyGravy I'll have to check him out! Thank you!
@@WhiskyGravy Just looked him up. He's incredible. I loved 'The Ploy'. What an amazing painting.
Some enemies in game can actually be seen wearing a dirty blue military uniform shirt my guess is either they were in the military and deserted or veterans but most likely deserted.
the sheer amount of studying that this man does is honorable
Ha! Thanks, Lucas!
This has to be my most favorite video! Keep up the good work brother!
Please make a video on how to make a historically accurate Baron, I think that would be a really interesting one
A video about hunter or fur trader outfits would be greatly appreciated as that's my main role in the game
