i think it's because it would be easier for them to slow down the song during moments where ben really feels the song, rather than using a backing track
Well, I'm sure the size factor plays a part too.. Dear Evan Hansen only has a 7 piece band in their orchestra area above the stage while most other shows utilize orchestras that range from 15 to 26 players..I think that's a factor as to why you hardly see them on shows like TODAY with their respective shows performers.. 7 musicians are easier to set up space wise than a big orchestra..
I love how Ben is feeling this song, its a credit to his talent as a singer and an actor - I didn't matter that he was on a day time to show he was performing as he would on stage
Whenever I hear ben singing any deh song I live for that extra little vibrato in his voice. But when I hear anyone else sing the songs I always look for it but never hear it and am somehow disappointed?
My chorus teacher (who knows a lot about Broadway) says that on Broadway, instead of putting on vibrato they open the sound more on long notes and stuff.
I understand this is Broadway, and these people are at the absolute top of their game, but it still amazes me how this group manages to sound like 40 people.
I know there are only 8 cast members in this show, and for the longest time I wondered who the extras were in this performance. Then I realized these must be the understudies. It's really awesome that they included them in a TV performance like this. I think it made the performance even better.... it must have, because they won an Emmy for this.
3:01 and 3:31 Ben starts getting emotional from everyone. The vibe is the room was full of love and comfort and just everyone poured their soul out and really felt the song.
Um, I disagree ... that is NOT Ben. Trust me. It's Mike Park and some of the other Evans. I've played thru it a dozen times. I know Ben's voice -- and at 4:15, that is not Ben.
I love when Kristolyn steps up to the microphone and Ben looks at her as if he is saying, "Sing it, girl!" And then Will steps up to sing as well. Then when the whole cast steps up and starts singing.....it's magic!

For most of my life, I hid my emotions. I had the same doubts, fears, and anxieties of the characters in DEH, but soldiered through. My parents had serious health issues and my brother was disabled. That was my growing up. Coming of age was hard enough. Coming out was no option when I was young. But I got through it and have shared a good and rewarding life with friends, family, and the love of my life. And yet, when I first heard this song, I became a sobbing mess. It was the song of my life, the song of my heart, and the song of the miracle that I was found.
Angelica Schuyler we just spent the week in NYC just to see this show. Well worth it!!! There’s something about seeing & hearing it live as opposed to on tv that’s just amazing. If u get the chance, go!!!!

Saw this in NYC a few weeks ago, don't know how anyone could give it a thumbs down, totally touched everyone in the theatre, my daughter is changed, she lost her dad a few months ago, all the music has been so therapeutic and makes you realize, no matter what happens in your life, you are not alone.
Fantastic performance! It sounds just like the broadway original. I love Ben’s solo in the beginning with his vulnerable voice in character all the way to the ensemble layering their vocals in the chorus. Definitely worth Emmy Gold!

this! this performance right here is what got me into dear evan hansen. i heard about the show before, but never really listened to the music or anything. i knew it was popular, but well that doesn't always have to mean anything. boy, i was wrong! when i first saw this video i had like a "cathartic breakthrough". the tears just kept coming. this song touched me in such an emotional way. i've only been a fan of the show for maybe 1.5 years now, but this may i got to see the show on broadway, which was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. i even got to take some photos with actors at the stage door. i will never forget this day! so, thank you evan hansen
