Is It OK for Christians to Be Cremated? | Episode 61

  • According to the National Funeral Directors Association, approximately 58 percent of people in the U.S. are now cremated at death. That number has risen dramatically in recent years, and is expected to keep climbing. Experts note that religion is a major influence in the decision of how to dispose of the body at death. For example, until 1963, the Roman Catholic Church prohibited cremation for members.
Does cremation violate God’s Word, or is it an acceptable choice for believers? Dr. David K. Bernard answers this question by explaining the Scriptural view of the human body and how it relates to cremation.

When my son passed away, I had no money what so ever and needed to arrange for his funeral. In North Carolina, the financial resources did not allow for payments on a burial, so I had him creamated. My family has been UPCI for several generations, and we have had evangelists and preachers in my family, so I confirmed with them that there was nowhere in the bible that says creamation was a sin. God provided me with the exact amount of money for his creamation through go fund me. Thank you, Jesus, for blessing me with what I needed.

Thank you Bro.Bernard. Such sound Biblical wisdom. My dear husband hated funerals. He wanted to be cremated. God took him home, Christmas Night 2014. My Great Pastor purchased a beautiful urn, and we had a celebration of his life. I have a place of honor for his ashes. I have chosen cremation for myself. This lesson this morning gives me a greater peace of mind. God Bless you.

Many have to choose cremation for economic reasons, laying to rest is so disproportionately expensive in our country. So appreciate Brother Bernard's discussion on the matter...

Bible mainly refers to the Hebrew tradition of burying the dead. But when preaching and spreading Christianity in the Eastern countries where the tradition is cremation, we in Nepal, the Catholics cremate our dead and bring the ashes and place it in the column barrium on the wall within the church premises with the name, date of birth and date of death so that family members and friends can come and light candles and pray any time they want and especially on 2nd November All Souls' Day. Thus it keeps everybody happy and is nonobjectionable by the non Christian neighbors as well. In fact many non Christians appreciate it when they learn that we honor our dead loved ones in this unique way.

Cremation is an eastern pagan ritualistic tradition such as Hinduism. Hindus are burn or cremated when they die.
Biblically speaking NONE of the saints in the Bible from Abraham to the New Testament saints were cremated.
Abraham even bought a burial place for his entire family.
Joseph wanted to be brought back to the land of Canaan- now Israel to be buried with his ancestors- the same land Abraham bought for his lineage burial place.
God buried Moses personally. This also tells us, that if God did the burial for Moses, should we follow Almighty God in this tradition.
John the Baptist body was afterwards buried by his followers.
So as the rest of Christ apostles and New Testaments saints.
The saints of God should follow God in proper burial of the body instead of desecrating it into burning oven, furthermore NOT follow ritualistic eastern pagan religion.

@@bhaktabdrtamang5805 That sounds very nice. Where i live, for 20yrs haven't been able to find a cemetery that a headstone can be placed. They are all full and no new cemeteries allow stones. It's interesting to read the headstones, etc. That'd sad. All flat .Don't think anyone will visit my grave, if they do they can write my name in the dirt. ($2,000.00, and I can't afford teeth!). 😆
I'm glade i learned much about burials at the Bible Studies i went to when the Lord Quickened me!!! Learned so much. Eyes were opened. Praise God!

Thank you! So much for speaking on this subject of cremation. My husband of 39 years passed away in 2017.. I didn't have no money for a burial...so I went with cremation. My son came down and I expressed my concern. He said "Mom, cremation just speeds up the progress of 'Dust, thou was and dust thou will return'. I quit worrying of I had done the right thing. I know God can still find him...at the resurrection. Thank you! Again...for your thoughts on this subject.

THE GOSPEL OF THE WORD OF ALMIGHTY GOD "is a great last day that He will save man"
(God Came to Work on Earth to save Corrupt mankind. The present is not the same as the past. The salvation granted today occurs during the last day, when everyone is separated according to type)
      Almighty God said
Now God is judging you, chastising you, and punishing you, but you need to know that the point of punishing you is for you to know yourself. He is PUNISHING, JUDGING, and PUNISHING so that you KNOW YOURSELF, to CHANGE YOUR DISPOSITION, and in addition, so that you KNOW YOUR VALUE, and SEE THAT ALL OF GOD'S ACTIONS ARE RIGHTEOUS and IN ACCORDANCE WITH HIS DISPOSITION and It is necessary in His WORK, that He WORKS ACCORDING TO HIS PLAN for MAN'S SALVATION, and that He is the RIGHTEOUS GOD who LOVES, SAVES, JUDGES, and PUNISHES MAN. 🙏
If you only KNOW that YOUR STATUS IS LOW, that YOU ARE CORRUPT and DISOBEDIENT, BUT YOU DON'T KNOW THAT GOD WANTS TO MAKE HIS SALVATION CLEAR THROUGH the JUDGMENT and PUNISHMENT HE DOES TO YOU NOW, YOU HAVE NO WAY TO GET EXPERIENCE, especially you have NO ABILITY to CONTINUE TO MOVE FORWARD. GOD DID NOT COME TO KILL or DESTROY, BUT TO JUDGE, CURSE, CHASSIS, and SAVE. ☀️
UNTIL His 6,000 year GOVERNMENT PLAN is COMPLETED---BEFORE He REVEALS the OUTCOME of EVERY CATEGORY of HUMANS---GOD'S WORK on EARTH is FOR SALVATION, IT'S PURPOSE is ONLY to MAKE it PERFECT---COMPLETELY ---those who LOVE Him and SUBJECT to His RULE. HOWEVER GOD SAVES PEOPLE, IT DOES ALL BY IDENTIFYING them in their OLD SATANIC NATURE; that is, He SAVES them THROUGH ENCOURAGING them to DESIRE LIFE.
If they DON'T DO that, THERE is NO WAY they can RECEIVE GOD'S SALVATION. SALVATION is the WORK of GOD HIMSELF, and DESIRE for LIFE is SOMETHING that MAN MUST DO to RECEIVE SALVATION. ☀️
In HUMAN EYES, SALVATION is GOD'S LOVE, and GOD'S LOVE CANNOT BE PUNISHMENTS, JUDGMENTS, and CURSES; SALVATION MUST be accompanied by love, compassion, and in addition, words of comfort, as well as the eternal blessings bestowed by God.
People believe that when God saves people, He does so by touching them with His blessings and grace, so that they give their hearts to God. That is, His touching people is His saving them.
This type of rescue is done through reconciliation. When God grants them a hundred times, only then will people submit to God's name and strive to do good for Him and bring Him glory.
THIS IS NOT GOD'S PURPOSE for MANKIND. GOD CAME TO WORK ON EARTH to SAVE CORRUPTED HUMANITY; there is no lie here.
If there was, He certainly did not come to do His work personally.
In the past, His way of salvation included a display of ultimate love, so He gave everything to Satan, the brother of all mankind.
The PRESENT is NOT the SAME AS the PAST: THE SALVATION GIVEN to YOU NOW HAPPENS DURING the LAST DAYS, WHEN EVERY ONE is SEPARATE BY KIND; the WAY of your SALVATION is NOT LOVE or COMPASSION, BUT PUNISHMENT and JUDGMENT, so that MAN CAN be more COMPLETELY SAVED. 🙏
THEREFORE, ALL YOU RECEIVE is PUNISHMENT, JUDGMENT, and RUINLESS STRIKES, BUT YOU SHOULD KNOW THIS: IN THIS RUINLESS STRIKES THERE is NO LITTLE PUNISHMENT. ☀️
NO MATTER HOW HARM My WORDS ARE, WHAT COMES to YOU ARE JUST A FEW WORDS THAT MAY SEEM COMPLETELY HEARTLESS to YOU, and HOW MUCH My ANGER is, WHAT COMES TO YOU ARE STILL WORDS of TEACHING, and I DON'T INTEND to HURT you or KILL you. ☀️
      Isn't this all true?
YOU SHOULD KNOW THAT AT THIS TIME, WHETHER IT IS RIGHTEOUS JUDGMENT OR HEARTLESS REFINING and PUNISHMENT, EVERYTHING os FOR THE SAKE of
      SALVATION. ☀️
WHETHER it is NOW SEPARATE EACH ONE BY TYPE or EXPOSING CATEGORIES of PEOPLE, the PURPOSE of ALL GOD'S WORDS and WORKS is TO SAVE THOSE WHO TRULY LOVE GOD. RIGHTEOUS JUDGMENT is MADE to PURIFY PEOPLE, and HARD REFINEMENT is MADE to PURIFY them; HURTING WORDS or PUNISHMENT are both MADE to PURIFY and for SALVATION.☀️🙏
THEREFORE, the METHOD of SALVATION TODAY is NOT the SAME DAY.
NOW YOU ARE SAVED BY RIGHTEOUS JUDGMENT, and THIS IS A GOOD TOOL to SEPARATE EACH ONE of YOU ACCORDING to KIND. ☀️
Besides, CRUEL PUNISHMENT SERVES your ULTIMATE SALVATION---and what can you say in the face of such chastisement and judgment?
Have you not always enjoyed salvation, from beginning to end?
You have seen God incarnate and realized His infinite power and wisdom; and besides, you have experienced repeated beatings and discipline.
However, have you not also received the greatest grace? Are not your prayers greater than others?
YOUR GRACES are even more ABUNDANT than the GLORY and RICHES that SOLOMON ENJOYED! Think about this:
If My purpose in coming was to judge and punish you instead of saving you, would your life have lasted? ☀️
Are you still alive, sinful creatures of flesh and blood?
If my goal was only to punish you, why did I incarnate and start such a big project?
CAN'T YOU LOW MORTAL BE PUNISHED FOR JUST SPEAKING ONE WORD? Will I still have to exterminate you after I have deliberately condemned you?
Do you still not believe these words of mine? Can I save man only through love and compassion? ☀️
Or can I just use the crucifixion to save people?
Isn't My righteous disposition more pleasant to make man completely obedient? Is it not more capable of completely saving man? 🙏
From " You Must Set Aside the Blessings of Status and Understand God's Will to Bring Man's Salvation"
Fulfillment of "When I looked up, someone handed me a book wrapped in a scroll. I opened it and I read on both sides the prayers, lamentations, and curses." (Ezekiel 2:9-10). ... "His garment was stained with blood. He was called the "Word of God" (Rev. 19:13).
The kingdom He brought down and set up in the highest in the sky so that it can occupy His creation in the universe and engrave on it the entirety of His Holy name "THE CHURCH OF ALMIGHTY GOD" 💐 fulfillment of (Mat. 16:18) "And I say as for you, you are Peter, on top of this rock I will build my Church, that even the power of death will not be able to overcome it.". ... and "The Letter to the Church in Philadelphia" (Rev. 3:7-13). ... And fulfillment of "The New Jerusalem" 💫 (Rev. 21:10) "The Spirit enveloped me, and the angel led me to the top of a very high mountain. He showed Me Jerusalem, the Holy City, which coming down from heaven from God."
(1 Peter 4:17) "For the time has come in the house of God for the beginning of judgment in the house of God."
📩 Calling and leading the sheep of God to His glorious Throne "THE CHURCH OF ALMIGHTY GOD"💐 to submit again to His authority so that He will continue to teach, guide and protect even in plague, famine and wild animals will not be moved by it and completely win this final battle with the big red dragon!
"They say with a loud voice, "Salvation comes from the Lamb, and from our God who sits on the Throne!" (Rev. 7:10). ... "But you are a chosen race, a company of royal priests, a a nation dedicated to God, a people belonging to God to declare the wonderful things he has done. He is the one who calls you out of darkness into wonderful light." (1 Peter 2:9). ... and fulfillment that it will be built above the sky/RUclips in (Isaiah 2:2) "In the Last Day, the mountain on which Jehovah's temple stands will stand out above all the mountains. All nations will flock there. " ☀️ 💌

Good Job Pastor! I’m Born Again and my wish is to be cremated! I had the opportunity to work in a Funeral Home for five years and had to burry many people! I also helped with cremation services! I had to at times move a buried body from one place to another and that was difficult for me! But I’m partly Cherokee Indian and our people have done fire rituals for thousands of years and my decision is to be cremated because of that! You see folks, God loves you whether you are worm food or burnt ashes! His Promise is that if you are Born Again you will see Heaven!

I have less than $200 dollars left after everyone gets theirs. No family just me. How am i supposed to be buried with nothing. Funeral home wants their money. I went through that with both my parents. I have no choice but once we die our spirit stays alive. I prayed and ask several Christians about cremation and they pretty much said the same as this pastor.

I’m the early church Romans not only crucified the Christians, they also burned them on the crosses. Christians were used as “torches” in the Colosseum during the persecution of Nero. All of these martyrs will be be going in the rapture to meet Christ in the air. The most important thing is remember that we must be born again of water and spirit; Acts 2:38

This was how I logically came to the conclusion ages ago. When my parents wanted to be cremated (the first in a very LARGE extended family) there was a low rumble of dissent. Until I asked, what about those burned at the stake, what about a person who dies and is buried at sea, and the body is eaten by fish. The GOD who created us in the first place, is well able to recreate us with the same😮 molecules. He numbers the stars, not one is lost. He is able. LIFE wins!

Interesting word you used to explain your thoughts. "Popular," Jesus said in Matthew's writing straight is the gate and narrow is the way that leadeth unto life and few there be that find it. Because wide is the gate and broad is the way that leadeth to destruction and many there be which go in there at. So, by Jesus words alone popularity is a poor and unstable reason to make a serious decision concerning life's tough decisions.

While the Bible doesn't explicitly forbid cremation, I believe that cremation breaks the typology of burial in the ground. I know of only one instance of cremation in the Bible and that is burning of King Saul's body. Cremation was a pagan practice. King Saul's body was cremated as a type of judgement (I believe anyway) and therefore I don't believe in cremation. The Bible doesn't explicitly forbid it, but I believe it breaks a typology.

I find it odd that he did not mention what happens to the body that's dead under the ocean. Can t body be resurrected ? He did not quote scripture just generalized conception about his views I found this to not be a biblical explanation if someone dies in a house fire, what's the case for the soul ? I feel its the holy spirit that leaves the body and the holy sprit never does butbassends to heaven. What happens to the body in those cases ?

I don’t quite understand what you mean. The same spirit that dwells in Christ will resurrect us. Fire, ocean , etc are irrelevant. It is the Holy Spirit that is everlasting. That is why you must be filled with the spirit of Christ.

When the early Christians were covered with tar and burned as torches for illumination for the night games in the Roman Colosseum, or fed to the animals, all the others questioned the Apostle Paul about how they could be resurrected when their bodies were pulverized to dust. Paul assured them that no matter WHAT condition we left our earthly bodies, we could be assured that we WILL be resurrected with the same type of body Jesus had after his resurrection! He wrote:
"For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens."

According to the Torah of G-d, "the L-rd G‑d formed man of dust from the ground"12 - and must therefore return to the earth. This is expressed in the words that G‑d tells Adam, the first man,13 "For dust you are, and to dust you will return."
This concept is reiterated in Deuteronomy,14 where we are commanded to bury the dead: "You shall bury him on that day." In addition, this person said he thinks, which means it's an opinion, not a fact. Who's a man or being to override what the G-d of Israel said? The whole entire body must be buried. If a person is accidentally cremated or burned in a fire, that is a special circumstance that G-d Himself deals with, if we can bury the ashes in the ground, it's a mitzvah. But if one chose to be cremated, the soul will be in agony. I understand that coffins are expensive, but why not a wooden box? Funerals are over price productions, which is meaningless. The difference is I'm providing facts, not opinions. It's best to do your research and ask G-d for His Truth.

I believe that cremation is an increased rate of decomposition and burial is a slow rate of decomposition. Both are done to the fleshly body and God's Word tells us, (that is, in my flesh) dwells no good thing: But we shall be raised up in a glorified body.

I highly recommend the book: A Christian Ending; a Handbook for Burial in the Ancient Christian Tradition. Not being cremated has nothing to do with whether or not God can put people back together. Such a weak tea argument. Instead of looking for ways to get out of doing something, look for ways to engage in Holy tradition.

When the body dies, the soul and the spirit go back to YAHWEH who gave BOTH of these entities to the body to have made it a complete human being of the "BODY, "SOUL" and "SPIRIT". In the Book of Ecclesiastes, it is said that the "spirit" goes back to YAHWEH who gave it to the body in the first place together with the "spirit" who is originally "spiritually dead" to begin with. Dr. Dave Bernard is a Oneness Pentecostal as opposed to being a TRINITARIAN or a REFORMED Christian of the Evangelical - Baptist Persuasion.
What I understand is that, the body rots upon death and may be eaten by the fish if the person dies in the ocean or get burnt to ashes in the case of a fire incidence, but it really does not matter; the reason being that it is the SOUL that is ETERNAL and not the body. The SPIRIT goes back to YAHWEH once the person dies! It was only temporarily given to the person as it is the spirit given to us that is "communicating" with the Creator Elohim and not the soul! It is also mentioned in the Bible that YAHWEH will give the person a TOTALLY NEW BODY in place of the dead body.
This NEW body shall then re-unite with the soul that YAHWEH "retrieved" from the dead body in Heaven above at the RAPTURE of the Believers! I supposed that the NEW BODY will have the SOUL but that the SPIRIT part will no longer be necessary since in the eternal life that the believer has, he / she will be able to communicate with KING YAHSHUA HAMASHIACH just like how we communicate with another person.
The SPIRIT that was given to us was only needed as the means how the ELECT shall communicate with YAHWEH. BTW, the spirit of the UNSAVED that went to HELL was deemed "spiritually dead" all his/her life on Earth as UNBELIEVERS! Only the BELIEVERS have their spirits made ALIVE by YAHWEH and therefore INDWELLED by the HOLY SPIRIT as Born Again FOLLOWERS of CHRIST YAHSHUA!
Whether the dead body is cremated or not, I am of the opinion that it really does not matter at all. It does NOT affect SALVATION of the ELECT of YAHWEH who are already SAVED before they died (passed away).

When my wife contacted a local Funeral Home, the salesman was insulted that she wanted the least expensive option available and was mildly rude. Our only option was cremation. My mother just passed a few weeks ago, no life insurance, no money and nothing to sell, my two brothers and I have no choice but cremation. Traditional burial is too expensive unless the deceased is insured for at least $10,000.00.

I’d really like to see a video on preachers being remarried. The Bible says that a bishop should only have one wife. I was told bishop just means preacher. I’ve also heard it was referring to Polygamy. My next question is what if they were remarried before getting the Holy Ghost? Now having been born again does this make them able to preach keeping the wife they have since joining the church? This seems to be a big topic in my local area. It’s so confusing and I get frustrated without an answer and a evangelist comes to preach being remarried. I automatically have some kind of guard up not knowing can I trust the preaching or not.

We are to put our Trust in God. Jesus says, "not to trust man, put our Trust in Him.

It says that the sea gives up those dead in it.
It refers to this happening when the scroll of life is opened
    - see previous verses.
So it seems that even if the body is not found, this will not prevent a resurrection.
So our goodbye ceremonies are personal to us.
God however is able to overcome all things, in respect of our loved ones.

No one said God can't resurrect your body no matter what condition it's in, the holy book says to respect the Temple of the Holy Spirit that's what we're talkin about. And to perform a paganistic ritual cremation it's not respecting the Temple of the Holy Spirit... let's correct some you're not Apostolic at all there are four marks of Christ's Church one that's Unity to Apostolic holy and Universal. Protestants are not Apostolic they fight amongst each other's and disagreement of the Holy scriptures it's whatever Pastor you listen to his private interpretation of the holy book even Pentecostal Church of God churches on the same block disagree with each other on interpretation of scriptures each of you are following a man your pastors and his private interpretation of the holy book. The holy book says they even went so far as to even burnt the bones. So whose words are you going to obey, the pagans in cremation or the holy book that says to have respect for the Temple of the Holy Spirit...

I disagree the Bible is not silence on burial. Many places in the Bible talk about burials.
Since the begining God established how to bury the body
"Genesis 3:19. “Dust you are and to dust you will return.”"
If Yeshua (Jesus) is our Lord and Savior shouldn't we follow His examples? If He was buried shouldn't we do the same?
If Muslim follow everything Mohammed tought them
Why can't we follow Yeshua's footsteps.

Neither was Jesus body EMBALMED and He was buried in the tomb before Sundown on His day of Death. If you deviate from this in any way and critical of cremation you are a hypocrite.
BTW King David praised the men that risked their lives to Cremate King Saul and His sons after they had died in battle. The men BURNED their bodies and Buried their bones

Amos 2:1 - "Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of Moab, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because he burned the bones of the king of Edom into lime:" Note that this is the king of Edom, the descendants of Esau. God said, that he had loved Jacob but had hated Esau. So it's not likely that he sent this prophecy to Amos out of his great love for Edom. No, it's more likely that he isn't pleased with cremation.

I am a Christian, and without even watching this video, the answer is Yes, it's OK, because if a Christian is burnt to death in a horrible fire that consumes them ands leaves nothing, which can happen, than they were cremated, not as they chose to be, but by accident.

The body doesn't go to Sheol or Hades, our soul does. The dead body stays in the grave when the soul is resurrected..
    1 Corinthians 15:
“In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.”
“For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.”
“So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.”

Cremation is not a Christian practice. If Lazarus has been cremated, how could Jesus resurected him after 4 days in the grave. Fron Abraham to the Christian era, all of them was buried according to the bible. Jacob when he was dying, told his sons that he must be buried back to Israel where his forefathers was buried. Jesus also was buried.
The practice of cremation is practiced by Buddhism and hinduism and pagans. But Judaism, Islam and Christian religion does not practiced this.
From the dust you are created and to the dust you shall return(Gen. 3:19).
When you burn a substance, it will turn to ashes. And dust is different from ashes.

Well resurrection is not for buried bodies only. Any person that existed will be assembled again. God doesn't want us to cremate however.

Yes it is. The Bible says dust to dust, ashes to ashes. The Vatican okays Cremation, however says do not spread the ashes. You bury the ashes as that is the body remains.

Since the Bible doesn’t say cremation is a sin, it’s not a sin. The soul goes to heaven or hell immediately after death. God won’t force the soul to wait until the family decides to bury or cremate to decide if that soul should go to heaven. I’ll be in heaven before my cremation actually happens.

Somehow, cremation just doesn’t set right with me. My body is the temple of the HOLY GHOST and the SCRIPTURE does say if any man destroy the temple, him will GOD destroy. Hmm, I don’t know, just my own feelings.

I'm pretty sure the Holy Ghost won't inhabit your body once you've passed on... pretty sure He's only interested in residing in it with you present.

At death the body is NO LONGER the temple, thus your statement doesn't apply, BUT I also agree that something about it doesn't set right with me, that's why I'm considering LIQUID cremation and NOT FIRE.

IF you read or hear about the process of embalming & what's done TO the body for viewing you may feel the same way, all the cutting, puncturing, etc seems VERY unnecessary.

The Bible doesn't mention cremation because it doesn't matter, the soul leaves the body after death. Use your common sense, if we are all incinerated in a nuclear attack we're still going to heaven

Without watching the video... People die in fires. Is that something that God cannot overcome? Understand the person is dead. They can't do anything. The apostles... did they choose the manner of their passing (well it is said Peter chose an innocuous modification of crucifixion)? This is such a non-question. The only way how a person is interned can effect their spiritual disposition is if they prearranged their internment has some irreverent spiritual connotation such as legally lending their body to be part of a demonic ritual (an act taken while they were alive). It's irrelevant what is done to this body after our passing.
