    00:00 Best Men's Wallet Introduction
As card and digital purchases have become more commonplace. Some argue the utility of a quality wallet is decreasing but a wallet is essential for organizing your cards, string spare cash, temporary storage of ephemera.
In addition to practical applications, wallets are an extension of your overall look and help express your personality.
    01:27 History of the Wallet
Origins of the word wallet are relatively obscure. For most of its history, wallet referred generally to any leather case. Indicates wallets could look more like a knapsack than a modern wallet.
For most of human history, currency, primarily in the form of coins, was transported in pouches, chests, on strings, or even in people's mouths, according to some passages in Aristophanes. It wasn’t until the introduction of paper currency in the late 17th century that wallets began to be exclusively associated with carrying money.
    06:03 Wallet Types - a. Coat Wallet
Because there are so many wallet types and your choice is dictated by functionality, comfort, and appearance, let’s examine wallet types according to these criteria: even though digital wallets and electronic payments abound these days
    07:23 b. Minimalist Wallet/Cardholder
    08:47 c. Billfold Wallet
    09:30 d. Case/Pouch Wallet
11:04 e. Specialty and Travel Wallets
    11:34 Wallet Materials - a. Rigid Materials
Wallets may have begun as leather pouches but now they’re available in a plethora of materials:
    12:25 b. Plastic
    12:30 c. Leather
    14:29 Leather Quality
Check for aniline-dyed, not pigment coated. Aniline dying can only be done on superlative quality leather because it doesn’t hide anything from you. Characteristic leather pores should be visible.
16:23 Wallet Features & Construction Details
Some manufacturers will use leather on the exterior but opt for cheaper materials for the interior, like the divider or slots. We use full leather dividers for our Fort Belvedere Wallets.
    17:46 Wallet Colors
Classic colors like brown & black have been popular for decades and complement any outfit but can be a little pedestrian. And while you could get a wallet in any color in the rainbow, that could be distracting.
Pairing interesting color combinations give wallets unique visual interest and personality without being distracting. Also, consider Contrast stitching. Another Classic subtle detailing choice Monogramming. We recommend blind-embossing by focusing on timeless and versatile detailing.
    18:26 What Wallet is Best?
There are so many in the market and we've tried quite a few for this video and the previous times but there's a lot of change going on in the marketplace. Rather than giving you specific recommendations, we urge you to learn the quality of leather and when you can identify that, you can find a wallet that will work for you.
19:13 How Much to Spend on a Wallet?
As you’ve seen in our Is It Worth It? series, leather is one material where you really get what you pay for. For wallets, the cost is often dictated by how much leather was used to make them.

The card slots in women's wallets face inward, so there's no concern for the cards to slip out without me noticing. I purchased a fort belvedere wallet. The burgundy and teal one.
I got it I think 2 or 3 years ago and it almost looks like the day I purchased it (minor scuffs only from dropping it and having a few drinks and deserts spill on it when I put it on the table when I used to date)
I carry it with me every day and I am impressed with the craftsmanship.
I would recommend everyone to shell out these $270 for the wallet as it will last you (from what I see for now) a lifetime, during which you will probably use 20 wallets that cost $20.
You save the planet, and you save your future self money.

I wonder, is there a protocol describing where you should hold your wallet? I mean, what pocket, trousers, jacket, etc... What is the correct use of all your other pockets. This may seem frivolous, but after some real-life scenarios and experimenting, I've got to say, it's paramount to wallet use and/or pocket use. I just wonder if there are guidelines for this subject from which I could learn on. Thx.

Wallets need to stop with those plastic windows for IDs. We always have to take our IDs out to show it so that plastic window doesn't do anything. The other gripe about those plastic windows is that over period of time, they change colors. To me it makes the wallet look cheap.

The bulk and heaviness of my wallet is really bugging me. I opted for a new one the other day that looked slimmer (my previous on is worn out anyway) turns out the reason why it looked slimmer was because it's actually bigger so it's more cumbersome than the previous one, i wait to see how it gets old (and even though it was cheap, I will wear it out long enough to get used to it and to fond the right way for me to carry: my id, my debit cards, my bus subscription, my license in the future, bank notes, coins and some fidelity cards (might upgrade those to a seperate card wallet but coins are the biggest of the bulk for me and i have to constantly have a coin on my person since i'm grocery shopping once a week)
I do not keep my wallet in my trousers as i find it uncomfortable so i'm glad to discover coat wallets exist
Ooh i really like the idea of the cigar/pouch/makeup holder wallet
I'm non binary,i knit and sew a lot and i have a huge clasp (think tiny minimalist granny purse clasp, i guess i might make a pocket purse or something)

The back pockets on a trouser are for gloves and handkerchiefs, you can comfortably have a wallet with coin pouch at the front pocket and I don’t think is a good idea carrying a smartphone that could bend at back pockets, so left front pocket for wallet and right for smartphone.

Hi Sven, great insight into wallets' history and thanks for providing gentleman's opinion. Wallets are such elegant accessories that I am really interested in their future in the context of modern ways of payments.
As a leathercrafter I would like to provide some comments/recommendations/observations. Here, I disclaim that leathercrafting is my hobby and I have no intentions to support any leathercrafting businesses.
By a gentlemen I always understand a man that, besides "being a man of good and courteous conduct", carries a certain "nobility" in his lifestyle.
    1) Wallet is a very personal piece of accessory, selection of which very depends on deep person's taste and preferences. I strongly recommend NOT to provide a wallet as a gift unless the gifted person chooses it. High risk of the gifted person will not like it.
    2) There are a few grades of leather. The best is full-grain vegetable tanned leather. Only full-grain does consists of the entire top layer ("skin") and has the most dense fabric structure, which ensures its durability; other types like top-grain, split, or genuine leather are cheap alternatives that try to look like full-grain to disguise a customer. Veg tanning lasts longer and uses natural ingrediencies (e.g., tree bark), while chrome tanning is a cheap mass production that may chemically interact with metals in your wallet.
    3) Exotic leathers do not necessarily have better material properties than good old cow hide.
    4) Like watches, different wallets are used for different situations. Gentlemen shall use different wallets for travelling, for visiting theatre, for a dinner in a restaurant, for every day carry, etc. You can have a "bigger" wallet in you briefcase and a "smaller" wallet for your essentials or the most frequently used items; actually, I have seen this operational model for quite a few of my customers.
    5) The best way for a gentleman to have a wallet that reflects his personality is by ordering a bespoke wallet at leathercraft shop. Gentlemen can then define his needs and preferences - purpose, design, expected wallet load - these are the key questions I ask my customers. You may have a set of wallet with matching design, or a design that matches your other leather accessories (maybe made by the same leathercrafter). No limits. Leathercrafters have plenty previous projects that may inspire a gentlemen.
    6) Like watches (again), by using a wallet custom made by a professional leathercrafter a gentleman shows off an accessory of an ultimate craftmanship. If the gentlemen wants to show off an expensive product, exotic leathers are not necessary. Leathercrafters have no problem to incorporate such an artistic level to a wallet by using carving, stamping and other artistic techniques that the price can be high enough so that the gentlemen is not ashamed :).
    7) A gentleman takes care of his surroundings, including environment and its future. Firstly, the gentleman shall generally opt for a high quality durable timeless products so he minimizes waste production; full-grain veg tanned leather fits this perfectly as humans use leather for quite a few thousands of years. Secondly, the gentleman shall prefer leathers that are side products of other agricultural processes (e.g., cow hides, shell cordovan, goat leather) instead of using leathers of endangered species.
I hope you find my comments interesting and useful.

I adore the Ridge wallet. It ended my search for a wallet, and if I ever lose it or wear it out, I'll get another one. I hate having stuff in my pockets, so the ridge works because I never carry more than a few cards on me, and took the money clip off, so on the off chance I have cash I use a separate money clip.

Where I live if you pay by credit or debit card, it is taken from your account only 3-4 days after, so you rapidly lose track of your spendings. While if you use hard cash, you know exactly how much you have. Wallet is needed

I'm wondering if anyone sees this comment if they can point me to a brand/website that sells good quality billfold wallets that can also monogram them like mentioned in the video. Interesting that you referred to the “modern” £1 note. The £1 note was actually withdrawn back in 1988 in favour of the £1 coin. The lowest value note in the UK is the £5 note.
