Audi vs Audi line-ups don’t get much better than this!
Mat’s lining up in the all-new Audi RS3, and he’s facing off against a 1985 Audi Sport Quattro S1 Group B rally car!!
So let’s compare the stats on these two 5 cylinder beasts! Starting with the RS3, it’s powered by a 2.5-litre 5-cylinder turbo that can put down 400hp & 500Nm. It drives all four wheels and weighs in at 1,575kg. A new one today will cost you around £57,000.
Then we have the rally car. It’s up on power compared to the RS3, with its 2.1-litre 5 cylinder turbo producing 500hp & 480Nm. Naturally, it’s also lighter, tipping the scales at 1,090kg. And given its age, it’s worth a whole lot more than the RS3, with an insurance value of £1,700,000!!
However, there’s one key difference compared to the RS3 - it’s equipped with a 6-speed manual! Will that prove the difference? There’s only one way to find out… LET’S RACE!
    Mat's RS3 deal: bit.ly/Audi-RS3-Deal-1106

I'm sure the car was tweaked to 650BHP back in the day, which would have made this drag race pointless. It was an intoxicating/addictive experience at the time. 500hp is a mild rebuild of that engine compared to it's competition build. I'm sure I read in an old Road and Track that it put out something like 640+hp in competition form - of course at that performance level, they would likely need to rebuild it every 3 or 4 races. 500hp from a daily driver version of that little engine isn't too shabby though. I used to have the boring version of that engine in an Audi 90. Even the boring version sounded super nice, but it really didn't start to "sing" until you were going over 110 mph.

I've got an old book about the quattro in actual rallying, and if i remember correct, they clocked 2.5 seonds for 0-100 kph on asphalt and not really much more on gravel. (and they managed that with way less than 700 hp, i would also argue that Audi reduces the power on the historic cars even below 500 hp to elongate the life of the parts)

something tells me than the new 2,5 litre, that is capable of over 700 hp has some similarities with the old quattro engines... that noises of the engine in the quattro also seem to have something to do with the new 2,5l 5 cylinder (without soft limiter of course:-))... you can hear that especially in the higher RPM... and both of them are capable of huge powers...
