I went to a lecture by Grey Horsfield, who Valve hired specifically for animating their giant explosions. This one may have been made before he was picked up, but I do know he did the bridge sequence in E2.
I would love this to be a secret ending to a game like HL2. You can see the citadel at all times during normal game play, but if you accidentally shoot at it just once the entire thing explodes and the game ends. Reminds me of the cut secret ending to portal 2 where you shoot the moon and install die

i always actually honestly love citadels logic. is far far away, but still looks like being much closer. lookin all whole city sized from afar, but yet its normal building size once u stand close to it. it either uses optical ilusions, or astrotrain is no more only thing using mass shifting
i know that this is probably not how it was originally intended but i just love the idea of being able to destroy the entire citadel just by pressing some random button hidden behind some boxes in some random abandoned house located in a middle of nowhere

The saound of the explosion would tak some time to reach the observer. There would be an initial P-wave of the shockwave via the ground first before the blast sound in the air.
I imagine one chunk of that debris hits your house, you're sitting there with only a chimney and your old nokia phone, and no flesh left on your bones.

That citadel is way further than a mile away... it should take AT LEAST 20 seconds for the sound to reach you

Actually it's not. The debris exists only in the skybox and are part of the citadel's model.

I have no idea, it could be an unfinished product of the Citadel destroying, they probably didn't think that it didn't look like an alien-y explosion.
