The Huron Carol of Saint Jean de Brebeuf - Canadas Oldest Christmas Carol

- This is Canada's oldest Christmas Carol. It was written by a Jesuit missionary to the Huron people, Jean de Brebeuf, in 1643. This, of course, is the English version of the song, which varies from the original. The recording is from the CD 'A Noteworthy Christmas', and is performed by the Exultate Chamber Singers. This version eliminates the third verse; the full text follows:
'Twas in the moon of wintertime
When all the birds had fled
That mighty Gitchi Manitou
Sent angel choirs instead
Before their light the stars grew dim
And wondering hunters heard the hymn.
Jesus your King is born
Jesus is born
In excelsis gloria.
Within a lodge of broken bark
The tender babe was found
A ragged robe of rabbit skin
En-wrapped His beauty round
But as the hunter braves drew nigh
The angel song rang loud and high.
Jesus your King is born
Jesus is born
In excelsis gloria.
The earliest moon of wintertime
Is not so round and fair
As was the ring of glory
On the helpless Infant there
The chiefs from far before Him knelt
With gifts of fox and beaver pelt.
Jesus your King is born
Jesus is born
In excelsis gloria.
O children of the forest free
O seed of Manitou
The holy Child of earth and Heav'n
Is born today for you
Come kneel before the radiant Boy
Who brings you beauty, peace and joy.
Jesus your King is born
Jesus is born
In excelsis gloria. - Видеоклипы
I sung this at Canterbury Cathedral as a child, I’m 60 yrs old now. Never heard it since but it stayed in my memory as I found it quite haunting. It just came to mind today when I was on a long drive and I gave it a shot as a search using the first line. What a fantastic find.
Rarely heard but is such a beautiful carol!
Just sang this at my 8th annual Christmas concert and it has to be my favorite by far.
I was brought here by the residents of Three Pines....a beautiful carol. Not aware of it before. Will play it (on RUclips) next Christmas
such a beautiful song, it gives me chills
This Christmas carol is fantastic. There is excellent harmony between all of the singers!
Jean de Brebeuf was one of the "North American Martyrs" -a French Catholic priest who devised these lyrics to teach the Catholic Faith to the Indian population in North America and Canada in the mid 1600s. His lyric sheet can be seen at the Auriesville Shrine in New York along with some of his relics. Brebeuf suffered an violent and torturous martyrdom at the hands of the Iroquois. Pax Domini Sit Semper Vobiscum!
Don’t forget Martyrs’ Shrine in Midland, Ontario! St. Jean’s skull is located to the left of the high altar, along with more relics of the Martyrs.
Thank you.

This is so beautiful! Merry Christmas everyone
So calming
Beautiful, thanks for sharing
I haven't sung that since I was in grade 3, and I was just humming the song and found it😊❤ (I'm in grade 9 now)
Robyn Hinds I haven't sang that song since 6th grade
Robyn Hinds I learnt that song for Peace 55 years ago. Taught to me by the Sisters of Saint Ann. No State funding for our school. I recollect a longer version with more stanzas.
In college now?
Chief Inspector Armand Gamache led me here
And me....I'm just reading book 9, How the light gets in and this is how I came upon this beautiful Christmas Carol.
It's three weeks to Christmas so greetings to you all from Italy.
Me too!

Tres bien. J'adore musique de Canada!
Does anyone here know that gitchi manitou is an anishnabeg native American God/ deity. They been praying to gitchi manitou before Christians set foot on the America's
🌠Beautiful💕
I like very mutch...
So beautiful! I want to find the score. Do you know who is the arranger for this version? Thanks
hello
Did St. Jean de Brebeuf write the music too?
No.
Instead of gitchi manitou that's not in the dictionary, righteous father or king.
"Gitche Manitou" means "Great Spirit" in Wyandot language.
Noel doesn't exist in the Bible, I'm so sorry this one is a blasphemy, Matthew 1-2, Luke 1-2 (Micah 5:2, Matthew 2:5-6). (Hosea 11:1, Matthew 2:15). read it all. I'm a Christian I'm not suppose to lie.
What exactly is it you're trying to say?
@@kenhollis6197 go back to the truth in the versus of the new testament, don't argue with me. The song in it, hunters, rabbit skin, lodge, all of it wrong info, false words. What great spirit? It's the Holy spirit the right word. You are not a Christian ask the Holy spirit first before praying anything.
@@danafawadleh3160We know that. The writer was using that to reach a culture that had never known European ways or Christianity. Jesus spoke in parables using sheep goats etc that the common people could understand. This man was using things familiar to the Huron to illustrate a point and did lead some to Jesus before being martyred.
@@danafawadleh3160Hi, Catholic here, it's not blasphemy. The Bible is a small story to tell a greater truth. We don't know for sure what Jesus wore, if that's your issue.
@@danafawadleh3160 You truly don't understand the history behind this song. As someone has already mentioned, the Jesuit priest who wrote this song wrote it in a way that the First Nations people would understand. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. This is a beautiful song. Definitely not blasphemy!
